Speaker 1 (00:00):

weekly visit with area high school football coaches and players,
brought to you by Sports Play and ninety six to
one the Game. The Fox Motors Big Skin Party is
brought to you by the Fox Motor Group. Now from
the showroom floor of Fox Motors, here's your host, Brick Burkey.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Welcome to the Fox Motors Pig Skin Party. We are
coming to you live from Fox Mazda on twenty ninth Street,
just off the belt Line. I'm Rick Burkey. Welcome you
to an hour of high school football discussion. We will
be here till seven o'clock PM. Our special guests, the
Unity Christian Crusaders are here. Coach Craig Tibby and as
players will join us. We'll talk a little bit about
their season and get to know a little bit more
about the players, not only on the field, but also
(00:43):
their interests off the field. It's always a fun time
as well. We look forward to spotlighting the Crusaders. We
have had another fantastic year off to a four and oh start,
and you've got a big game this week. We'll talk
about in the OK Gold We As we mentioned, we
are here at Fox Mazda on twenty ninth Street. Brad
Hemingway is the general manager here, and Brad, I know
(01:03):
it's a great part of the community involvement when you
host a team with this, and it means a lot
to you and your staff to have the Crusaders in
high school football spotlighted.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Oh my goodness, it's a ton of fun. I really
enjoy it. You know my kids. I have two daughters
that go to this school and a few more kids
that will be going to that school soon enough, So
it's an honor to host them today and enjoying watching
them have a great season so far.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
Brad, tell me about the c X fifty hybrid. I'm
hearing them about.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
That c X fifty hybrid. It's a wonderful vehicle. It's
a great outdoor vehicle, it's a great city vehicle. But
they do also create it in a hybrid version, which
gets you pretty darn close to that forty miles per
gallon still being able to go outdoors, still being able
to go through the city, and still not spend a
whole lot of time at the gas pump. So it's
a wonderful vehicle.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Performance and economy is certainly a factor, but safety is
always a priority for MAS And you've got some nice
awards lately.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Oh my goodness, boy do we have a few. So
number to start off, MASTA is the third ranked company
and the JD Power Associates of durability and dependability and
in addition to that, the Institute for Insurance Highways Safety IHS.
Mazda has not six, not seven, but eight Top Safety
(02:24):
Pick Pluses awards for.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Their brand eight Top Safety Pick Plus award. Sure that
is fantastic as well to get into a vehicle. We
hear a lot of talk about also outside of the
auto industry, but interest rates are a big topic of
discussion in so many ways of business right now. And
you've got some great opportunities in that area.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Well certainly, and everybody is aware that things just cost more,
you know, whether you use the word inflation or the
term interest. MASTA has put together some great programs where
they have offers as low as one point nine percent
or two point nine percent even to go through and
get yourself into the new of your choice, making new
(03:02):
cars affordable, making new cars fun again, and just getting
a great product without spending so much money on the interest.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
I was looking at something Brad before the show, and
I had to read it twice to make sure I
was reading it right. You're offering it one year an
opportunity to get one year of free maintenance nas.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
Yeah, So what we do for you know, we have
a great deal of group Fox Motors and here at
Fox Mosta, we use and we partner with a Masta
Financial Services to go through and take care of every
new car customer is going to go through and get
a year's worth of maintenance taken care of, just for
saying us for us at Fox Masa saying thank you
for your business. It's going to cover two services within
(03:42):
the first twelve months or that first year of owning
your car. And we have the ability to go through
and schedule online, schedule by phone if you don't want
to sit here and wait for the thirty or forty minutes.
We have free loaners every single time. Just ask us
and we got you taken care of.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Brad, tell us about your staff and why they make
things so it's a smooth operational.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
Oh my goodness, the staff that we hear that we
have here is incredible. It's it's refreshing when you can
walk into a dealership, which I'll be honest, not many
people want to or look forward to it. But when
you walk in and you have a feel a vibe
that is just friendly, welcoming, you see people smiling because
number one, they're on top of what they're doing, they
(04:22):
enjoy what they're doing, and they're having fun while they're
going through and making a guest experience phenomenal. That's the
goal of the store. That's the goal of the experience.
And the fact that I have twenty two individuals at
this store consistently making that happen every single day without
me going through and having to ask them for it.
They just enjoy doing it. So if you're looking for
(04:44):
that phenomenal experience, just to have a good time, enjoy it,
get a great product, get great deals, and you would
be treatedly, honestly, transparently. Fox Moles is the right place
to go.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Sales hours Monday and Wednesday nine to seven, Tuesday, three,
Thursday and Friday nine to six, Saturday ten to three.
Service hours Monday through Friday seven thirty to six and
Saturday from eight am to two pm. Brad Hemmingway, general

and thanks for hosting the Crusaders tonight. We look forward
to a fun night the rest of the evening.

Thank you.
Speaker 2 (05:14):

about the Fox Motors Pig Skin Party here on ninety
six to one in the game be just east of
(05:37):
the East belt Line break Berday Wild Commuter the fig
Skin Party. Look forward to talking to the Crusaders from
Unity Christian High School in just a little bit. We've
got to tell you first of all that we are
truly excited at Lake Michigan Credit Union again this year
and the Touchdowns for Kids promotion this year. For every
touchdown scored in our nine to six to one and
(05:58):
one oh seven m US Lake Shore Games of the Week,
our friends at LMCU donate fifty dollars to Kids Food
Basket to nourish local kids to reach their full potential.
