After twenty nine years, ree Puffer and Springlake reunited their
football rivalry last season in Rocket City. Tonight they do
it again at Gribinsky Field and it's the LNCU Lake
Short Game of the Week. On one oh seven, m
U asked have Jason alongside Tom Kender for this week
pre meeting the two teams that have had very different
results so far this young season. This is the Bowen
Eating and Cooling pregame Show Why from the campus of

spring Lake Middle School, Reese Puffer zher to two after
losses the Forest Hills Central and Caledonia. Same situation the
Rockets ran last season when they beat spring Lake twenty
six at the fourteen. Tom and how do they repeat
what happened a year ago?

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Well, Jason Reez Puffer's going to try to do exactly
what they did last year, which was control the line
of scrimmage and control the clock.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
A couple of long scoring.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Drives they had in that game, but it's going to
be difficult. They got a pretty much a brand new
offensive line this year and they haven't been able to
run the ball at all, only sixty three rushing yards
and two games coming into here, they haven't had a
running play from scrimmage of more than ten yards. So
that's gonna be the challenge for them. I think they're

going to try to grind it out. Though they feel
like they're a bigger school playing in a bigger conference.
They should have a little bit of a size edge
maybe upfront.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
But look for Cale Millis.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
To get called quite a bit in this game. He's
a tough kid, not more of a power guy. And
try to use that run to set up the pass
because despite their two losses, we've seen Braylan Swain to
Mason Dark quite a connection so far. Three touchdown hookups already.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Yeah, a lot of storylines there. You talk about Millis,
who was outstanding last year in this game. You and
I called it here on one of seven m us
de Moose and Millis really good on defense. He is
linebacker again for Reese Buffer, and he'll be the guy
carrying the football quite a bit on offense this year
after the sophomore Brice us Given had a big game
last year. More on that as this one progresses. And
you talk about Mason Dark, who was to start quarterback

last year for Reese Puffer. In this game two years ago,
he was the starting quarterbacks of Software Montague. He's now
moved to wide receiver, so plenty to talk about when
we talk about the moving parts for Reese Puffer throughout
this game. Meanwhile, the home standing Lakers riding high easy
wins over rival Fruitport in week one and then twenty
twenty three state champion Gladwin here last week. How much
momentum do you think the Lakers are carrying into this

One's right?

Speaker 2 (02:22):
I think the pairing a lot of momentum, actually, four
straight wins. Spring Lake won their final two games last
year and off to a great start this year. You know,
I know it feels good when they beat Fruitport the
way they did. But very impressive win last week over Gladwin.
They really took care of business in that game. You know,
Cody Mallory in his fourth year here, he runs that

flex bone option offense. Not easy to execute, not easy
to block for, and maybe it took a little time.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Who knows.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
This could be the year for the Lakers. We'll find
out a lot tonight. This is the probably the best
defense they played so far.

Bruce Puffer knows how to play defense.

They've been struggling on the offensive side, but we'll see
senior quarterback Landon O'Donnell for spring Lake.

He's been effective so far.

If he plays well again tonight, I think the Lakers

Conference from nineteen sixty five to nineteen ninety four, but
the Rockets and Lakers had not met in football until
Week three last season. That was a Rockets win twenty

take a look at some of the other games going
around on around the Lake Shore Tonight. Mona Shors got
in the win column last week with a nice win
against a good River Rouge team at Saylor Stadium. Tonight,
they welcome in the Hammity Hawks, a team they hammered
last year and a team they're heavy favorites again again
tonight again at Sailor Stadium. Meanwhile, in the OK Red Rockbird,

who we saw win at Hackley Stadium against the Skeighan
last week, they go to Grand Haven in an OK
Red opener. Both teams are one and one. The Bucks
coming off a loss at Traverse City West last week
thirty two to fourteen. I watched this game on the
stream from a Traverse City radio station over the last
couple of days. Easton Heinz did not play in the

