Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Roy West Radio Show on AM five
sixty klv I. I'm your guest host, Debbie Bridgman, and
we have a packed show for you today, including Becky
Howard with the Baptist Hospital Foundation. They have some fundraising
events coming up that you can be a part of. Also,
Juliana Davila, she is with the Beaumont CBB. She's the

(00:21):
marketing manager and there's a lot of things to do
in Beaumont, Texas this summer, so she'll let you know
about that. And we'll be closing it up with Derwin Samuels.
He is the executive director of human Resources at Beaumont
ISD and they have some exciting new opportunities for you,
so you don't want to miss that. But we are
kicking off the show in major style with my friend

(00:42):
and my boss and my lady friend who's everywhere all
around the community, Jackie Simeon.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
I have never had an introduction like that, and I
am not mad about it. Thank you, Debbie. That was wonderful.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
But today we're taking off the Beaumont ISD hat and
we're talking about self care.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Yes we are, Yes we are, and I'm excited to
talk about it. I have a self care fare coming
up in July, and this is the fourth one. Very
excited about it.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
So just exactly like I know, we're putting women's health
under the microscope and we're talking about fibroids. So what
exactly is this event and kind of give a little
bit of history.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Very good, Well, the event is being put on, as
you said, by the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute, which provides
a comprehensive approach to community based leadership and action, and
through grassroots organizing, leadership development, and community education, the Barbara
Jordan Leadership Institute strengthens the current generation of Black leadership,

(01:41):
recruiting and preparing the next generation. And of course we
do advocacy in the Black community and communities at large.
We provide voter education information for example, and voter education
events and health events such as this. And in twenty
two the Texas Legislature declared July as Texas Fibroid Awareness Month.

(02:08):
And so this is one of several events across the
state of Texas that helps fulfill the awareness component of
Texas Fibroid Awareness Month. This event, as you mentioned, this
is the fourth annual one and I'm so proud to
say that Beaumont was the very first city to kick

(02:30):
this off for the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute. These events
are also held in Houston, Texas, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Waco,
but the Beaumont event four years ago was the very
first one. We've always had them on the campus of
Lamar Institute of Technology at the Paul and Connie Zooch

(02:52):
Multi Purpose Center. And it's just a day of fun,
a day of music, a vendor fair, and of course
lots of education. And I'm very happy about this year's
speakers who will be presenting in different areas.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
So what is the day of the event. And you know,
it sounds like a lot of fun, But how much
is it going to cost? If I want to.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Go, it will cost you absolutely nothing. And I want
you to bring the kids. On top of that, bring
the entire family. Don't look for babysitting. Don't say, oh,
I can't go because I don't know what to do
with the kids. We will have We will have fun
for the kids. Three sixty camera, some games for the
kids to play, something for everybody. So mark your calendar

(03:37):
for Saturday, July twelfth, from nine am to two pm
again at the Paul and Connie Suits Multi Purpose Center
at Lambar Institute of Technology on East Levaka Street. It
is absolutely free, no registration necessary. All you have to
do is walk in the building and if you are

(04:01):
among the first two hundred in attendance, you will receive
a ticket which will entitle you to a free lunch
from Charlie's Barbecue. And we all know about Charlie's Barbecue.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Right, I'm hungry now.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
They have been recognized by the New York Times, They've
been recognized by Texas Monthly magazine. Hey, they are among
the best of the best. I don't know what Charlie
is whipping up for us this year, but in the
past we've had chopped barbecue beef sandwiches with chips and
a drink. I mean, you know, we're filling your bellies

(04:39):
up and giving you good information about your health as well.
I don't see how you can beat that on a Saturday.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
I was just about to say, I'm not sure what
five roids are of, but I'm coming, So that is
the question. I mean, I think a lot of people
are familiar with a lot of different events, you know,
whether it be Alzheimer's or cancer or things are kind
of more familiar with, you know, fibroids. What are fibroids?

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Well, Debbie, you are among the fortunate women who if
you don't know what they are, you're among those who
are fortunate because it affects up to eighty percent of women.
It's non cancerous, but it's a growth in your uterus
that can cause you all other that can cause you
a bunch of other issues such as infertility, heavy periods,

(05:26):
pelvic pain, lots of other issues, and again affects up
to eighty percent of women. So this is something that
I have several friends who have dealt with fibroids for years.
It's kept them from having children, It's caused them all
kinds of physical pain. So it is an issue that

(05:46):
needs to be talked about and learned about.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
So you said you're going to have a lot of
speakers there. I guess you know, they'll obviously be talking
about that. What are some of the other topics that
might be covered.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Well, our first speaker, Elia Wells, is a well known
hairstylist in the area, and it may interest you to know, Debbie,
that chemical relaxers that a lot of black women get.
I have a relaxer in my hair. Relaxers have been
linked to fibroids, so she will be talking about that.

