(00:02):
Hey, folks, you're listening tothe Roy West Show here on Newstalk five
sixty k L the folks, Ialways have the best guest, and today
certainly no exception to that hometown heroNFL football player p J. Locke.
Welcome to the show. I appreciateyou for having me. Regulations are win
(00:23):
an election? Well, thank you, thank you very much. And you
know, I want to thank youbecause you know, you grew up here.
You graduated from Central Beaumont Central intwo thoy fifteen. Then you went
on to UT and played football there, and then you after poably graduation,
you went in the NFL and uh, and you're with the Denver Broncos,
(00:44):
and that is super cool. Idon't know how many players we have from
Beaumont and NFL currently, but itis because I know, I know your
family still lives here and you're givenback to the community. Because that's one
of the things that to get youon the show is you got a big
football camp coming up. Of course, of course, man, my uh.
(01:06):
First of all, men, Ifeel like Beaumont we had in our
direction. I know a while backthen it's colleging us to Football Capital.
I think we I mean we havea good amount of guys in NFL.
What's say about when I say goodamoundel to say about five or six and
then there's some some guys's upcoming. But as far as man, yeah,
trying to do this camp every year. My parents always told me, Man,
when I make it to the top, you know, don't pull the
ladder up. So you know,I got the ladder still down and just
(01:29):
trying to help people up and uh, you know, I enjoy doing this
camp and giving back, and youknow, these campers are going to experience
from NFL talent and all different coaches, coaches that coach me. I got
coaches that coach me in high schoolthat's coming back down. So it's uh,
you know, get the best ofboth worlds and that. But I
think I'm just trying to instill likethat hope back in kids right well,
(01:52):
you know, and one of thethings here is certainly growing up today is
it's certainly hard and uh and havingenough things to occupy them. And I
mean how I mean you do somethingthat's really unique besides having the football camp
it's free, hm, I mean, of course, I mean that's pretty
end of the day. I mean, yeah, it's definitely unusual sometimes,
(02:16):
but you know, I you know, I don't knock people that, you
know, make kids pay a night, but you know, I just wanted
to. I'm able to provide afree camp, and so that's what I
wanted to do. Well, I'mwe're gonna talk about this a couple of
times, but if people are watchingour video too, it's on the screen
bamfam dot org. Bamfam dot org. You can go there in Rechter.
(02:39):
And uh it's third through twelfth gradefor June seventeenth, which is a Saturday
from nine to noon. And it'sout at the bisD Memorial Stadium, correct,
correct, So this is and andyou've got other players out there.
And so first of all, I'mthinking this will be a huge draw for
(03:00):
one reason alone. They get tosee NFL players. And you know,
I know y'all y'all still practice,y'all see one another all the time,
but for the rest of us,we don't get to run into NFL players
on TV. So uh, youknow, I'm just I know that kids
are going to be super excited, and this isn't your first year to do
it here, not at all,not at all, man, I think
(03:21):
it's to me, I think it'sall about being touchable, being reachable.
You know. I feel like,uh, you know, kids to see
us on TV and think like we'relike just super invincible, but they forget
like we are human beings too.You know. We we sat in those
same spot to day, sat inand you know, we put the work
in and trust to God and youknow how we hear the NFL. So
(03:43):
I think it's all about like Isaid, just in still in, it's
still in that hope and I'm bringingother NFL talent and then you know,
honestly, it's not all about justjust football, not NFL. I'm I'm
I want to do get to thepoints where we do NBA, we just
do all professional do college athletes andman, just making this huge thing and
you know, just coming back onthis specific date and you know, just
(04:03):
just showing let us of the communitybecause at the end of the day,
you know, we know the communityis going to have our back end.
This is where we grew up.So you know, we always want to
see people succeed and create some typeof pipe, some type of pipeline.
