To reaching the pinnacle of the high school football in Michigan.
We got two different ends of the spectrum in the
Division six eighth semi final game. Kingsley has won a
parasite titles in his one win away from Detroit for
the fourth time. Kent City had never won a district
title before this year. The Stags and Eagles played for
a spot in the title game. On the drive to
Ford Field presented by Vanderlin Home Improvement, I'm Jason Hutting
alongside Tom Kendri TK glad to have you back and

we are in Cadillac for this neutral site game. And
Kent City has been an incredible story, doubted by just
about everyone. And now just forty eight minutes potentially from
a trip to Ford Field, how have they done it well?

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Jason, They'd done it with eight seniors who start both ways,
and this is the group they were determined to take
the next step for Kent City. Kent City has been
a great team in the regular season and conventional wisdom
is they're just not good enough to win playoff games. Well,
they've won three in a row this year, are going
for four. And you know everyone knows about Andre Mead,
the big six four senior quarterback. But just quickly the

other guys. I mean, you got Logan Thompson and Cooper Stintson.
Those are the two power running backs, inside linebackers. Then
the two speed guys Harrison Smith and Sammy Anderson. And
then you go into the trenches, Big Trevor Ross and
is kind of the leader up front, along with the
Danielson twins, Logan and Jaden, and then Jade and Loomis Sanderson.

So those are the eight guys.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
Both start, they all start both ways, and they they're
what has this Kent City team on the doorstep of
ford Field.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Kingsley, on the other hand, a little more familiar with
this big stage, having one state championship just two years ago.
What kind of challenge of the Stags percent.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Well, you know, Kingsley is a lot like Kent City.
This game reminds me of Kent City's district final a
couple of weeks ago against Belding, or even last week's
game when kings Lee got that tight win over Reed City.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
I just see they're a power team.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
They're they're not.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Real big, you know, size wise, it's pretty even, but
they run a very similar wing te offense to Kent City.
But the one difference is, you know, Kingsley is well
known statewide.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
They've won two state titles. They've been there before.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
The coaching staff as and a lot of these kids
were on the team that won two years ago in
twenty twenty three, so they're experienced and Kent City's going
to have to try to overcome that.

Lake Cadillac here in this beautiful state semifinal Saturday, we're
getting ready for the Division sixth battle between ten and
two Kingsley and twelve to zero Kent City. The Eagles
and the state semi finals for the first time in
program history. Tom Keroer, Let's take a look a few

other games with interest around this area. The winner of
this one in Division six is going to take on
either Almont or Jackson Luminchristie in the state championship game
next Friday evening at Ford Field. You got Almont, a
team that k Kingsley played the state title game two
years ago undefeated. But you got Jackson mccristie, three time
defending state champion. They won more state titles than any

high school in football in the state of Michigan. They're
nine to three, but I think the Titans a little
bit of a favorite today at No By High School. Yeah,
I would say so.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Lumin Christie again, fourteen state titles, they lead everybody. Farmington
Harrison has thirteen, and then Muskegan Catholic Central is third
with twelve state titles. But a huge game for Lumen
Christie coach Herb Brogan. Right now, he's tied with al
Fracassa for second in all time wins in the state
with four hundred and thirty wins. Only John Herrington and

as More at four forty three. So uh, if Lum
and Christie not only can win and get to the
state Finals, but Herb Brogan can move up to number
two all time in the state of Michigan.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
All right, let's go to Division One East Kent Wood
and Detroit Catholic Central meeting at Jackson High School. Of course,
the Shamrocks are undefeated. They are. Everyone thinks we're gonna
get Catholic Central and cast Tech and the DWE title
game on Sunday night at Ford Field. But I think
k Kaulfin and the Falcons has been an incredible story.
I think they might have so I think that's gonna
be a good football game.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Well, I agree with you, Jayson, especially they got the
weather they need today, This calm weather, a great day
to throw the football. You know, I don't think that's
gonna be a huge factor in our particular game right here,
But a lot of.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
These games around the state, the teams that like to throw.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
The ball, you know, you don't know what you're gonna
get on semi final Saturday. A couple of years ago,
we had the snow at Greenville. I remember doing that
game with Muskegan. But for the teams that like to
throw the ball, they got the weather they need today,
and East Kent would it is certainly one of those teams.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
How about in Division three, you've got six and six
Warren Delasal taking on twelve and h to wait now
to wits, averaging fifty two a game, giving up ten
a game. But he got Delasaut, Dan Royan and Delasauth
come stumble in the playoffs at three and six. All
they did was when a district regional title. Boy, I
think that's a really good matchup.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
I think it's maybe the best matchup of all sixteen today.
Just quickly, you look at De la Salle schedule. They
open with ham Trammeak. Okay, that's an easy game, right,
But think of the rest of their schedule after that, Davison,
Orchard Lake, Saint Mary's, Toledo Central Catholic, Detroit Catholic, Central River,
Rouge Brother Rice, Toledo, Saint John's, and Cincinnati Elder. I mean,