(06:19):
She'll touch on that a little bit and talk about
some other hair health topics as well. We will have
doctor Yes doctor Inkim Naiwobe, who is a nurse practitioner
in Southeast Texas. She'll be talking specifically about fibroids. Doctor
Derek Young who is back to the area. He and
his wife have spent about thirty years in San Antonio,

(06:42):
but they recently relocated back home in Southeast Texas. He
will be talking about the issues of slipping and falling
that affects a lot of our elderly population. And then
we will also have doctor Jason Mensa who will talk
about mental health because it all ties in. But we'll

(07:03):
also have some banking professionals. I'd like to thank bow
My Community Credit Union. They're one of our sponsors, along
with Revived Recovery. Bo My Community Credit Union will be
there of course taking new members and also talking about
how you need to save for medical emergencies. So just

(07:23):
a variety of vendors, a variety of topics that will
be discussed, a full day of fun music, even some
dancing Debbie.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
I mean, I heard the rumor about the line dancing
sessions that were going to be going on. Is that
going to be like a specific time or throughout the
whole event.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
It'll be out there throughout the entire event. And you
probably have seen the Southeast Texas line Steppers. They are
at all kinds of events. Most recently, I think they
were at the Juneteenth Celebrations doing some line dancing out there.
I saw office Sir Haley Moro was getting her step
on line dancers. So please come out learn the latest

(08:07):
line dances. So you'll be getting your exercise in getting
ready for the summertime backyard barbecues. You'll be a hit
and all the family gatherings this summer thanks to the
Southeast Texas line Steppers.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
I love that. So the event again is July twelfth.
Who is hosting this event?

Speaker 2 (08:25):
This event, I'm happy to say, is being hosted by
members of my sorority, the Alpha Omego Omega chapter of
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. And we are all about
service to all mankind, So that is their participation in
this event.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
I love that, and I'm sure it goes without saying
you'd love to have some sponsors.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Absolutely. Sponsorship is not closed again big thanks to Revive
Recovery in Beaumont. They are our presenting sponsor my Community
Credit Union they are also one of our sponsors. But
we would love to have more sponsorship. And you can
contact me at four zero nine seven eight one five

(09:11):
six one four. That's four zero nine seven eight one
five six one four for more information. And of course
I'm all over social media, so I am not hard
to contact or find at all. Just find me on Facebook, Instagram,
LinkedIn X all of your major platforms.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
All right, So if people need more information, is it
best to contact you or do you guys have like
a specific page for the event.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
You can also go to BJLI dot org. That is
the website of the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
Love it. So this big event you said again l
T Multipurpose Center July twelfth, and everybody, not just ladies,
but everybody.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
That's right. You know, in the past we've had the
Gift of Life to participate and they've signed up gentlemen
for prostate screenings. So men, I mean, bring the entire family.
We'll have the Life Share Blood Centers mobile unit on
site will also have Tan there doing health checks, blood

(10:16):
pressure checks and other checks as well. So it's an
event for the entire family and for all ages. No
one needs to stay home at all.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
Everybody and what in an incentive to get there early
to get that free lunch?

Speaker 2 (10:31):
Oh yes, I mean, you don't want to miss Charlie's barbecue.
It's always delicious. They are my favorites. I appreciate them
being a friend of the event here after year and again.
It's been three wonderful years so far, so I know
that this fourth annual event will be equally explosive.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
So what is your greatest hope for the event? Like,
you know, how do you feel that it's going to
affect the community and the health of women in Southeast Texas.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
I just hope that more people will be educated on
the topic of fibroids. I hope more people will be
educated on all the other topics we'll touch on, such
as mental health, hair care, slips and falls, and I
hope we exceed the number of people who have attended
in the past. In the past, we've had two to
three hundred people, so it would be nice to see

(11:21):
four to five hundred at this year's event.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
That sounds good. All right, we got about thirty seconds left,
so once again, where can people go to get more information?