And last weekend we had eight more combined touchdowns between
the two games. That's another four hundred dollars donated by
LMCU total through four weeks two four hundred and fifty.
That's right, four hundred and fifty dollars already, and that's growing.
(06:21):
We're not even to the halfway point of the season
here and the touchdowns for Kids promotion benefiting Kids Food Basket.
Big night of action coming up this Friday night. Of course,
we've got two play by play games on ninety six
to one. In the game, we're going to spotlight the
ok Silver this year, Belding in Holland. That should be
a good matchup. Belding two and zero and off to
another good start in conference play three and one overall
(06:42):
Holland two and two, but they've had a couple of tough,
close losses, so that should be a good one. On
ninety six to one, the game with Brett Biketa and Buckshino.
Our one oh seven mus game goes out to the
Lake Shore, a couple of Lake Shore rivals, Grand Haven
and West Odawa square off and Okay red play, And
of course we send our game reporters out to different
games across West Michigan where they do pregame, halftime and
postgame detailed report so you can hear right up to
(07:03):
the minute how these other games are going. And these
are the games we're spotlighting this week. Forest Hills Eastern
at Grand Rapids. Christian Scott Moore will be there East
Grand Rapids at North through our Remi Monahan will report
on that game between the Pioneers and the Wildcats Rockford
at Granville, a big Okay Red showdown. Dan Hasey will
preview and give updates on that one throughout the evening.
Orchard View at Muskegan Catholic. We're gonna go down the
(07:23):
Lake Shore for our Lake Shore Spotlight game where Scott
de Camp. We'll give details on that game. Another Okay
Red matchup of interest Hudsonville at Jennison our Lucas Dezimbel.
We'll preview that one as well. And a big Okay
Black matchup of Muskegan at Forestills Northern Bob Sack. We'll
get preview and postgame on that one as well. And
of course we always have thoughts before the kickoff with
Bill Roan, a great interesting perspective on the high school
(07:45):
game and in West Michigan and over beyond that even
sometimes and Gino's gems our own buck. Gino he looks
at the games we're doing, all the games we've got
reporters going to, and he finds three other games that
are worthy of getting some attention that we just don't
have enough bodies to get to. And we talk about
that and the J and H Family Stores pregame show,
So that's coming up Friday night, and if you want
to get ready for the Friday night action, the key
(08:06):
there is to make sure you tune in on Thursday
night right here on ninety six to one The Game.
As you get ready for each week of high school
football action by tuning into the LMC Preview Show Thursday
at six here at ninety six one. In the game,
host Brett Makita and Jason Hutton give detailed previews of

(08:27):
on your football weekend with LMCU Preview Show Thursday nights
at six here on ninety six to one. The Game.
All right, a lot going on. We're going to talk
with the Crusaders. Let just take one more quick time.
I'll come back with Craig tb the head coach of
the Unity Christian Crusaders here on nine to six to one.
The game coming to you live from Fox Mazda. We
(08:50):
roll on with the Fox Motors Piskin Party, coming to
you live from Fox maza on twenty ninth Street. Don't
forget to shout that SEX fifty hybrid thirty eight compiling
miles per gallon on highway end city thirty eight on
the c X fifty hybrid. Here at Fox Masa, we're
talking high school football with the Unity Christian Crusader's our
special guest, Craig Tibby, the veteran coach of the Crusaders.
(09:10):
Just like I'm a veteran announcer, you're a veteran coach, Craig.
Great to always see and off to another good start,
and it's a good time to be a Crusader right now.
Speaker 5 (09:18):
Sure, Yes, it has been a good start for us.
Guys have come around quickly and are doing a nice.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Job, boy, especially on the offensive side. And you're averaging
about fifty points a game right now and you're four
and oh start right now, you've got to be pleased offensively.
Speaker 5 (09:33):
Yeah, yep, you know, you never know. We replace a
lot of guys on offense coming in this year, and
so it's kind of up in the air. But they
have learned quickly. They've learned how to play hard, and
we got through some mental errors, but we looked a
little sharp this past week.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
So yeah, a big win last week against Seal and
East to fine program fifty to twelve, and the Okay
Gold opener for each of you as well. I want
to ask a little bit about replacing that, Craig, because
that's that's a not a simple offense that you run.
You know, it's a little bit complicated. It can be simple,
but the fine points are complicated. How do you lose
(10:09):
that much in terms of a replacement replacement players from
last year and just hit it running right at the start?
Speaker 5 (10:16):
It seems like kids have worked hard, you know, they've
worked hard in the off season to prepare and took
things pretty serious. So it's nice when you can get
in there and coach and the kids are paying attention.
They learn quickly and it helps things flow a little
sooner for you as the season gets going.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
Craig, you mentioned the off season. That's something I wanted
to ask you about because I talked to different coaches
about that and there's a real fine balance between getting
stuff in that's going to help you in the off
season and letting them enjoy their summer. How do you
balance that and have you changed it all over the
years with how you handle that summer work?
Speaker 5 (10:51):
Well? I don't know. I think that we're probably the fewest,
like here allowed what fifteen dates are something, and we
use four of those fifteen and then we also included
in that in the camp, so we don't overdo it.
I don't think, you know, we don't have to lift.
That's that's a non negotiable. You have to lift, but
(11:12):
all the other stuff if it works for you to
get there. If not, we'll work through it and and
hopefully be ready when the season rolls around.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
How are you different from the first and second year
head coach Craig Tibby today? Yeah, what do you do
differently that that?