second half. I'm hearing that it may be an injury,
but he definitely did not play a single snap in
the second half. We saw both Carson Tetopp and sophomore
Reed Berry. But the bottom line here is Grand Haven
lost four fumbles in the first half. They turned the
b over five times in the game, and you're not
gonna beat anybody doing that. They're already playing without their
best player, and Andrew Williamson, who's out with a knee injury.
But now I'm hearing Rockford is also going to be

without star senior Luca Hearn who now has an ankle injury.
It's been a little bit of a war of attrition
in this game up just up the road at Buckingher Stateium. Oh,
no question about it.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
I think Rockford is better equipped to handle the loss
of players with all their with their depth they have there.
But really too bad for grand Haven You're coming into
this season.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
They have such a great junior class.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
You mentioned Easton Hints, the quarterback, Andrew Williamson, a great
junior runback.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
He's out.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
Now If Easton Hints is out, you know, that's that's
really tough for them. They still have a couple of
great receivers a Moni Frearsen KB Kornstra, But uh yeah,
those kind of losses. Grand Haven is not there yet
where they can sustain that kind of thing. So we'll
see how the Bucks do at home tonight against Rockford.

East Catwio at Jennison and you've got Caledonia at huts.

Well, that's what I'm wondering. Yeah, So it's like Carrie
who Jack who? Yeah, But great job so far. You know,
I expect him to be able to take care of
business here. But then after this week, Oakridge goes on
the road for three straight games. They're at Luddington, at Fremont,
and at Whitehall. So we're really I'm gonna find out
a lot about oak Ridge and Tim Parker the next

Also in the West Michigan Lakes Division, we've got one
in one Montague at oh and two orchard View, and
then oh and two Fruitport at two and oh Lunnington.
We switch over to the River's Division. Our Lake Shore
Spotlight game tonight, Scott the camp is up in Tigertown
Heart two and O at Shelby one and one, and
what is a great rivalry is turned into two teams
to have high hopes for this season. That's right.

Heart versus Shelby is always a great rivalry, hasn't always
been a great game, but in this one you got
a classic matchup of Heart's defense versus Shelby's offense. And
you know, I love that this is our Lake Shore
game of the week. I love having Scott to camp there.
You know, I love having Scott to camp working with us.
What a what a bonus for us? And finally, you know,

Heart versus Shelby really means something in that Rivers division.

Yeah, we'll hear from Scott and they preferred Auto Dealers

the Coach's Corner with spring Lake head coach Cody Mallory,
his Lakers getting set to host Rhys Puffer and our
LMCU Lake Shore Game of the Week. Coach, thanks for
joining us first of all, two games in two wins,

(08:33):
two rather decisive victories. Just tell me your impressions of
your team and how happy you are here two weeks
into the season.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
Yeah, you know, I've been very happy with our performance.
I think the notable stuff is what we're doing up front.
Our offensive line is doing some great things, really getting
off the ball and then continuing downfield and working to
get out in front of the play.

Speaker 5 (08:57):
That's that's been great. Our defense, we're doing.

Speaker 4 (09:02):
Some interesting things there is it's not not a not
a standard defense, and so there was some question marks
on how that would how that would work out, and
I've been really happy with with what they've.

Speaker 5 (09:14):
Been able to do as well.

Speaker 4 (09:16):
You know, our first team is we've given up one
one touchdown with our first team unit, and you know,
it's been it's been really fun to watch those guys
fly around. So the you know, the thing for us
right now is just making sure that we're not satisfied
that you know, yeah, you're two.

Speaker 5 (09:33):
And oh, but uh, you know there's there's still you.

Speaker 4 (09:36):
Got to respect the game and you've got to respect
the work it takes to continue grinding and not get
bored with the monotonous stuff that we have to do
to maintain our edge.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
You talk about your offense, you love to run the
football and you know what three seventy seven on the
ground last week, I mean had to be close to
that in the week one game against fruit Port, but
you replaced a lot of guys on offense, you started
a lot of seniors a year ago.

Speaker 5 (09:58):
What is it that's allowed this group.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
To be so successful here with with some new pieces.

Speaker 5 (10:02):
Yeah, I think it starts up front with our O line.

Speaker 4 (10:05):
They get after it. I'm really proud of those guys.
And then also, you know, our quarterback Landon O'Donnell. He
started the last three games for us last year. He's
a really uh he's a really really proficient option quarterback,
you know.