Speaker 2 (11:30):
Again, mark your calendar for Saturday July twelfth, nine to
two at the LIT Multipurpose Center. You can contact me
for more information on all social media platforms. Just look
me up, Jackie Simeon. You can also give me a call,
so write this number down four zero nine seven eight

(11:51):
one five six one four four zero nine seven eight
one five six one four.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
All right, Jackie Simon, thank you for being a part
of the show.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Thank you. Debbie Bridgman, always a joy to be with you.

Speaker 1 (12:05):
We'll be right back with the Roy West Radio Show
on AM five sixty klv I. And we're back with
the Roy West Radio Show on AM five sixty klv I.
I am your guest host, Debbie Bridgeman, and now we
are going to be talking about Baptist Hospital and the
foundation and everything that they have going on. So please

(12:26):
welcome the Assistant Director of Philanthropic Services, Becky Howard.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
Good morning, Thanks for having us this morning. We love
to talk about Baptist Hospital.

Speaker 1 (12:36):
Well, I know you've been there for quite a while.
What exactly do you do there and how long have
you been there?

Speaker 3 (12:42):
Well, I've actually been here not quite a year. I've
been in healthcare. I've been healthcare for about twenty but
I've only been at Baptist for about ten months, Okay,
and I'd love it. The Baptist Hospital Foundation is the
program that works are and we are a lot of

(13:02):
people don't understand what a foundation does and what what
does that mean. So as a nonprofit hospital, we have
to uh but we have to stay up with times.
We've got to provide services for our patients. So the
foundation is responsible for raising funds for those for projects.

(13:25):
Whether it be a huge project like the cancer center
that we are currently building a new cancer center. It's
just beautiful and it's going to bring so much to
this area and be able to keep our patients closer
to home. Or we have items like we provide when
the nick you needs special equipment, we take care of that.

(13:47):
So it can be just minor I say minor. Those
are not minor things. But whether it's something like that,
or it's something in the emergency room to provide area
for children, So it can be any number of things.
So the foundation is responsible for raising those funds whether

(14:10):
it be through grants, which is a lot a big
part of it, or fundraisers, which is where I come in.

Speaker 4 (14:19):
Events.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
Is I feel like I have a sign in my
head that says events or us than that for a
long time, and those events help to raise a lot
of those funds that we don't get in grants and
other donations. So we have, like I said, the cancer
Center going up and should start seeing those doors opened

(14:41):
toward the first of the year around February is hopefully.
I got to tour it recently and just it's so exciting,
not just the beauty of the building, but what it's
going to.

Speaker 4 (14:52):
Bring to this area and.

Speaker 3 (14:56):
Keep people local instead of having to drive so far
are for for their cancer care.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
And yeah, that's what I was going to mention, you know,
because when you hear that that a loved one or
a neighbor or someone has cancer, either are like, oh,
I'm going to have to drive to M. D Anderson
every day or whatever. So this will help I think
our whole area to where people don't have to drive
to Houston every day.

Speaker 4 (15:22):
It will and and again not long.

Speaker 3 (15:25):
Not only is it going to be just a beautiful building,
but it's going to have so many more individualized services
as far as how they're chemo is done, how the
radiation is done, and it's just going to uh it
really is going to be a plus for this area.

Speaker 4 (15:42):
I'm super excited to have to have that here.

Speaker 3 (15:44):
But it is a very costly building, you know, it's uh,
it is a hefty price tag on it. But our
community really needs, really needs that, so a lot of
our fundraisers go toward that.

Speaker 4 (15:58):
We are also in the proces.

Speaker 3 (16:00):
Says of renovating our behavioral health center. You know, we're
the only one in this area, and it is going
It is a huge renovation. We're talking adding a floor,
branching out, you know, not just not just going in
and putting a new fresh coat of pain on mental health.
Is It really means a lot to a lot of people,

(16:23):
But yet it has always been as though there's not
enough care, not enough, not a priority. And it is
it is. You know, when I came to work here,
I knew it was here. I knew the behavioral health
center was here, but I did not know did you
know that they take care of children too?

Speaker 1 (16:43):
It's you know, I was gonna say, just actually, I
guess it was less than a year ago. But the
Chamber of Commerce has a mentorship program and one of
our little field trips we did was to the Behavioral
Center and it's amazing just to see the art room
that they you know, the patients want to go in there.
There was a music room, there was different things because

(17:04):
I think different people respond differently, you know, and they
may want to do some art, they may want to
hear some music, they want to go in that little
pavilion area and go outside and you know, just get
some fresh air. But yeah, so they were kind of
telling us a little bit about what they were going
to be doing there in terms of some upgrades.