Well, so what can the kidand this this is incredible and you're so
gracious and because it really is abig deal. And and then I know
(04:25):
it also costs your money out ofyour pocket. You're not even talking about
that, but but you get itbecause you realize you're you're impacting these young
people's lives and and you can helpchange a trajectory in life because you know,
oftentimes the decisions we make are certainlyimportant, and when you're younger,
(04:46):
you just don't understand oftentimes how importantthe decisions you're making have. Right,
I just think, um, youknow I had I had like the perfect
guidance when I was younger. Imean even still no like just from my
parents and you know, just justcoaches, the coaches that I had and
people that are just very close tome. I feel like I had guidance
people they said the right things andthey led me in the right direction.
(05:09):
And I know everybody don't get thattype of they don't get that fortunate.
So you know, I want toat least provide those type of opportunities,
you know, when you come tothe camp. You know, I've just
I said, I want to makemyself reachable asking me questions because at the
end of the day, like I'veexperienced a lot. You know, I'm
twenty six years old and I experienceda lot for the most part. But
you know, I'm still growing andthey're going to continue to grow. And
(05:31):
you know, all the wisdom andthe experience that I have, I want
to be able to share that, you know, because I have. Everybody
has a story, and I mostdefinitely have one, and I feel like
within my story you can find sometype of I don't know, some type
of direction, some type of guidance. You know, I might have might
have went through the same situation you'vebeen you've been going through or going through
(05:54):
the current moment, and I cangive you some type of pointness to that.
And I feel like you can. With the NFL talent we're going to
have there, and also you know, just just the college players that we're
gonna have there, I feel likeyou can you can pick someone's brain.
You can know it's just always roomfor improvement, always always rung for the
girl. Well, as you pointout, that's it's more than just about
(06:14):
football, but certainly football is funand man, you know, when you
started at UT, I'm sure thiswas a dream, but you know,
I don't know statistically what the oddsare, but I know they're they're not
great. So you know, yeah, as we were talking before, you
had an alternate plan when you startedbecause you didn't know how it was going
to go. Huh. Yeah.Like I said, I was always big
(06:35):
on graduating, and I always wantsto graduate from college. And I mean
one of my goals is to dophysical therapy. And I could still go
back to school. I have theundergrad for it. I can still go
back to school and finish up.But like I said, my football career
is going pretty well for me rightnow. And that's a lie. I
don't know. I just always it'salways good to have a plan. B.
(06:56):
I always good to have a plan. B. So well, and
it sounds like you've had plenty ofplans and you know how to follow through
on plans. You know. Onething I've heard about professional athletes, and
we didn't talk about this before, but you know, to become a professional
athlete usually you know, obviously theyhave undergraduate degrees, but most people tell
me it's equivalent to getting a mastersin college because the education. You know,
(07:19):
you obviously very physically talented. ButI understand that there's a lot to
learn in the NFL, and youknow in terms of plays and everything else,
right right, No, it definitelyis, because I mean the game
of football is ninety percent mental, you know, whether that's that's confidence and
understanding schemes, understanding what the offensetrying to do to you. From my
(07:41):
standpoint at least, and then itjust allows you to kind of like you
still there, just allows not useso much of like the physical aspect of
it, because I mean we have, for example, we have a thirty
five year old safety that's on ourteam right now and it's still super productive.
(08:03):
It's because he's seen so much ofthe game. You know, he
knows that the offense is trying todo to him. So man, he's
might he might not have the samespeed that he did when he was younger,
but he's always in the right positionbecause you know, everything is just
mental reps. You know, it'slike muscle memory. So that's that's the
biggest thing. And especially for mebecause I when I when I was in
(08:24):
college, I played pretty much nickelback. Now I transitioned to safety in NFL,
so I'm playing a new scheme andsafeties has to be super super smart.
So I got to put people ina positions, I gotta make calls
and these other type of things,so you know, you you have to
have a super good IQ for that. So over the years, I've just
been, you know, piggybacking offthe guys that's starting right now. And
(08:48):
I've learned so much over the years, and I don't know, man,
I feel like a breakout season aboutto happen for me. That is awesome,
and I agree with you. Andwe've got coming up. We're three
minutes out, but I'm up onJune seventeenth, which is a Saturday,
nine am to twelve noon for it'sfree for all kids your football camp out
(09:09):
at bist Memorial Stadium from third gradeto twelfth grade, but they need to
pre register before and that is andthey can find you easily on Facebook.
