Pikin along with Buck Gino, let's kick it over to
my partner right now before the opening kickoff and our

But I'll start with the Rams. They got to find
an identity, Brett.

They just offensively have struggled the last two weeks, and
even the game we covered against Grahamville really didn't start
getting things moving until the second half. They've got a
simple simplify things, do what works, and build off of that.
For the Caledonia Scotts, they just got to get off
to a good start. I mean, the only loss they've
had they got off to a terrible start. But we
see when they get off to good starts both on

both sides of the ball, they're able to control the game.

Aaron Collins, a super sophomore wide receiver, takes on the
fly to five of the far sideline, picking his way

And I also think that losing air, I'm sorry, winning
the toss for Rockford and not taking the ball, that
tells you where their mindset is right now, Brett usually,
Brent Cummins and Jason Rayland want that rock right off
the bat. Instead they defer, and now they're going to
try to get Caledonia a stop on.

For Caledonia up front and with the wide receiving corps,
they've got a lot of weapons. Parker Little is one
senior wide out five to eleven to one eighty Number
three Read Vogler is a guy that can catch the
football out of the back, but he's their primary running back.
Also a senior five eleven two ten. Aaron Collins one
of the talented sophomore seven touchdown gotches for Colins so
far this season through five games. The other one is

They work him in the slot and we see him
now inside on the trips left to the Wine side
of the field. Second and ten, after no game Betser,
out of the pistol formation, takes this snap, has time
flix it out there looking for his sophomore receiver, Aaron
Collins with a catch, went over the Rams defender and
he's got it in rock for territory inside the forty
five down to the forty three yard line.

Great protection for Betser, has a clean look and then
Colins just braced to the inside. It was supposed to
be safety helped, but he broke away and what a
throw by Betser, right on target to Kalins just.

Dropped into the bucket, flicked it over the top. What
a catch by Collins, went up in high point of
the ball. We have a rams defender down back inside
the Caldoni at twenty. We'll try to get an on that. Meanwhile,

When talking to Derek Pennington this week and you and
I kind of conversed email with him, they have a
young offensive line. They lost a lot of big fellas
from a year ago, and he said, bets are so good.
He's a Tiffin University commit that you know what, I'm
going to throw the ball up a lot because wide
receiver is their strongest position.

Well, they went last year for a bruising running attack
with Brock Townsend and Derrick Pennington junior, but now they
have a wide open spread attack.

And we kind of saw that last year they in the.

Speaker 4 (03:39):
Rockford game that they played up there where they wanted
to run the football, but then when they got Dollan Brody,
Betser was able to throw the ball and do it
well and do it effectively. So we kind of thought
after coming into this year that that might be the case,
and indeed it is got a number for you on
that Rockford player down That was Braylen Ray, the defensive end.

Boy, they can't afford any more injuries.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
They've already got Sam Cummings ound, they got Kate Freeze
out to their starting linebackers.

I think they have some backups.

But you're right the injuries for Rockford and the depth
is now being tested in that defensive front seven because
as you mentioned, Sam Cummings going out for the year, now,
Brylen Ray being assisted to the sideline. They're getting banged
up and man, it's just tough to see. Hopefully Braylin's
able to come.

Back first down in ten, as he did walk off
with the help of the trainers, but was putting some
way down at first down in ten. Two buy receivers
each way for Brody Betzer out of the pistol, takes
a snap looking looking fires to his right. Gud a

coverage that time with Mikey to Kuiper over there defensively

Rockford showing blitz. They've got four down linemen. Here comes
the pressure from the outside. They're gonna set up the
screen almost intercept a nice jime making a catch, hanging
on to it now and working his way back across
close to that first style marker inside the forty he's
down to the Rockford thirty five. A one handed catch
by Reid Vogler.

Boy thatcher Wilson was just kind of there and almost
got a big pawn and they run a little twist
game inside.