Speaker 4 (17:21):
It is.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
It's going to be huge, and it is going to
be more inviting and more comfortable and more homelike for
the patients and where children are concerned, they'll be family
rooms and the again like the art and the things
like that. They'll be outdoor, be able to go outdoors
and do things.

Speaker 2 (17:39):
So we have a.

Speaker 3 (17:41):
Lot of large, large, large projects going on that we're
excited about. And again they're going to be so beneficial
to our community. That's the exciting part is how much Southeastexis.

Speaker 4 (17:54):
Is going to benefit.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
So we so in order to do that, like I said,
we have to have fundraiser, and part of fundraisers is
that they're fun, you know, right exactly, And we try
to have those things that people will enjoy going to.
In October, October seventeenth is our third annual Pardon Clays

(18:16):
to Raise Clay Shoot. It's at at one in one
hundred gun Club and it's a great success. It's a
lot of fun that they I'm really impressed with that
gun club. They He've done a great job with it
out there. But October is a great month. I got
to go last year. I had just been here a
few weeks when I went, and it was just we

(18:37):
had great weather which didn't hurt anybody's feelins. But and
that is going to our cancer center. The funds from
that are going to our cancer center. Registration is open.
I'll get that website here in a moment.

Speaker 4 (18:51):
It is open. And we have sponsorships. If you say, oh,
I don't, I don't.

Speaker 3 (18:55):
Do that, but I'm happy to support your sponsorships available
as well. That's coming up in October, and again that's
our third annual and we have just seen it grow
and grow as you and I were talking. October is
a very.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
Busy month, and that's something else, a brand new event
that's coming up in October as well.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
We do we have two new events. One is one
is October twenty fifth and this one, this one, I'm
really excited about this. M and D Hardware pardon me,
is partnering with us. They are, well, I say they're partnering.
They're pretty much taking the whull reins on this one.

Speaker 2 (19:34):
They are.

Speaker 3 (19:35):
We are going to have the first boom Town Barbecue Bash.
It is going to be out. It's been the top
gladdest city museum on Saturday, October twenty fifth. I believe
the time is ten to three. It's going to be
a sanctioned barbecue cookoff competition. We of course it's at Boomtown,

(19:56):
so we're going to have lots of the re enactment's
going on. There's going to be entertainment throughout the day.
Of course, the gusher will they'll do that. You get
to vote for your favorite barbecue. This is a family event.
It's going to be all about family fun. It should
be a great day to do that. We also have

(20:18):
that is also live on the website for ticket information
and so forth.

Speaker 4 (20:24):
If you get your tickets ahead.

Speaker 3 (20:26):
Of time, there's a small discount, and then closer to
the at the gate is just a little bit more.
But we'll have more information on that as well. Like
I said, M and D Hardware is really they're an
amazing partner to us. So this is gonna be great.

(20:46):
We're excited about this one. It's gonna be a lot
of fun, I believe awesome.

Speaker 1 (20:49):
And then just real quick, you also have a new
Wins event that's coming up November first.

Speaker 3 (20:55):
We do November first, we are going to have a
fashion show brunch at the Holiday Inn on Walden Road
in Beaumont. We are reaching out to our local boutiques,
so this is the Southeast Texas Fashion Show. Our local
boutiques will be showing off they're great fashions. We are

(21:18):
going to have a wonderful brunch with all of the
fun drinks and so forth, and lots of shopping because
along with the fashion show, the boutiques will be there
with there with items you can purchase. It'll be you know,
November first, it's just right before holiday season or kind
of a kickoff, so it'll be good time to shop

(21:39):
and so forth for that.

Speaker 1 (21:41):
All right, so we've got the Clays to raise Clay
shoot October seventeenth. You've got the barbecue Boomtown Bash coming
up October twenty fifth. Lots of stuff going on with
the foundation. Where can we get more information?

Speaker 4 (21:55):
B h set Foundation dot org.

Speaker 1 (22:00):
All right, easy enough, Thank you, Albert, thank you so
much for the part of the show.

Speaker 4 (22:05):
Okay, thanks Debbie.

Speaker 1 (22:06):
All right, we'll be right back with the Roy West
Radio Show on AM five sixty klv I. And we're
back with the Roy West Radio Show on News Talk
AM five sixty. I am your guest host, Debbie Bridgman,
and we are moving on. We're talking about things to
do in Beaumont, Texas, and we've got the Beaumont CBB

(22:26):
marketing manager here. Good morning to Juliana Wla.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
Davla Davela Davla.