You've got You've got a fan pagethere that's public, but there's a link
there. It's Bam Bam Fam famdot org. Or go to find him
on social media and there'll be alink there as well, and on my
(09:31):
social media page. I'm gonna besharing the link as well. But we've
got a couple of more minutes here, so so when the kids show up
at nine what's their day gonna belike that pretty much, So the biggest
thing for them, they need tomake sure they sign up. We always
have a lot of walk ups,and it gets like pretty inconvenient when you
(09:52):
have walk ups. You know,I accept walk ups for sure and no
without a doubt, but it's justkind of hard because we try to predetermine
by the you know, the peoplethat register so we can get their camp
gear in. So it's just superimportant for them to sign up so we
won't just have to be shuffling outthere trying to find them a shirt and
whatsoever. But other than that, man, you just pretty much, I'm
pretty sure you just you just signup. When you get to the campsite.
(10:16):
There should be like some type oftable somewhere where you can pick up
your camp gear, and they're they'repretty much just seen you over to like
the bleachers. After that, andyou kind of wait around to registration or
everyone checks in, and then fromthat point on, man, we'll I'll
probably say like a little quick speech, probably give like cam directions and whatsoever.
We'll stretch, go through drills,we'll have like competitions at the end
(10:39):
you win fund prizes, and thenafter that, you know, we'll have
like goodie bags and food to passout, and I'm pretty sure there'd be
like an ice cream truck, snowcombtruck, yoga machine, just like little
fun stuff in there, and youknow that'll be that to conclude today.
Now, the parents, can theystay in the ADM stands and watch?
(11:01):
Yes, yeah, that's that's morethan welcome. Yeah. And so what
about the general public that's just interested, that doesn't have kids, Can they
come out there and watch. Iwill not mind it at all. I'll
not mind it all. This isfor it is for the community. Well,
sweet and I imagine there might bean opportunity for some people to get
pictures with you, hud Well,I know that will be important. Well,
(11:26):
PJ, thank you so much fortaking the time to come on.
I mean, and thank you foryou know, your family, for racing
such an incredible young man that givesback to the community and it's so selfless.
And again we'll we'll continue to promotethis here locally to make sure that
as many kids as possible know aboutit. Thank you so much. I
(11:48):
appreciate you for the opportunity. Yes, sir, we'll talk again soon,
okay, sound good, good afternoonin Southeast Texas. You're listening to the
Roy West Show, and folks,I always have great guests, and I
have with me Jeff O'Malley, whois Lamar University's athletic director. Welcome back
(12:13):
to the show, Jeff. It'sgreat to be here, Roy, Thanks
for having me. Well, Iknow we're wrapping up the spring here,
and but here we are rolling inthe summer. We've got falling up behind
that. And I know that you'realways you're always looking ahead too, because
there's always stadium improvements and everything elsehappening. And tell me what's happening out
(12:33):
of Lamar. Yeah, you're rightthere. You know, Summer is coming
up on us pretty quick here, and we're trying to do a lot of
things to get ready for the fall. You know, we're really one of
the biggest project we have going onnow is the new video board that's going
into Provo Sumpree Stadium and the newsound system. So work is beginning on
(12:54):
that. They're going to start bringingdown the old board here in a couple
of weeks and the new one isgoing to go up in the sound system
is going in. We've had workersaround uh you know around here for a
couple of weeks trying to get everythingcorrect on that. But it's gonna be
that's gonna have a huge impact forus. And uh, you know,
(13:16):
knock on what if everything goes well, it'll be up and up and ready
to fire up here in August thirtyfirst for the for the Idaho game.
