We featured Okay Conference Robbery matchup on the boys Signe
as the Cougars of Grand Rapids Catholic Central led by
Jordan McCoy and Phoebe Watkins take on JJ Mottoman and
the Sailors of South Christian. Hello every one, as along
with Jason hutting On, Brett Pikia Joe are at the
third member of our crew back in.

Grand Rapids and from all of us to all of you,
happy holidays and enjoy the high school hoops coming up
the next couple of weeks. And Jay, that's the one
thing I want to talk about is how crazy the
month of December has gotten for the boys and girls.
You were just at the invite at Calvin that you
guys were a proun sponsor of with Powers Spring Training
System saw some great matchups, but we see more of

these showcases, more of these East versus West across the
state matchups on a Saturday that we've ever seen before,
and it just gets people excited, I think, even before
the holidays for high school hoops.

But when you talk about boys basketball, this is a
second straight year now where they've been a week ahead
of the girls. So it started December first, right the
day after the high school football season ended, and it's
just been all gas, no breaks since twelve one, and
here we are six days before Christmas. It's an incredible
schedule of boys games tonight, highlighted by this matchup between

two great rivals in Catholic Central and South Christian. And
it's just gonna keep going because tomorrow we've got games
at Cornerstone like that. That tournament at Cornerstone, I think
it actually started today, but it gets going over the
next two weeks and there are some fun matchups, so
it's a lot of fun. If you love high school
basketball like you and I do, man, this is exciting.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
And I think two of the best teams in the
area when you look at over the years when it
comes to Division two, or if you go back to
when it was flast b certainly the Coonars have Grandappen
Staff Central. Ie know they come in at one and two.
But Chris Pearl, their head coach, very good job. A
young head coach in his second season. He's played all
over the area at Grand Valley, State, at Davenport in
his own right, went.

To wat Sego High School.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
He said, hey, our first two games and we're not
gonna avoid anybody. We played two of the top ten
teams the state that our Division one and on the
other side, as you know, for Taylor Johnson, his fourth
season again a former college assistant at Grand Valley, he's
really enjoyed being a high school coach again.

For the Sailors of.

South Christian, he's got a young roster, but they are
three to one.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Had more practice time than they're ever used to after.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
The football season because of the early elimination of the
football team, and they beat.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Grand Rapids Christian and their opener.

Speaker 4 (02:38):
Well, both of these teams had more preparation time than
they're used to. Right Grandpa's Caloch Central didn't even start
their season until last Friday or last Thursday, because you
know they're always playing at for a field in football.
But of course, they lost to West Catholic the district
final on November seventh, so that was three days before
practice started. And then you talk about Style Christian. They

lost on Halloween to Portland, so a full week and
a half before their practice started. So neither of these
coaches are used to this amount of time. But you know,
they both wish their football teams would have made deeper runs,
but they'll take the preparation time. And you talk about
Kellock Central being one and two, I mean, they lost
by six at Rockford last Thursday. I think there's an
argument who made the Rockets the best team in the

state in Division one. I think there's not much argument
that they aren't the best team in West Michigan. And
then they lost to Northview at the invite. And Northview
is really good man and Callick Central is really good
on defense. They held both of those teams to fifty
or fewer. So this su good basketball team.

Well, a lot of athletes are gonna be on the
floor tonight, maybe multi sport athletes both sides. It's gonna
be physical, it's gonna be hard nosed defensively.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
Who can shoot the three? Who can get up and down?

Speaker 2 (03:48):
This one might be in the forties and fifties, but
I can tell you what I think, it's gonna be
a close one down the stretch. Coming up on the
jay NHS Bamby Stores pregame show, We're gonna go on
the Montel Construction Coaches cornered with South Bister Day coach
Taylor Johns, and I'm also gonna get a chance to
ask him about what he thinks about a shot clock
as we're seeing it more and more with these Saturday
games and showcase events, eventually coming to the high school

game for the boys and the girls. That's we continue
on a Friday night before Christmas. It's high school hoops action,
the LMCU high school basketball game of the Week, Catholic
Central and South Christian on the boys side, coming up
here on ninety six to one the game. Let's go

to the Montel Construction coaches corner now, and he has
stepped into the broadcasting realm, so we're gonna have some
fun with this football broadcasting for South Christian during their
games on Michigan Sports Radio. He is, of course the
head coach of the Sailors now in his fourth season
on the boys side. For hoops Taylor Johnson and first
and foremost coach. Now you see things from our eyes, right,

we enjoy that for Jasonutt and myself.