Speaker 1 (22:33):
All right, well, Juliana, tell us a little bit about
your role and what for anybody who doesn't know what
exactly is the Beaumont CBB.

Speaker 5 (22:42):
Well, good morning, thank you for having me. So I
am the marketing manager for the Beaumont Convention and Visitors
Bureau and the Beaumont CBB as we call it, we
just kind of shorten it is basically a department within
the City of Beaumont, so we're part of the City
of Beaumont government and our role or our purpose really
is to promote Beaumont, market Beaumont and make it a

(23:03):
premiere meetings destination so people can come in as a visitor,
people can come in to do meetings and conventions, and
basically bring people to Beaumont so that they can spend
their money in Beomont and that we can reap the
benefits of that economic impact and just kind of affect
the city in a positive way.

Speaker 1 (23:22):
And Beaumont, I mean, you guys have been so busy
continually doing new things and new events, and it's exciting.
I mean, especially when you first drive into downtown Beaumont
from ten and you see the big mural that says Beaumont.
It's very welcoming. And you know, just driving around downtown
and even all throughout Beaumont and seeing you know, whether
it be the lighting boxes you know that have the

(23:46):
murals on them, or just downtown with a lot of
the older buildings and the big murals, but it's just
Beaumont's very colorful right.

Speaker 5 (23:53):
Now, Yes it is, and we're we're starting to be
known in other cities in Texas as kind of a
mural destination, which is really exciting because we do have
some incredible murals and I think that because we live here,
we see them all the time and so kind of
no big deal to us. But one of our murals, Genesis,
which is on Cedar Street, is one of the three

(24:16):
largest murals in the state of Texas. So we are
pretty well known for that one. And Drew Merritt was
the artist for that. He's an Austin based artist, but
very well known in the mural community and a really
remarkable mural that brings a lot of attention.

Speaker 1 (24:30):
Love it. So, you know, it is summertime. Everybody's looking
for something to do. What are some things? I know
you guys kind of have a bucket list summer, so
tell us that.

Speaker 5 (24:41):
Yeah, so I'm really excited about this. So we have
it's a digital pass. It's called we're calling it our
bucket List Summer, Our Beaumont bucket List, and so it's
a way for people to download the past. It's free,
it's on our website and so basically a way for
people to do something different every single day of the

(25:01):
summer with their family, with their friends alone, whoever. And
it's something for everybody. So there's food, there's restaurants, there's murals,
there's activities, there's places to go, there's shopping. There's a
little bit of something for everybody. And so we're making
it kind of a gamified pass so that when you go,
you can check into these locations and you get points.

(25:23):
Then you can rack up your points and redeem prizes
here at our office downtown Nice.

Speaker 1 (25:28):
I like that, and I think, you know, even for
people that are here in Beaumont, there's a lot of
new things going on, and a lot of times we
just don't know, you know, or areware until a friend
posts on social media or you're at church and somebody's
talking about something. But there's just so many things to do.
I mean for people that are like, well, I've been
here forever and there's nothing to do. I mean, what

(25:48):
do you tell somebody there's nothing to do in Beaumont?

Speaker 2 (25:52):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (25:52):
I mean, and I will say that I used to
be one of those people of like, well, I've seen everything,
I've done everything. But that's not really true because until
you see it from a visitor perspective and realize that
there's so many things to do, Like there are so
many people who have never been to the McFadden Wardhouse,
or they've never been to the Art Museum, or they've
never been to Cattail Marsh. There's so many things that

(26:14):
are right here that people can do. And so my
answer when people say, oh, there's nothing to do, Number one,
I personally put together a monthly roundup of everything there
is to do any given months, so you can check
that on our social media and our website. And then
I really just think it's a matter of looking, you know,
where are you looking. Maybe you look at our social media,
look at check things on our website, and just kind

(26:37):
of look at the event calendar. There's always something to do.

Speaker 6 (26:40):
Always.

Speaker 2 (26:41):
You just have to learn.

Speaker 1 (26:42):
I was gonna say, there's so many festivals, and I know,
like years ago when my son was in cob that's
when you really start being like, oh we can take
the cub Scouts to the John J. French Museum, Edison Museum.
Oh there's the Texas Energy Museum. Like there's so many
different things. The Art Museum. I mean, I can't even
tell you how many free family Arts Days that I've

(27:03):
been to exactly there are there's there's always something to do.
And just recently I was out at Cattel Marsh and
that's just you you know, if you just have the
time just to kind of sit and just quietly watch,
you just know what you're going to see out there exactly.

