Speaker 1 (00:03):
Good afternoon.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
You're listening to the Roy West Show here on News
Talk five sixty k l V. I also heard anytime
on the free iHeart radio app, our Apple podcast or
Android podcast. And I had with me the one the
only Pete Rosamondo, head football coach at Lamar University. Finishing
(00:25):
up last year winning season seven and five.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
I believe and.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Coach y'all had a great season. And I know you
want more wins, but it was exciting. The team played well,
they were exciting games and and you won the season.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Was the season was a winning season?
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yeah, we did. We guys did a great job.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
You know, we had a couple of tough games there
in the middle of the schedule, but man, the guys
pulled it together at the end, obviously with a big
win over our border battle.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Yeah, Chnese. And you know this year we get that
game at home.
Speaker 4 (01:01):
So that's one one good reason to get more people
on that season ticket list, you know, get out to
see that game because that's always going to be hotly contested.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Well, absolutely, and this is the time to get your
tickets and uh and your season tickets. And you know
this is you know, the football games are for those
that love football, but it's also a great community event
and there's lots to do. I know, I've brought my
grandkids out there for a lot of games, and they
they stay entertained, And I can't say that they're always
(01:33):
fully engaged with the football game.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Nor should they be. Right, we weren't.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
We weren't when we were their age either, But that's right. Yeah,
it's it's uh. You know, we want to get we
want to get the Beaumont community back to back to
Provo Sumphrey Stadium.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
It's a great venue to watch a game.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
And we've set those game times early at six o'clock
so people can get a little shade by the halftime
and you know see the rest of the game, you know,
under the lights. We're getting new lights in the stadium,
new led lights that will be flashing when we score touchdowns.
So nice, you know, bounce houses, all the things for
the kids that really make it fun and you know,
(02:12):
really good interaction with the players. Our players love the community,
as you know, they're out there doing their you know,
doing their community service, you know, working at schools and
and really doing a really good job of being great
role models for our kids.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
At Beaumont well, and you know that's one of the
great things we have right here in Beaumont, Texas, because
you know, the athletes are very engaged in the community,
and certainly the football team is.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
And you know, our kids, our grandkids growing up, they
look up to these these student athletes as they should.
I mean, here they are playing Division one athletics, which
is quite an accomplishment.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
But I mean it's hands on.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
You get to get up close and then you can
come see them play and and you get interact with them.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
So you can't you can't beat that experience.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
No, I don't think you can.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
And you know, I know Beaumont's been you know, they've
been dying for a winner, and you know they really been.
You know, I know they supported the heck out of
it back in twenty eleven and twelve and thirteen, but
you know, I know they didn't perform the way they
needed to. And I think now we're at the we're
at a time where we we really need the fans
(03:26):
to get us over the top, you know, to really
we got two nationally ranked teams coming to Provos, unfree
in Beaumont and in South Dakota, ranked three in the country,
I think preseason and then you know, University of Central Arkansas,
you know who's perennially been in the top twenty five.
So I think we're gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna require
(03:48):
our fans in the stands, you know, cheering for the
red and the black, and you know, and there's so
many people in the community that have ties to Lamar
and whether it be you know, their parents went here,
the grandparents, they went here, the kids, the grandkids, you know,
their nieces and nephews, and you know, we just want
to get them to the We want to give them
(04:08):
a great, great show that's number one, and really give
them a product they could be proud of. And and
we just need them, you know. I'm just you know,
I know people want to be needed. We need you,
We need you understands we need to cheer loud. We
need you not not only are our community, but our
students as well well.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
And you're you're right on point.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
I mean, I know many of the families here in
Southeast Texas or a reflection of mine. I mean, my
dad came here from San Anton to play basketball in
the fifties.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
I graduated from Lamar.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
My five kids, all of them graduated from Lamar and
some of their spouses that you know, grew up in
the area. So uh so we all, a lot of
us have deep connections here and and anybody that's been
in Boma any length of time all has seen the
transformation out at Lamar University. I mean I graduated in
(05:05):
eighty three, which was Man, that is a long time ago,
right to.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Say it out loud, but it is. It is not
anything similar.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
There was football when I was there and as well,
but you know, it has come a long ways and
the whole experience, you know, I know, I appreciate from
the I love to get to the games and I
love to bring the grandkids and so that it is
a part of who they are and that they talk Lamar,
they talk Lamar football, and that they have a great
(05:35):
time because and and as with many things in life,
you know, they've learned to have something for everybody.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
At these games. Yeah, they have besides great football, which is.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
Important, right, but I think you know, you want you know,
there's only so many bounce hounds that you could jump in.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
You know, that's not a cheer for a touchdown, and
that's it.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
You cheer on a defense and a goal line ste
I mean, and you know, we had so many unbelievable
firsts at Provo Stumfrey, beating the nationally ranked team.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Last year at Weaver State, got.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
Home with a goal line stand and it was just
you know, we've done so many fun you know, beat
beat McNeese two years in a row. It's the first
time that's been done since the sixties, first time we've
had two winning seasons in a row since the sixties.
