Sunday ninety nine point one Houston's Best Variety of the
eighties nineties, and today I'm Dana with producer Anthony, and
here are the three things you need to know to
get your Tuesday, July twenty ninth started Houston traffic. It's
gotten worse. Yes, I know it's unbelievable, but it's true.
According to Consumer Affairs, our average commute time has stayed
(00:22):
pretty consistent twenty nine point eight minutes. However, the average
congestion time has grown by twenty seven percent from last year.
You're now the seventh worst among major US cities for
our traffic. So what do you do? You can fly,
you go to Hobby. It's getting more Houston. In terms
(00:42):
of restaurants, Killin's Barbecue is now open at Gate forty,
Spindle Tap now open at Gate twenty nine, and more
favorites are on the way Velvet Taco, the Rustic Common Bond,
Fat Cat Creamery.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
And Landry Seafood. Let's go a great destination, right, I
like Hobby Airport.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
And then while Hobby's go in Houston, Shipley's Donuts going California. Yeah,
it's been sold to a California equity firm founded in
nineteen thirty six. Shipley's Donuts the very first place my
husband took me to.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
And that's all right. I remember, Yes, we've got to
get a glazed donut. I thought, why because it's Shipley
you learned, that's right.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
So they are committed to their franchises with the world's
greatest donuts, but now they just want to make them
available to more communities across America. Your weather today could
be record breaking heat. We could go up to one
hundred official high ninety eight. We've got the ozone alert
today as well, so air quality not that great. We
will right now. We're at eighty in Uptown and Europe
(01:44):
to date, I'm sunny. Tell me something good brought to
us by our friends at Goodwill Houston.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Well.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Two brothers in Denver Harbor are on a mission. They're
taking on the fifty yard challenge, one yard at a time.
They are determined to do kind things for their neighbors.
So what they're doing is their mowing lawns in their
Denver Harbor neighborhood for single parents, for the elderly, for disabled,
(02:13):
one yard at a time. When Dad gets home from work,
they load up the truck with all of their supplies
and go out and start mowing and edging people's yards.
Once they hit the fifty yard challenge, you know what happens, Anthony,
They get free lawnmowing equipment so they can start their
own business.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Wow. That great.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
I love it doing kind things for your neighbors. Producer
Anthony Dane.
Speaker 2 (02:34):

Speaker 3 (02:35):
There's a man out in West Harris County that went
through a financial nightmare with an unexpected blessing. Sampson Ipcho
He lost more than six thousand dollars in an elaborate
phone scam. He said he had all these calls that
appeared to be from his credit union. It was devastating
for him. But Sampson is also part of a workout
group that's become his family recently. Well, when Sampson lost
his money, he stopped attending the group.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
He says.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
What happened next, though, restored his faith in people. His
fitness family quiet organized a fundraiser. Every member chipped in
what they could, and in just a few days, they
presented Sampson with more than seven thousand dollars back.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
He says he felt just pure joy.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
He hopes others can learn from his experience of never
sharing info over the phone, but also still have the
courage to let others in. They could lift you up
in your time of need.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
And speaking of lifting us up in our time of need,
doesn't that personify.
Speaker 2 (03:22):

that we bring on road trips, which is absolutely genius
because it takes the kids forever to eat it beef jerky.
I you know, you can't get too hot, can't get
too cold. It flavorful, it fills you up. But the
key is it keeps the kids engaged for a long
time because it's hard to eat.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Yeah, you get that's gonna slow you down for a
little bit, at.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
Least exactly no mess either. So it's got us thinking
about road trips and I am. I love taking road trips.
Just get in the car, throw everything in that you need.
You don't have to worry about airport security and all
that stuff. And I'll never forget we took a road trip.
All my kids played hockey in Michigan, so Bobby started
(04:59):
the trend. My o oldest and one summer, we're going
to go to Michigan. I said, we are driving to Michigan.
Everybody in the car. I always loved doing exercises with
my kids, So the day before we went to the
high school, we were running bleachers because Bobby was trying
out for a hockey team. There running the bleachers, Anthony.
I got bitten by wasps all over my face. Ooh
(05:22):

benadrill because it was going to slow me down. I

getting up at three am and we're going. I could
see or half the trip. We arrived at our first week.

How did you ever? Where we stayed the first night?
Would you do this? I don't know. I was just
a German.
Speaker 1 (05:51):

he was like, mom, what's wrong with are you? Okay?
We need to go somewhere.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
So we arrived. I didn't look the best when we
got there. I was exhausted. It's not yea, eyes weren't
puffy from being tired. It was because I had washed.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
You'd been dumb. But anyway, Hey, the most fun. But
it was just so bizarre.