(05:36):
that is unbelievable. And I know you're a strength to
schedule guy. Yeah, and that has certainly got them ready.
Forget about their record. I think they're a favorite today.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
Well, and that's why I picked delas Out to win
that game, because I am a strength of schedule guy.
But it's interesting. I mean Kent City, you would say
hadn't necessarily played a strong schedule, but look at them.
I mean here they are in the state semifinal game
in Division six. So it doesn't always doesn't always tell
the story. Certainly this year, you know, Mount Pleasant, we've
seen it. We've seen teams maybe without the strongest of schedules,
have really good years. Division four. Vicksburg and Unity Christian

at Caledonia. You can hear this one over on nine
to six to won the game with Brett Pikita and
Tim Swar. Their pregame will start at about twelve thirty.
Most kickoffs are at one o'clock around the state today.
Of course we have an early start time. We'll get
into that as the broadcast goes on at noon here
at Cadillac. But Vicksburg and Unity Christian TK, I know
you were traveling last weekend, but Tim swore and I
saw a very impressive Sator squad that just steamrolled Big

Rapids fifty two to fourteen. And here comes Vicksburg five
and four in the regular season, and I wouldn't even
say there was a strength of schedule thing, but they've
got hot at the right time. They got a really
good quarterback in Easton Moulton.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
That's right, and that's another one of those games. Like
I was just talking about the weather. The perfect weather
today gives Vicksburg a fighting chance in this game. Yeah,
you mentioned Easton Molten four hundred and fifty four yards
passing last week in that upset of Portland. I mean
Vicksburg was down twenty one to three at halftime, they
were down twelve points with six minutes to go, and

they pulled the game out. But you're right, it's going
to be a tall order against Unity Christian the way
they're rolling.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
And we'll check in one more state semifinal game here
on the Bowing, Heating and Cooling pregame show. In Division five,
Ogama Heights eleven and one of the Jackpine Conference. We
saw Harrison two weeks ago in the district final out
of the Jackpine. Who shall be beat in the D
seven title game against West Catholic at Claire High School.
West Cathock of course eleven to one as well everybody
they beat. They had their big win over Catholic Central

in the district finals, so we all expect them to
role here. I'm really impressed with Ogama Heights. You know
who used to be in the Northern Michigan Football League
with Kingsley. They just left for the Jackpine two years ago.
I think this will be closer than the experts think.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Yeah, I think it's going to be a stalemate in
the trenches. They're both big and tough up front. I
just have a feeling, Grady Augustine that a senior quarterback
for West Catholic will be the difference. And kudos to
Land and Grove, you know, in his fourth year as
head coach. A win today and he could be playing
for a second state title.

We're back here in the Coach's Corner with fourth year
Kent City coach Zat Grop. And we were here about
a month ago when we were getting ready for the
Tri County game and we talked about, you know, Kent City,
you guys have been real good in the regular season,
real good in the conference, but maybe not good enough
or maybe not tough enough, maybe to win playoff games
in the past. I guess how does it feel to

(08:40):
put that narrative to bed, not with one win, not
with two wins, but with three playoff wins.

Speaker 4 (08:46):
I think it's just.

Speaker 5 (08:46):
Been a huge relief and you know, hey, finally we
got it done. You know, we've been preaching about being
mentally tough and getting in the postseason and taking that
next steps as a program. These seniors had really grasped
that and you know, just playing with the extreme confidence
and got things rolling.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
Two weeks ago. You know, you did it with defense.
You visited Belding. They had scored fifty plus points in
four regular season games, and you.

