Well, Jason, they were last year Tri County and Kent City,
you know, long time rivals, but they played for the
first time last year since twenty seventeen, and the Vikings
won convincingly forty to twenty two. You know, Kent City
has been really good defensively this year. But I think
this Tri County offense is going to be the best
offense they.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Played all year.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
They've got the athletes, they spread you out, its contrasting style,
So yeah, I think Tri County will definitely be up
to the challenge. I got this game coming down to
the wire.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
It is a fascinating matchup, and you talk about strength
against strength, or that Tri County offense and that Kent
City defense. The Eagles have rolled through the Central State's
White Division, winning their four league games by an average
of forty eight points per contest, but their non conference
games have all been close. Any reason to believe that
trend will continue tonight?

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Well, yeah, I think it'll be close.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
You know, you look at the matchup Tri County from
the bigger division of the CSAA, the Red Division, and
Kent City from the smaller White Vision, and so you know,
Tri County comes in thinking they should win this game
because we're the bigger school from the bigger conference. Kent
City thinks we should win this game because we're seven
to zero. We got a magical season going, so you
put that together, I think it's gonna be very close.

What intrigues me the most, Jason, is just the contrasting styles,
the offensive styles.

Kent City.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
You know, they say they could run their offense in
a phone booth, the tightly packed wing te Meanwhile, Try County.
They'll spread you out with all their athletes. Vaughan Veltman
at quarterback, he's the trigger.

So they both believe in what they are doing and
they both believe they're gonna win this game.

of the week. It's the Eagles leading the all time
series twenty two to nineteen, with a pair of ties

excited for this CSAA non division battle. But Tom, let's
take a look at some of the other games going
on around the lake shore tonight. In the OK Green
Miskegan looking to wrap up the Outright Conference title, they
are at Reez Puffer Mona Shores needs a win to
keep the playoff hopes alive. The Sailors are at housman

Field tonight's take on win this Grand Rapids Union and
the OK Red Hudsonville, undefeated at seven and zero is
at Grand Haven, but hey the Bucks coming off a
big upset winner for Grandville last week. And then West
Ottawa at Jennison. Talking about playoff positioning, the host wild
Cats are right now thirtieth. Remember thirty two teams get
in West Ottawa off that win last week over Calvary

and overtime thirty ninth, and they still believe they can
get the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Yeah, that's what's cool about. You know, both of those
Lake Shore teams in the Okay Red both two and five,
but they're both still believing. They feel like, hey, we
win our last two games. They both have some real
tough games. Grand Haven plays Hudsonville tonight, then East Kentwood
next week. West Odawa plays Jennison and then Rockford next week.
But hey, they're both still believing. To me, this was

the toughest pick of the week for me to make.
You know, Senior night at Jennison QB Parker Felner, running
back Brody Skideman. They'll be up for this game. But
West Ottawa, we saw them. They're such a young team.

They got it.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
Rolling maybe a little bit right now. I think that
comes down to the wire. West Ottawa has lost so
many tight games. Maybe they pull out a tight one tonight.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
My sources are telling me that Jennison's got a few
tricks up their sleep tonight, which is going to involve
mister Skidiman getting bottle in his hands even more than
he usually does. Well see how that plays out, because
Ivany Skideen is one of the best running backs certainly
in the area, and West Dodd was a really good
run defense over to the ok White Hamilton two and five.
At spring Lake four and three, the Lakers fresh off
that fifty seven to forty three win last week against Forst.

So's Eastern spring Lake right now thirtieth in Division four
in playoff points, so each win valuable for the Lakers
and the Okay Silver Fruit Port is at Holland the
Trojans in Division three right now thirty sixth, so they
need to win out to try to get into those
playoffs into the West Michigan Conference Lakes Division one and
six Fremont at four and three, Whitehall and our Lake

Shore spotlight game Scott. The Camp is at orchard View
as the Cardinals four and three host seven and oh
Luddington time.

Yeah, how about orchard View Jay after an zero to
three start, they've won four in a row. They got
a we'll see where they're at tonight against undefeated Lodington
and then of course orchard View. They play Shelby next week,
so a real tough end to the regular season. But
the question for me at Luddington. You know, are they
gonna have a letdown at any point this year? Maybe

they did a little bit in the first half of
that game last week against Whitehall. But I tell you
what if they have a letdown tonight, orchard View playing
at home with the way they're playing with Peyton Babbitt
back and Kamari Reese the outstanding sophomore, Luddington's they got
to come out better than they did last week tonight.

