Speaker 1 (00:00):
Also have an amazing program here in the studio at KLVI. Today,
we have some amazing guests that are going to share
with you all kinds of things. But I also want
to make you aware of open houses that are going
on for us over in Lumberton. In the Woosley Palms edition,
we have two two four Cody, two three one Cody.
(00:21):
So hey, you just go down one street, two houses
on the same street, and then one block over two
three to one Cocoa Palms and they are open for
you to go take a look at those new construction properties.
And with us on the line is Jessica well Born.
Jessica is one of our buyer's agents on our team.
She's a proud mom of four and a grandmother of three,
(00:42):
and she's lived in Southeast Texas a very long time.
She's been a realtor with us for about six years,
making home dreams come true with our company, and she's
passionate about listening to her buyers and helping them find
a house, not just a house, a home. She is
incredibly nurturing. I'll tell you she was a she graduated
(01:06):
with a nursing degree and so she has that heart
of service that heart of nurturing, that heart of wanting
to help others, and bringing that to real estate has
been one of the things I love about Jessica. Jessica,
are you on the line. I am here, hey, Jessica,
So tell me a little bit about the house where
(01:26):
you are at two two four Cody Lane there in Lumberton.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
Absolutely, thanks for checking in. It is a gorgeous day.
This house is four bedrooms, three and a half bath,
and its three car garage and it is lovely. That's
all I can say. I don't know if it's the
day that's making it even more beautiful. All the natural
light coming in through the windows. It is just it's wonderful.
(01:52):
You definitely need to see it with your own eyes.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
Yeah, it's one of those that has a beautiful open concept,
I mean, and that kitchen is amazing, it is.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
I love that it's got these beautiful wood floors. Like
you said, you walk in the front door, you can
see out the backyard in all the windows and it's
just it's ready, you know, for someone to come and
fill it up, make.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
It their own.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
It is all on one floor. That is one of
my favorite parts about it too.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
No stairs.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Yeah, you and I are aging a little bit, so
those one story homes mean a lot to us, don't they.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Yeah, carrion laundry upstairs is not my favorite.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Tak Yeah, I completely did it. When they're when you're younger,
it's it seems fun.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
Listen.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
When I was younger, I thought a two story house
would be amazing. But now that I have grandchildren and
all the aches and pains that come with being a grandmother,
it makes it a little harder. Well, Jessica, I'm so
excited that you're out there at the Cody Lane property
and that is over three thousand square feet and that
is a Lindy Merrill with ll Meryll Enterprises. So go
(02:58):
check that out. Say hi to Jessica and she may
have a prize for those who stop by. You're going
to have a drawing later today, aren't you, Jessica.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Absolutely. We've got a few gift cards to give out
from so to Go, so come in, sign in and
you know, enter a chance to win.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Yeah, winter the winner will get a twenty dollars gift
card to SO to Go and right there in Lumberton.
So thanks for giving us the information, Jessica, and hopefully
you'll have lots of people stop in to say.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Hi, absolutely have funks.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Also with us today is Mary Pool and Mary is
a volunteer with the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce and
she we're shifting gears because we really need to get
get this information about what's going on with the chamber.
Because this is a luncheon, Mary, I think no one
should miss, especially if you're in business, because this is
(03:54):
focus on local business membership luncheon. And when we say
Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce, that doesn't just include Beaumont, right,
that's correct.
Speaker 5 (04:03):
We are here for all business in Southeast Texas. And
I'm excited to be here today, Dana, So thanks for
having me in. If you are looking for a place
to volunteer, the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce is looking
for you and we're always open for business. But today
I'm here to talk to you about an upcoming luncheon
that's going to be on April twenty fourth. The Greater
Beaumont Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce it's upcoming
(04:26):
focus on Business Membership luncheon. The exciting thing about this
is it's hosted by Lamar Institute of Technology, for those
of you that don't know that name LIT and again
it's on Thursday, April twenty fourth. It'll take place at
the Paul and Connie Souoe Multi Purpose Center on the
LT campus. And if you guys have not been out
(04:47):
to see the exciting renovations at LT, believe me, on
a day like today, when you go out to Lumberton
to look at these homes, swing by LT and look
at the campus, it is absolutely.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Amazing, amazing outside as well.