And that obviously, you know, uh, past results don't don't
guarantee future results, but you know, I think we're moving
(06:31):
in the right direction. We got incredible leadership in our president,
doctor Taylor, and you know, our director of athletics Jeff O'Malley,
and really the whole team over here at at the
Dak and Montagne Center, and you know, it just been
it's just been a great group to work with and
feel really good about them.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
And you know, just come on out and get a
chance to meet him, get a chance to see the
people that make this thing click well.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
And I don't want to applaud you, coach, because uh,
you know, you came into.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
The program and the program.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Was certainly struggling and uh, and you came in because
it's not just turning around a program, it's turning around
a mindset.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
And you know, and you've done that and uh.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
And now we need to continue to get more people
on board coming out there for the entire experience and
something that, as you pointed out, you know, for a
little for a gap there, we didn't have.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
Real good football going on.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Now we've got good, exciting football. And that makes it
so much more fun when you when you show up
to a football game and you can stay engaged in
the game because the game is exciting and interesting and uh,
Lamar's winning, so are right in the game, you know,
And that that makes all the difference in the world.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
I think.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
I think it does too, and I think it you know,
you've got to have something to cheer for, and I
think our guys are worthy to cheer four.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
They're really really good good.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
Most of them are really really good citizens, and a
lot of them are from the Gold Triangle. And you know,
our two best players are from right from here, Beaumont
and Nederland. And those guys are going to show up
and show out every game, and you know, we need
their their their people here. I remember going to Mid
County Madness and watching that game go on and and
(08:19):
I just said, I bet you're sixty percent of the
people maybe more in those stands of Lamar alums, right,
And we need to get those people with that same
type of ferocity here and uh here in Probo Sumpter Stadium.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Well.
Speaker 6 (08:34):
And I gotta believe too, with winning records, that makes
recruiting easier and also the mindset of the kids when
they come in, because are the young men, I should say,
when when they come in they know that Lamar is
expecting to win, and.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
I think they do. And I think that's a that's.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
An important change because when it comes to athletics, when
it comes to life in general, win and winning is fun.
Winning is important. But when you know, but you can
see businesses and you can see teams that you know
when they get in a in a rut, you know,
it's just it's harder to get excited about. But you've
(09:15):
I just you know, really applaud you on your leadership
and I know it's a team effort. You've got a
great coaching staff, but you know you're at the lead
of that and you've done.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
A great job.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
And I can tell people that you know, coming uh
coming forth this season, I'm expecting great football coaches, no pressure.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
Well, it's very kind of you to say all that,
and you know, I think that again, like you said,
we have a great staff, and you know, I learned
from some great people throughout my career and and guys
that have been really super successful. And that's really where
you get your I guess you get your foundations from
the people that have inspired you to work for you.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
You work for them and and.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
They just inspire to be a better coach and a
better person. And you know, I think this business is
really about relationships and really you know, building community relationships,
building university relationships, and building relationships with the high schools.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
And you know, this is the best high school football
in the country.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
And we recruited and we you know, we used to
be we were we were the last uh last choice
for those guys. And I think now where you know,
with our with our facilities and are now obviously are
winning lineage. I think it's it's getting more recruits on
campus and get them to say, yes.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
Well you've done it.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
You've done a great job with that coach and uh,
let's talk a minute about tickets on how people can
go about buying tickets. And I'm on your website right
now as we do this interview online. So you can
certainly buy tickets online and is but there is a
number to call as well.
Speaker 4 (10:54):
Yeah, best best ways, The best way to do it
is online and and everything is electronic as seamless. Right,
you can call the ticket office and Antonio and they'll
get you.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
They'll get you fixed up with with whatever you need, as.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Many as you need.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
And you know, we we have we have almost doubled
our season tickets from a year ago, which doubled the
year before. So I think I think people are paying attention,
and I think that you know, get them now while
they're hot. Way you can get some good seats, you know,
or else you're gonna be right in the sunshine.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
On the on the visitors side. That's right, Okay, we
need some loud people over there too.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
He makes a difference, and uh, the ticket office numbers
four zero nine eight A zero one seven one five.