Speaker 4 (09:16):
Go in there and you held them to sixteen points.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
I mean, give me a couple of maybe two or
three of the ringleaders who kind of set the tone
on that side of the ball.

Speaker 5 (09:25):
You know, our d line had an outstanding game that game,
Logan and Danielson, Trevor Ralson and Scott Vasquez. They really
set the tone and made sure they shot their gaps,
and then our linebackers just for the football. And I
was really really able to keep there running backs from

(09:45):
not getting on the edge, and you know, we wanted
to stop trapping. We did, and it forced them to
get into some other things and we were ready for it.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
And then you come back last week and I really
had a complete game here, but you're off especially, you know,
stood out to me. Montrose came here, they were allowing
about five points per game and you score fifty. So
tell me a little bit about your team offensively, who's
your offensive coordinator and kind of kind of what are

(10:15):
you guys trying to do on that side of the ball.

Speaker 5 (10:17):
Yeah, Brandon Freeland's our offensive coordinator, and he's really good
at figuring out what what's gonna work. You know, our
first couple of series didn't go well, you know, three
an ounce, but we started finding something with you know,
running up the middle and our off tackle plays and
you know, Andre getting on the edge for that first

(10:38):
score kind of I think help us get the ball
rolling and get some confidence going. And you know, it
was just a complete game. And you know, each week
we try to find something that we need to you know,
tweak or you know, get better with our rules. And
I think that we finally it just clicked and we
blocked it up well and had an outstanding game offensively.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
You know, here we are in twenty twenty five, high
school football has gotten a lot more wide open, you know,
a lot more spread offenses the veer and here you
guys are at Kent City running the tight packed wing tea.
I guess what makes that still, you know, such a
good high school offense? And I guess does this run
you're on right now kind of validate it for you?

Speaker 1 (11:21):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (11:21):
You know, it's just your ball control and just making
sure that you know, we're playing physical football. I think
that is a huge mental thing for us and for
other teams to you know, it's frustrating when you don't
stop something when they're getting five, you know, three yards
of play and you know, you get things rolling, and

(11:44):
it's tough to run the spread in the cold weather,
and you know, and it takes a lot of a
lot of time to put the tea or the you know,
the sprint offense. And not that you don't have to
work on a tee, but you know, it's it's a
staple that we can get to and we can get
to our other packages too when we need to. But

(12:05):
you know, when you get back to the tea. That's
what we know and it's been working well for us.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
Okay, so now you turn your attention to a northern
Michigan powerhouse in Kingsley. They beat a team that you
know you played your first two years as head coach
here in Reed City. I won't ask you the score
of those games, but I guess what concerns you the
most about this Kingsley team.

Speaker 5 (12:28):
From what you've seen, they're fast and physical on both
sides of the ball. They're great in open space. You know,
their running backs are really fast, they're alignemen, get off
the ball, they stay low. You know, their defense flights
to the football around. So you know it's going to
take a complete game again, especially once you get to
the Semis, because you know this is where the best

(12:51):
football is being played and it's going to be an
outstanding game.

Speaker 4 (12:54):
All right. Now, you're a small town guy from White Pigeon.

Speaker 2 (12:57):
You're coaching at a small town here in Kent City,
but here you are one win away from playing at
sixty five thousand seat Ford Field and downtown Detroit. I mean,
have you allowed yourself to think about that possibility just.

Speaker 1 (13:10):
Yet a little bit?

Speaker 5 (13:12):
You know, I've been telling reporters and our team all
year that we gotta go on and know each week.
But you know, being one game away, it's been it's
been crazy to think about, you know, from where we
started back in June, all the hard work, and you know,
if we can get there, it's just going to be
I think we can just take a deep breath and

(13:34):
just enjoy it because it's just been an incredible journey
and you know, I'm excited for our guys.

I appreciate it. What a job Zach Gropp has done
in his fourth season at the Helm for Kent City,
bullied by a twelve and oh start to twenty twenty
five after two years of the defensive corner. You know,
he's an outstanding linebacker and all that college and boy just
hauls the defense for Kent City. I really think that's
the strength of this team is defensively. You know, the

eight guys in the box really what I call a
five linebacker system. Very impressed with Zach Ropp.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
Yeah, you're right.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
Defensively, Kent City is so good and that's what he loves.
You know, that former linebacker and he runs that stack
and he believes in it. And the way they shut
down Belding that really got my attention. And then again
last week against Montrose. So let's see if the Kent
City can do it again here today.