Archard View currently thirty ninth, excuse me, thirty eighth in
Division five in playoff points, so they win tonight would
certainly do them some good, but it's gonna be tough.
We want to say congratulations to Charlie Gunsel his twenty
second year of Lannington the Detroit Lions Coach of the
Week this week. Very well deserved, because that Lunnington team
is really good all right. Elsewhere in the Lakes Division Montague,

it's won a couple games in a road, trying to
make a three in a row tonight at home taking
on Man of Stee and then a non divisional battle
Oakridge five and two from the Lake's Division taking on
Ravenna three and four from the River's Division. This one
we expect. I was listening to Goosepoop on my way here.
They have an over under for this game at twenty
four points. That seems maybe even a little high.

Well, I don't know, it's a all I know. This
is one of the great rivalries in West Michigan. I
almost took Ravana Jay as my upset special because I
just feel like the Bulldogs are so much better than
their three and four record indicates. Three of their losses
were by one score. The other one was a fifteen
to two loss in the opener against Beal City, which

is seven to zero and beating everyone by at least
thirty five points since that.

But as far as oak.

Ridge goes the key for them going forward, they can't
rely on their defense alone. They need to start blocking people,
moving the chains, chewing.

Up the clock. That's their formula. They need to get

three and four Mason County Central non conference game for
the River's Division champion for third straight.

and two and Cigaret Heart is six and one, and
then tomorrow two games tomorrow in a player Oakland Christian

five at one o'clock and then Holton one and six
and go up north to play Galert Saint Mary who

fourth year Kent City coach Zach Grop. And Zach, your
team is seven and zero. I'm heading into a big
CSAA crossover game against Tri County. I guess just tell
people what has been the key to your team's success
so far?

Speaker 3 (07:46):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (07:46):
I think the key so far has been, you know,
just the preparation each week. I think that we really
we really are focused on, you know, the game plan.
You know, obviously today's Monday, so we start with just
prepping for the game defensively and then offensively, doing some offers,
and then we get ready to practice. And I think

(08:07):
it's really helped kind of break things down and then
just staying you know, one week at a time, you know,
just know we want to win each week and not
looking ahead and things like that.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
I know you have a veteran team this year, I
think sixteen seniors. One of them is one of the
areas really great athletes that many people may not know about,
and that's your second year quarterback Andre Mead six three,
two thirty.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
I know he's committed to Grand Valley.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
I mean, tell us a little bit about him and
how he impacts games on both sides of the field.

Speaker 5 (08:40):
He's just got a high motor, you know, defensively, it
seems like teams trying to run away from him. He's
just a huge impact and kind of helps us a
little bit of game plan where you know, and we'd
move him around a little bit. We hadn't playing a
little noseguard to in passive situations last week. So he
just makes a huge impact, make a big plays for us.

He did a sack fumble last week and one of
our guys scooped.

Speaker 4 (09:03):
To the squad.

Speaker 5 (09:04):
So he's a playmaker for sure. And then offensively, he's
just got the speed. Once he gets to the edge,
he can he can take it the whole way. So
he just has command of the huddle and the guys
trust him. He's the captain, he's a leader, so does
a really good.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
Job for us.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
How would you describe this year's team offensively and who
are some of your other playmakers?

Speaker 5 (09:25):
Yeah? Offensively, I think we're physical up front. Our guys
uh you know, really to get off the ball and
and and and push people. Are our center. Trevor Rawson
really is like the key there. He's a he's a
leader and he sets the tone in the huddle and
getting Everyboddy focus ready to go and uh, you know,
hoober stints and here's his Betsy Andrews and logo at

tops you know, hard nose runners and making playoff for
us on the edge.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
Dude, all right, we're hearing the coach's corner with Zach
Gropp at Kent City getting ready for a big game,
this home game this week against Try County. You know,
we've had some impressive wins this year. Most of them
big wins have been on the road. You beat Godwin
Heights Heart and then last week forty six to fourteen
over Central Montcalm team that beat you twice last year.

(10:15):
Try County they beat you last year as well. Do
you have the guys, especially upfront, do you think to
flip the script and kind of avenge and other loss.

