Speaker 1 (00:02):
Sunday ninety nine point one Houston's Best Variety of the
eighties nineties. And today I'm Dana with producer Anthony and
here are the three things you need to know to
get your Wednesday, July thirtieth started. So the hottest suburbs?
Where are the transplants flocking to Waller and Brookshire? According
to the Houston Association of Realtors their Hottest Communities in
Houston report, Waller the best overall one hundred and fifteen

(00:26):
percent jump in home sales over this time last year,
average home price three hundred and eighteen thousand dollars. And
did you see twelve year old Claire, a competitive wake surfer,
hanging in the Colorado River. She's all over TikTok. There's
been like over four hundred thousand views. She's so cute.
She's smiling as she's waiting between practice sets behind her,

(00:48):
and she turns to see an alligator approaching, goes back
to the camera smiling. She isn't even disturbed at all,
she said, Now, if that had been a snake, she'd
be freaking out. For alligators part the course. Anyway, She
got out, continued her practice sets, and then they just
didn't go back to that air man. Unbelievable and this
dangerous heat yep, today could be the day we hit

(01:11):
one hundred degrees. We do have an ozone alert as well,
poor weather quality or air quality later on this afternoon
between three and seven, just stay indoors and we could
start seeing some rain. Friday forty percent chance. On Saturday
a sixty percent chance with a highs in the low nineties.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
So much welcome.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
Cooler weather today though, could be one hundred right now,
it's eighty two in Uptown and Europe. To date on
Sunny Sunday, ninety nine point one. Houston's Best Variety of
the eighties nineties and today I'm Dana with producer Anthony,
and I promise you back to school shopping will be
so much fun and affordable because we have got Sam Lopez,

(01:54):
who is the co owner of the Houston Clothing Swap,
and you've got this big adventure coming up early next month.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Can you tell us about it? Sam?

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Course, So, the Houston Clothing Swap is typically for adults,
and this time around we really wanted to do something
for the children and back to school season is a
perfect time for it. So essentially you can bring as
many clothes that your children have, things that they've outgrown,
things that they just no longer wear. They have their
personal style to their growing humans. You bring it to

(02:27):
the swap and you can exchange it for clothing that
does resonate with them, things that bring them joy, and
things that set them up for school so that they
can be ready to go.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Okay, first of all, let's back up a little bit
and tell us about the origins of this incredible concept.
Because I'm a thrift store girl, I love Goodwill Houston,
so tell us about your Houston Clothing Swap.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
So the Houston Clothing Swap began about a year ago
actually with two of my lovely friends. I call them
my platonic soulmates, Diana and Raquel. They are incredible humans
and we all just equally this passion for sustainability and
the circulation of clothes. There are so many clothes that
already exist on the planet. It's really really scary to see.

(03:09):
The landfills are just so filled with clothing. And we
wanted to bring purpose to the things that we see
as trash and give them a new life. And that
is our way of creating conscious consumerism in Houston and beyond,
and it's just something that has exploded far beyond what
we even anticipated. The need for this sort of.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Thing is so huge. Touched a nerve. I mean, it's
so trending now.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
People love vintage clothing and just the joy of finding
that perfect shirt or pair of pants or vintage boots,
whatever it is.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
Where are you located?

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Typically in the Heights Mantras area. We don't have a
forever home, okay us because we are always shop type
in a way. Yes, we're always outgrowing our spaces.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Okay. So currently we're.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
At Sawyer Yards on Silver Street and it's it's a warehouse.
It's got twenty thousand square feet, so we're growing. So
that will be our location for the children's swap and
then our fall swap.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
As well for adults.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
Okay, So I love the adults, but moms, the kids.
I know my daughter in laws will be all over this.
So you bring your kids clothes in, gently washed, gently used.
Obviously you want to have make sure that you're taking
care in what you're providing for other families, and then
the kids can go and look and pick out what
they like, and you just take what you like and

(04:31):
put it in another bag and leave exactly.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
And it's all ten dollars.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Yeah, ten dollars plus taxes and fees of course, but yes,
ten dollars just per adult and the children kiddos twelve
and under are free. So you can bring as many
bags as you want and fill up as many bags
as you want and leave with a full wardrobe. Essentially.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
That is incredible. All right, when is this shopping going
to happen?

Speaker 3 (04:55):
So it's on Sunday, August third, from twelve to six pm.
There are times, so you can choose which time best
serves you and just take as many things as you
would like and that will set you up for school.

Speaker 1 (05:08):
That's amazing. And what about social media? Where can we
kind of learn more about it?