Speaker 4 (11:25):
You know?
Speaker 2 (11:26):
I know, I do this differently than I started.
Speaker 5 (11:28):
I don't know. I think that for all of us,
for our coaching staff, we would definitely be more experienced,
more knowledgeable. You know, we started out we were all
pretty young and green at all that and and I
had a lot to learn ourselves. And but the kids
have been able to buy into what we do, and
we've been consistent with our coaches over the years, and
(11:48):
that's a blessing. So the kids know what to expect.
You're in and you're out.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Craig, you mentioned you know the coaching assistance. With that
and the continuity you've had through the years, how have
you been able to maintain the incredible duration of coaching
assistance that you've had.
Speaker 5 (12:05):
I'm not sure I've been very fortunate. I think, you know,
one of the key things we do enjoy being with
each other. We spend time with each other, you know,
outside of the season, and it's just I think it
becomes something that's where your friends with who you're working with,
that makes it easier, you know.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
The Trinity Health Michigan High School Football page is being
powered by Trinity Health. From our game of the Week schedules,

the Trinity Health Michigan High School Football page. At nine
to six won Thegame dot com one oh seven, m

our communities by going beyond hospital laws. We're gonna talk
(12:43):
a little bit more about your Crusaders here, but we
while we've got here, we can't let you get away
without bringing up a former Unity Christian player that is
on so many people's minds when they're watching Detroit Lions,
even though he hasn't played a lot but Isaac Tislaw,
your former cornerback, and he was a receiver one year
and a quarterback the next. Was that a right? Nope,
(13:04):
for he was QB the whole time. Okay, but what
an incredible thrill that has to be for you and
your staff to see a young man that played for
you in high school reached the pinnacle of the NFL.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
Yeah, we get to watch him tonight hopefully.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (13:21):
Yeah, No, it's pretty neat, pretty It's very special to see,
you know, we got to watch him grow up. Mark
his dad coached with us right away when we started.
He was one of the initial coaches and was there
for a long time, taught at Unity for I don't know,
along twenty five years, I'm guessing something like that, maybe more.
And so it's been a little bit more special, I think,
(13:44):
because we've known him so well.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
Yeah, and I understand, you know, he's he's made his
name nationally now with a couple of incredible one hand
and catches. But I was told that there was something
he used to do when warming up, involving one hand
that helped prepare him actually for that, tell us about that.
Speaker 5 (13:59):
I think he did that. I've heard him talk about
that too. He did that with his dad all the
time at home, but he would before practice. He caught
everything with one hand, never with two. So I guess
it worked out.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Okay, didn't that I think it did is you probably
are too busy. You're gonna get chance to see him
play in person at all this year.
Speaker 5 (14:16):
We did go last week. Oh, you got a group
of us that were able to go down. We had
kind of a unique thing. Our youth football was down
there playing on the field after the game, so he
was able to step out for five ten minutes and
talk to those kids.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
To watch that game.
Speaker 5 (14:31):
So pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
That's great. All right, back to your team here, Okay,
obviously you like being four and oh and clicking, and
you had some comfortable games at least on the scoreboard.
But this team still has to get better. What areas
are you still looking for improving on this squad?
Speaker 5 (14:47):
I think that you know, I almost speak offensively, but
we need to be able to adjust to the fronts
that we're facing a little quicker, be a little cleaner
on some of that stuff. And we did a much
better job this past game of adjusting and cleaning things
up in the backfield. So we're heading in the right
direction now. Hopefully we can continue to stay healthy and
(15:07):
go from there.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
What's the personality of this team, like Craig, Well.
Speaker 5 (15:12):
They're fun to be around. They have been working really,
really hard. It's a good group to be coaching right now.
They're enjoying their time together and so that's fun to see.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
Can they get a little goofy too? I eat a
little bit.
Speaker 5 (15:24):
Yeah, I'm not a team.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
For that, but they do have their fun and they're
good students.
Speaker 5 (15:31):
Yes, yes, I hope so.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
Well, that's a priority at Unity Christian, isn't it.
Speaker 6 (15:36):
You bet?
Speaker 2 (15:36):
You've always had some top not student athletes. Craig Tibby.
It's always a pleasure Visitlar with you and the Crusaders.
What's said we get to some of your guys. What
do you think?
Speaker 7 (15:43):
You bet?
Speaker 5 (15:43):
It sounds great.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
Thanks, that's great, coach, Craig Tibby, Unity Christian Crusaders. We
are going to take a quick time out come back
with a couple of players from Unity Christian as we
roll on with the Fox Motors Pigskin Party coming Alive
from Fox Masa just east of the belt Line on
twenty ninth Street. The Fox Motors Pigskin Party rolls on
(16:07):
from Fox Mazda on twenty ninth Street and Rick Jerky
in the saddle right now and join visiting with the
Unity Christian Crusaders. You're going to get to a couple
of players right now. Justin Phoebus is a senior quarterback
and safety on this team. Also plays baseball for the Crusaders,
And we'll ask actually a little bit about that, justin
compare the two sports and how you approach it, because
they're drastically different.
Speaker 6 (16:29):
Football is it's a physical game and there's a mental side.
But I think baseball can have a more mental game
because it's just you out there in the baseball and
you got to make the play, especially like an outfield.
He's a pop fly and it's coming there and you
just got to sit under there and make sure you
catch the ball.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
What position are you playing baseball?
Speaker 8 (16:46):
Uh?
Speaker 6 (16:47):
Outfield for the most part, play a little center field,
a little left field.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Are you better baseball or football player?