Speaker 5 (05:01):
Yeah, and yes, we're so grateful to have Sid Valentine
as the president of that organization. The interesting thing about
this luncheon, the spotlight on the future of Workforce Development
and Industry Partnership is doctor Valentine.
Speaker 6 (05:15):
You know, a lot of.
Speaker 5 (05:15):
Us have kids, and a lot of us have kids
that don't want to go to school for four years.
And that's okay because we have LT right here in
Southeast Texas. This luncheon is going to address how LT
can bring the gap between education and industry. Everybody who
lives here for any length of time or is even
a newcomer, can see that this town is exploding with
(05:35):
industry and the future of technology and education and business
collaboration is right here at lt SO as we grow
and evolve, the partnership between education and industry plays a
huge role in equipping our students with the skills necessary
to thrive in this ever changing economy. Seriously, you can't
drive to Mid County or Lumberton for dinner without passing construction.
(06:00):
Every one of those facilities needs welders, carpenters, air conditioning people, fireman.
All of these things are available right at LIT. And
if you're not aware of what LI can do for you,
your family, children or grandchildren, you need to come to
this luncheon again. It's on April twenty fourth. It'sa at
the LED Multipurpose Center. It is being sponsored and we're
(06:22):
so grateful for our sponsors, Common Sense Credit Union. If
you have not done business with them, I encourage you
to do so. They're a huge community sponsor. Doors will
open at eleven am and the program starts at eleven thirty.

place to worship With easter coming, UP i wanted you
to give some of the times and information about What
praise is offering for Their easter. Services AND i know
you Have Good, Friday saturday And, sunday so talk a
little bit about what's going on At praise this coming next.
Speaker 7 (10:18):
Weekend, absolutely thank You dane for having me and for
everybody who is interested in coming to An easter service
and you're trying to figure, out like what is this
all going to be, about or you know you have
some basic experience of what An easter service, is we
actually want to do something before. That we have A
Good Friday experience which is On april. Eighteenth there's about
(10:39):
sixty time slots for people to sign. Up but it
is an immersive guided walkthrough where you get a chance
to walk through part Of jesus' last. Days you're going
to go into The passover, table then The garden Of,
goosemite and eventually The, cross and then it will culminate
with some worship and an opportunity to do. Communion so
(10:59):
we have great actors who are going to be. There
they're going to be From roman guards To judas And
jesus And peter himself who will Deny. Jesus so it's
a really great, opportunity and it's aged from three years
old and up and we do have childcare for those
that are under that. Age so and it's really easy
to go ahead and. Register if you go To Praise
(11:21):
church DOT, tv you can actually register for The Good Friday.
Experience you don't have to be a member Of praise to.
Come we encourage everybody to. Come it's a really great
moment to really think about what is it That jesus went,
Through and so we did this immersive experience because we
want that coin drop. Moment we wanted to go from
the head to the heart to understand part of what
(11:43):
it is that he experienced during his time here on.
Earth so we're excited for. That but we also followed

a great opportunity to do. That AND i haven't registered
for the one On. Friday the. Good i've got to
get that registered because you said you only have about fifty.
Speaker 7 (12:18):
These slots, open but they accommodate twenty people Per. Slotkay
we had as of Like, monday there was already five
hundred people that were, Registered so we're expecting over one
thousand people to come through This Good friday experience and
it averages a round an hour by the time you
go through each of the different stages and then finish
up with. Worship SO i encourage you definitely register because
(12:42):
there are about i'd say about fourteen or fifteen time
SLOTS i looked at that are already.

Speaker 7 (13:03):
Us, YEAH i just want to throw out there to everybody.
Else what we've been doing On sundays is the people
in his. Story so we initially started With noah and
we've gone through different biblical characters leading up To. Jesus
so This, sunday if you're even interested in getting a
sense of what that was, like we're going to be
going Through john The baptist and how it leads into
the culmination of The christian faith and The messiah coming
(13:25):
And jesus being. Here so we encourage everybody to come
on out and if you want to check out the previous,
ones they're all on YouTube and you can take a
look at what we've had from LIKE i, Said, Noah,
Abraham Isaac, Jacob Isaac, Jacob joshua and so on all
the way through To john The.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Baptist, yeah AND i have enjoyed that sermon series so
much because it's been focusing on the people and what
they did and How god used. Them it's been. Amazing
and if you want to come, tomorrow you can come

absolutely love. It and speaking about family, experiences most of you,
know my daughter also works with me at my. Office
(14:46):
she's the broker associate At Dana simmons Real estate and
she is on the line because she is at two
three One Coco. Palm you, Know denay is a woman
of many talents and. Passions she has a master degree
in speech pathology From Lamar, university so she really appreciates
the power of. Communication but her journey didn't stop. There
(15:09):
she is also a seasoned real estate. Professional she's been
with well actively had a license for about ten, years
but you, know she grew up with me And i've
done this about thirty, years so she's really been in
the real estate business for about thirty years as. Well, So,
denay are you on the, Line, yes, ma'am can you hear?
