Speaker 1 (00:03):
Calarogu Shark Media. Hi everyone, I'm Ava, and welcome to
today's five Minutes of Gratitude, where we're celebrating the remarkable
gift we use every day but rarely think about our hands.
Before we begin, I want to mention that if you'd
(00:25):
like to experience these gratitude moments without interruption, you'll find
details about our commercial free version in the show notes.
Have you ever really looked at your hands? This morning?
While typing an email, I pause to really see these
remarkable instruments that serve me so constantly, so reliably, that
(00:46):
I almost forget to marvel at what they can do.
Our hands connect us to the world in ways both
practical and profound. Just in my morning routine, my hands
perform dozens of intricate tasks, turning off the alarm, preparing coffee,
brushing teeth, buttoning a shirt, tying shoelaces, all with a
(01:08):
precision and coordination I completely take for granted until something
as simple as a paper cut reminds me of how
much I depend on their flawless function. I was watching
my friend Marco, a carpenter, work yesterday. His hands moved
with such knowing precision guiding tools and materials with an
(01:28):
intelligence that seemed to bypass conscious thought. My hands know
things my head doesn't, he told me when I commented
on his skill. They've learned patterns. My brain couldn't explain
this embodied knowledge. This wisdom in our fingertips represents decades
of learning that happens below our awareness. Hands carry our
(01:53):
histories in such visible ways. The callouses that show repeated work,
the small scars that mark childhood adventures or cooking mishaps,
the lines increases unique to each person. My grandmother used
to say, you could read someone's life in their hands,
and there's truth in that. Our hands reveal how we've
(02:16):
spent our days, what work has shaped us, what activities
have mattered enough to leave their marks. The language of
hands speaks across cultures. A handshake sealing in agreement, hands
folded in prayer or meditation, hands extended in greeting or assistance,
(02:37):
hands clapping in appreciation or rhythmic participation. Without a word spoken,
our hands communicate intention and emotion in ways universally understood.
I was reminded recently of how precious hand function is
when my neighbor returned home after wrisk surgery. Simple tasks
(03:00):
opening jars, turning door knobs, buttoning shirts suddenly required assistance
or creative adaptation. I never realized how many times a
day I use my hands, she told me, until I
couldn't use one of them fully. This temporary limitation gave
her a new appreciation for abilities she'd previously taken for granted.
(03:25):
Our hands also represent amazing evolutionary engineering. Opposable thumbs that
allow precise gripping, fingertips packed with nerve endings that can
detect microscopic textures, joints that permit both powerful grasping and
delicate manipulation. The hand brain connection that enables us to
(03:46):
perform everything from brain surgery to piano concertos to intricate beadwork,
all with the same basic equipment. Hands connect us to
others in uniquely intimate ways. The comfort of holding someone's hand,
whether a child crossing a street or a partner navigating
life together. The reassurance of a hand on a shoulder
(04:10):
during difficulty, the joy of high fives celebrating success. Our
hands become instruments of connection, offering tangible evidence that we
are not alone in the world. In many traditions, hands
symbolize both giving and receiving. Open hands ready to receive
life's gifts, but also open to share with others. Hands
(04:34):
extended in service, in blessing, in creative work. There's wisdom
in remembering that the same hands that care for our
own needs can reach out to meet the needs of others.
(04:56):
Today's affirmation is my hands are in strurements of both
capability and connection. Take a moment to let these words
settle into your awareness. Our hands represent remarkable capability, allowing
us to manipulate our environment, create beauty, solve problems, and
(05:19):
care for ourselves and others with incredible precision. Think about
how many tasks your hands have already performed today. Likely dozens,
if not hundreds, of small movements that happen so automatically
you hardly notice them. This everyday miracle of coordination and
sensitivity deserves our recognition and appreciation. Remember that gratitude for
(05:45):
physical abilities isn't about comparison or achievement, but about acknowledging
the gift of function we so often take for granted.
Even hands with limitations, hands that experience pain, hands that
are aging. Each pair of hands represents unique abilities and
possibilities for both self care and connection. Let's say our
(06:09):
affirmation together one more time. My hands are instruments of
both capability and connection. Thank you for sharing these moments
of hand awareness with me today. Until next time, May
you find joy in noticing and appreciating these remarkable tools
(06:30):
you carry with you always. This is Ava signing off
from five Minutes of Gratitude, grateful for the countless ways
our hands help us navigate and connect with our world.