All you have to do is google Lamar Football and
you're gonna find Lamarcardinals dot com and go there to
be able to get tickets so there's nothing to it.
Coach Pete Rosamondo, thank you so much for being on
the show. Can't wait for this season and I'll be
(11:56):
seeing you soon. Thank you, Roy, how can you saying
you too? We are back with the Roy with the
show here on News Talk five sixty k l V
heard every Sunday noon to one, but it can be
heard anytime on the free iHeartRadio app, Apple podcast and
Android podcast.
Speaker 7 (12:17):
And I have with me Katie Sally. Welcome to the show, Katie. Hi.
Speaker 8 (12:22):
Roy, thank you for having me always love to be
with you on the show.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
Well, I've had you owned for a variety of reasons,
but you and Frank y'all got a new undertaking here.
Speaker 7 (12:33):
Tell people about it.
Speaker 8 (12:34):
We do.
Speaker 9 (12:35):
My husband and I are taking on the second generation
of ownership on for a flagship mel Room and Emporium.
The business is a shipping company. It's been established for
well over thirty years. It started out as just a
small shipping company back in the nineties when there wasn't
(12:57):
a FedEx or a UPS store on every corner.
Speaker 10 (13:01):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (13:01):
It was one of the only ones back then, and
they had a little bit of retail at the time.
You could get some gift cards and things like that,
and it has grown tremendously to a large retail operation.
Gift shop and we have a Paerrol and jewelry and
food and gourmet items and all of that, and but
(13:22):
we're still doing the shipping at the same time.
Speaker 11 (13:24):
All along.
Speaker 9 (13:25):
We have a location in Beaumont and a location in
Port Arthur. Frank's parents purchased the company in two thousand
and they ran it all this time and in January,
my husband, Frank and I took over and it's been
a lot of fun ever since it's been.
Speaker 8 (13:42):
It's we've we've.
Speaker 9 (13:43):
Been able to put our touch on the store in
terms of retail and the items that we're keeping in
stock and uh and we're still doing. We do some
B two B services as well, such as boltmel. We
do a lot of bulk mail for businesses all over
the area. City of Beaumont is one of our customers
(14:04):
we have. We have quite a bit of customers in
that aspect. So if anybody has large mailings that they
are trying to get out to a large amount of people,
we can print it, stick it, you know, seal it,
stuff it, all of it, take it off of your hands.
Speaker 8 (14:21):
And take care of that for you and get that out.
So it's it's it's been fun. It's been a lot
of fun.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
Well, and when you're doing this, I mean retail, this
is new for both of you to some degree and
concertain and you're you're certainly a people person, so the
people component is not new for you. But uh and
y'all already have been kind of doing some things your
(14:49):
way and introducing some new things. But this, you know,
I would say it's also somewhat of a community. You've
got a lot of regular shoppers. There's always more room
for more regular shoppers.
Speaker 7 (15:02):
But about and then hosting events at your stores.
Speaker 9 (15:07):
Yes, we have such a fabulous client base and that
was the main reason that we decided that we wanted
to go into this endeavor when Frank's parents were ready
to hang it up. The mail room has the most
loyal customers ever and there's a strong large customer base
there that have been shopping at the mail room for
(15:29):
years and years and years. So we could not imagine
letting that go and disappointing our customers. So we've we've
kept that going and our staff is amazing. We're known
for our customer service they do such a great job
and it's been fun to incorporate our touch on it,
and we host regular events such as Majong parties once
a month. This November, we're going to be hosting the
(15:53):
twenty fifth Beaumont Chamber of Commerce Holiday Mixer, which is exciting.
I think it's the long running holiday mixer or mixer
that the Beaumont Chamber has at this time. So we're
excited to keep that tradition going and and and just
seeing what's what's happening. We've we we really look at
our community and try to see what is what are
(16:15):
they wanting, what are they needing, and we follow where
that goes. And and just recently there's been you know,
we were all very familiar with the devastation that happened
in in Kirk County and our dear friends the Bakers,
as we all know, suffered tremendously and their daughter Mary Grace.
(16:36):
We we had a Pink foa doorhannger that we put
that we've allowed out of discounted price for our customers
and one hundred percent of those proceeds are going to
Catholic charities. And we just wrapped up that campaign and
are proud to announce today that our community, because of
the generosity of our.