ME i, can and so glad that you joined us
(15:31):
AND i wanted you to give everyone a little bit
of information about the two thirty One Coco palm.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
Property, yeah So i'm here at two three One Cocoa
palms and it's absolutely. Gorgeous this home was built by Ih,
holmes who is a great. Builder and there's so many
amazing features in this. Home through the hard, surfaces, throughout
gorgeous kitchen with gas, appliance sove, top a gorgeous. Backyard
(15:58):
on this beautiful, day everyone should be outside. Today and
it's just so many great. Features it's four, bedrooms three
baths and amenities.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
Galore, WELL i love that. HOUSE i love the big
island that they have in, there and how open it
is to the, kitchen the breakfast and the den where
it's a great space to entertain for The easter holidays coming.
Speaker 3 (16:23):
Up, yes and the brick. Fireplace it's just a gorgeous
feature as, well with this huge quartz. Island BUT i
will have to tell you my. FAVORITE i guess it's
the mom slash home. Cooker and me my favorite feature
is that there are plugs in the, pantry so it's
amazing to be able to put your big appliances you
(16:45):
don't want out in your kitchen in your pantry and
it has electricity already there for you as.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
A space for. It they thought of everything. Space, yeah,
well they run two thirty One Cocoa. Palm They're Woosley
palms In, lumberton and see you today and take a
look at that property for. Yourself and while you're, there
register because we're giving away so To go gift. Cards
so To go is a new well you know, What,
(17:13):
Kimball you're going to have to explain what so To
go is to everybody in the next. Segment so you're
not going to want to go. Away stay with. Us
we'll be right. Back this is The Dana Simmons. Show welcome.
Back This Dana simmons and we are hosting open houses This.
Saturday so if you were out and about and you
want to run by In lumberton at two two Four Cody,
(17:35):
lane two three One Cocoa palms and two three to
One Cody. Lane they're In Woosley palms that they're at
the back of the. Neighborhood it's the brand new homes
that are going up over. There but once you're out,
there you're going to want to go ahead and go
grab something to drink while you're there In, lumberton, Right
SO i think you should run out to so To
(17:55):
go and with us is Kimball, ostagard and he is
going to talk to us a little about what Is Soda, Go.
Speaker 4 (18:02):
Dana it is so good to be on here with.
You so so To go just opened. UP i Think
january twenty third is our opening, dates so we're not
even open three, months but it has been a. Whirlwind
we're excited to be, open AND i can say pretty
definitively we have the best soda In Southeast texas and
we're we're really excited to bring that To. Lumberton we've got,
(18:25):
Soda we've got water based. Drinks IF i know that
there's some non soda drinkers out, There we've got, lemonades
we've got energy drinks as, well and then some bites
you go along with, that some pretzel, bites some. Cookies
is it's a great.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
Place great place to go and just grab a quick
little nugget before you're heading out to The Big, thicket
which we're going to talk about here in just a little.
While so tell. ME i want to hear how this came.
About how did you get to the point that you,
said you, KNOW i want to bring a soda go To.
Speaker 4 (18:54):
Lumberton that's a great. Question SO i came down, here
as many people come down here to see these scs
to do to be in the oil, industry and so
came down. Here not exactly a direct, transition but my
wife AND i had wanted to open a business for
a long time AND i wanted to open a. Business
she loved, soda and so we kind of just married
the two and we were, like you, know we could
(19:15):
find something to, franchise but we really want to build
this our. Own so this is this is the only
so to go that. Exists this is a PRETTY i,
mean there aren't a whole lot of people in the
world who get to try us so to go, Out
so it's a pretty, fun unique. Experience and we came
we spent months just sitting in our kitchen building flavor
combinations and so we have tested everything from the ground
(19:37):
up and really put together an incredible.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
Menu well that is entrepreneurship at its, best because you,
know for most people who are Thinking i'm going to
open a, business the first thing they do is they
start thinking about what kind of franchises CAN i bring
to the. Area BUT i mean you've started this with
a WHOLE i mean from the, floor with nothing that's.