That is awesome and I imagine thoseare obviously big ticket items and and as
technology continues to change and improve,I know, going to football stadiums around
(13:37):
the country, you know, obviouslythat can sometimes be an issue being able
to hear they're being dead spots inthe stadium. Yeah. Usually the useful
life on videoboarding sound systems is rightaround eight years if you can get you
know, if you can get eightto ten years out of them, um,
you're you're really doing well. Theequipment that we have is is uh,
(13:58):
you know, was in place forthirteen football seasons, so we've outlived
its useful life. And you know, last year we had to rent sound
h to come in here to promossome free to to make up for the
U for what we had. Itwas only operating at about thirty percent,
so we had to make up forthat. So we're really looking forward to
this. It's going to have ahuge impact UM on our on our program,
(14:20):
on our end game experience for ourfans UM. And it's it's really
going to show what's going on.You know, it's about we're spending about
two million dollars on it, soit's a great, big investment, um
you know, and it just shows, you know, the commitment that this
university has for this athletic program. And then doctor Taylor's doing a great job
(14:41):
and uh you know and making surethat that you know, we get what
we need in order to compete atthe highest level you know, in the
Southland Conference. But you know, but this project's all going to be funded
through private funds, um, youknow, which is great as well.
So it's not going to take anythingaway from the universe sea side that is
awesome and I know that uh LamarAthletics does a tremendous job. In football
(15:07):
has become an experience, you know, I mean the game game days,
you know, it's I love takingthe grand kids out there because there's something
for everybody as well. It's it'svery uh there's a lot to stimulate you.
There's always great football too, butthere is so much more, you
know. I guess that's just thetimes that we live in now. Yeah,
(15:30):
yeah, that's really what we wantis to build a game day experience
like all around the stadium, rightand then bring the party inside once the
game begins. But we want toreally try to enhance our tailgating experience.
You know, I was told, you know here when we started up football
again back in twenty ten, tailgatingwas was through the roof. And we
want to get back to that. You know, we have to, We
(15:52):
have to and we will put abetter product on the field, um,
you know, to excite the fansto come back. But you know,
the the university community and the Bomacommunity is really doing its part to increase
what's going on outside the stadium. We had a great um that the Hispanic
students really put on a great tailgateover across the across MLK and the Plumber
(16:15):
the Plumber Field last year and thatreally attracted a lot of people, um,
and you know, looking forward forthem to build upon that this year
as well. And you know,we need to do a better job out
in the parking lots and we willand we'll get that thing rolling and so
people can enjoy a full day outhere. Well, I'm excited and I'm
(16:37):
excited to be a part of it. And I do remember when football came
back and the tailgating was it wasfull out there, right, uh,
and I expect to see it outthere like that again. Now. Oftentimes
in summertime, there's there's some programsthat the coaches put on for local student
athletes and are want to be studentathletes here in the community. You'll have
(17:02):
any of those going on. Yeah, we we have a whole list of
camps that are going to be goingon this summer. So there's football camps,
there's basketball camps, um, youknow, softball and soccer camps as
well, and uh, you know, I think volleyball is going to try
and put some camps onto so uh. You know, anytime we can get
young people on this campus, itreally enhances not not only are athletic programs,
(17:26):
but the university in general. Right. So, you know, if
we can get some people on campusand they have a great experience, and
they may end up being students herebecause you know, because of the great
experiences that they had, not justnot just student athletes, but students in
general. Right, so we wewant to show off our facilities, you
know, and provide opportunities for theseyou know, these campers and a bolt
(17:48):
my community come on out and uh, you know, experience our great coaching
staffs and our great facilities. Well, and I just googled while we're talking
here, Lamar University or camps, and that immediately came up. And there
is a whole host of camps.I mean, art and design, band,
baseball, baseball, baseball, basketball, women's basketball, choir, computer
(18:15):
science. So it's softball, football. So there it certainly, and that's
just one page. There's more.Yeah, so folks, if you're looking
for summer camp ideas too, justgo to Lamar University Summer Camps and you're
gonna you're gonna find the whole listright there, and you can register on
that page. It gives you allthe pertinent information, the dates of the
(18:37):
camps, the minimum and maximum ageand uh and also how you register.
So h so that's awesome. Andnow, so what else exciting is happening
with athletic program? We got aboutthree more minutes because I know that,
uh, you know, Lamar isis exploding out there the campus. You
(18:59):
know, when people get on campusand I you know, when I'm going
to advance, people that hadn't beenon there in a while are saying,
wow, man, this is thislooks great. Yeah, yeah, we're
really you know, we we wonthe Southern Conference Women's All Sports Trophy for
the first time ever, right,We just got that this week, and
that was great news. You know, our women's soccer program had a great
(19:22):
year. Our women's track program wonthe conference championships, finished second, and
indoor finished second. Cross country youknow, obviously women's basketball had a great
year, and softball, you know, had a great year as well.