Speaker 5 (10:25):
Like I said, they're highly motivated each week. You know,
I think that definitely up brought. You know, we've been
setting into line of scrimmage and you always done me
another challenge for us, this right or something about that
with our kids, send the challenge and they continue to
playing with a lot of commons and that's a lot

(10:46):
of keys for us. There's no panic winniversity HiT's you know,
if you're down, you just gotta keep fighting this the
next play, every single till every time that something happens
bad and you know you can't you can't dwell on
the pass and you can't look for a future.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
So it's good, all right.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
So this program here at Kent City has really been
a model of consistency, especially in the regular season, ten
straight winning seasons here. The playoffs, I guess that would
be the next frontier for you guys. You've been one,
one and done the last three years. Do you think
this team has what it takes to to win a
playoff game and possibly make a run in D six?

Speaker 5 (11:23):
I do, if they can stay humble and taking one
week at time, I think that, you know, this is
a team that can definitely do that. You know, playoffs
is always tricky because you never know who you're gonna get,
and you know there's a lot of good schools here
in D six. So but I think that I would
I would take our team and miss anybody. You know,
I really like our guys. They love playing football, and

(11:47):
you know they're just playing with high confidence right now.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
And lastly, coach, I know, I'm speaking for Jason Hutton
and my partner. We're both excited to come out here
and do the game. You guys are kind of on
the edge. I mean you're on the edge of our lake,
your coverage area, and you're sort of on the edge
of the Grand Rapids area. Do you feel like maybe
your program gets overlooked a little bit.

Speaker 4 (12:08):
You know what, it's hard to tell.

Speaker 5 (12:11):
I know that we're on the edge of you know,
some mainstream and there's a lot.

Speaker 4 (12:14):
Of good football teams around here.

Speaker 5 (12:15):
But you know, I say that, you know, we want
to make an impact. You know what do you who
do you guys want people to think of Kansas City again?
You know, I want people to think that, you know, hey,
we're gonna have a you know, four quarter game here because.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
We have good kids.

Speaker 5 (12:28):
They play hard. But you know, like you said, each
and over each year, we're a winning program. But what
do we guys do take that next step to get
some of those wins in the playoffs and make us statement.

Speaker 2 (12:41):

I really like that answer from Zach Grop, Tom Kedder.
You're the king of the tough That was a tough question,
you know what you asked him, And I thought that
was a really good answer. And you know, they're doing
a great job. I mean he's fourth season, replacing Bill
Crane twenty seven and ten in his four seasons after
two years as defensive coordinator under the tutelage of Bill Crane.
So Kent City has been impressive for the last several

years and really impressive this season as well. Well, we're

Night at Ward Memorial Field. Is Kent City gets ready
to host a Try County sixteen Eagle seniors being on
it right now. Jason Hautton along with Tom Kendra and
the Lake Short game of the week. And when you
think about a time of school of Kent City, just
over four hundred and two this there's probably about fifty
males in each class. To have sixteen a mount A
football team, that's a big senior class.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
Oh, it's a great senior class. In zat Grapp was
talking about it from the beginning of the year. The
senior leadership he's got and they're getting honored here.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
It's cool to see.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
Part of the reason that really a big reason why
they're seven to zero and so good this season, as
those sixteen seniors, almost all of them big contributors. How
about some keys to victory? And we've talked a lot
here in the Boneheating and Cooling pregame show about the
contrast of styles and the strength of Tri County's offense
and the strength of Kent City is defense. What are
the keys to victory for each tamdsfield time.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Well, yeah, I guess I would say for Tri County then, yeah,
the key is their defense because you look at their
two losses against Big Rapids. They allowed sixty three points
against Reed City fifty eight points. And even in the
games they've won Jay, the five games that Try County
has won, they've allowed at least two scorers in every game. So,
drilling a little deeper, I'm really looking at the linebacker

(14:39):
play because we know how critical that is against a
wing T offense like Kent City runs. So I'm looking
at the Vikings two young linebackers, the sophomore Ryan Ryder
and then the junior Wilson Sixbury. You know this, this
is gonna be a big game for those two linebackers
against this wing T. I think they've got to play

(15:01):
well in order to slow down Kent City and then
flipping it over to the Egles I'm watching.

