let's begin.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
When I first started my job in the morgue, I
never expected that I'd be the one to tell a
story about ghosts or spirits. Really I never thought about
whether they existed or not. Frankly, if you were to
asked me whether or not they even exist, I'm pretty
sure I would have said something to the effect I
don't know. Now, I would absolutely tell you spirits exist.

(02:07):
I came to this realization one night while I was
standing next to the remains of a man who'd lost
his life during an automobile accident. If you were to
take one look at him, someone could clearly see he
died when his torso had been crushed. I wish it
were that simple, but my report had to detail the
extent of the damage. Even before I made a single cut,
I turned on the video recorder and did a thorough

(02:28):
inspection of the body, checking for any substances that weren't
supposed to be there. During this time, nothing really seemed
out of the ordinary. I'd done so many of these,
including ones that the average person would consider hard to
look at. Now it almost feels like I'm on autobiolet. Next,
I placed my scalpel against the skin, preparing to make
my first incision of the y cut that we use
to give us the most effective view of the inside

(02:50):
of a person. As soon as the sharp edge broke
through the skin. My entire body felt like I'd been
dunked in a bath of ice cold water. Even though
I couldn't see them, I could fill my hair stand
on end and the goose flush covering every inch of
my body. Instinctively, I took a step back, but the
icy feeling refused to abate. My teeth began to chatter,

(03:10):
and each breath coming from my mouth puffed out of
my mask in small clouds. I looked up to the ceiling,
expecting to see a vent above me, giving me at
least some reason for the strange change in temperature, but
my eyes only found concrete. The nearest vent was almost
twenty feet away, too great a distance for such a
drastic difference. I even look over towards the cold storage

(03:30):
area where the bodies were kept before and after the
autopsy is done, in order to slow the process of
decomposition before they're transferred out. It was the only thing
I could think of that might be causing this, but
it was shut tight. At this point. The only thing
that was greater than the cold was my confusion. I
was standing here feeling like I was freezing to death,
shivering in the middle of the summer, with no reason

(03:51):
to explain what was happening. The cold seemed to be
burrowing all the way to my bones, and my entire
body seemed to be shaking. If I could make my
muscles work, I would have run out of there. Unfortunately,
I was too freaked out to think clearly. When my
hand opened, I dropped the scalpel. I didn't even realize
it happened. At this point. I was so cold, everything
was far past nomb The loud, metallic clank of the

(04:12):
tool hitting the ground snapped me out of my stupor.
But it did something else too. The cold it was
suddenly gone, not slowly, but like all at once. Don't
get me wrong, I was still shivering, but I could
feel the warmth returning to my body. It was almost
five minutes before my teeth stopped clicking together. I felt
close enough to warm to say I was back to

(04:33):
some semblance of normal. The entire time, I tried not
to look at the scalpel, thinking it somehow responsible for
the unexplainable situation i'd found myself. It was hard, though,
and I continued to steal glances at it. The five
minutes of unthawing didn't give me the courage to reach
down and pick it up. Unable to continue my autopsy,
I covered the man up and wheeled the man back

(04:53):
and side cold storage. I went and told my boss
I wasn't feeling well and I was going to take
the rest of the day off. I just wanted to
go home and get a good night's rest and come
back the next day and try it again. Something obviously
was wrong with me, and I didn't want to push it.
The following day, I came back in ready to try
once more to get the autopsy completed. There was no
way I'd have the same thing happen again. Still, I

(05:15):
hesitated a little bit when I went to pick up
the scalpel that still lay on the floor from the
night before. This time, however, when my hand touched the metal,
there was no rush of cold to surround my body.
Setting the tool aside, I went and picked out a
clean one and set it on the metal tray ready
for use. After retrieving the man's body, I reached up
to turn on the video recorder and realized it was
still on. In my haste to leave, I had forgotten

(05:36):
to turn it off. This meant the video on the
computer had to be taking up a huge amount of space,
and I needed to delete it before beginning again. I
opened the folder containing videos and I picked out the
one from the night before. I was just about to
delete it when a sudden bit of curiosity came over me.
I decided to review the footage and see if there
was something that might explain what happened. I fast forwarded
the video through the few minutes where I did my

(05:58):
initial inspection before where I got to the point where
I was about to start cutting. Then I saw something
I will never forget. Right when I pressed the blade
into the skin, a small glowing orb seemed to rise
out of the man's body and hover in the air
for a second. It floated in place for a few seconds,
and I saw myself take a step back away from
the body. Then all of a sudden, the orb flew
right at me and began to quickly circle me as

(06:20):
if it were in orbit. This behavior went on for
a few minutes until I saw myself drop the scalpel.
Then the orbs shot off through the wall behind me
at a high rate of speed. It was the craziest
thing I'd ever seen. Had this orb been the cause
of the bitter cold I felt. Was that even possible?
But most importantly, what was it? I pulled up my
Internet browser and did a quick search for orbs being

(06:41):
recorded on film. Instantly I was inundated with a number
of articles and pictures talking about ghosts. Instantly I was
inundated with a number of articles and pictures talking about
ghosts and spirits manifesting themselves in the form of orbs
that are caught on camera. My first reaction was ghosts,
followed quickly by yeah right. Despite my initial skepticism, I
read one of the articles and it talked about cold spots,

(07:04):
which sent another shiver through me, this time having nothing
to do with a drop in temperature. The more I read,
the more I was drawn in by the subject. By
the time I looked over at the clock, I hadn't
realized an hour had passed. Not only that, but I
was also convinced that I had caught a spirit on
my recording. I was both a little excited and worried
at the same time. What was I supposed to do
if the orb continued to torment me every time I

(07:25):
tried to make a cut. Fortunately that didn't happen. After
flying off the day before, it seemed more than happy
to let me finish my work. To this day, this
is the only instance where I'd caught an ORB in
one of my autopsies. Still, I continue to be on
the lookout for the next one, unsure if it will
actually happen or not.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