So our women's sports programs really performedwell this year and for the first time
ever, you know, we wonthis trophy, which was great. And
(19:44):
there are a lot of great improvementsgoing on on campus. You know,
we talked about what we have goingon in a football stadium and we're gonna
we're making improvements in the Montage Centeras well. So there's gonna be new
lighting, um that's going to goin the end of June, and the
floor is coming up up. We'reputting in a new basketball playing surface and
that's going to be going on inJuly as well. So you know,
(20:07):
we're really making some changes trying toenhance not only our fan experience, but
our student athlete experience as well.Well. It sounds like y'all are staying
awfully busy with everything, with everythingthat's happening, and this is a good
time too for people to be thinkingabout season tickets for football as well.
(20:27):
Yeah, football season tickets are onyou know, you can visit our website
Lamar Cardinals dot com and go onthere and purchase your season tickets. So
in our we have a great homefootball schedule this year. We're really looking
forward to some excitement that's going on. That home opener in August thirty first
with Idaho is going to be agreat evening. It's a Thursday night,
(20:48):
right before Labor Day weekend, youknow, which is a very attractive time
not only first time to come tothe games, but also for the community
as well, So you can comeon out and you know, support the
Cardinals before you head off for along Labor Day weekend. Well, and
then also don't forget about basketball seasontickets. We've got baseball, We've got
(21:11):
them all and folks, you know, we've got to give where we live.
We've got to be involved, andI know I'm seeing so many of
the athletes out in the community,so as the community, we need to
continue to support Lamar University. Andit's always game day experiences. Whatever games
you go to, the athletes arealways appreciative and it's such a great environment.
(21:33):
I just want to thank you,Jeff for all that you're doing there,
and I know that I'm looking forwardto the twenty three twenty four season.
Thanks Roy, I really appreciate youhaving me and letting us promote the
great things we have going on herein the athletic department. All right,
Jeff, we'll talk soon. ThanksRoy. Take care. You're listening to
(22:03):
the Roy West Show here on NewsTalk five sixty k l V. I
and I have with me Mike Connor, who is the executive director of the
Dream Center of Southeast Texas. Welcomeback to the show, Mike. Thank
you, Roy. It's always apleasure to be on your show. Yes,
sir, well, thank you.I know y'all got a lot going
(22:23):
on always, and here we areat the end of May, running into
summer months, vacationing months, andI'm sure that presents even more challenges for
y'all. Yes, sir, itdoes. Typically we see two slumps during
the year, one in January rightafter Christmas, and then another one has
(22:44):
the right after Memorial Day when peoplestart taking vacations and charities in general tend
to be forgotten during that time becauseeverybody's focused on their travel plans and we
understand that, but we always loveto be able to make special appeals and
let people know what's going on sothat in case they do have some discretionary
money, they're able to send itour way. Well, and let's remind
(23:07):
people, and most people that havebeen here pretty length of time are certainly
familiar with the Dream Center of SoutheastTexas, but the services that y'all provide,
Yes, sir. We are afive oh one C three charity based
at the old TyC facility on Highwaysixty nine fifty acres. We have an
approximately two hundred thousand square feet inthe process of revitalizing those so they can
(23:33):
be used as we get the fundsavailable for that, and we offer really
mainly a couple of things are claimedto fame. Number one our food pantry
clothing pantry, where about four timesa month we have people come in and
drive through and we're just seeing thatgetting bigger and bigger and bigger, and
so we are in desperate need ofken goods to be able to help offset
(23:56):
that. And then also our SuccessProgram, which is our faith based try
covery program that we have here onsite. We have seen our numbers nearly
double in this whole process. Ithink about a year and a half ago,
we were sitting right at around twentytwenty five people here on campus,
and now we're nearly forty people oncampus. And every time we had a
(24:18):
new person, it's about five hundreddollars per month that we have to pay.