The a gap and all of a sudden he's looking
at what's that ball doing here? Oh, it's going going
to the running back. He almost is able to get it,
but boy, it's a great playbayer by vogelar because that's
in traffic. He breaks one tackle and then picks up eight.
They kind of a busted play, but a nice job
by Vogelar the senior to get something.

Third and two for Caledonia from the Rockford thirty five.
This is the design quarterback on the delay and he's
got the first down spinning out of a tackle with
the thirty three is Betser to the thirty one yard line.
That'll move the chains needed a couple picked up about
four and Betser comes in as the leading rusher as
well in this spread offense for Derek Pennington and the

Fighting Scotts. When you look at his number, sixty two
carries in five games, coming in three hundred and fifty
seven yards and six touchdowns, he's responsible to twenty four
touchdowns so far, eighteen through the air for this cal offense.

Yeah, and then Brody, like you said, a tiff and
comment obviously on the radar of some other colleges as well.
You can see the talent there and also the size
and he's still got some room to grow too. Just impressive.

First and ten from the thirty one of Rockford. Here
comes the delayed blitz rolling to his right avoids it,
Betser throws across his body complete at the sixteen. He's
got his man inside the fifteen, fighting down to the thirteen.
That's Senior Parker, little number three, first down in ten Caledonia.
You gotta love the composure of Betser in this offensive
line right now, holding up a little bit. They don't
need to give him a ton of time, but you

gotta give him some time. That time he bought a
little more time with his feet.

Well, they gave enough to kind of go through the progressions.
But then as you said, extends the play out to
the right and Little just finds a saft spot in
that big zone defense and Betser had the right there
an eighteen yard pickup on again, just a play that
didn't look like much from the start, but Betser did
a great job of improvising a little bit and letting

his receiver work open.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Rate Vogler to the right out of the pistol formation
of Brody Betser on first and tent inside the rams fifteen,
Betser takes a snap pressure throwing towards the corner and incomplete.
Isaac Poot was over there defensively, but that time, a
little miscommunication between Betser and Collins. Collins was going towards
the post, not towards the corner, and Betser throwing the fade.

Well, the other miscommunication, I guess it wasn't really a miscommunication,
it was lookout because yeah, there were three rams almost
right on top of Betzer as he threw the ball.
And I think he throws that went away because he
knows that's the least dangerous spot. But Randy Vanderven get
that blitzpiggot and he's turning it up because they rush.

That time they bring six, and don't be surprised if
they continue with that level of pressure.

Leam Moore junior off alignement Coach Pennington tell us they're
very young there now. When they do use an h back,
it'll be Colton Sheely, number thirty. He's at junior five
to nine, one ninety five. Also on the offensive line,
Junior Cody Meyers sixty seven. Kay Spencer is a freshman

playing out the varsity offensive line six with two sixty
and then Brian Martin rounds out that front. Get a
lot of those guys were coming back next year getting
good experience this year. Junior sixty three to three hundred
is Martin third down and eight from the Rockford eleven
two wide receivers each way. Now the motion sent you
to the wide side of the field to make trips
that way. Betser takes a snap rolling that way, flushed

out of the pocket, throws across the middle up and incomplete.
He had it, but couldn't hang on. Good job by
the defensive back for Rockford to knock it away at
the last minute as he was looking for Parker Little.

Well, that's great coverage there by the defensive back. His
Betzer bailed out to the right side, and then his
receiver Little works across the back line and he tries
to find him there. But good defense there to knock away.
And now it's gonna be fourth down. It looks like
Bratt they're gonna go for it.

junior defensive back. They'll rotate a lot of people in

across incomplete. They try to go a little misdirection that

I think with seventy yards to go, though, if you're
gonna go, if you're gonna go with that play, I
think you probably are better sure to try to get
in the end zone. I get where they're going there,
but that's just a great defensive play by the linebacker,
and Betser did a good job of dirting it there.
But boy, I kind of feel like they left a
little bit there because now it's zero zero and Rockford

has the ball again deep in their own territory, but
they've got some momentum.