Speaker 8 (16:54):
Community and the love of that family, they just.
Speaker 9 (16:57):
Really poured out their hearts and support of the Baker family.
And because of that generosity and camaraderie within the community,
we were able to raise ten two hundred and ninety
seven dollars that will be giving to Catholic charities in
Mary Grace's name, and that will be going to all
the organizations that Mary Grace was just absolutely dear to
(17:19):
her heart, such as Saint Anne's Catholic School, things like that.
We are and that's because of the community. We just
have an amazing community and a very loyal customer base,
and we just kind of follow where that goes well.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
And it's certainly a reflection of the family tradition of
being involved in the community, because that's certainly an extra
step that it wasn't necessary, But it's because of your
love for community and your neighbors that y'all did that,
and as a result, Catholic Charity gets benefits from that.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
And it continues.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
Doing the good thing, continues improving despite such a tremendous loss. So,
and let's talk a minute about Majoon because that's kind
of becoming a deal, and I know y'all are kind
of like cutting edge on that. So for people that
have heard about it and had never.
Speaker 7 (18:16):
Played, and I know y'all host these events, tell people
about that.
Speaker 9 (18:20):
Yeah, So Majong is the new bridge or Bunko or
whatever it has always been established. Majong is the new things.
It's a wonderful fun game. And we host monthly events
to where we bring a coach in and we teach
ladies how to play Majong. And we also have a
(18:42):
section of the store. I thank goodness, we have six
thousand square feet. We have room to do this. But
we'll have a section of the store for open play
for those pros that know what they're doing and they
can come and, you know, have a glass of wine
and have some snacks and play Majong together. And then
we have a section of the store for those that
need to learn how to play, and their coaches there
and she's teaching them how to do it.
Speaker 8 (19:02):
And it's it's a it's a blast.
Speaker 9 (19:04):
We're just really enjoying what we're doing out there in
the community and and and love seeing you know, again,
this is something that the community wanted and.
Speaker 7 (19:12):
We were to provide it well. And uh and y'all
even sell those majeh on Oh yes, they have.
Speaker 8 (19:20):
A homage on section.
Speaker 9 (19:22):
We have tiles and racks and we even have cocktail
napkins and and doorhanngers and all kinds of accessories.
Speaker 8 (19:28):
Yeah, Majong's big. We're proud of it.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Well, and I just applaud y'all for being kind of
cutting edge. I know it was getting some traction, but
I think y'all provided an outlet for the community to
learn about it and uh and also uh.
Speaker 9 (19:46):
Making a Alzheimer's Association benefit Majong Night in October, so
stay tuned for more information on that.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
Well.
Speaker 7 (19:55):
And I am not surprised because you're always giving back
and involved in so many of the low charitable organizations,
but uh, you know this is something people need.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
What are y'all's hours there?
Speaker 9 (20:07):
So Monday through Friday ten to six, and then we're
open every Saturday from ten to three, and.
Speaker 8 (20:16):
We're exploring possibly opening.
Speaker 9 (20:19):
On Sundays over the Christmas holidays because it's that's our
busiest season of the year. I mean, we're getting custers
at Christmas, so we're exploring that to see what that
looks like.
Speaker 8 (20:28):
We might we might open up a couple Sundays over Christmas.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
And what are your biggest retail item sellers if you will.
I mean it's hard, as you pointed out, y'all do
bult mail. But y'all are so much more than that.
Speaker 8 (20:42):
We're so much more than just a shipping company. Yes,
we have apparel.
Speaker 9 (20:46):
We have food and gourmet items and candles and cleaning products,
and we have a men's apparel and children's section. And
I mean it's hard to say we have a religious section.
It's we have just about everything. Whatever you need, we've
got it.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
Well, folks, you need to get by there and check
it out. And also you can follow on on Facebook, Yeah,
social media, and now I've seen some of your reels
and where you showcase some things as well.
Speaker 8 (21:14):
Yeah, Flagship mail Room follow us there.
Speaker 9 (21:16):
And Roy, thank you so much for the opportunity to
promote our small business. We really look forward to these
interviews with you, and to be able to showcase our
own business is just a special treat.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
So thank you well.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
And it's such a tribute to Gary and Terry Sally
and I know Gary passed this year and this is
keeping the business alive, but also it's meeting a need
in the community and it's a fun place to shop
and whenever I go, I always see people I know,
so that's one of the great things about.
Speaker 7 (21:50):
Living in an area our size. So, Katie, Sally the
flagship mail Room and Emporium, thank you so much for
being on the show.