Speaker 2 (15:07):
I think the offensive line.

Speaker 1 (15:08):
Play will be the key to the game for them.
We all know that the Eagles have a special athlete
at quarterback and Andre Mead six three two thirty verbally
committed to Grand Valley. But if he has to run
it too much or throw it too much, that's not
a good sign.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
This Eagles team, they like they want to do.

Speaker 1 (15:29):
A better job up front than they did last year
against Kent City. I think it starts with the senior
twins Logan and Jaden Danielson and the center Trevor Ross
and really setting the tone. If they're able to control
the ball keep this Tri County offense off the field,
I think Kent City can win the game.

Speaker 4 (15:47):
I'm with you.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
I think that's a huge key for the Eagles to
stay on the field offensively. You know they lost Gabe
excuse me, they lost Julio Sanchez a Vila about three
weeks ago to a knee injury. Now, Avila is one
of those sixteen seniors. He is draft tonight to be
honored for Senior Night, but he's not going to play
with dealing with that knee injury, and they've had to
do some shuffling on that offensive line. And so last

(16:09):
week and now this week, they have moved one of
those twin Danielson's Logan Danielson, who was the right guard
the first five weeks of the season six weeks of
the season, to left tackle, which is the spot that
sancheze Villa was at. And so now they've moved Jaden
Loomis Sanderson another the sixteen seniors. He was a tight
end wearing forty four. He switched to seventy one now

(16:29):
because they'll play right guard. But they just don't seem
to miss a beat up front with that, you know, older,
more experienced group.

Speaker 1 (16:35):
No, And that's their specialty, you know, is that it's
been for a long time, back to when Bill Crane
was coaching here. The specialty has always been the offensive
line and they do a great job of it. And
I just want to mention quick j before we get
into things. You know, people may wonder, you know, why
we're broadcasting this game because they're not traditional teams that
you see, But quick answer is they deserve it. Kent

(16:57):
City seven and zero Division and then the five and
two Tri County. Their losses are the two great teams,
Big Rapids and Reed City. They're in D five. The
other part of it, these are gonna be definite I
think playoff opponents for some of our Lake Shore teams
as well, so kind of getting a look at how
they might match up against a a Montague or an Oakridge,

which could be a match up down the road.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
I'm glad you bring that out because you're the perfect
guy to speak to this. So I've always my years
in television at Fox seventeen, like we covered all the
West Michigan, so I didn't care if you're Lakeshore Miskegan,
if you were Grand Rapids and the Okay, can't whatever,
it didn't matter to me. And now that i'm doing
this radio like again, tell me where to go in
the high school football on Friday night, I'm happy to
be there. Kent City, we count in our Lake Shore

coverage area. We are not really anywhere near the near
the Lake Shore. But for some reason, you're a longtime
skiing chronicle guy. Sure Kent City was roped in there
instead of going south to the graphics press, which I
never understood. But I'm happy to be.

Speaker 1 (17:54):
Here, sure, And a lot of it had to do
with you know, old league affiliations. You know, they played
in the newego on the Athletic Association against Grant Nowago,
Holton Aspiria, which were teams, so they kind of became part.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
Of that part of that group.

Speaker 1 (18:09):
And so you know, they're just on the outskirts of
the Lake Shore, kind of on the outskirts of Grand
Rapids area. So it's great to be here. This is
an unbelievable facility. We've been treated great. Hey, maybe we'll

City has won the toss. The Eagles have deferred their

choice to the second half, so Try County is going
to get the ball first. We have an east west
field here ward Memorial Field.

Going to defend the west end zone as we await
the kickoff. Let's look at that Tri County offense, which
has Von Veltman the senior quarterback, second year starter number four.
He recently committed Alma College to be a Scott. Veltman
is a true dual threat, excellent speed, had had a
school record ninety five yard touchdown running the week to
win over Sanford Meridian. In the backfield with him is

a senior number two Chase Keller. They'll store four wide
receivers and they play a lot of different guys there,
but they'll go Bason Butler, the junior number six and
senior number one Jaden Button, and then they have senior
number eighty Kate Hollman and junior number twenty one Wilson
six barry their offensive line from left to right. Michael
Halstead's a junior at left tackle wearing seventy five. Jordan
Reva is a senior wearing number fifty two at left guard,

the center is Noah Carson, number seventy two, a senior
number fifty is Brendan Carson, a junior wearing number fifty,
and then number sixty Casey Keach is the right tackle.