Man in motion left to right, Isaac Pooter's a home
run here over the left side, got a crease across
the twenty, breaks a tackle across the thirty. Still on
his feet, now down the sideline, Parker Little trying to
get the angle. He's not gonna hitside the twenty, inside
the ten, touchdown. Isaac Poot goes the house eighty nine
yards for the score and one of the keys.

one inside the five trickles into the end zelling in
high school football. Automatic touchback, so seven thirty eight left
to go. Rockford defense gets a stop and then they
hand it to number thirty four, who just slices and dices,
spins his way through and then off to the races.
If you get behind him, you're not going to catch

number thirty four. Isaac boot eighty nine yards a one
play drive to the house, tack on the extra point.
Rockford leads at seven to nothing.

Oh I said they needed an identity, and part of
that was kind of getting back to basics. Well, it's
nothing more basic than off tackle left for ninety yards
down the field, and that's what they're able to do.
And now huge momentum swing both sides, not only stopping
caldoy on offense, but now getting that seven to nothing
lead early.

And of course the strength of the Rockford offense, even
Brent Cummins and staff will tell you that offensive line
they look like it. There they swing it out complete
on a little curl route to Vogler in traffic, but
makes the catch at the twenty four, dropped right there
by this Rockford defense. They'll give him forward progress to
the twenty five, so a gain of five second and five.
Let's set that defense for you very active. We mentioned

Chase Pitch on the outside one quarter made that nice
play knocking a way in the end zone. Riley Well
number four is the other. Isaac Poters won safety, Luca
Hearn the other. And I tell you what, You're not
going to get a better safety Paer than those two
in the West Michigan area. Kyle Hoffman is an outside
linebacker along with Andrew Hamilton number thirty nine inside. Why
Colston reed, Benny, they've really been hurt with injuries there.

(14:50):
Sam Cummings has been out since the preseason starting linebacker
at junior returning, didn't get a chance to playing in
Kate frees and they kind of move him around.

Speaker 3 (14:58):
Is out for this game as well.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
In trouble is Betser avoids a defender going back to
the way to buy some time and now why is
he just gonna throw it out of bounds and throw
it away? Did have an attended receiver Lincoln Sentee in
the area. So incomplete good pressure by Rockford defensively. Third
and five coming up for the fighting Scotts.

So they drop into a four man front there they
bring Andred Hamilton down puts his hand in the ground
and lines up as a true defensive end, and that
kind of messes up the blocking scheme because Rockford traditionally
a three man front with the linebackers, and now they
drop into a four man front. And that was not
good blocking by Caledonia. As part of it's because of
the confusion that they had. And then a great job

by Betser to not get sad. I mean, he was
backed by the five yard line and he had to
do some fancy footwork just to get that ball into
the sideline.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
Good news Braylan raiinn number ninety seven, we see back
out there in the far defensive van and he now
will try to get pressure on Betser, swings it out complete,
got the first down. Nice job up the sideline. Aaron
Collins with another grab. He's across the thirty five out
to the thirty needed five picked up eleven, move the change,
and I tell you what bets are another strike?

What I like about those?

A nice soft ball, but right in the bread basket,
so as wide receivers can turn and get those yards
after the catch.

Well, it throws it to him in stride, and so
many times where receiver receivers try to go against the
grain right they catch it and they want to spin
to the inside. Well, if you're throwing it right there,
there's no reason to spin to the inside. You just
take the momentum, get up the sideline and get what
you can. And that's exactly what happened there with Collens.
Nice pitch and catch on third down.

Cow's leader receiver coming in twenty one catches through five games,
three hundred and forty yards and seven touchdowns, first down

He doesn't stay in one place more very often and
very long at a time. But boy, he just so
mobile and nimble and again he just throws that ball
away and people out incomplete pass. But boy, I mean,
that's a lot of work there. Obviously, the Rams want
to get pressure on him, and they've been able to

get to him, but they have not been able to
take him down because of Betser's es capability.