Speaker 5 (10:19):
And he'll get the ball where it needs to go.

Speaker 4 (10:20):
So if if that's him carrying it, he's got no
problem getting up in there.

Speaker 5 (10:25):
But he's he reads it well.

Speaker 4 (10:27):
Our guys block for each other really well, I think,
you know, and it says a lot about the character
of our team. Our leading rusher Jack Nash uh in
Friday night's game, was begging me to run plays where
he's the blocker, you know. And when you when you
have guys doing that, uh, you know, I think it
speaks to how much they've bought into the team concept.

(10:50):
You know, our offense, you know, let's run the flex bone.
You know, it really requires our players to be selfless
and uh, and they're they're really exhibiting that and it's
paying out so far.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
You described your defense and how it's unique. I'm watching
it these last couple of weeks what I can see,
and it looks like there's two down linemen and five linebackers.
What do you call this defense and what's made it work?
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (11:16):
We've been calling, you know, trying to come up with names,
and you know, I don't know. I don't know what
you would call it.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
What makes it.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
Work though, is you know, it's a product of you know,
adjusting to our personnel. Like we don't have a lot
of large bodies. We don't have enough. Like it's very
important for us that our offensive line and defensive line
don't play both ways because those guys take a beating.
So we want them to be able to get off
the field. And so we're looking around at the kids

(11:44):
that we've got, and you know, we've got a lot
of guys that move well, that tackle well in space,
and so we just want to put them in space
and let them move and just create confusion upfront for
the old line.

Speaker 5 (11:56):
We were moving on every play. You know, we've got
seven potential rushers.

Speaker 4 (12:02):
Right around the line of scrimmage, and so you know,
we're two of them are always coming. But you know,
it just depends on what coach wants and what the
tendencies tell us with who else is going to be
bringing it.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
And you've got the Smeethe twins. They're anchoring that unit
and the and the defense. They've been starters for you
since they were sophomores, Oliver and Owen. Just how big
of a part of your success have they been? How
much do you rely on those guys on that side
of the ball.

Speaker 5 (12:27):
Yeah, we rely on them a lot.

Speaker 4 (12:29):
They've started since they were sophomores, but they also were
playing significant time as freshmen for us.

Speaker 5 (12:36):
You know, and they.

Speaker 4 (12:38):
They're very very good tacklers. They're very smart football players,
you know, they're they're they really they get everything set.
They make sure everybody's aligned properly, and I mean they
just fly around. Their fun to watch, all right.

Speaker 1 (12:54):
So you take on Reese Puffer. You know, you played
this game of a year ago over at their place,
and you know they kind of controlled the line scrimage
a little bit in that game. What do you see
you You've already talked multiple times here about your offensive line.
How important do you think that's going to be in
this game again against a bigger school and res puffer
D two school.

Speaker 4 (13:10):
Yeah, I mean it's it's it's gonna be huge. I mean,
what we're able to do upfront will set the tone.
They've got a lot of guys that go both ways,
and so you know, it's going to be big for
us to to make sure that we get body blows
on those guys and we make them play physical football
when they're on defense, to you know, decrease their effectiveness

(13:30):
when they're on offense. And so, uh, you know, controlling
live scrimmage is going to be big in this one,
you know, and really like we we look at we're
excited about playing this game because you know, in our view,
like this is this is a step down for them,
and uh, you know, we we love you know, we
love the challenge of playing a D two school that's local.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
How important is a game like this for you guys,
I mean the opportunity to get away and go three
and oh as you start your your conference slate, how
big would that for your team?

Speaker 5 (14:01):
I'd be huge. I mean it's it's, uh, you want
to win.

Speaker 4 (14:03):
Every one of them, you know, but uh, Yeah, I
feel like we've got really good momentum our. Our kids
are are buying into what we're what we're preaching, and
you know, anytime you can win to give.

Speaker 5 (14:16):
All of that stuff validation is huge.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
And so.