Speaker 8 (22:00):
Thank you, Ray Bob.
Speaker 7 (22:05):

any part of this show, you can always download the
free iHeart Radio app, stream the show live wherever you are,
or catch this show or any of the shows in their.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
Entirety on podcast on iHeart Apple podcast and Android podcasts.
Speaker 7 (22:26):
Andy, I have with me David Marcel, who's been on before,
always giving back to the community. And you've got a
golf tournament fundraiser coming up here and tell people about it.
I've had you on before, but we it's coming up
here in September, and it's time to get all the
teams signed up.
Speaker 12 (22:45):
Yes, sir, we almost getting that.
Speaker 13 (22:47):
Roy September nineteenth, it's going to be at Babes of
Harry's golf Course in Port Author looking for all golf responses.
Everybody we can get out there is to benefit my
Son's Sick of Self Foundation. Just launched this foundation. It's
gonna be uh, it's gonna be nice. We're trying to
get about hopefully we have about one hundred people out
there if possible. And uh so we're still looking for
(23:09):
golfers and sponsors. So if anybody want to join in,
let us know, well.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
And we're gonna talk how to do that and where
they can find the information. But I want you to
tell people a little bit about the foundation, how it
came about, because it just speaks to your heart and
and how you're always pouring back into the community and
uh and I I are I applaud that actually so,
but I want people to know about what the founder,
(23:38):
why you created it, and what it does.
Speaker 13 (23:41):
Yeah, it's been it's been about a ten year journey
brought it. I've been trying to get it it. Uh created,
the foundation created and uh my son was born with
sickle seal disease. And I just watched the pain that
he went through coming up and still go through nowadays.
And I just it's just spent some of my heart
that I want to give back and help other kids
with for sell, A lot of kids are unfortunate. So
(24:02):
what our foundation is going to do is every year
we're going to give away two scholarships to kids with
sick of SEALE. So they're going to write in an
essay and we'll pick from there two kids every year
and help him go to college. So for the first year,
Matthew was a senior this year, so even having him
right he right in on his own foundation, so he's
(24:24):
not guaranteed the scholarship yet. But so that's that's that's
what we are focusing on Roy and trying to get
it going and hopefully we can go from there. Like
I say, I guess Matthew was about seven when I
when it came on my heart to do the foundation.
I've been working and working and finally finally got it going. Man,
after all these years. He just turned seventeen, so it
(24:47):
took us about a ten year journey to get it going.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
Yeah, foundations aren't easy to get off the ground. And
but with that passion that you have, and you've certainly
seen the challenges that Matthew's gone through, and you know
that this is just you know, across America and UH
and in encouraging uh, young people and to be able
(25:14):
to talk about their story, but also to continue their
education exactly.
Speaker 13 (25:18):
Yeah, And like I said, a lot of people less fortunate,
they really want to go to college, that need scholarship,
need help, and a lot of people suffer through cycle
seal disease and uh, it's like I said, it's so
painful that they miss a whole lot of school, so
that that that hurts hurts a lot also. But we've
been real fortunate that Matthew has only had maybe one
(25:38):
or two sick of sealed crisis per year, so we've
been real fortunate. He uh, he hadn't midd school a
whole lot. We watched it go through the pain. But
for missing school, he's been pretty good on that side.
When he first started school, they heemeatologist told us that
he would miss a whole lot of school. But thank god,
he's been pretty pretty well and able to catch at
(25:59):
least no. Hty percent of the year every year.
Speaker 11 (26:03):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
And for people that aren't that familiar with sickle cell,
I would say most people have heard of it, but
you know, for the peoples that it hadn't touched their lives,
they don't know anybody. Can you explain a little bit
about the disease.
Speaker 12 (26:17):
Yeah, sickle cell is a blood disease.
Speaker 13 (26:19):
It's uh it like your blood sickles in your bodies
feel like you might have a Charlie Horse all.
Speaker 12 (26:26):
Through your body the way feel your blood sickles up.
Speaker 13 (26:29):
And uh, it's real painful.
Speaker 12 (26:32):
Man.
Speaker 13 (26:32):
I have seen many nights of him having a rush
him to Texas children where he can't can't even see still,
just crying and crying. And but it's just a it's
a it's a rare blood disease. He has type S
and it's it's two different types of sickle cell. He
has the worst one. So uh, like I said, we've
(26:54):
just been real blessed man too to have him healthy
as he has been, and you know, been having one
or two crisis a year.