Reid Vogler offset to the left of bets Are on
second and ten working for their own thirty six three
wide receivers left one right, want to set up the
bubble screen coming back to make the Cats trying to
get to the outside and dropped at the forty for
a short gain of four. Nice job of coming up
and a quick tackle by the safety Isaac Poot as
it was complete that time to light and think. So

third and six coming up now for Caledonia. Just under
five and a half to play in this one seven
to nothing. Rockford over Caledonia in the opening quarter.

When they get those short routes, you can see the
rock still the team speed on defense. Poot coming all
the way from the safety spot to make the tackle
on that short screen. But that's what they're gonna have
to do, is to get that pressure down a little bit.
Those short routes have to be available, but it's a
really nice job there by.

Poot to seal it off and just minimize the impact.

Empty backfield, three wide receivers to the right, white side,
the field too to the left. Betser takes a snap,
sets fires incomplete, looking for the short out that time

member for Caledonia. So not a live football and they're
gonna mark it dead where it hit him at the
thirty six yard line of Rockford, So not a big
net gain there for the punt team.

No, and that one almost blocked as well, almost being
the operative word, but still not a great punt. And then,
like you said, Brad, it hits a cal gunner in
the back and really takes away any role that they
might have gotten. So Rockford getting pretty darn good field
position to start the second drive of the contest.

Speaker 2 (19:29):
Reid Vogeler is there, leading tackler, the linebacker coming in.
He's a senior starting both ways. Thirty eight total tackles
coming in one I in t as well as this
Caledonia defense trying to answer her down seven to nothing
after the stop by Rockford defensively Braydon Daniels designed quarterback
keeper nothing much there, good second effort to get out

across the forty to the forty two gim McGain of
three second down and seven. You also have Parker little
in there, goes both ways late and Fink two defensive backs. Rivers,
New Island's a guy to keep an eye on. He
was injured a lot last year six one, two twenty.
This guy will tackle his mom coming into the stadium.

Speaker 4 (20:07):
Yeah, and you look at we talked about injuries last
year Caledonia had some real key injuries in Keyspots. You
talk about river swallowing being one, and.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
That's now something that Rockford is having to deal with.

Speaker 2 (20:18):
Braydon Daniels now fires to Mikey to Kuiper and he's
immediately sandwiched by two cal defenders after a short gain,
little curl route inside is the motion to man that
way to flood the zone to the wide side, and
he's got it at the forty four, but he's gonna
be a good five yard short. So third and five
coming up for this Rams offense, I'll see if junior
quarterback Braydon Daniels can get it done here. Remember only

one offensive touchdown last week, and that loss to Jennison.
The other one came from the defense.

This is where Daniel's feet can help extend the play
a little bit. If it's going to be a pass,
I don't imagine it'll be something deep down the field,
but just got to be careful for Caledonia that one
single safety is trying to help on that wide side to.

Speaker 2 (21:00):
Kuiper motion right to left. They like to run the
jet sweep. Daniels pump fake throws across.

Speaker 3 (21:04):
The middle, intercepted when he pump fake.

Speaker 2 (21:06):
That gave the safety time to come up and makes
the pick that time at the midfield stripe coming in
there for Caledonia to pick it off was Colin Kowatch,
the senior linebacker six ' three one ninety five playing
more of a safety position.

Speaker 4 (21:20):
They are, well, they bring me to the Kuiper in motion,
so that means the safety keys down. Coach rotates up
high and then Daniels, like you said, he kind of
double clutches there. It's open, but that little double clutch.
Let's coach step in front of the football. A big
turnover after Caledonia had to turn it over and they
get the ball at midfield. This is a big momentum.

We now can cal take advantage.