Speaker 8 (16:52):
Do you think better football player?
Speaker 2 (16:54):
Yeah? What about your summer? What did you do this
summer to get ready for the football season?
Speaker 4 (16:58):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (16:58):
Lifted weights hard and went to seven on seven's. Yeah,
Justin anatomy is your favorite class you already Christian. Tell
us why you're like anatomy class.
Speaker 4 (17:06):
Uh?
Speaker 6 (17:08):
Well, I want to go to college for like kinesiology
and that stuff, and I enjoy learning about the body
and what it can do.
Speaker 8 (17:17):
Helps in sports too, And.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
You so kinesiology you're gonna take at Calvin. You're gonna
go to Calvin next year. Yeah, and play football, play
some football there too. So what do you think you
would have done if Calvin hadn't started football a few
years ago?
Speaker 4 (17:31):
Uh?
Speaker 8 (17:31):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (17:32):
I'd always gone that question before because my dad works
at Colen.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
So I know that I know your dad.
Speaker 6 (17:37):
Everyone thought I was gonna go to Kellen, but I
didn't want to go to Kelvin because they didn't have football.
But then I had football, so then I'm like, all right,
I want to go to Callen Justin.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
Your brother was a big influence your life. Tell us
about him.
Speaker 6 (17:48):
Uh, well, I've always grown up competing against my brother,
always playing like sports in the yard in the basement.
Speaker 2 (17:53):
How much older is he?
Speaker 6 (17:55):
He's three years older than me. Okay, and he's a
junior at Calvin right now? All right?
Speaker 2 (18:00):
Uh, you like pulled pork before the game. Huh, well
he's he's being listened to. This guy, a man after
our own heart favorite musical group the Beatles. Yeah, I
love that? Yeah did did you? Did your folks force
that down you or did you pick it up?
Speaker 6 (18:19):
My dad would always the Beatles be like before going
to bed, So then I don't know, it just always stuck.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
If that's not old school enough for you, justin Phoebus's
favorite TV show Scooby Doo. Yeah, that's that is as
great as well. One thing justin We ask every player
that appears on the show to think back all the
way from high school, middle school, elementary school and think
of their all time favorite teacher at any level. Who
was your all time favorite and and why?
Speaker 9 (18:44):
Uh?
Speaker 8 (18:44):
I said, mister pro my eighth grade teacher.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
What's special about mister Pearl?
Speaker 8 (18:49):
Uh?
Speaker 6 (18:49):
Well, he always wanted to know you. He he came
up to you and was helping you out in English,
and English isn't my best subject and he would try
to help me out in that.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
Well, that's nice if you have told him how special
he was, Uh I think so? You think so, well,
that means you probably didn't, so you probably should go
tell him that next time, he said, just by the way,
I really appreciate you teaching me. It means the world
of a teachers. He's still teaching. Yeah, he's still teaching.
All right, that's fantastic.
Speaker 10 (19:12):
All right.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
Where do you have to get better as a quarterback
and a safety? Justin uh, you get.
Speaker 6 (19:18):
Better at quarterback on my reads and just keep on
leading the team good. And then at safety you need
to be able to break on the ball a little
bit quicker.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
It's kind of nice for you in a way because
as safety and quarterback. When you're safety, you're reading the
other team's quarterback, and a quarterback you're reading the other
team safety. Right, Yeah, you know he's helping each other
as well. All right, how do you assess the team's
play so far? I mean, four and oh is about
as good as you can get in the record, Colm, But
you got to get better in some ways, I'm sure.
Speaker 6 (19:45):
Well. We start off the first like three weeks it
was a little sloppy play, and then I think last
week we made a little bit of a swing and
started playing a little bit cleaner and it was good.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
All right. Before you pass the microphone over, we're going
to ask you to tell me something about Lucas, not
as a player, but as a person. What makes Lucas
a good guy?
Speaker 4 (20:04):
Uh?
Speaker 6 (20:04):
Well, he's always looking out for you, and he's he's
a good teammate, a good friend, and he's positive guy.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
Maybe you go first. All right, good job. Pass the
microphone over there, Lucas to Lucas Elliot. I'm sorry, that
was justin justin thank you. Lucas Ellie the senior running
back and cornerback on this team and also runs track.
What events do you do in track, Lucas.
Speaker 7 (20:29):
I run the two hundred. I've done long jump. I'm
not doing long jump anymore though.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
Why not? Did you have a nasty landing or something?
It sounds like you had a story.
Speaker 10 (20:36):
During my last long jump attempt and we're quitting that
for now.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Okay, did you land funny?
Speaker 10 (20:41):
I tore my hamstring on that one.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
Really, so you were? It happened before you even probably
before you even left the ground, right. Wow, that's fantastic.
You like drawing class? You already tell us tell us
about that class and what what kind of drawing you
do with it.
Speaker 7 (20:55):
We're just starting basic drawing. I'm doing some cross hatching,
but I like it. Because I get to use my
creative creativity side of me that I don't usually get
to do in other classes.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
What do you think that creativity side comes from?
Speaker 10 (21:07):
No idea, I've always done it.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
Have you always been interested in drawing though?
Speaker 10 (21:12):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (21:12):
I like art.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
Yeah that's fantastic. You have not decided where you're going
to go to school yet next year, But tell us
about a couple of schools you're thinking about.
Speaker 7 (21:20):
And why I'm thinking about Grand Valley Western. I like
him because they're close to home. I'm a homebody, like
to stay home, so good.