Speaker 4 (19:57):
Right AND i will say sometimes that starting from the,
floor we thought maybe we should have started with a
franchise a little bit. Quicker but it's been incredible. Experience
IS i will, SAY i know a whole lot more
about a whole lot of things THAN i did two years,
ago or three months, ago or even a week.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
Ago so when did this idea come to? You when
was the, okay let's do sodas and The Soda go
brand was embedded in your mind and you, said, okay
let's do. This how long has that taken for?
Speaker 4 (20:27):
You the idea has probably been around for about five.
Years we then went and filed for AN llc back
in twenty twenty two and didn't open its doors until
twenty twenty. Five so this is a slow build that
then ramped up real. Quick probably close to the mid
twenty twenty four is when we were just really started
hitting the ground running on getting this thing, open and
(20:47):
the idea just kind of over. Time it was kind
of you, know it was laying there at night shooting the,
breeze talking about big ideas that we had and, yeah
just kind of kind of grew from.
Speaker 1 (20:59):
There SO i have a. QUESTION i should have asked
you this ahead of, time But i'm gonna ask you
on the air so everybody in the world can know.
It so are you an? ENGINEER i?
Speaker 8 (21:08):
Am.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Yeah, Okay So i'm, thinking you, know you have that
mindset of putting things together and that had to be
important as you're thinking about connecting you, know all of
the pieces that go. Together so tell me how you
what you brought to the table and what your wife
brought to the table that helped you make this so
successful at this.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
Point, well so my wife's the. Beauty i'm the sad
excuse For braun and she has a degree in, marketing
which really helped just bringing the whole idea of a
business right really to. Fruition and THEN i would, say
WHAT i bring is the ability to see systems and
to grow. That AND i love a good, spreadsheet which
(21:48):
is probably not a super common, thing but, man nothing's
more beautiful THAN i. Excel, well but.
Speaker 1 (21:53):
You need that for successful. BUSINESS i, mean you have
to have all of that to. Work so that's Why i'm, Like,
okay how what did the two of you bring to the.
Speaker 6 (22:00):
TABLE i love.
Speaker 4 (22:01):
That, Yeah, no that's. Right and so We my wife
one time was sat down and she's, like you know
a lot of people think of business like opening up
soda shop is sitting in there making, sodas but really
it's a lot of late nights in front of a,
computer in front of An excel sheet and making sure
that everything works, out all the numbers work. Out and
as we just sat down there and built, that she
could bring this whole idea of what does a business
(22:21):
even look? Like what does how do we need to
market this? Thing how do we need to advertise this?
THING i could, say all, right what do the numbers? Say?
Yeah and then putting that together is help make this a.
Speaker 1 (22:31):
Reality, yeah because you guys really are. Opposite you, know
the engineer side is one brain and then the marketing
and art you know that side is a whole nother.
Brain so now together you have a great. BRAIN i sure. Hope,
so so tell everyone where IS so To?
Speaker 4 (22:44):
Go? So so To go is on the east side Of,
lumberton on the ninety six, side right next To Pizza.
Hut so there's a strip mall and we're right on
the end cap and we have an incredible landlord who
went and put a drive through in forest so you
don't even have to get out of your. Car it
is just the all in one experience. There and so
if you're driving up the ninety six side there is
A Blue wave car. Wash A southern made donuts were right.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
There, okay SO i have to know what is the
top three most popular drinks that you have.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
There so there are two that are far and, away
the number one and two. Drinks one is called The.
Waco so The waco is doctor pepper with vanilla syrup
and coconut. Creamer it's. Incredible that's our top. Drink people love.
It our number two, drink which is actually A i
say wake goes far. Away they're probably a neck and
neck is the buttered. Beer and that's a root beer
based drink that is meant to Mimic Harry potter butter.
(23:36):
Beer it's very good as. Well that. One WE i
was actually there this morning and there was a lady who,
SAID i am hooked on butter. Beer so those two
are the number one and. Two i'd say the third
is Our cca. Cream The Seca cream is coke with
cream and cherry and it's really.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
Good, Okay SO i like like flavored spritzers and, water you,
Know so what are some of your popular waters that
have a little fizz to? Them so fizzy waters for.