We don't charge anything for the program. It's completely free, but especially
with summer coming up and utility billsgoing up, and we just really want
to make sure that people think aboutus and realize that, you know,
we're here doing a good work andwe're needed in the community, and we'd
(24:40):
just like to see some support wheneverwherever possible. Well, and for those
that are watching this on social media, y'all's website's really easy. It's dream
Center setx dot org. Dream Centersetx dot org. And do you have
a way to give online or isthe information just available there? Yes,
(25:03):
sir. Now on Facebook and onlinethere are donate buttons there where you can
give to us, and we definitelyappreciate anyone that's able to do that.
We also are in the process ofwhat we call a campaign called Miracle May
for the month of May and justtalking about miracles and taking per requests and
really just highlighting some of those. And this week is Miracles of Provision.
(25:26):
And my wife has posted links onthere for our Amazon, our Sam's and
Walmart accounts to where people want tobuy something and just have it shipped here
to us. That way they don'teven have to get out and do anything
and they can shop online and justuse our list and send it to the
Dream Center. Well, and I'mgoing to share that on my social media
(25:51):
page as well, because obviously, you know, we need to give where
we live and support local and y'alldo it significant ministries across the board.
And again we all know that ifwe want a better community, we've got
to be a better community. Howall of this is successful as if the
(26:12):
community is involved and through buy in. So for those that are out there
that are in different organizations or churches, this is also something that you know
they need to check out and getmore information about because organizations, whether or
any churches. Yeah, a lotof them partner with you, correct,
(26:33):
yes, sir, Yeah. Ourgoal and we're actively recruiting right now.
Our goal is to get a hundredchurches, hundred businesses giving just one hundred
dollars a month so that we canyou know, pay our utility bills that
be ten thousand dollars that would coverour overhead, and then the rest of
our donations will be going strictly towardsprogram costs and being able to take people
(26:53):
in. I absolutely hate turning peopleaway. And we're getting full. I
mean, we are getting full, and we have a men's program and a
women's program and we're doing the bestwe can, but we definitely could use
the help, especially during the summerslump. Well, and that there in
(27:14):
lies the problem being successful at yourministries is they get they get bigger,
which is a great problem to have, but then you have to continue to
be able to fund them. Anduh, and I'm sure it's always you
know, playing catch up and havingto expand that base, but certainly the
people's lives that are a part ofDream Center, you know, lives are
(27:36):
being changed it's making a big impactin the community, and so this is
important work. Yes, sir,my wife, I see, my wife
has just joined us, and I'lldefer list. She could, she could
talk a little bit more about thelist. Okay, sorry, I'm having
technical difficulties, so no worries atall. Okay, So you want me
(27:56):
to talk about. Are some wecall we're calling it Summer of Supply sos
so things that will help us getthrough the summer. We do have an
Amazon list and also a Walmart list. A lot of it has to do
with things like toilet paper. Havetoilet papers gold around here, so toilet
papers a big need. We havethings that we also need UM like hygiene
(28:18):
items for men and women. Wehave a bunch of things we need for
our kitchen like um, sugar, flour, staple, basic things that we
can actually cook in our cafeteria becausewe have we feed about there's about forty
forty residents here on campus that theyget three meals a day in our cafeteria,
(28:38):
so you know, oil, flour, all that kind of stuff.
Basic cooking supplies we would need tobe able to feed everyone here on campus.
So that's kind of in that shelland those links are you've already shared
those on social media. We willbe sharing that probably today, so there
(28:59):
will be again an Amazon lists andum Walmart list. The neat thing about
that is you can go out there, pick and choose and it goes directly
to us and nobody hasn't go pickit up, they deliver UM. It's
just really simple as just clicking andchoosing what you want UM to donate to
us and it comes to us ourfront front steps. So it's really easy.
(29:22):
Well, that's awesome and and andfolks, you know, let's uh,
I'll be sharing that as well onmy social media page. But y'all
have dream Center set X on Facebookas well as well as the dream Center
setx dot org where people can continuecontinue to get information about the ministries and
obviously the ministry y'all provide or vitalto Southeast Texas. You're centrally located,
(29:49):
and uh, you know, weas a community need to continue to support
and especially in these like you say, just the cost to doing business goes
up in the summertime just because theutility cost increasing, and especially when you
have several buildings, So this isan important time and oftentimes when people may
(30:11):
be cutting back on their spending.Yes, sir, we appreciate the public.