Speaker 4 (21:27):
Options for me.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
You want to be a business major though, yes, what
I get. It's a long ways off. But what are
you kind of thinking maybe you could do with that
business degree whenever you're done.
Speaker 4 (21:34):
With I don't know.
Speaker 7 (21:34):
I've always wanted to just create my own business. My
dad has two businesses himself, so it's following his steps.
Speaker 2 (21:41):
Nolan Voss was a big influence in your life. Telling
me who Nolan was and why he influenced you.
Speaker 7 (21:45):
Nolan he's been. He was the running back before me.
He always he was an inspiration because he was, you know,
varsity running back for three years. I looked up to
him when I was behind him last year, and now
I get to do what he does.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
These guys are winning the Honesty Award already this year,
with Justin saying that he watches Scooby Doo and Lucas
Elliott's favorite TV show, Curious George.
Speaker 10 (22:08):
Oh yeah, yeah, I love that, love that as a child.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
That's fantastic.
Speaker 6 (22:11):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
And I and guys, I don't know if they as teammates,
know that his favorite musical group, Katie Perry love her.
Oh they okay, they're they're they're they're looking at you.
They're looking at you over there, buddy. Running out of
the tunnel is a big part of your game night experience.
Tell us just kind of take us to someone who
haven't seen your team run out there. What that's like.
Speaker 7 (22:31):
Well, like the energy you get, the adrenaline rush you
feel running out onto the field before the game starts.
Speaker 10 (22:36):
It's amazing.
Speaker 2 (22:37):
You also have gone back to middle school to think
of your all time favorite teacher. Who is that? And why?
Speaker 10 (22:44):
Missus Hookstra? I don't know.
Speaker 7 (22:45):
She just we were really good, really close together. She's
an eighth grade volleyball coach. For me, we were just
good friends close.
Speaker 2 (22:53):
I love her, Lucas, who's the best singer on this team?
And you can't say it was you? Who's the best?
Speaker 7 (22:59):
I like Jared Devrees is a singer, all these things
on the bus right at home, it's really good.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
Who's the worst singer on this too?
Speaker 10 (23:05):
Worst singer?
Speaker 2 (23:07):
Let it fly?
Speaker 8 (23:07):
Come on, Brody?
Speaker 10 (23:08):
Scolding Brody? Brody not great at singing?
Speaker 2 (23:11):
Does he know he's not? Does he know he's lousy singer?
I don't know.
Speaker 10 (23:14):
He probably thinks he's a good singer. Yeah's not great.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
Most lousy singers aren't aware of how bad they are.
But Brody, he's not here to defend himself. He's not
because that's one of the rules. You don't make fun
of somebody that's gonna come with a microphone after you.
But that's good, all right, Lucas, I'm gonna have have
somebody you're as a running back. I'm gonna have a
scout's up there watching you, and that scout is you,
and that scout says, there's one thing I know that
(23:36):
running back does really well, and there's one thing I
know that running back's got to do better. What are
those two things that scout's gonna say?
Speaker 7 (23:42):
I think for I need to do better. I need
to like read read how I run better. Sometimes I
cut into the wrong spot and I get tackled because
of it.
Speaker 10 (23:52):
I'm really good.
Speaker 7 (23:53):
I usually if I get a breakaway, I'm not gonna
get caught very often. But I think I have that
speed is my good thing.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
All right, Well again, you certainly have to a great
start here, and we appreciate you stopping by. Lucas Elliott
and Justin Phoebus. Thanks so much, Best luck, copet yourself
a Pig Skin Party T shirt. All right, we'll take
a nice picture afterwards. Thanks for joining us.
Speaker 8 (24:13):
Guys.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
All right, we're gonna take a break. Come back with
a couple more Unity Christian Crusaders as we roll on

get interest as low as one point nine APR on
select new model. That's right, one point nine APR lease

still to go oh here before we're done tonight and
coach Craig Tibby has already joined us on the show.
(25:03):
Jonathan Hucker is a tight end and defensive end for
this team. Also runs track. What events do you compete
in track? Jonathan?
Speaker 4 (25:10):
I run the four.
Speaker 11 (25:11):
Hundred and the four by four and then I do
a high jump as a field event.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
It's quite a bit different as far as how you
approach track and feel as you approach football. Tell us
about the differences.
Speaker 11 (25:22):
Yeah, you know, football is a physical sport, so it's track,
but at least the events that I do, it's a
lot more endurance, whereas football is more you know, you're
going for five six seconds and then you get a
decent break between plays.
Speaker 2 (25:40):
You like shop class? Tell us what kind of projects
you're working on in shop?
Speaker 11 (25:44):
Not in one this semester, but I like working on
stuff with my hands and just doing stuff and building stuff.
Speaker 2 (25:50):
What's the biggest project you ever took on at home
and tour as far as building something or repairing something.
What's the biggest project at home?
Speaker 11 (25:59):
I felt my dad make counters of we had to
fix the boat last year and engine was not running properly,
so we had to fix that.
Speaker 2 (26:10):
Fix an engine, that's not that's not a small task.
Speaker 11 (26:13):
Yeah, we had somewhat the start of the Bendix broke.
Speaker 2 (26:18):
All right, okay, let's talk about this team. What do
you what do you think this team does well as
a team right now? And what do they have to
get better as a team? Do you think?