Speaker 4 (24:06):
Sure so we've got we call them, refreshers and so
you can get them either fizzy or flat if you
some people just aren't into the. Carbonation, yeah that way
we can. Straight we've Got Strawberry days is just a
strawberry based. Drink we've got the pog which is passion,
fruit orange and. Guava we've got a few and they're
they're great. Too.
Speaker 1 (24:23):
YEAH i am gonna have to head out there today
and try a few of those sofs. Wonderful and for
any of you who are out In lumberton going to
the open houses that are In Woosley, palms you can
sign up to receive A Soda go gift. Card so go,
there check them out and, uh if you win, that
you're still In, lumberton and there you. Are you got
it all in one. Stop so we're going to talk
(24:46):
To megan with The Big Thicket National preserve here in
just a, minute because she has amazing things that you
can do while you're in Hardin county as well and
in The lumberton. Area so don't go, away come right.
Back this is The Dana Simmons. Show welcome. Back this
Is Dana simmons and we are hosting an open house
(25:06):
out in The Wosley palm subdivision. Today head on over
there and take a look at some of those new
construction properties that are absolutely. Gorgeous and while you're, there
go ahead and head over To Soda go and get
you a drink. There they are newly opened there at
six p ninety Seven South maine And. Lumberton go check them,
out see some of the new things that they, have
(25:27):
and taste some of their new. Sodas also with us
today we Have Megan urban and she is the program
manager over business services and the public information officer for
The Big Thicket National. Preserve, Now, megan that is a
treasure in our. Area that is an incredible opportunity for
(25:49):
days like today to be able to go out and
enjoy nature and a host of other. Things SO i
know you have a ton that you can talk to us.
About so let's go ahead and get. Started AND i
want to just say thank you for coming today to
talk about the opportunities that we have BECAUSE i feel
like when you're, local you don't realize what you have
(26:10):
in your own. Backyard you. Know we travel all over
the world to go to or all over the nation
to go to these national, parks and we have one.
Here so go ahead and tell us a little bit
about The Big.
Speaker 6 (26:19):
Thicket, yeah thank you so much for having.
Speaker 8 (26:21):
Me i'd prefer to be, outside you, know on a
trail like any good park. Ranger BUT i also like
to Share Big thicket with not just our out of state,
visitors but also of our local. Visitors you, Know lumberton
is one of the many gateway communities that we consider
for A Big, thicket And lumberton just and all of
the seven counties In Southeast texas that we have not
(26:42):
parts Of Big thicket in sometimes forget that they have
this backyard national park. Site there's four hundred and thirty
Three national park sites all across all fifty, STATES, Us Virgin,
islands ell Of, A It AMERICA, smoa and some people
often forget that when they go Visit yellowstone or they
go to Grain Tea Green, canyon that they also can
come visit A Big thicket and have their own you,
(27:04):
know visitor.
Speaker 6 (27:05):
Experience.
Speaker 8 (27:05):
Here we have our visitor center which is just north
Of coons on A highway sixty, nine and we offer
gosh every it's open every day of the, week and
we have ranger lead, programs so you can if you're
a little nervous about getting out in the, park you
can actually get a ranger lead. Hike you can also
get a ranger lead program or even a ranger lead
paddle along our. Waterways and the coolest thing about this
(27:27):
is it's all. Free you, know you don't have to
pay for somebody to take you out. There you don't
even have to pay to go Visit Big.
Speaker 6 (27:34):
Thicket it is all. Free you.
Speaker 8 (27:36):
Know the really cool thing About Big thicket is that
we were the first national preserve in the, country and
so most people when they go visit a big national park,
site you know there's things that you can't do. There
you can't go, hunting you can't go, fishing you have
to stay on the. Trail, Well Big Thicket we're, like
go wherever you, want make sure you take a map
place we don't want to have to go find too
many loss. Visitors but also during the fall time we
(27:58):
offer free hunting permits and so people can go hunt
on their public, land and then we also offer you,
know ranger lad. Programs LIKE i, mentioned we actually have
a really exciting.
Speaker 6 (28:08):
Program having Next.
Speaker 8 (28:09):
Saturday so Next saturday is the start of The National Park,
week which is nationwide and it starts off With Junior Ranger.