Yeah, I said pump fake, but you were right, partner
double clutch. It's like he wasn't sure that he thought
about it and then tried to fire it in there
and thread the needle picked off by Coatch. First down
and ten sentient motion left to right forms three wide
receivers that way bets are looking now gonna jump it
off to Senti's open makes a man miss up the sideline,

got the first down, dashing across the forties into Ram
territory at the thirty eight move the chains first in
ten and that's what Lincoln sent he could do. He's
got pretty good size as a sophomore. When you look
at his numbers, he goes six, two, one, five.

Yeah, he's kind of that big bulky receiver.

Speaker 4 (22:21):
You know. You can make the catch and then deal
out some punishment, get extra yards that way. But again
Betser extending the play. Rockford getting good pressure that time,
nearly eight rushed four but still had good penetration, and
Betser just getting minces out there and finds his receiver
Senti sitting there in the little zone and pops it
open for twelve.

That's what Betser does so well.

It's not just his arm, but by the legs and
the feet, just doing a great job of extending plays.

forced to go for it. You can't punt in the field,

It's in the middle of the field, so it could

spot where those are probably the most common ones. But

Oh personal file the defense never mind, that'll be half
the distance to the goal after the play, and they're
gonna say the line of scrimmage was the sixteen where
he ended up, so they'll take it down to the

Fink was tackled and that was normal. I mean that
was just a regular football player. So well, clearly it
was something in the middle. But that's a tough penalty
to take because now he gets them automatic first down

Look at the atmosphere with the heel to our right
packed here at Ralphie Myers Memorial Stadium. Hometown crowd would
like to go nuts here because as you mentioned, Buck,

side of the field, going that way, throws it up

knocked away at the goal line, but bets Are just
kind of drifting to his left, floated that one out there.

Yeah, that's not and he'd probably tell you the same thing,
that's not what you want to do there, drifting and
then kind of leaves it behind a Hearn who was
the defender on that plane. He probably had a better
chance of getting it than Collins did, is it floated
away from Collins at the goal line, and I think
Betser would have been better served there to set his
feet and his wet one rip, yeah, Hern to knock
it away. But now they get away with that one

and the second down. But I mean Rockford defense standing
tall when it gets to crunch.

Time, trying to help out this offense that said trouble
last couple of weeks. Thus loss is generating offense. Ten

in Rockford, Caledonia knocking on the door again, trips to
the left, Senny looking right, excuse me, and a penalty
flag comes out near the offensive line. I thought there
might have been a little contact early on senni as

This is gonna be an interesting one because it'll make

that's the right call there. It would have been third

right versus third and eight. I mean what that does
now is it probably takes field goal a little bit

But from their standpoint, the way they throw the football
gets a little more room to operate.

This would be a good This would be the time
for the screen, not from the ten, but from almost
the twenty. That's the spot to do.

the fighting Scott's Special teams just fell asleep there credit Rockford.

They realized that was a live football, stay in play
in a nice return all the way back to the
Caledonia thirty one.

Well, Luca Hearn, very aware and very smart, just runs
the football. I mean, heck, half the Rockford guys didn't
know it was a live ball, right either, because they're
dancing around after they get the block. But the Luca Hearn,
he knew the score, he knew what to do, got
the ball and ran up the sideline and then kind
of what we saw. And the last time that we

(40:47):
had Rockford player, remember that with the blackfield goal, right,
they pick it up, and this time, same thing with
Luca Hearn picks it up and runs down the sideline
and now great field position for the Rams.

Speaker 2 (40:57):
And here's the confusing part. I think why people stopped.
It was blocked, but it went forward, It went past
the line of scrimmage. Is now they pitch it out
to Poot. Poote cuts it up inside the twenty five
and down with a first down to the twenty yard line.
Good blocking in front, but Isaac Poot just runs so swiftly,
doesn't even look like he's moving, and then before you know,
he's got eleven yards like that time, first down in
ten already an eighty nine yard touchdown on the first

play from scrimmage for Rockford offensively on the board, thus
the difference in our game for Poot. He'll stay in
the backfield to the left of Braydon Daniels. It's been
their best play so far tonight. Two wide receivers right,
one left, gift to Poot on the delay. Picks his
way down inside the fifteen, still on his feet, he's
a big, strong back as well, fights his way down
to the twelve yard line, and just like that book,

backing his way with that big offensive line and downside

And they talked about to us in the preseason, the
strength of this football team is this offensive line. They're
all gonna be playing college football eventually somewhere when they're done.

