If fifty five karsde talk station. Happy Tuesday, Kevin Gordon
filling in for me tomorrow. I'm off the balance of
the week to enjoy Thanksgiving, and I hope you get
to enjoy Thanksgiving too. And I have James Owen, my
friend from Plump Tye Plumbing, on the phone, to talk
about getting your house ready for winter. But James, welcome
to the morning show, my friend. It's good to have
you on today for some helpful tips.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Good morning, it's great to talk to you.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
Brian Well and I have a personal experience, thankfully it
was not my house, but holiday event we had a
real problem with feminine hygiene products being flushed down the
toilet resulting in a massive, massive clog problem. Again, I'll
leave the names out of it so we will not
implicate the guilty parties. But that's a no no, is

(01:46):
it not?

Speaker 3 (01:48):
For sure? That is one of the things that I
would tell every single person out there. Flushable wipes are
never flushable and all simisene a feminine hiji products should
never be flushing the toilets. So it's a I know
it's one of those things that people will tell you
you can do a D or C. I mean, if

(02:08):
there's something I can tell you that's gonna save you
time and money. Again, don't flush anything down the toilet
except for for toilet paper and usually single fly like
Angel saw something along those lines and the other side
of the coin. Never use draina, guys, never ever. I
might get sued by DRAINO for saying that, but yeah,
I'm just trying to save you, guys thousands of dollars
because I mean, we make we make more money than

(02:30):
we should. But you know, by by you know, going
and fixing what other people have tried to fix with chemicals.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
Yeah, and yeah, really, just Bree, you don't need to
pick on drain any of those chemical drain cleaning products.
They're caustic to the pipes, correct, I mean they melt
the PVC, don't they.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
I mean they have they absolutely have their their their
utility and that they're going to, you know, again, like
you said, coustically dissolve some of the products. But they're
also wearing away and destroying the pipe. So at some
point the pipe will have a problem. And again when
you when you go to to actually fix it, it's

(03:11):
going to be a pretty costier pair. So I'd just
be very cautious whenever using those type of products. They
have their they have their utility. But you know, most
of the time I would say, call a license.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Flummer, call license flomning. They'd be plumb type plumbing uh
seven seven eighty four eighty three seven two seven type
plumb type dot com. What else do we think about
as we approach winter? I think of freezing temperatures, and
I'll knock wood as I say it. I've never had
a problem with a pipe freezing up, but you know,
older homes sometimes, you know pre code, they'll have uh

(03:42):
water pipes that are running on the exterior walls of
a house. Of course, those can freeze up. What do
we need to be thinking about, generally speaking, as the
cold weather come in our way.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
Any type of outdoor faucets, immediately remove your your hose
and any type of doctors from them, make sure the
water is shut off, Maybe run a little bit of
water and then and then make sure it's kind of
blown out if you can. That is the most common
cause of pipes, you know, being burst and having those

(04:15):
types of big problems down the road. Shut off valves
in those areas are also always a smart thing to do.
But that's obviously it's it you know when when it
what it happens, it's too late. It's it's you know,
when you are having repaired have have have shut off
fouls put in those places. Insulation around pipes is always
a good idea getting yourself ready for you know, I

(04:36):
mean it's it's winter, it's cold, Like you said, it's
time to to take care of some of those things
so that you're gonna save yourself lots of time, lots
of headaches, and lots of money by doing some very
very simple things. It's the time of the year as
well where you should probably go and run some bleach
down your down your drains or or whatever it may be.

(04:56):
Bleach from the standpoint of of RGE back systems, those
kind of things to make sure that you're you're killing
any kind of germs or or or things that might
be coming up through those those areas. You just want
to get yourself prepared for the winter. And then when
it gets really cold outside, open up all your all
of your drawers and all of your your areas that

(05:16):
are round pipes, and if you could have a slow
drip going on during really cold periods, you will almost
certainly save yourself thousands of dollars by making some very
very small, you know, adjustments, And you know, sure we're
gonna we're gonna waste a little bit of water in
those situations, but the amount of water that we're gonna

(05:40):
save by the pipe not bursting and then you know,
having you know, thousands of gallons pouring into your home
and the damage and everything else to get along with
it is going to be well worthy to save there.
So just be thoughtful and smart from those sides. But
you know, real quick, Brian too, I wanted to mention, Yeah,
this has been ten years of you and I doing this,

(06:02):
and I think, you know, twenty five or so times
of us get in the air. And I talked to
my team today about you know, Thanksgiving and being so
thankful and thoughtful and the fact that we live in
a world right now where we're constantly looking to the
negatives and we we always feel like we fail and
we're always looking to the next year and the resolutions everything.
I like that we are so blessed and we are

(06:22):
so fortunate to all have each other. And I am
so thankful to you, to the listeners, to everybody, no
matter if you've ever used this or not, I promise
you the world's going to be okay. We have so
many wonderful things to be thankful for, and I am
so thankful for the relationship I've have with you over
the years. I mean, I'm even be able to call
and and and and talk to you about, you know,

(06:43):
legal issues or things like that that we're both attorneys
and just kind of you know, yeah, you know, have
that kind of conversation. It's just it's it's we so
often focus on all the negatives. But but man, we
have so much to be thankful for. Every day's a gift.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
I am pleased, and I I've told people time and
time again, I wouldn't speak for you or anybody else
if I wouldn't recommend to my mom. I know you
take great care of my customers. I know you think
about my reputation when you're working on somebody's house, because
I'm the one that steered them to you, and you're
the one that's making good on the promises that I've
made to my listening audience and providing great customer service

(07:20):
and superior plumbing work at the right price. So I
will thank you and for supporting the show, but for
doing right by my listeners. And it means the world
to me to have that. And it's a beautiful thing
that you thought about being thankful this time of year.
And I know it's pretty obvious since it's Thanksgiving, but
since we're talking about plumbing issues and plumbing problems that
you took a few moments to mention that just warms

(07:41):
my heart to no end. And I truly am appreciative
of you. And of course the work you did for
me in my house, I'll never forget when the chandelier
started rating. I'm like, how in the hell are these
guys going to figure where that is coming from? But
a great job you did, and real quick here. Since
you mentioned for homes that don't have a shut off
valve for the water going outside, uh, that's not an

(08:02):
overly expensive thing to install. I mean, I would like
to if that was me, because I've got shut off
ouves that go out for the ones that go outside.
That would be something I would just go ahead and
call you and get done in advance so I never
had to worry about it again.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
I mean it's it's just like everything else in life.
And I get it. You know, finances are tight sometimes,
you know, you decide to do a D or C
because of the fact that it shangs you here or there.
It's just like anything else. If you if you think
ahead and the person who's in front of you, and
they should be thinking I had too. So if it's
us and and we don't suggest that, or if it's

(08:38):
somebody else and they suggest it and it's and it
sounds crazy expensive, I would always tell you to just
think about, you know, what the long term effect is
going to be, and why that person is making that
suggestion and ask them they I mean, they should be
able to give you an answer.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
But well, you don't have to leave the pipe dripping
slow drip in the wintertime, shut it off on you.
I forget about it till springtime. James Owen plumb Tight Plumbing.