I mean, we get multiple churches, we've got some businesses, and
we've got individuals that are supporting us, and we say thank you. We
definitely appreciate that. And we arejust in a situation where, you know,
I go out in my meet andI share the vision of the Dream
(30:33):
Center all the time, and Ihear the comment, well, we definitely
need you here, We definitely needyou here, We definitely need you here,
and so we're just like, well, if you need us, and
you please help us. So it'slike that, that's just kind of where
we're at at this point because wewant to continue to be here. We
want to be here for next month, next year, five years, ten
years down the road to be ableto make a difference here in Southeast Texas
(30:56):
well. And you are making adifference, and we need as a community
to show up. And part ofthat is like today, getting the word
out. But then also for thosethat are hearing the word today, they
need to go back to their churches, they need to go back to their
organizations that they are a part ofas well and share this and they can
also reach out to y'all. Wegot about forty five seconds left. But
(31:19):
what's the contact number because I knowy'all will speak to groups and everything else.
Yes, yeah, so we haveIf anyone wants to volunteer or even
bring a group out here to doa serve day, they can contact us.
Our main number is four O ninetwo three four five two five five,
or they can send an email tous at info at dream Center setx
dot org, or they can alwaysgo on our website. But yeah,
(31:41):
we have volunteer opportunities. If peoplewant to come out. We give out
tours and so they can kind ofget the vision, catch the vision of
the Dream Center, and we're availableto go share it at different venues and
events and things like that as wellto share a mouth the Dream Center.
Well, thank y'all both so much. Mamma and Mike Connor Dream Center of
Southeast Texas. We'll be talking again. We are back with the Roy West
(32:13):
Show here on News Talk five sixtyk l V and I have with me
Norma Sampson with the Gift of Life. She's the executive director. It is
always a pleasure to have you onthe show. Norma. Thank you for
coming back on Thank you, Roy. We always appreciate you for helping us
spread our message of our free healthcareservices. So thanks for this opportunity absolutely,
(32:36):
and y'all are y'all always have somethinggoing on, and this is this
is the week. This is thetime that y'all do the twenty twenty three
minced health and prostate cancer screenings andyou do them all over Southeast Texas.
It's such a great program and it'sfree, so let's tell people about it.
Well, yes, thank you Roy. As a matter of fact,
(33:00):
this is actually our twenty third yearof providing these free healthcare services, and
like most projects, it has certainlymorphed and become a more robust and ever
empowering opportunity for men who are medicallyunderserved. And by that it means you
might have insurance, but you can'tafford your deductibles that are very high and
(33:22):
or your insurance might not even coverthese labs. So with our collaborative medical
partners, we are providing these freehealthcare screenings that will provide and their simple
lab test. I mean, it'sjust you know, I know, guys
get a little nervous, just fingerpricks, so no worries, you come
in we have medical staff that willperform these labs. They're quick and easy,
(33:45):
many of them and it's about afive hundred dollar panel and many of
the lab results will get back theircall point of care, and we have
on site Baptist residents, the internalmedicine physicians that will be there to review
the test results and answer each oneof the men's questions that might involve other
(34:05):
areas outside of just simply the labtest. We did these in this format,
which is a really personalized scheduled appointment, so men or have the opportunity
just like if you were to gointo your doctor's office, but we think
even better because we have t shirts, giveaway, lunch, and other kind
of wonderful giveaways for the men thatcome. And this year we're actually offering
(34:30):
a twenty five dollars Jason's Gift cardfor any man that completes their screenings,
So not only do they walk awaywith a bunch of goodies, they also
get a gift card, but thedocs are there on site to go over
the results, and if they don'thave a primary care or someone that is
following them, then they will actuallynavigate them to the Baptist residency clinic and
(34:54):
or some of the other convenient, thoroughly qualified clinics in that area, if
that is what each one of themen desire. So marvelously, we have
a wonderful group of dedicated, verygiving, compassionate physicians and medical staff who
will be with us in each oneof these sites and again provide these screenings
(35:17):
which you and maybe we didn't outlinethose, but it does include a PSA
which is the prostate specific energy andjust a LAP test, a full cholesterol
panel, and Southeast Texas Cardiology thanksto Gg Mazzola and her wonderful, amazing
dad, doctor Rudy Sotolanga, theirclinicians are there with the necessary strips and
(35:40):
machines so we can provide that pointof care with a cholesterol in addition to
blood glucose. And then we havethe port Author Health Department and other professionals
that are doing blood pressure pulse actsand the Baptist other group from the Baptist
division will be doing HIV and HEPCfor anyone who is interested in those tests.