Speaker 11 (26:28):
Yeah, I think we do a great job just playing
as a team. And you know it's not you know,
one player, Oh, it's all about me. And then I
think we can get better by playing a little smoother
and not letting up when we get up by a
couple of points.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
Barbecue and mac and cheese. That's your night before they
did it? Right now? You pile that on, don't you?
All Right? What about after the game? What do you
guys eat after you go on your own or do
you guys?
Speaker 11 (26:54):
Yeah, we usually go to Vitalians over in Hudsonville.
Speaker 4 (26:58):
Get a cheese bread.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
Cheet Oh, I like cheesy bred that's great stuff. That
certainly is Levi offering a certainly special to you. Tell
us about.
Speaker 11 (27:07):
Levis, Yeah, I just like competing with him.
Speaker 4 (27:10):
He's a big guy, fast guy.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (27:14):
He pushed me to be a better player.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
You went all the way back to elementary school to
think of your all time favorite teacher. Tell us who
that was?
Speaker 11 (27:22):
Oh, yeah, mister Still's fourth grade teacher. He had some
class pets and I thought that was really cool as
a fourth grader.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
What kind of pets did you have?
Speaker 4 (27:31):
Oh, you had like four lizards and a turtle.
Speaker 2 (27:34):
That's cool. That's cool. You don't know where you're gonna
go to school right now next year, but tell us
about a couple of school if you're thinking about it.
What you'd like to take when you get to school.
Speaker 11 (27:44):
Yeah, right now I'm looking at Hope or Calvin as
possible options. And then, uh, I'd like to measure in kinesiology.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
What would you like to do with that kinesiology?
Speaker 8 (27:55):
Agree?
Speaker 11 (27:56):
I would like like dream job would be like a
strengthy nditioning coach at like a college or somewhere.
Speaker 2 (28:02):
Oh, that'd be fantastic, great to have as well, you're
gonna have to educate me here, Jonathan favorite TV show Wildcrats?
What does that show?
Speaker 11 (28:11):
Oh, there's an animal show. When I was younger, I
love that show.
Speaker 2 (28:15):
Is still out, it's still on odd somewhere. Yeah, you
can always find it somewhere as well. All right, who's
the best dancer on this team?
Speaker 4 (28:24):
Best dancer?
Speaker 2 (28:26):
We already know that your guy to your right is
the best singer. We've already been told that.
Speaker 4 (28:31):
Might have to be Lucas Elliott.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
Yeah, who's the worst dancer?
Speaker 4 (28:35):
Worst dancer? Jackson breaks jack.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
No hesitation at all about Jackson's Jackson's not over there,
is he?
Speaker 4 (28:42):
Nope?
Speaker 2 (28:43):
Okay, all right, good, all right? Speaking to Jackson? You
like another Jackson? Alan Jackson? Your country guy?
Speaker 4 (28:48):
Oh yeah?
Speaker 2 (28:49):
What other country music do you like?
Speaker 4 (28:51):
Johnny cash Is another good one?
Speaker 2 (28:53):
Oh you go old school?
Speaker 11 (28:54):
Yeah, old school country.
Speaker 4 (28:58):
Kenny Chesney's another good one.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
What's your favorite part of a home experience? I know
you guys don't have your own home field. Could you
play different fields for home? But the whole experience of
game night? What's your favorite part of everything that goes
into that?
Speaker 4 (29:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (29:11):
I like that we don't have to drive an hour
and a half or an hour to get back home,
you know, get done with the game, win or lose.
You're tired, and I usually just want to go home afterwards.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
That's great, Jonathan, and I'm going to pass the mic
over here to Jared before you don't what you tell
me what makes Jared a good guy? Besides the fact
that he can sing, tell me something good about Jared.
Speaker 11 (29:33):
Jared's a hard worker. He's a good leader on this team,
and he's never never gonna make someone else do something
that he's not willing to do.
Speaker 2 (29:43):
All right, let's pass it over. Thanks for stopping by. Jonathan.

Our one oh seven game of the week is Grand
Haven at West Ottawa from the Okay Red Division. Jared DeVries,
also known as j D, is a senior linebacker and
running back with Unity Christian also plays baseball. What position
(30:26):
do you play in baseball?
Speaker 12 (30:28):
Jared, I'm the catcher catcher and then a little bit
of third in there too.
Speaker 2 (30:32):
Do you what do you like about baseball that's different
from football?
Speaker 12 (30:36):
I would say, uh, it's a lot like football is
pretty mental like it's pretty mental toll too, with being
able to put your body on the line every play.
But baseball it's a lot harder to keep your head up.
You know, baseballs on other sports where you can fail.
You know, you can fail seven out of ten times
and still be a pro ball player, whereas any other
sport you fail seven out of ten times and you're
not gonna be doing so good.
Speaker 2 (30:55):
So your older siblings were a big part of your life,
Tell us about them.
Speaker 12 (30:59):
Yes, I grew up with two older brothers and then
an older sister and competing with them in any sport.
You know, they wouldn't let me play unless I could
do what they could do, so in order to play
with them, and I hated being left out and not
being able to do stuff with them. So I had
to get better at everything I was doing and get
stronger and bigger and be able to play with them.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
As a current player, We're gonna be Christian. What does
it mean to you to to see a former Crusader
like Isaac Taslat playing NFL football on Sundays?
Speaker 12 (31:27):
Yeah, it's it's awesome. I mean seeing them out there
is uh is really cool. It's inspiring to just knowing
that someone from here, someone that played on the same
field again with the same coaches, is now playing and
you know, the NFL on the Lions, his dreams uh team.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
So oh, you're kind of like me favorite night before
the game food Panda Express. Well, I think you take
me down the line and tell me what you're putting
on that on those trace Yeah.
