Rat. I was arrested in Louisvillenineteen ninety six for public intoxication. I'd
(00:51):
been drinking all day and was prettydrunk when I got arrested. I was
taken to the nearest jail and putin a cell by myself. A cell
was small and dark. There wasa bunk bed, a toilet, and
a sink. The walls were bareand there were no windows. I was
lying in my bunk trying to sleepwhen I heard a noise. It sounded
(01:15):
like something was scratching at the wall. I sat up and listened, and
a noise came again. Sounded likesomething was trying to get in. I
got up and went to the wall. I peered through the bars. I
saw a pair of wild eyes attachedto a rat about the size of a
(01:36):
Golden retriever. The rat was staringat me. I froze from a combination
of fear and disbelief. The ratstarted creeping toward me as soon as it
noticed my presence, prompting me tohurry back to my bunk. I huddled
under the cover, shaken. Icould hear the rats scratch at the door
(02:00):
of my cell. I didn't sleepthat night. I just lay there listening
to the creepy animal, wondering whatit would do if it got in.
I told the guards about the ratin the morning. I don't know if
they didn't believe me or merely couldn'tcare less. They said there were no
(02:20):
rats in the jail and wouldn't speakabout it further. But I know what
I saw, and I know itwas real. I've never been so scared
in my life. I spent therest of the day in my cell,
afraid to leave. I didn't eator drink anything. I just sat in
my bunk, staring at the wall. In the evening, I was let
(02:44):
out. I felt relieved to gohome, but was still shaken by what
had happened. I never made thesame mistake, had to fear I might
come into contact with that four leggedfreak again. Even though I know most
are harmless, I'm still afraid ofrats. I'll never forget that night and
a dog sized rat that stared atme through the bars. I've often wondered
(03:07):
what would have happened if the rathad entered my cell. Would it have
attacked me? I don't know,but I'm glad I didn't find out.
I'm happy I'm still alive. I'venever told anyone about this before, but
I'm telling you now because I thinkmore people should know what's out there.
(03:28):
Be careful, and don't ever forgetthat there are unpredictable things in the dark.