Speaker 6 (28:16):
Day and the past couple of.
Speaker 8 (28:17):
Years we've had a really Fun Junior Ranger day event
where kids can come and adults of course can come
learn what different types of jobs rangers. Have they've got
to dig in the dirt to be an. Archaeologist we
have our fire, trucks things like. That, well this Coming,
saturday we're actually trying something super brand new which is so.
Exciting it's Called Junior Ranger, night and so we're inviting
people out to look through telescopes at the stars and
(28:39):
the moon and all those kind of cool. Things we're
doing a program about bats and how to take care
of bats because they're so important in our. Ecosystem and
there's these great ranger lead walks even happening at that.
Nighttime you can even bring your cool phone and get
a great night sky picture to take back with you.
Speaker 6 (28:55):
And share with. People, so LIKE i, mentioned this is all.
Free you.
Speaker 8 (28:58):
Know it starts Next saturday at The Visitor, center which
is off Of highway sixty. Nine it goes until nine,
o'clock so there's a lot of time to get. Out
if you and any kids that joining you come and
do Our Junior Ranger Night explorer, program they can actually
walk away with a patch as. Well we also have brand,
new fresh off of the printer this, Week Junior ranger,
(29:19):
Books so we've upgraded Our Junior ranger.
Speaker 6 (29:21):
Books you can.
Speaker 8 (29:22):
Come fill out one of those and even get a
nice wood and badge. Too so we have great activities
that are not just for, kids but for. ADULTS i
Mean i've yet to find adult who does not like
A Junior anger program because it just teaches you a little.
Speaker 6 (29:34):
Bit about the great resources we have here at Picck.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
Thicket so that's coming up on this Coming. Saturday and
you said six to. Nine, yep six to. Nine so
what are some of the other things that you guys
have up and coming that you're. OFFERING i love the
fact that you mentioned that it's. Free you, know so
often we think there's just not much to do around,
here but you could go there at least once a
(29:57):
month and see something new and different and enjoy the day.
Season so talk a little bit about the other things
that you offer they are at the.
Speaker 8 (30:04):
Park, yeah so we actually just finished a developing and
we're gonna share with everybody our summer programming. Schedule so
we have this, summer we have some ranger lead, walks
not hikes during the summer time because it's too hot to,
hike but you can still walk walks out to our
pitcher plants and other carnivorous. Plants so we have plants
here In Southeast texas that eat, bugs not photosynthus they
(30:26):
little bit OF pho, census but they do mostly eating,
bugs and so you can go out with a ranger
and learn more about these really cool plants that call
big they get. Home we also have some off the
beaten path hikes and, so AS i, mentioned you can
go off the trail and hike anywhere you. Want people
get a little nervous about. That they want to make
sure they know where they're. Going and so some of
our units that are a little bit less visited by,
(30:47):
hikers Like CanYa lands or even The Lance rosary, unit
we're going to be exploring those with a. Ranger so
you can go out and learn about. That we have
some volunteer trash cleanups happening this. Summer we all love big,
thing and sometimes people love it so much that they
forgot forget to take their trash. Home so we do
volunteer trash, cleanups and we're also doing some volunteer paddle trash,
(31:08):
cleanups so you'll be able to hop in a, boat
go down the creek with a ranger and also pick
up trashes you could go along so our waterways can
stay really nice and. Beautiful we're also doing a free
fishing event coming up on the First saturday In, june
which is The Texas Free Fishing, day so we're gonna
have a free fishing event there as. Well so we're
gonna be very busy. Summer you'll probably see rangers all
(31:30):
over the, park but that's a part of the fund
so we get to really engage with all of our
visitors and hopefully some local visitors come out.
Speaker 4 (31:36):
Too that's.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Awesome and so how many rangers do you have?
Speaker 8 (31:39):
There so right now we have Four Grain green that's
what call our park service staff, rangers and then we
have a whole gaggle of. INTERNS i call them gaggle
because they all kind of meander about and you've got
to get them all going in the right. Direction and
then we also have some really great volunteers that help
support this program as.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
Well and if someone wanted to get more, information they find.
Speaker 6 (32:00):
It, yeah you can either go on our.
Speaker 8 (32:02):
Website if you go to The National Park, service IT'S
nps dot gov and then you look Up Big. Thicket
you can also go on to our social. Media we
put all of our information up, there and then you
can also call the visitor center and that number is
four zero. Nine NOW i totally course blanked, it but
the phone number is on the. Website so there's a
lot of ways to find out. Information of, course come
(32:23):
visit us at the visitor center and we can also
share all that information with.