Speaker 12 (31:52):
So we got we got a couple of options. So
I'm I'm a big Panda guy. I think I've put
a lot of money into Panda Express. So the main one,
my favorite that from there is their orange chicken, their
classic orange chicken. That's it's very good. There's not very
much food that's better than that, if there is any,
but we'll go bigger plate. We'll go half half fried rice,
(32:13):
half chal maine, and then we'll go Sometimes we'll go
triple orange chicken. If I'm really feeling orange chicken, we'll
go double orange chicken, taraiaki chicken. Maybe some the veggie
or Brocolian beef, beef and broccoli. Really anything from there.
You can't go wrong with orange air with a panda.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
Express, I agree completely with that. Your favorite class is
metals class. What do you do in metals class?
Speaker 12 (32:35):
Yeah, so we're welding right now. I'm doing some oxya
settling welding, So.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
All right, say that again, educate me here.
Speaker 12 (32:41):
Oxyacettling, I don't say.
Speaker 8 (32:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (32:43):
So it's welding with you have a flame that's made
up of oxygen and acetylene gas, and then you, yes,
you heat up, the metal gets like a puddle of
melted metal, and then you dip in some filler rod
to fill in that puddle. That creates that weld and
brings the two pieces of metal together.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
All right, So what kind of objects are you molding?
Molding together? Here?
Speaker 4 (33:03):
What does it?
Speaker 2 (33:03):
What does it become when you're done with it.
Speaker 12 (33:05):
Right now, we're just doing straight just like two sheets
of metal starting the process. Yeah, okay, so we're not
doing putting really anything together right now. Who was Jared
Debries's all time favorite teacher and why? Mister Ponstein, who
was a teacher throughout middle school.
Speaker 4 (33:22):
I just loved him.
Speaker 12 (33:22):
He was our baseball coach too, and he just really
he got to know you really good, and he really
liked that connection that he had with you, and I
could relate to him on a lot of things because
he loves sports as well.
Speaker 2 (33:33):
JD. You don't know where you're gonna go to school yet,
but you want to take electoral engineering when you do
get there. What would you like to do with that?
What do you think when you're done with college?
Speaker 4 (33:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 12 (33:40):
So I've always liked, you know, creating things, and I've
always been decent at math, so I thought, you know,
engineer would be pretty cool being the one behind. Uh
what's like creating and everything?
Speaker 11 (33:51):
So?
Speaker 2 (33:52):
What are you like eating after the game? We know
about before the game? What about after the game? Though?
Speaker 12 (33:58):
Y'all also have italies sometimes the cheesy read or I'll
go to some Buffalo Wild wings, get some get a
pick six from there. During the football season, they got
that pick six. So twenty wings and two sides of fries.
Speaker 2 (34:09):
You can eat all that yourself. Oh easily, big eater,
they say, big big.
Speaker 8 (34:15):
I love my food.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
Now you got to sing something for us. It's something,
give me something to sing, guys, Come on, I.
Speaker 12 (34:21):
Don't know if I'm much of a singer solo here.
Speaker 10 (34:24):
I don't.
Speaker 9 (34:26):
No.
Speaker 12 (34:26):
I love singing some praise music in the likewise, in
the locker room, praise by hillsong, worship or I thank God, stuff.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
Like that is creation stuff.
Speaker 12 (34:36):
Yeah, oh yeah, singing just praise is pretty ype song
to get in the locker room. The whole team will
get going clapping to it, and that before the game,
usually before the game, after the game, on the bus
ride there, bus ride back, during practices, all the time.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
Well fantastic. Well yep, you're a great leader. I can
tell with that. So we won't we won't make you sing.
We were trying to nudge you a little bit, but
we're not going to make that as well. Charity Brees,
thanks for stopping by along with Jonathan Hucker, and we're
gonna take a little time out back one more Crusaders
still join us on the Fox Motors Piskin Party coming
to you live from Fox Masa on twenty ninth Street.
Stay with us interview from the Unity Christian Crusaders here
(35:15):
on the Fox Motors Pickskin Party at twenty ninth Streets.
Don't forget only at Fox Mazda, all purchased or lease
vehicles new only received one year maintenance free two services.
That's right, one year free maintenance purchase or LEAs vehicles
new only here only at Fox Masa. What a great
opportunity that is to get your vehicle taken care of.
(35:36):
There's any one more segment here with the Unity Christian Crusaders.
Luke Vanderswag is a tight end in corner for the Crusaders.
He also is thinking about doing track and field. You
haven't done it before, is that correct?
Speaker 10 (35:47):
I did it my sophomore year.
Speaker 9 (35:49):
I think I just did the one hundred and the
two hundred, and I was thinking about doing pole vault too,
but I ended up not doing that. I didn't really
like the pull vaulteam that much, but the one on
your into one drive really didn't enjoy running that.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
You play tight end and corner on defense, And uh,
what if coach says to you you could only play
on one side of the ball this week, which side
you're gonna choose?
Speaker 8 (36:14):
And why.
Speaker 10 (36:16):
I think I gotta go corner?
Speaker 9 (36:17):
I think I just enjoyed defense more kind of fun
being in coverage against receivers.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
And yeah, you intercepted the pass last week, right, Yeah
I did cost somebody some cheeseburgers. Yeah.
Speaker 9 (36:29):
One of our coaches, Coach Trees, anytime we get an
interception or a turnover, he always buy the whole team cheeseburgers.