Speaker 5 (14:21):
You know they're they're you know, they're they're own too.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
But they've played, they've played two tough teams and you know,
so we're gonna have to show up. We're gonna have
to play and and uh, you know it's it's gonna
be fun. Like there's nothing better than Friday nights, Sat
Graubinsky Field.

Speaker 1 (14:38):
I love it. We're looking forward to it.

Ketter. I get the sets. This is a big game
for both of these teams. And you look at Reese Puffery,
they just, I mean, they want to win a football game,
right they're owing too. They played Caledornia for South Central
and they think, hey, we won this game last year.
You know, this is an opportunity. But for spring Lake,
I mean, they're just riding so high right now. They're
playing good football and they feel like, hey we can
go to the okay White play, we can be scree
and oh, I mean I think they can make a

run of that conference title. So I just get the
sense that this is gonna be really important for both
these teams.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
That's right, and that's why I love this game, because
I think it's gonna be really close. Not very often
you get a high school game these days where both
teams feel like they should win it. I think Reee
Puffer feels like, yeah, okay, we're going too, but we
beat these guys last year. We controlled the game. We're
the biggest girul playing the bigger league. We're gonna win.
Spring Lake feels like, yeah, we're two and oh we're rolling.

We're playing at home, we're gonna win. So when you
got that, I think it's gonna be a real competitive game,
hopefully come right down to the end.

a look at some of the keys to victory tonight,
and let's start with the visiting rockets of Reeze Puffer.

Well, Jason, I think for Reese Puffer, they have to
find a way to run the ball.

Speaker 3 (16:17):
In the first two games, Braylan swayin the junior.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
Quarterback for Reez Puffer, He's thrown the ball forty four times.
I don't think he's wanted to throw it forty four times,
but out of necessity he has had to. So he's
averaging twenty two passes a game. I think for Puffer
to win this game, he throws up half that many passes.
The offensive line three juniors, four new starters, they need

to find a way to get together.

And control this game.

Speaker 2 (16:45):
You know, last year Bryce Muskavin, a sophomore for Reez Puffer,
rush for one hundred and eighty eight yards against spring Lake.

Speaker 3 (16:52):
He's transferred out. He's now playing at Mona Shores.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
So it falls to as I mentioned earlier, Cal Millis,
And we'll also watch for the sophomore Garrison nick Losch.
He could come in and maybe spark the team, but
somehow the key to the game for Reese Puffer, they have.

Speaker 3 (17:08):
To be able to run the ball.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
Yeah, just sixty three yards on the ground in two
games combined, and that's just not going to cut an eye,
get it. They played against two really good defenses. You
got forstyl Central, who's always been a defensive randed team.
He got Caledonia, who's now head coached by Whitney Bell,
who's a defensive guy. He was their defensive coordinator under
Derek Pennington. So they played two really good defenses. But
they have got to find a way to run the
football tonight. Whether it's with the quarterback Braylan Swain, whether

it's with Nick lash whether it's with Callahan Millis, they
got to find a way to do it. You talk
about Bryce Muskavin, you know, he was really good last
year as a sophomore, and that's it's difficult, right when
you lose a player of his caliber to try to
figure out and sometimes maybe it takes a few weeks here,
but Reese Poffer hoping they can find an answer here tonight.
How about the Lakers of spring Lake. What's a what's

a key for them?

Speaker 3 (17:54):
Really an opposite problem for us spring Lake.

Speaker 2 (17:58):
Landon O'Donnell hasn't thrown it much all this year because
he hasn't had to. And one thing about Rhys Poffer defensively,
Paul Sambido, the new defensive coordinator for.

Speaker 3 (18:08):
The Rockets, they know how to stop the run.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
I mean, granted, the spring Lake attacks all over the field,
but I think they're going to slow spring Lake down,
maybe more than fruit Porter Gladwin did. And in order
for spring Lake to win the game, Landon O'Donnell is
going to have to throw the ball, and if he's
able to do it effectively when needed, that will be
the key to victory for the Lakers.

Reece PUFFERI we change up their defense a little bit.
They play two spread teams the first two weeks and
struggle a little bit against the pass, but they know
they're going to face the running team, so instead of
the three three five, they will implement a three to