Who's a senior and the kickoff.

The opening kickoff is taken at his own twelve yard
line by David Reid, this junior for Tri County, and
he comes all the way back out to the forty
five thirty three yards on the return and Tom Kender
the Vikings get good field position yeah that time.

On the kickoff, they let reed to run all the
way horizonically across the field and was able to turn
the corner Thank God for Andre Mead, there was able
to push him out of bounds before he took it
any further.

So Von Veltman in that Tri County offense on the field,

shotgun Snaper roles left, throws complete to Grayson Butler. He's
got a first down at the try at the Kent

The defensive ends are fifty four Logan Danielson, a senior,
and fifty one the sophomore Steve Vasquez. Their outside linebackers
are Jaden Danielson seventy six, a senior, and number two
Andre Mead, a senior.

at safety. Tonight, returning for just the second game after
a scrimmage injury. Cale Freeland, a senior, really good player

is in there. They're inside linebackers Cooper Stinton at number eight,
a senior, and Logan Thompson at number twenty, also a senior.
It is second down and seven for Tri County. Veltman
with a shotgun snap and he wants to throw and
he's going deep for Jadan Button. He's got it with
the fifteen and he'll be pushed out of bounds at
the eleven yard line, but it's thirty yards and Tri

Well that's Jaden Button. That's his favorite target.

Thirty four catches and six touchdowns coming into this season.
He the story of Jaden Button is really something you know.
Last year in this game, he was just watching from
the sidelines after that scary injury he had the week
before against Nuego, had an aneurysm on the field, and
he's been able to come back and have a great
senior year. So a great personal story there for Jaden Button.

Speaker 3 (22:57):
Yeah, they thought maybe he would never be able to
play again. Now he's hoping to play in college. They
say he went out at the ten and so first
and goal from the Tenants. Chase Keller spinning his way
up the middle. He's down to the two yard line.
It'll be second and goal for the Vikings. What a
first drive, Jay for Tri County. A little stunned here
the Kent City home fans. This defense only allowing six

points a game and this first drive, Try County has
marched right down the field. So number three Matt Nelson
the seniors in it wide out for Try County. Twenty
one Wilson six Perris the h back on the left
sid They're gonna run Keller right at the middle. He's
into the end zone. Chase Keller two yards to peyterrt
and the Vikings strike first just a minute and twenty
five seconds into this game with a six to nothing lead.

Oh yeah, very easy there.

They didn't do such a nice job Jay, of spreading
the field, and that I think that was the difference.
Kent City's defense not used to being all spread out
like that. They need to find a way to for
everyone to cover their gap, cover their assignment because that
was just too easy.

this head coach, Phil Butler. Butler in fourteen seasons, his
fourteenth season at his alma mater where he was an
excellent player, and they've been really good the last five years.

He's a little guy, the senior running back for Tri County,
but man does he have a quick burst of speed.
He's averaging over six yards of carry over five hundred
and fifty yards twelve touchdowns on the season, and he
really keeps a defense honest with his speed between the tackles.

So it'll be second and six and twenty seven. We're
at three minutes thirty seconds to play opening quarter, Try
County leading seven, and I think they're gonna go Chase
Brooks running wide side left and Brooks able to turn
the corner, got very close to the first down marker,
and I think he has it at the twenty one
yard line give him a gain of six. It is
a first down and the Vikings will move the chains again.

While using a lot of different weapons. The Vikings are
so far in this game, Phil Butler. I remember Phil Butler,
the head coach at Try County way back when he
played for Try County and one of his assistants was

under three minutes to go. In the third quarter, Veltman
in the gun with Keller do was right, and they're
gonna run Votman right up the middle. All he bounces

Smith will finally get him out of bounds. But Veltman
doing a nice job to get about three on that
one on the quarterback draw.

Berry and Butler split out short side left. Veltman rolls

gonna roll back to the middle of the field and
he throws at the end he incomplete. Excellent job by
Logan Thompson the middle linebacker, forcing Veltman have to get
rid of it, and a big stop by the Eagles.

So the defense, as it has all year, comes up
big and now it's the Eagles offense that needs to