Speaker 1 (32:26):
You so tell me what are some of the things
there at the visitor center while you're.
Speaker 8 (32:30):
There, Yeah so if you come down to the visitor,
center we have great exhibits that talk about the different
types of ecosystems that are protective Within Big.
Speaker 6 (32:39):
Thicket we actually have four major.
Speaker 8 (32:41):
Eco tones that kind of it all come together At Big,
thicket and then there's multiple smaller ecosystems and so you
can actually learn about the different plants and animals up
until the end of this. Month In, april we actually
have an art show that's being shown in Our discovery,
room and that's art from all across the country from
l elementary through high school students and are in to
(33:02):
kind of showcase the amazingness Of Big. Thicket we also
have a fifteen minute film that really talks about the
history Of Big, thicket why we were set aside to be,
protected the people who came, before the people who are still.
Speaker 6 (33:13):
Here so it's a really nice.
Speaker 8 (33:15):
Building and of course we have a gift shop that you,
can you, know buy all the stuff that says Big
thicket on and take it. Home.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
Yeah you know what's interesting is That i've been to
The Big. Thicket but you know When i've, Been i've
been on school, yes, trips, yep with the. Kids, yeah my,
Kids and so why is? IT i don't think about
it the rest of the.
Speaker 8 (33:34):
Time you, know it is fascinating BECAUSE i started my
career as an education, specialist and SO i would lead
kids on field trips and every every, park no matter
how close or how far it is from a small
town or a big. Town we would have parents who said,
OH i remember coming out here as a. KID i
haven't been out here since, then And i'm, like, well
this Is National. Park sites are set aside to be
(33:56):
protected for. Everybody they are public. Land they're meant to
be there for not just this, generation but future generations as.
Speaker 6 (34:03):
Well and part of that, is you, know we.
Speaker 8 (34:05):
Get to educate, people but we also want people to
remember that, that you, know really this area is set.
Aside it's not for me or for the rangers to be.
There it's for everybody to have a chance to come out.
Explore AND i think that's just one of the most
beautiful THINGS i Think america has ever, done is to
settle outside of these.
Speaker 6 (34:20):
Lands and now it's not just for people who can afford.
Speaker 8 (34:24):
It you, know it's, free you can go explore and
it is really set aside for. Everybody SO i hope
that as people remember That Big thicket is part of you,
know their Backyard National, park that they come. Back we
actually saw a really big increase of visitation DURING covid
because everybody who normally goes elsewhere came to visit us
or they you, know the locals who are Like i'm
going to go vis The ellstone and they're, Like, oh
(34:46):
let's go visit Big. Thicket so we're hoping to keep
that visitation up Up hi and increase that especially with our.
Speaker 1 (34:52):
Locals, yeah and you, know with our world the way it,
is the way we are going one hundred miles an
hour all of the, time it is such a good
thing for just our mental health to get outside and enjoy.
Nature and you guys have it set up so that
you can do. That it's not like you have to be,
(35:12):
wealthy like you, said to go. Somewhere it's free and
it's maintained for. You you don't have to create it
in your own. Backyard you have a beautiful part to
be able to go to and rangers who can guide and.
Direct AND i love it for our. Children you, know
it is a great resource to take our kids to
to help them understand the beauty of nature and what
(35:33):
we have. Here and SO i appreciate you coming and
reminding us of all of the things that we have here.
Locally that's part of the REASON i love doing this
show is because you, know we live, here we work,
here and we forget that we can enjoy things, here
or we forget that we have these things to enjoy.
Here AND i love being able to bring that back
(35:56):
to our listeners to, say oh, yeah forgot about. That
that is a and today is a beautiful. Day so.
Speaker 6 (36:04):
Go head.
Speaker 1 (36:05):
Out you're not gonna kill yourself with the heat today
because it's so beautiful. Outside and get a little, exercise
enjoy a little VITAMIN, d and enjoy the.
Speaker 6 (36:16):
Beauty before they come.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
Out, well that's the one thing that can be, challenging
but you know that's why they make mosquito. Spray. Right, Well,
megan thank you so much for joining. Us and, again
if you have questions about The Big Thicket National, preserve