Speaker 5 (27:19):
It's it's it is my favorite place in Boma. And
I'm a little biased, I guess, but it's my favorite
place to go. They have so many things to see
and do, but you don't have to do anything. You
can just go, like you said, relax, have a cup
of coffee and just kind of watch the birds. But
you know, every week they have programming. So every Tuesday
and Thursday they offer van tours. If you've never been

(27:41):
on a van tour, they're free. They take about an
hour or so and you get to drive around the
marsh and whoever is the tour will point out, you know,
different birds and different plants and alligators and turtles and
all kinds of stuff and those are free. And then
every Saturday I teach yoga out there Saturday mornings from
nine thirty to ten thirty. It's free, open the public.
It's great. It's super relaxing and nice people go walking

(28:04):
and biking, and I mean it's really lots of birding
goes on out there. It's really beautiful. And my new
favorite thing is now they have what they call the
Discovery Pad, so it's kind of like a little interactive
learning play area for kids. Adults also like it, but
there's all different things for kids to do and kind
of explore nature with this Discovery Pad, which is really exciting.

Speaker 2 (28:27):
That's cool.

Speaker 1 (28:28):
And I know, of course the Tarrell Park Nature Center
is there as well, and we had Rebecca Woodland on
last week talking about some of the things for the
kids to do. But I know they've got some mural
cubes out there.

Speaker 5 (28:41):
Yeah, so in Tarrell Park, Tarot Park is just phenomenal.
But in Tarot Park, of course you have the Nature
Center with Rebecca and she's awesome and has great programs.
But we have a nature trail. It's like a little
sidewalk that connects the Nature Center to cat Till Marsh,
which is about a little ten minute walk and it's
been painted for Mural Festival. But we recently move the
cubes that were done for a mural festival downtown to

(29:03):
the to Tyrell Park. So it's nice. It's like a
nice little open art gallery. You can kind of walk
around and check out the cubes, and it's a great
place for them to just kind of live because they're
not going to get you know, there's nothing out there
to obstruct the view of them, and so people can
kind of walk around and explore the cubes and take
photos and things like that, and it's a nice way

(29:26):
to connect. Kattol Marsian Chill Park, I love it, Till
Park Nature Center.

Speaker 1 (29:30):
Yeah, and again, so many things to do in Beaumont,
and one of our big things we talk about all
the museums that are in Beaumont and the Babes the
Harrieus Museum that's right off of By ten. But he
has a special day coming up.

Speaker 5 (29:42):
Yeah, So Bezaher's birthday is actually on June twenty six,
which is next yeah, next Thursday, and so they're going
to be doing a couple of different things. So on
one of the days, they're doing a proclamation at City Council,
also doing a special screening of a babeses Aharious biography

(30:03):
movie at the Jefferson Theater on Friday the twenty seventh,
which is really exciting. And then on the twenty eighth,
they're doing an unveiling at the museum from ten am
until noon. They're unveiling the Medal of Freedom that was
given to babes ahariis posthumously, I guess a couple of
years ago. I think it was in twenty twenty one.

(30:24):
But they're gonna bring it to the museum and unveil
it and then display it at the museum. So it's
the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is a really big deal.

Speaker 2 (30:31):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (30:32):
And then speaking of the theater, that's always another thing
to do at the.

Speaker 6 (30:38):
Bucks.

Speaker 2 (30:39):
You can't beat that exactly.

Speaker 5 (30:40):
Yeah, classic movie nights every Friday, and it's a great
place to go, number one, because you get to see
really fun movies and they have you know, popcorn and
all kinds of concessions. But it's just a gorgeous theater.
I mean, it's really a remarkable way to spend you know,
a Friday evening. Go there and then have a little
dinner and wrap it up.

Speaker 1 (30:59):
Yeah, it is always something to do in Beaumont, Texas.

Speaker 2 (31:01):
That there is always something to do.

Speaker 1 (31:04):
So we've got about a minute left for people that
you know they've been. This is a lot of great information.
Where do I go to get more. How can people
find out, you know, what to do in Beaumont, Texas.