Very generous of him.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
What is this musical group, Big X, Big X, the
Plug Big One of my friends Rocco Martini.
Speaker 9 (36:46):
He loves to listen to that, and I think he's
pretty good too.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
It's a pretty good guy.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
All right. The night before the game food, Now, this
is a little involved. You're gonna have to go through
this one kit slowly.
Speaker 11 (36:58):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (36:59):
One of the restaurants out in Zealand, Franks or Farmhouse,
two great restaurants, really good food at both the places.
Speaker 4 (37:06):
For Franks.
Speaker 9 (37:07):
If I end up going there, I'd probably just get
a double bacon cheeseburger. Farmhouse, I'd either get the baked
Mac or the Crispy Chicken wrap.
Speaker 8 (37:18):
Both are really really good.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
With fries, I take it.
Speaker 4 (37:21):
Oh yeah, of.
Speaker 9 (37:21):
Course, and honey mustard too with those fries.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
Ap Us History is Luke Vanderswak's favorite class at Unity.
Tell us why you like us history so much.
Speaker 9 (37:30):
I just liked the class and learning about United States hisstory.
I really love history and all that stuff. The class
was super fun. The teacher, mister de May, great guy.
Some days he really loved having us as a class.
Other days, I don't know. He would get a little
annoyed with us sometimes, but it was fun.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
Your grandfather was a big part of your life. Tell
us about how your grandpa and for us chair.
Speaker 9 (37:54):
Yeah, he did baseball when he was younger. He's all
into sports, loves sports. He's always talking to us about sports.
And he's always been a great encourager. He's a pastor too,
so he's always being just a great guy to be
around in a good encourager for everybody around our family.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
You don't know where you're going to go to school
right now, Luke, but tell us about a couple of
schools you're thinking about, or what you might like to
take wherever you end up going.
Speaker 9 (38:19):
I'm thinking either just Grand Rapids Community College or Grand
Valley one of the two just close to home, nearby.
Speaker 2 (38:28):
And take what do you think?
Speaker 12 (38:31):
Probably just GRCC just because it's cheaper.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
No, but no, what classes we want to sorry? Sorry? Business?
Speaker 9 (38:41):
Yep, that was one of business and any just finances.
I do business because my parents are both business owners.
Maybe could pick up one of those in the future.
And then finances. I just kind of like working with
money also.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
All right, Luke, let's think back through all your education
and who was your favorite all time teacher and why again?
Speaker 9 (39:03):
Back to mister de May just he was such a
fun guy, great guy. Get did you teach the ap
United States history?
Speaker 2 (39:10):
Okay, that's right.
Speaker 9 (39:11):
Yeah, he was just super fun, great guy to be around.
He's on the sidelines for our games too, doing stats.
Just a funny, great guy. Love to have him as
a teacher.
Speaker 2 (39:21):
What do you like to do in your time away? No,
it's not school, not sports, just for yourself. What do
you do there? Do you have a hobby or anything
you like to do just on your own.
Speaker 9 (39:30):
Just hanging out with friends kind of doing anything. Most
of the time, it's just relaxing at home. Honestly and
just chilling.
Speaker 2 (39:38):
All right. A teacher gives grades out, I don't have
you give a grade out to the Crusaders so far
through four games. Obviously you're four and oh so you're
you're passing for sure. But what grade would you give
this team right now? Based on what you how you've
played and what the coaches have told you. You've done
well and maybe not well.
Speaker 9 (39:57):
I'd had to go with probably like an A. I
think we've been doing great, good job with everybody. Everyone's
been doing well. There's a lot we can improve on
still throughout the rest of the season, but I think
so far it's been going great, awesome.
Speaker 2 (40:09):
Well again with with with the four wins and decisively
and most of them, that's an understandable grade as well.
All right, Well, Luke, thanks for stopping by and best
of luck to you. This week. The Crusaders have four
Soil Central. This week's at home? Are you at here
on the road this week? I we're away for that
one at FHC. That's right. But homecoming was last week?
(40:30):
Is that right?
Speaker 4 (40:30):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (40:31):
That was last week?
Speaker 2 (40:31):
Tell us about what's the home.
Speaker 10 (40:33):
Of the school week?
Speaker 9 (40:38):
Leading up to the dance, we kind of the student
council organize this stuff. You just do like dress up days,
some fun games at lunch and at break time and
all that stuff. Then Friday night is also just the
football game. Then there's also the powder puff game with
the junior and senior girls. And then we get to
(40:59):
coach on and that was pretty fun too.
Speaker 2 (41:02):
That was fun. Yes, great, great, great, well, Luke, thanks
for stopping by Best of Luxury this weekend beyond and
we look for big things for you down the road.
Speaker 10 (41:09):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (41:10):
We want to thank Luke Vanders Wag as well as
the other players Justin Phoebus, Lucas Elliot, Jonathan Hucker, Charity Brees,
and of course coach Craig Tibby for joining us from
Unity Christian High School. We'll take one more break and
tell you about what's coming up again this Friday night
in our high school coverage on ninety six. Won the game.
(41:31):
One quick segment left here on the Fox Motors Pigskin Party.
Coach Tech Tibby back in here to talk about Victory Day.
They had it nine days ago, a special day at
Unity Christian Victory Day. Craig tell us about what's involved
with that.
Speaker 5 (41:43):
Yes, we have an opportunity as a program and community
to come together and get some special people in with
special abilities and give them a day and afternoon of