Speaker 12 (27:01):
But is A is a rare disease. That's terrible.
Speaker 13 (27:04):
It's no cure for it, and uh hopefully one day
they have a cure for it.
Speaker 2 (27:11):
So when you get diagnosed with it, basically it becomes, uh,
you you manage the disease.
Speaker 7 (27:18):
Currently.
Speaker 13 (27:19):
Yeah, yeah, we found out he had it about he
was a man. Actually his first checkup is a hereditary disease,
and I didn't know I had it on my I
didn't know I had to trade. My wife knew she
had the trade already. I never really went to the
doctor's coming up, so I didn't know I had to trade.
So I kind of done some research and found out
it was on my dad's side of the family, and
(27:40):
a few people had it on his side. And but
I say, it's an hereditary disease that you can't get
rid of. And uh, he's on some hydroxy urea, which
is some cancer cancer medicine, and uh he's been maintaining
with that for about five six years.
Speaker 12 (27:56):
But it helped out a whole lot.
Speaker 3 (28:00):
Well.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
And so clearly there's a real need there and it
touches a lot of families lives. Tell people about you know,
we know the tournament's coming up on September nineteenth, made
saharious golf turn golf course. Excuse me, So how do
people go about finding out if they want a sponsor,
(28:22):
if they want a team. You know, there's more than
one way to participate, and you can just make a donation.
If you can't play golf that.
Speaker 12 (28:32):
Day, yeah you can.
Speaker 13 (28:34):
So what we're doing is for one player seventy five
dollars for a team of forres three hundred. We have
five different sponsorships. We have the whole sponsor which is
one hundred and twenty five dollars. Then we have the Bronze, Silver, Gold,
and Platinum package which is three hundred, six hundred, nine
hundred and twelve hundred. So we have a lot of
(28:55):
different ways. Like I said, if you don't want to play,
we have five different sponsorships and it's Matthewswings dot org.
You could just go to Matthews Wings dot org and
have all the different packages on there and you can
sign up whether you want to play or don't.
Speaker 7 (29:08):
They well, and that's that's exactly right.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
You could participate through a sponsorship plan or just make
a donation to the foundation as well.
Speaker 7 (29:19):
And uh, you know, and you can get more information there.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
But uh, you know, there's a lot of golfers out
there and this is for a great cause to be
able to come together. So if you have a business
or you just have an organization, you can put together
a team and it's usually not too hard to get
golfers to.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
Be willing to play.
Speaker 13 (29:44):
Yeah, and even if you don't have a whole if
you don't have a team, you don't have three other
guys that play, which you could just come out and
we'll put you on the team. I have two of
my friends called me and they was like, man, I
don't I don't have anybody to play with. I was like,
just come on, I paid the seventy five dollars for
one person. That will put you on the team. You
have fun. Everybody's gonna be good and friendly. So we're
gonna have drinks, food giveaways. I have swag bags with
(30:09):
different prizes in them, and we're gonna're gonna have a
good time. It's gonna be real nice. It's gonna start
off at eight o'clock. Our registration at seven thirty. UH
shotgun at eight, so we should be finished by one
o'clock or so. And Uh, we got the Zidi Cole coming,
We got the we got the Exytico August sixteenth, UH
step Rito and Brian Jack. We have Trio City Car Show,
(30:32):
which is gonna be the day after the golf tournament.
That's September to twenty at Pleasure Island. So we have
a lot going on, man. UH trying to get everybody out.
Speaker 7 (30:44):
Well and do y'all have a Facebook page as well
as the website.
Speaker 13 (30:49):
Yeah, we have a Facebook page and for matthews Wings,
and we have one for Human Door also for so
the Zydi cod and h Trio City Car show will
be on the Human Door page. But for Matthews we
do have a Facebook and Instagram also, so all the
information of everything I'm doing is gonna be the on
Matthews' Wings or the Human Door Human Door pat x
(31:09):
on Instagram, at Facebook, and we're about a.
Speaker 7 (31:13):
Man it out tell people where the humid door is.
Speaker 13 (31:15):
Human Door sixteen forty five Jefferson Drive. We open seven
days a week.
Speaker 7 (31:23):
For people that hadn't been there, give a little overview.
We got about thirty seconds.
Speaker 13 (31:27):
We have over two or three hundred different cigars to smoke.
We have a full bar. We have live entertainment on
weekends or DJ on weekends.
Speaker 12 (31:37):
Either DJ or live entertainment every weekend.