Speaker 5 (31:14):
So you can check our website, which is visit beaumontx
dot com. You can go to our social media so
any social media platform, it's at visit Beaumont, TX. We
also have you know, little videos that we'll post every
now and then. But social media and our website are
the best way to kind of check up on things.
But if you're not a big techy person, you can

(31:35):
drop by our office. We're five of five Willow Street,
like you said, right across from the big Beaumont Mural,
and I will always be happy to talk to you
and tell you what's going on and just kind of
let you know, So feel free to come by.

Speaker 1 (31:46):
Well, and there's a lot of great resources that you
guys have too, just like if you went to a hotel,
the Little Flyers.

Speaker 5 (31:52):
And yes, we've got visitor guides and pamphlets and everything
you could want under the sun.

Speaker 1 (31:57):
Perfect Well, Juliana, thank you so much for being a
part of the show.

Speaker 5 (32:01):
Thank you, Debbie, I appreciate it having me.

Speaker 1 (32:04):
All Right, we'll be right back with the Roy West
Radio Show on AM five sixty klb I. Welcome back
to the Roy West Radio Show on AM five sixty
klv I. I'm your guest host, Debbie Bridgeman, and now
we're headed over to Beaumont ISD because well, on your
own terms, that's what they're saying. They've got some part

(32:25):
time positions open. Please welcome my next guest. He's the
executive director of Human Resources, mister Derwin Samuels.

Speaker 6 (32:33):
Good morning, good morning, good one, and thank you miss
Debbie for having me. I'm excited to share some great
news for educators in our area.

Speaker 1 (32:41):
This sounds amazing. So we know we need teachers, we
know we got stuff going on. This is brand new,
make the big announcement, Derwin. The floor is yours, so listen.

Speaker 7 (32:52):
Beaumont ID is proud to introduce a new part time
certified teacher position design to maximize flexibility and impact. Thirty
five teachers can now work up to twenty hours a week,
earning forty dollars an hour. That's eight hundred dollars a week,
without the demands of a full time role. We created
this to offer a work life balance while still meeting

(33:14):
students with high quality instruction.

Speaker 1 (33:17):
So how would that kind of work with these teachers like, say,
only teach morning classes because then they'd have the afternoon
to do with they you know, or vice versa. And
I guess each campus would fit them in to meet
their terms and their terms at the campus as well.

Speaker 7 (33:32):
Exactly exactly. It's a flexible schedule. You can choose morning
afternoon specific days that work for you.

Speaker 6 (33:38):
It's really dependent on the campus need. But because we
have so many campuses and we have a very neat.

Speaker 7 (33:44):
Across the district, we are sure that we can find
a schedule that kind of meets what that certified educator
is looking for.

Speaker 1 (33:53):
So I guess you're kind of looking for maybe retirees
that we're done but are like, oh, I'm still itching
to teach. I don't want to get back full time.
I'll do a little. What kind of certifications and things
would this new position require?

Speaker 5 (34:07):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (34:07):
Great, No, that's a great question, miss Debbie.

Speaker 7 (34:09):
So look, this role is great for the retired educator
that still wants to teach part time.

Speaker 6 (34:14):
Uh maybe you're a parent or caregiver and you just
can't work full time. Or maybe you are certified and.

Speaker 7 (34:20):
You were in the professional before and took a break
and you just want to kind of softball your your
way back in UH.

Speaker 6 (34:28):
The the the role is specific to.

Speaker 7 (34:32):
Some of our high level needs math science, UH English.

Speaker 6 (34:38):
But guess what, we also have a need for a
choir teacher.

Speaker 7 (34:42):
We also have a need for for a welding instructor,
and so uh, just depending on what your certification area,
and I am sure that regardless, we can find some
area for you for you to support uh. And so
so maybe you you're not social study certified with your
English certified, we get we want certified teachers to utilizing

(35:05):
their pedeological knowledge to come in and support teaching.

Speaker 6 (35:09):
And so whatever a certification area you had.

Speaker 7 (35:12):
If you're interested in working, bonmaized D is interesting in
putting you to work.

Speaker 4 (35:16):
Nice.

Speaker 1 (35:17):
So I guess there's like the sky's the limit elementary secondary.

Speaker 6 (35:22):
Like everywhere exactly.

Speaker 7 (35:24):
So you're definitely be placed first by your certification area.
But we would need we need intervention, a small group instruction,
we need to we need teachers to cover vacancies. Also,
you know there's a we have issues with finding substitutes
right now, and so we would use those those teachers

(35:46):
as well to submit in rooms.

Speaker 6 (35:48):
But because you have that content area, you have that experience.