Speaker 3 (05:12):
Yes, we are very present on social media. We are
the Houston Clothing Swap on Instagram and TikTok. We're also
on Facebook and our nonprofit Conscious Consumer Collective is also
on Instagram and that's what we were able to form
through doing swaps like this, so we can sustain this
long term. You can get your tickets at cccswaps dot com.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
Coolest job ever, Sam, Thank you so much for sharing
with you. So I think it's going to be so fun.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
I'm so excited. Thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
Tell me something good. Brought to us by our friends
at Goodwill Houston.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
We know you.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Teachers are getting those classrooms all ready for back to school,
and we wanted to highlight our teacher of the day
for Wednesday. Heather's Sportsman. She teaches at Williridge High School.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Dedicated.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
Our teachers spent fourteen year educating K through twelve students,
and you can help out your favorite teacher.

really cool. Literally.

Speaker 4 (06:32):
A new initiative launch last month in Galveson is offering
relief from the sweltering summer heat to some of the
island's most vulnerable residents at no cost. It's called Project Batcat.
It's a pilot program led by the nonprofit Build Galveston.
It replaces broken or missing window ac units for families,
including low income, seniors, and people with disabilities. It's named
in honor of the late Leon Phillips, a local community

(06:52):
activist who once ran a business called FatCat. Before his passing.
He shared this idea for the for the program with
Vision Galveson executive director Christine Ryan, inspiring the effort to
bring it to life. Now, the program officially launched jun eleventh,
installed twenty eight units so far across seventeen homes. Aimy
reach up to thirty eight households in this round and
that application process is simple. Residents can apply online or

(07:14):
receive paper applications hand delivered. They say the need is great.
More than sixty applicants have already sent in paperwork. So
it's a program helping cover those at risk on the island.
And if you know someone who could benefit once again,
it's called Project Beckhat.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
That is so cool and I love this, Anthony.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
This is made for you people who love chicken, spicy chicken.

Speaker 2 (07:34):

Speaker 1 (07:35):

And Today Dan in the Morning and producer Anthony, And
we're talking about regrets going to college. Twenty five percent

(08:38):
of gen Zers say they regret going to college. Maybe
they don't have a job that they were hoping to
get with their degree saddled with debt from student loans.
And we're asking you your experience with college. It is
the time people going back to school. We've got Dennis
calling in from Conrad. Now, you're a high school math teacher,
so you went to college. Do you have regrets? Not

(09:01):
at all. But I used to teach at Loan Star
College and.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
I've seen plenty of kids in the remedial math class
and they're not there because.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
They want to be there.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
They're there because their parents put them there, and they
just don't go to class very much.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
And that's what I'm saying. Oh wow, ye you as
a high school teacher, you have quite an influence over
the kids. What advice do you give to the kids
so they don't make such a soul crushing decision where
they've got to pay all these loans back?

Speaker 2 (09:31):
What would you say to kids today.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
If they want to go to college, they have a
good plan and they know what they want to do
in life.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
Go, you know, don't go just to have fun and
party and do whatever, because that's not a plan at all.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
That's not a plan at all. It's not wise words. Dennis.
I love that. Hey, what's your schedule for back to school?
When do you go back?

Speaker 1 (09:52):
I'm already back. We had in school yesterday.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Wait, oh wow, Conor's already back in school, Aldine, I
sdd oh okay, all my goodness.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
Well, I hope you have an excellent year. And you
know we are doing this incredible thank a Teacher event
where we are giving away five thousand dollars for classroom supplies.
I bet you could certainly use that, couldn't you? Definitely? Definitely? Well, Dennis,
hopefully you'll be nominated. We are nominating teachers all over Houston.
You can go to iHeartRadio dot com slash teachers and

(10:26):
who knows, maybe you'll win that five thousand dollars.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
Dennis. We appreciate all you do for the students.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
Let's head over to Katie and speak with a nurse. Lindsey,
do you regret going to college?

Speaker 1 (10:37):
I know you probably had to go to college for nursing,
right I did. Yes, I'm in college for a third
and final time now getting a doctorate degree.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
WHOA so incredible. What's your thinking like?

Speaker 1 (10:48):
Is this just something that comes natural to you or
are you just going, you know what, I've got to
get all these certifications so I can be the best
nurse possible.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
What's your thinking?

Speaker 1 (10:58):
Yeah, I'm always trying to improve myself, of but I've
always had an idea that I wanted to get a
terminal degree in nursing.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
That the highest degree you can get and I love school.
Ah that wow? How do you like?

Speaker 1 (11:09):
What what gave you this love for school? Was it
something that your parents instilled in you? Or is it
just something that you just love?

Speaker 4 (11:16):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
I guess it's just an age.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
I think I just grew up loving school.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
Almost done, that's amable, Like when are you done?

Speaker 2 (11:25):
When's the final day? End of October? So close? The
best of luck and let us be a part of
your journey. Okay, thank you so much, Bye bye, thanks