Speaker 13 (31:39):
We open at two o'clock every day when Saturdays and
Fridays and Saturdays we open until one thirty.
Speaker 12 (31:47):
All other days we close eleven and twelve.
Speaker 13 (31:49):

Speaker 2 (32:00):
Thank you so much for all you do in the community,
and I look forward to hearing about the success of
the tournament.
Speaker 13 (32:06):
Appreciate you, Roy, and thank you again for everything you
do for men. Congratulations again on being the mayor of
Beau Mighty and you're doing a great job.
Speaker 1 (32:15):
Thank you, sir.
Speaker 12 (32:16):
I appreciate thank you.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
I'm back with the Roy West Show here on News
Talk five sixty k lv I and I have with
me Molly Moore with the Natures River Festival.
Speaker 7 (32:30):
Welcome back to the show, Molly.
Speaker 14 (32:32):
Thank you for having me.
Speaker 7 (32:34):
It's a pleasure.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
And Nature's River Festival's been around how many years now?
Speaker 7 (32:39):
How many decades?
Speaker 11 (32:40):
I should say, Well, we're in the seventy eighth year,
so I mean we're seven decades a mistake.
Speaker 7 (32:48):
Yeah, it's been a long time.
Speaker 2 (32:49):
And I know when I was a senior in high school,
I was an escort, which I won't say that was
what was that forty six years ago?
Speaker 7 (32:58):
Wow, that's a long long time ago. But and I've
been to many before and since, and this season there
will be another Nature's River Festival. And let's talk a
little bit, we're going to talk about how people can
get involved, but also a little overview of what the
Nature for River Festival is.
Speaker 14 (33:19):
Well.
Speaker 11 (33:19):
Registration has just opened and you can go to our
website Naturesriverfestival dot com and on there there's an overview
of what everything is about, the fees, about what it
means to be a princess or an escort, a duchess
or a duchess escort. And then they also have a
registration forms that are open and live. So if you
know this is something you want to participate in, those
(33:41):
registration forms are open for you.
Speaker 14 (33:43):
To fill out.
Speaker 11 (33:44):
And once we get through the fall, our deadline for
that is November first for princesses and escorts and duchesses
and duchess escorts and then we'll start all the events well.
Speaker 2 (33:59):
And so this is Nature's River Festival was set. It
was always intended for kids in high school. Give a
little bit of background on the purpose of well, it.
Speaker 11 (34:12):
Got started back in nineteen forty nine and it was
a bunch of our community leaders that wanted to shine
a light on our community at Beaumont, Texas, but also
the surrounding areas and to focus this festival around the youth.
So to participate as a princess or an escort, they
look towards kids that are seniors. So to be a princess,
(34:32):
you have to be a senior. And then the princess
asks an escort to escort them in the festival, and
we hope that that's a senior as well.
Speaker 14 (34:42):
And then duchesses can be juniors or seniors.
Speaker 11 (34:45):
And duchesses are people who don't live in Beaumont or
go to a Beaumont school, and princesses are.
Speaker 14 (34:52):
People who live in Beaumont or go to a Beaumont school.
So we really want to focus on the youth.
Speaker 11 (34:57):
It's a great way to network, it's a great way
to get to know your surrounding area as well as
all the things that Buwant has to offer.
Speaker 2 (35:06):
Well, and it certainly teaches these teaches young people a
lot of soft skills too, because there's a lot of
personal interaction, and I think in today's world this is
even more important because oftentimes people live in this digital
world a little bit too much, and this teaches you
how to relate to people face to face. And besides
(35:28):
having the experience, it also y'all help teach the kids
through this process as well.
Speaker 11 (35:36):
Yes, and one of my favorite things about the Natures
Festival is that it's family friendly. And so for these
seniors who are about to go off to college or
stay in the community and go to college, but you know,
leave their family home, it's a great way for them
to kind of have an end cap to their year
where they can celebrate their child, their young young son
or young daughter before they go off to go to
(35:58):
their next chapter in life. So it's really neat to
see these families come together. They get to get dressed up,
they get to go to these different events. We have
some casual events like our five k or our events
like King's Arrival, but then it all comes together at
the Coronation Ball and everybody just gets to be together
and celebrate their child and it's really great to see.
Speaker 14 (36:21):
So I've really enjoyed that as the director to see
through the years.
Speaker 11 (36:25):
And one thing that we're really proud of too, is
that we also are able to provide nine scholarships to participants,
and this year we're able to grow our scholarships and so.