(36:02):
So it's a wonderful opportunity that willtake the gentlemen less than an hour
to get the test and to havea consult with a physician and importantly also
be provided with cancer prevention information soyou walk away hopefully better informed and taking
a healthier track so that you caneradicate or reduce some of your risk.
(36:27):
And as you probably know, Roy, many of the men in our area,
we do have those that have elevatedPSAs, but the majority have hypertension,
diabetes and other chronic also life threateningdiseases, and we're there to help
them, arm them with information andalso navigate them to access to care so
(36:47):
they can have a happy and longlife and to be part of their family
and community. Well, y'all dosuch a great job. I mean,
this is the twenty third year. Not only does it not cost y'all entice
people by the refreshments, the lunch, the giveaways as you said, so
it's a complete experience. And throughdoing this over the years, y'all have
(37:14):
certainly saved people's lives because of thesetests that things. You know, people
learned information because you know in order. You know, sometimes people may be
scared to get tests, but ifthings are called early, often they're very
manageable. It's just that when thingsgo undiagnosed exactly, early detection is the
(37:37):
key for prevention and to hopefully havea healthcare track where you have not a
latent diagnosis of where the prognosis isso much poor. So it's exactly I
mean, particularly with prostate cancer, and there's a higher propensity of African American
population that do have a a greaterincident of prostate cancers. So caught early,
(38:02):
it's a near one hundred percent successin terms of treatment and from men
to have a long life and tobe able to manage through their care.
So the Gift of Life for thosemen that don't have insurance and have elevated
PSAs we continue their healthcare, wepay for their next step of senior urologist,
(38:23):
the pathology. So Gift of Lifeunderwrites all these costs and they can
simply make an appointment by calling Giftof Life at four zero nine eight three
three three six sixty three, oryou can go online to our website fill
out a very simple form at Giftof Life bmt dot org. So we're
here to help advance the health andwellness of Southeast Texas men and will be
(38:46):
in Port Author next Saturday at thePort Author Health Clinic on June the third.
Then we'll be an Orange the nextSaturday, on June tenth, and
then in Beaumont at the Julian BeanRodgers Cancer It's on June twenty fourth.
And we've expanded our outreach to HardenCounty and we'll be at their health department
(39:07):
and that will be in July.So our summer screenings are here to help
the men in Southeast Texas. Weencourage everyone call register and also get your
twenty five dollars free gift card toJason's Delhi. Well, Norma, thank
you so much. I am lookingat y'all flyer right now on the Gift
of Life website. I'll share iton the social and also on your Facebook
(39:30):
page, and I'll share it onmy social media. I know it's out
there. Y'all. Make it soeasy for people to show up and you
can register. There's a QR code. Put it over your phone so that
things move quicker. It's so important. We're about to wrap things up,
but thank y'all so much for allthe Gift of Life does throughout the year
(39:52):
for the people of Southeast Texas. It's so important to give where you live,
folks. When you also remember, let's support Gift of Life and all
their fundraisers as well, because they'redoing so much great stuff for the community.
Thank you so much. Thank you, Roy, and thank you to
everyone who supports our local nonprofit whereasyou know, and you've just said,
(40:14):
all the money stays local and helpsthe women and men that we love in
our community. Thank you for sharingour message. Thank you. We are
back with the Roy West Show, heard worldwide on the free I Heart radio