Speaker 7 (35:53):
We would pay you at an advance that advanced hourly
wage of forty dollars.

Speaker 1 (35:58):
That's nice, that's really nice. Plus you still get to
make an impact doing what you love, which is teaching.
So I love that. I guess the experience I'm looking
at the qualification, so at least one year of student
teaching or approved teaching internship.

Speaker 7 (36:12):
Correct, yes, yes, ma'am, yes, so you get what we're
looking for is experience.

Speaker 6 (36:17):
Even if that's one year.

Speaker 7 (36:19):
This is fast paced, it's four hours a day, it's
twenty hours a week, and so usually in more a
regular setting and full time work, we have that specific development.
And not to say that we're not going to support
with profession development if you're entering, but I think the
runway for that is a little different, and so that's
why we're looking for experience. Look, the fact of the

(36:41):
matter is we are thinking outside of the box. We're
trying to innovate in order to attract and retain talent,
and with the teacher shorts across the state, positions like
this really help us kind of fill in the gap.
And so that is why I think we've made this
investment into the part time teacher role.

Speaker 1 (37:00):
I love it. I love it, and I guess each
campus is ready to embrace all of these new part
time teachers just as much as any full time teacher.

Speaker 6 (37:08):
Listen our principles.

Speaker 7 (37:09):
Our campus leaders are chopping at the bit to find
teachers that are willing to come in and work those
those four hours. It is, it's a it's an ideal situation.
No matter where you are in your life, of what
you have going on, we can find a schedule that
will accommodate your needs.

Speaker 6 (37:26):
Now.

Speaker 1 (37:26):
Of course, if somebody wants to work full time, you'll welcome.

Speaker 6 (37:31):
Come on, come on, come on.

Speaker 7 (37:33):
If you are looking for full time employment, we have that,
we have that too. And so and I also want
to add maybe the four hours of the commitment to
the four hours a day, uh you know doesn't work
for you?

Speaker 6 (37:43):
Can you do two hours a day?

Speaker 7 (37:45):
Can you can you commit uh to to subbing on
a specific campus so many days a month. We are
we're so in need for that level of experience, that
rich experience, that.

Speaker 6 (37:58):
We are willing to work with you.

Speaker 7 (38:00):
So even if you're looking at well, maybe the four
hours doesn't really work, don't don't don't cast us aside.
Call the Office of Human Resources for Boma I Z
four zero nine six one seven five two nine eight
And let's.

Speaker 6 (38:14):
See what we can do to get you on board.

Speaker 1 (38:16):
I love that. And you guys do a lot of
educator job fairs, you know here in the community. Plus
you guys are always going out to the different universities
in college and attracting these fresh new students that are
looking for positions. Do you guys have anything plan that's
coming up?

Speaker 2 (38:32):
Yes, ma'am.

Speaker 7 (38:32):
Look the beauty of working in human resources that we
get to touch all of our educators. That educator might
not be in a classroom, It could be a custodian,
it could be a child nutrition worker.

Speaker 3 (38:43):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (38:43):
And we actually have are hosting a jofre in July.

Speaker 7 (38:48):
The dates are are are going to be on our
website early next week for all of our auxiliary positions.
So that is uh that is gonna be in child nutrition,
that's transportation that's made and operations, and also their positions
in our police department. Maybe you want to be a
public safety officer or maybe you want to work less
than four hours and be a cost and guard. I

(39:08):
think that schedule is three hours a day, and so
there are many positions that are available. If you don't
know what you want to do when you get the
once we put the information out for the job there,
come by anyway, Let's talk about your interests and we'll
find something that fits what you want to do.

Speaker 1 (39:24):
I love that. We've got less than a minute, so
tell us. How can people apply?

Speaker 6 (39:29):
It's simple.

Speaker 7 (39:30):
Just go to www dot bmt id dot com slash jobs,
look for the part time certified teacher.

Speaker 6 (39:37):
Position or any other position that you may think.

Speaker 7 (39:39):
You're interested, or give our office a call for your
nine six five nine eight.

Speaker 6 (39:47):
We'll walk you through that process.

Speaker 7 (39:48):
Whether you're looking for a side income, you want to
give back to your community, or you just missed the
classroom of the environment, we'd.

Speaker 6 (39:55):
Love to have you.

Speaker 4 (39:56):
Love it.

Speaker 1 (39:56):
Derwin Samuels, thank you so much for being a part
of the show.