We moved up to noon here because Kingsley's volleyball team

is playing in the state championship game at four thirty
today in Battle Creek and head coach Tim wrer his
daughter's on that team. So they moved the startup because
they want to give the Kingsley people and especially coach
were a chance to get down there to that game.
So a little bit interesting. Kent City had to agree
to what they did, but it's a long track from
up here in Cadillac all the way down to Battle Creek.

Speaker 2 (15:40):
Yeah, we were told by some Kingsley people that if
this game is going long that coach Tim Wirr is
going to leave the game and uh to get down
to watch his daughter. So hey, we'll see if that happens.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
Well, how about keys to tonight's game? What do you
see is the key to victory? And let's Kingsley is
going to be the away team because they have fewer
playoff points, they'll be in the white jerseys. Let's start
with what the stacks? What's the key to victory for Kingsley?
Do you feel like in this game?

Speaker 2 (16:03):
Well, you know, coming off that game last week where
Kent City just ran wild against Montrose, I really think
the key for Kingsley is going to be their defensive line.
Because last week Kent City just dominated upfront and they
were able to score fifty points against Montrose, which had
been a great defensive team. So I think the defensive
line of Kingsley as key. They run a four man

front and they're small. They're only averaged two hundred and
five pounds across the front line, but they were able
to shut down Reed City. So Kent City, I think
they're gonna come out. They're gonna try to run that
trap and that off tackle run. And if they're able
to run those two plays effectively, I think they're in
good shape. If the Eagles have to dig deeper into
their playbook, then that really favors Kingsley. So I think

it all starts upfront for Kingsley in this game.

Speaker 1 (16:51):
Small but mighty kings guys really good. You're right there,
not very big, but they do fire off the ball
and they are low.

Speaker 3 (16:57):
All right.

Speaker 1 (16:57):
What I want to say about Kingsley is this, like
this is more of a Kent City thing. Like watching
Kent City is so good defensively and they're incredibly aggressive defensively.
So Olivette got behind two scores to Kent City in
the fourth quarter. They threw two double passes in that
fourth quarter. They both worked. Okay, Belding got behind in
the fourth quarter, they ran a reverse that where I
just I think trick plays if you have to, you know,

(17:20):
I mean, yeah, obviously you want to run trap and
obviously run a round tackle. But I do think Ken
City is a little susceptive to trick plays. And I
wonder veteran coach Tim worre If and when they may
go to that. I think that'd be fascinating to watch.
Kent City is the home team, They're gonna be the
all black uniforms. What's the key for Kent City?

Speaker 2 (17:38):
And again, I've been breaking down this game from every angle,
and we've talked about it. These are very similar teams.
Neither team is real big upfront. They all use a stable,
both use a stable of running backs. They both have
a lot of seniors that start both ways. So what
is the one difference? And that's under center. So I
think for Kent City, I'm looking at Andre Mead, the

six to four athletic freak at quarterback. You know, Andre
is a great kid. He likes to blend in and
just be one of the guys. But I think in
today's game. It's time for him to leave that forget
about that and say I'm gonna be the man elevate
and take over this game at key moments. I really
think that's gonna be one of the keys for Kent City,

(18:21):
Andre Mead. If he takes it to the next level,
Kent City will be at Ford Field, you.

Speaker 1 (18:27):
Know what I think? And this is not necessarily a
just Kent City thing. Two point conversions. I mean, think
about to the game we did in Week eight against
Tray County. Kent City scored three touchdowns, Try County scored
three touchdowns. Kent City converted on all three two point conversions.
Ken City kicked three extra points or Try County kick
three extra points twenty four to twenty one. That's the
difference to the game. Ken City has been really good

on twos right, two for three against Belding. They get
a bunch early against Montros last week. Kingsley's really good
at two point conversions. We know both teams are going
to go for two, and I just feel like it's
gonna be huge.

Speaker 2 (18:59):
Yeah, that's a great because a lot of times those
are afterthoughts, you know what I mean, especially with these
teams rolling over teams in the regular season they score
a touchdown on Well, if we get the two, great,
If we don't know, big deal, but not in this
kind of game. You're right, that's a great point. This
will be low scoring. That could be the difference.