Yeah, you know, totally totally crazy, different world. But I
tell you that a little less pressure. I feel like
sometimes in the booths that out of sideline. But it's
funny because now you and you're sitting on that side,
you're like, oh, that coaching tod that that coach you
do that you can't stay it out in the air.
But now I know you guys don't really think we
are as coaches. We kind of screw up in the
moment and you guys got that bird's eye view and

get replay and all those beautiful things that you got.
But no, it was so much fun, man, such a blessing.

You know.

Danny Brown does a great job of our football team,
and man, it was just so fun to work with
Bryce Sach and those guys of Mission Sports Radio. And
I got a ton of respect for what you guys do.
And I don't know if I was any good, but man,
I tell you I haven't had that much fun in
a long time.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
You were fantastic And the unfortunate note of that, but
as a basketball coach. A little bit different world for you,
right is South Christian had that heartbreaking loss in Week
one of the playoffs in Portland, and all of a
sudden you're practicing with your basketball team earlier than you
ever have. Do you feel that has been an advantage
for you guys, because it wasn't easy with your schedule
right out of the game, I mean, get a nice

win over grantedp It's Christian, You beat Holland Christianlosville. Ye
had Unity Christian in there, which is a tough shooting
night for you, but I mean at least you had
more practices to prepare, right, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (06:07):
Oh absolutely, it was a huge advantage for us. You know,
the past few years has been really difficult because again,
our schedule, we don't take anything lighter at the end
of the season.

Speaker 6 (06:15):
We don't really have.

Speaker 5 (06:16):
Any cupcakes going into it. And we love our schedule
and we love playing you know, neighborhood schools that are
also really, really talented, So it definitely gives a huge advantge.
I think it showed in the Gramat's Christian game. I mean,
I get it. We made a ton of threes, and
you know that always makes things a little easier, But
I just felt like we were in so much better shape.
You know, I think that's the biggest thing. You just
can't You can't simulate game shape and getting in shape

and when you have two days before your first game
after a long football season. So listen, I'd rather have
it the other way. I'd really have a football team
go deep. But selfishly, it definitely helped us in that
gramat Christian win and I think it's going to propel
us to a good year.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
So, coach, what does this version of South Christian Sailors
basketball look like? I know, you guys love the three.
You can shoot the three, You've proven that. But when
I look at the varsity football roster and compare it
to your roster, the thing that jumps out to me,
and you've got guys contributing from freshmen all the way
up to seniors, is how athletic you guys are?

Speaker 5 (07:11):
Yeah? Well, I think we're sneaky athletic. I don't think
a lot of people really talk about that when they
talk about this team. They love to talk about how
young we are and stuff. But you know, like the
two freshmen we have up, you know, Cruz Vickerman, you
know was a quarterback and the freshman team.

Speaker 6 (07:23):
He's a great lee.

Speaker 5 (07:23):
Dax five Board was a great tight end slot receiver
for our football team, and they're both playing up with us.
So it's just a totally different group this year, having
two freshmen and US sophomore and a good junior class,
and you know, we have to blend a lot of
different guys together and grades and stuff like that. I
got brothers for the first time on the same team,
which is a This is a fun thing for me.
So it's just it's totally different. But you know, they're

young and hungry. They've all kind of been waiting their turn,
you know, with that heavy senior class we had last year.
So I think more than anything, the guys are just
really eager and looking forward to the opportunity and done
a good job with us so far. I mean, record wise,
I feel pretty good do like this group with like
this group because there's a ton of room for growth,
and when you have a young team, it's kind of
fun to coach.

You look at the names, and two guys that jump
off the page at me because I recognize him, and
I'm getting old because I've covered them.