Left tackle, Gage Max In the left guard. Then you've
got Aiden Rivers the center. He's the small one, he's
the little brother of the group. Then Dawson the plant

and ticking left to go Rockford trying to add to

that struggled offensively the last two weeks with losses to

Hudsonville and Jennison back to back, Jennison spoiling their homecoming
for the Rams last week at Kyleson Munger Stadium. They've
gone back to their offensive line in the trenches, so big,
so talented and running the football with number thirty four.

the first play from scrimmage for the Rams. They went

eighty nine yards and then you talk about his second
touchdown buck Gino to give them a thirteen to zing
lead before Caledonia got that one right before the half.

Poot, and we talked at the very opening Brett, we
said they got to find an identity. Well, giving Isaac
Poot the football and letting him run for over one
hundred and fifty yards seems like a good identity. Yeah,
and it worked to their advantage. But I also think defensively,
you know, we're gonna talk about Poot's second touchdown around
the one yard score, but I mean defensively, if you

could if you told Brent Cummings, Hey, you're gonna turn
the ball over three times, Cal's gonna have the ball
in the red zone four times, and you're gonna be
up by a score at the end of halftime. I
can't tell you the look he would have given us
if we would have told him that, but it probably
wouldn't have been good. But they've just found a way.
And I think that's the really encouraging for Rockford. Is
Isaac Poot capping a second scoring drive. Now, Luca Hearns

helped set that up with the block field goal return,
gave him a short field, But you look like Rockford
kind of looks like Rockford today. The turnovers aren't good,
but they look like they're a little bit more engaged.
They look like they're they're just in a different spot offensively.

And let me take the counterpoint of that.

Derek Pennington right now is saying, Okay, my defense graded
three turnovers. We had a ton of opportunities in the
red zone. Yes we did not cash in, but hey,
this is still a one score game. And if we
can figure out how to try to neutralize Isaac Boot
a little bit and force Brayden Daniels to throw to
beat us.

We're in a good position. That's what Caledonia wants.

That's what they would like. It's gonna be a tough
sled though. Now we talk about injuries. Brayln Ray got
hurt early in the first half. He comes back, but
then Jackson Olin in the first quarter gets rolled up on.
He's come out in the second half. He's got his
pads on, but he's got crutches, so that's illegal. He
can't go out there with crutches. So he's dressed, but

he's not going to play. Aaron Collins has been probably
the best offensive player for Caledonia in the first half,
and he's kind of limping around.

he's kind of moving around gingerly. And so if you're Caledonia,
you kind of find a way. Lincoln sent he's done
a really good job as a second receiver. Get him involved,
maybe find somebody else, maybe, you know, Reied Bulgler has
been kind of bing banged up because he hasn't been
in on all the offensive series. So they're just kind

of trying to find a way to piece this together
because these two football teams. You can tell Brad this,
especially the second half. Now, this is a huge, huge
result for both teams because Caledonia getting banged up, Rockford
trying to get their momentum back after two straight losses.

of kids up front that can really maul. And then
you got Wes Katholic, who, you know, we didn't really
know what to expect out of them after this season
or coming up from last season, losing a lot of
players from that team, and boy, you know, they kind
of started rough. They played that team down in Cincinnati
Cincinnia Elder. Cincinnati Elder lost the close one, but I
think they really opened some eyes when they were.

Able to bully Coopersville the way they did.

Cooper's Ville not a bad team at all, but Wes
Catholic just dispatched them with relative ease. And coming into tonight,
you kind of felt this was going to be the

going at it first time that they've played each other