Speaker 14 (36:38):
We're going to be able to give a little bit
more money to each one of the people who get
one of our board scholarships, which we're very proud of.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
That is incredible. And then the email. I mean, the
website is Nachusriverfestival dot com, so it's super easy and
on it it tells you the main dates and you know,
this is a community wide event, so it certainly focuses
(37:07):
on our youth, but the community gets to come out
and enjoy the experience with them.
Speaker 11 (37:13):
Yes, I mean, we love that about the Nature Festival
as well. One of our biggest events is our parade
that we have downtown Beaumont, and that's for the entire
community to be involved, as well as the coronation and
the ball.
Speaker 14 (37:25):
I mean, it's a public event.
Speaker 11 (37:27):
Anybody can buy tickets to it, and so all of
that information will be on our website when we open
up ticket sales, but those dates are on there.
Speaker 14 (37:36):
So if you are.
Speaker 11 (37:37):
Interested in coming to our parade or any of our
events that are public there, it's going to be on
our website on the dates for seventy eight.
Speaker 2 (37:47):
Well, and this is and y'all visit the schools throughout
the year as well, Is that correct?
Speaker 11 (37:56):
Yes, So that we start recruiting just to to reach
out to some of the students that may not know
that Najor.
Speaker 14 (38:03):
Jury Festival is available to them.
Speaker 11 (38:05):
So we go and recruit to the different high schools
that are local, and then we also try to reach
out and get to the schools that are surrounding Beaumont,
just to give them our information and to know that
we are a festival available to them if they want
to be involved.
Speaker 2 (38:23):
Well, I know that it is an experience of a
lifetime and certainly.
Speaker 7 (38:30):
And it seemed to have grown over the decades in
terms of participation. I know last year seem larger than
I remember them.
Speaker 14 (38:40):
Yes, we have grown. There's times where we're.
Speaker 11 (38:44):
We have a lot of kids involved. Back when I
was in it, that was in two thousand and two,
we had quite a few people involved, and so it
ebbs and flows. But we're really proud of where we
are right now. And if you're interested, anybody can reach
out to me at our Nhture Festival office. The number
is on our website. There's also a Princess and Duchess
(39:05):
informational form and escort form on the website, so a
lot of that information is there just about being involved
in what it includes. So I would say just peruse
our website and you'll learn a lot about us. But
we're really looking forward to a great year. We have
great leadership Emily Wheelers our social chair, and Zach Styles
as our president, and they're really going to spearhead this
(39:27):
year and.
Speaker 14 (39:28):
They have a lot of exciting ideas and I'm thankful
to be a part of it.
Speaker 7 (39:33):
Well, I'm looking forward to another wonderful the seventy eighth
Nature's River Festival, and registration is online. All the dates
are online and if you don't have a young person
that's going to be participating, you can still come around
enjoy the experience from the parade, through the through the
(39:58):
different street party as well as the coronation.
Speaker 12 (40:01):
And the ball.
Speaker 14 (40:02):
Yes, we're looking forward to a great year.
Speaker 7 (40:06):
Well, Molly, I want to thank you again and also
for working so hard in the community getting the word
out if this is something that makes Beaumont a better
place to be and I'm grateful for it as well.
Speaker 14 (40:18):
So thank you well, Thank you Mayor West. I appreciate you, see.
Speaker 7 (40:22):
You see bye bye bye, folks.
Speaker 2 (40:25):

Dave Marcell who's hosting Matthew's Wings Empowering Scholars golf tournament.
(41:12):
It is a fundraiser for sickle cell anemia and his
son was diagnosed with sickle cell and so it is
a passion project to his and he wants to serve
kids that are challenged with this disease. And then we
had Katie Selly, one of her and her husband have
purchased the Flagship Mailroom and Emporium from Frank's parents and
(41:38):
it has been going on for over thirty years and
they are honored to carry on the tradition.
Speaker 7 (41:44):
Be sure to check them out over.
Speaker 1 (41:45):
On Dallan Road.
Speaker 7 (41:47):
Then I visited with Molly Moore of the Nature's River
Festival and She was talking about this coming year's at
Nature's River Festival, which begins right now.
Speaker 2 (41:57):
This is the time that duchess's and princesses sign up
to be a part of it, as well as the escorts.
Speaker 7 (42:05):
The main events are in April. You can go to
their website at Natus River Festival for more information and
folks always tune in to the Roy West Show for
what's happening locally here in Beaumont in Southeast Texas. And
until we talk again, God bless you all.