Speaker 6 (08:12):
I think back in the day.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
But Jj Modterman six six senior fifteen points per gaming,
leading score, just under seven rebounds. Max Zickderman six' four,
JUNIOR i remember his dad At cornerstone ten points per,
game three. REBOUNDS i, mean talk about these kids and
how they kind of lead your team right now in high.
BASKETBALL i q's right from where they come.

From, YEAH i mean both of them their dads were great.
PLAYERS i teach them Sometimes i'd like them to be
better than their, dads you. KNOW i mean that's gonna
be that's gonna be hard to. Do But JJ's just
had an outstanding here for. Us he got to play
quite a bit last year With ken forgot hurt and
stuff like, that but he's just a little on the weaker,
side just hasn't really developed in his. Body he had
a great summer IN aau working With grant up at The,

storm and he just is really just coming to his.
Own he's just so much more confident out. There he feels,
like you, know there's so much more he can do
on the on the. Core but WHAT i really said
about is rebounding his rebounds. Outstanding that was a really
big gap for. Us Losing kemper and, this and throwing
more than those. GUYS i wasn't sure we're going to.
Rebound and then Mac max is just a hoop junkie.

MAN i, mean you talk about a kid who is
all in on, basketball and that kid's going to have
an opportunity to play some college ball one. Day he
just works his butt off and he's still got a
ways to go on the defensive side and the little,
things but his will and his confidence is. Unmatched and
he's had a good start for us so far as.
Well so it's really fun coaching those.

Kids Seltz Christian boys had basketball Coach Taylor johnson joined

wanted to ask you about this question because we're starting
to see these things like the Invited calvin last, weekend

and in those a lot of them they're using a shot. Clock,
now you come from a college, BACKGROUND i think it's
the one thing that's really missing girls and boys high
school basketball to take it to the next. LEVEL i
say that, because like, YOU i haven't coached as a
college basketball, coach But i've certainly covered a lot of.
GAMES i just think the flow of the, game we're
ready for. It if we can have clocks, now as

you witnessed at football stadiums for the play, clock we
need to get shot clocks in.

Gyms, YEAH i could.

Agree with you.

MORE i, mean so that's my, equalizer, RIGHT i, mean
it makes the game fair for both. Teams you, know
we put a lot of teams that hold the, ball you,
know even UD i, mean they're a tremendous, team and you,
know they held the ball for like a minute when
they were up, big and they don't like they didn't need.
To so you, know it's just not it's not the
way the games should be played and designed. Anymore we

have to stay up with the times and and make
adjustments and became our coach. Association they're just doing a tremendous.
Job they create a shot clock, committee you, know and
they're doing everything they can to get surveys out to
the ads and really push for it for the. Listeners
the hold up right now is the. Ad so what's
happening in our world is the ads don't want to

(11:02):
pay the shot, clocks and they don't want to pay
for the people to work it and teach people how
to work. It AND i get, IT i understand all,
that all those, things but you, know we just had
a rep pay increase a couple of years ago at
like fifty. Percent everybody did, That so it's kind of
one of those things that if you just pass, it
everybody can figure it out and get through. It we'll
definitely need people to step up to learn how to

(11:23):
run it and run it. Well we understand there will
be mistakes and all that, stuff but when you think
about the experience in the, game we had to do
a better job as ads and coaches and give these
kids the best experience. Possible and in order for the
better team to, win we really need to have the shot.
Clock and it's not fair to those. Teams you, know
they get up to and the hold the ball the
whole quarter and all of a, sudden you, know nobody

wants to watch, that and nobody wants to play in those,
scenarios and the coaches that stall it's not really their.
Fault it's if it's in the, rules you, know and
they feel like give the best chance to. WIN i get.
IT i understand That i'm not SOMETHING i would, do
BUT i get. It you, know you get up late
in the game with a minute to go or two minutes,
ago and you just hold the ball and it's just
now the game's designed to play. Anymore it's just really

unfair to those teams that feel like they're the better
teams in the. Situation SO i really hope that we
can get the ads behind. It we're. CLOSE i feel
like it's gonna happen. Eventually it's Just, michigan you, know
hate being. LAST i feel like we need to be
more proactive and get with the times a little, bit
so hoping we can push that through here.

but you, know the one thing you gotta do is
you got to be able to make some. Shots and
you can get those, opportunities you got to knock them.
