Speaker 1 (00:12):
A few years ago, my aunt, uncle, cousins, and I
all headed out for a long drive from New York
to the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. I was beyond excited,
since this was my first vacation away from my parents
and my sister, who I typically spent most of my
time with. When we arrived at the place where we

(00:34):
were staying, I immediately noticed how unusual it was. From
the outside, it looked ancient and crumbling, but the inside
had been renovated and was ultra modern in fancy. As
soon as I stepped inside, I felt a chill go
right through me. Something about the house just felt wrong,

(00:58):
like there was something evil linger there. I didn't tell
anyone what I'd felt, worried they think I was lying,
but that feeling followed me wherever I went, clinging to
the back of my mind, no matter how much I
tried to shake it off. The first night there, my
cousin and I went to the pool. When we were done,

(01:19):
we headed back to our rooms to change before dinner.
My cousin finished dressing first and went down to the kitchen,
while I stayed in the room doing my hair. As
I was looking in the mirror I saw something move
behind me what looked like a tall, dark figure wearing
a hood over its head. At first I thought I

(01:41):
was seeing things, but when it didn't leave, I knew
I wasn't. I got so freaked out. I was completely
frozen to the spot. I didn't know what to do
but pray that it wouldn't hurt me. I remember clearly
that the figure was standing by my bed, just watching
me through the mirror. It stood there for about a

(02:02):
minute before eventually vanishing through the window. Only after had
it gone did I feel like I could finally breathe again.
Shaken by what I had seen, I opened the door
and hurried down to the kitchen where the others were.
Once again, I didn't tell anyone what had happened because
I didn't want to freak anyone out. Three days passed

(02:27):
and the holiday was going well, but I still couldn't
forget the figure that I'd seen. I hated being in
the room on my own in case it came back.
Nothing happened until the night of the third day. It
must have been in the middle of the night and
everyone was already asleep, when all of the sudden I

(02:47):
heard a huge crash coming from downstairs, as though all
the dishes in the kitchen had fallen and smashed. I
jumped out of bed, both terrified and curious to see
what it was. It was pitch black outside my room,
and although my instincts were telling me to go back
to bed, something else was drawing me forward. As soon

(03:11):
as I stepped into the kitchen, something sharp fell on
my foot and I cried out in pain. My aunt
rushed in a moment later, switching on the light. When
I looked down, there was a huge slash across my ankle.
It was bleeding a lot, and the pain was excruciating,
like nothing I'd felt before. My Aunt was in shock,

(03:35):
mostly because she had no idea what had caused it.
There was nothing on the floor, no knives or plates
or anything sharp that might have slashed my ankle. That's
when I started to feel a sudden pain in my abdomen.
It worked its way up from my waist all the

(03:56):
way up to my neck, until it felt like someone
was trying to strangle me, their hands squeezing the oxygen
from my lungs. I was struggling for breath, trying to
grasp whatever was strangling me, but there was nothing there.
I cried for help, kicking my legs and arms, but

(04:17):
neither my aunt or the rest of my family who
had come in didn't know what to do. Nobody knew
what was happening. Eventually, the pressure eased and I could
breathe again. After it had happened, and I tried to
explain what I'd felt, my uncle told me it had
all been in my head and I was probably just homesick.

(04:40):
He'd never believed in ghosts, but I didn't expect him
to dismiss my experiences so quickly. Instead of arguing, I
simply held back my tears and went to my room.
Laying down in bed. I couldn't sleep. I was too
scared and confused about what had happened. It was around

(05:00):
four a m. When I finally managed to fall asleep
and found myself dreaming. I dreamt of a man wearing
a black mask who tried to choke me. I remember
he was telling me how much he hates me and
wants me to leave his house. I know there was
more to the dream, but I don't remember the rest
of it very clearly. When I woke up the next morning,

(05:23):
I tried to tell myself it had been nothing but
a bad dream and didn't mean anything, but I couldn't
help but feel like it had been more of a
message warning me to leave. I got up and went
to take a shower, but when I took off my
shirt and looked in the mirror, I noticed scratches all

(05:44):
over my stomach and back. I could hardly believe what
I was seeing. There was no explanation for such long,
red welts other than the same entity that had tried
to harm me before. At this point, it was becoming
less of a vacation and more of a nightmare I
was dying to wake up from. I quickly ran out

(06:06):
to my aunt and uncle and showed them the scratches
on my body. I saw the expression on their faces
turn to fear and knew they finally believed me, even
my uncle, but they didn't want to say anything that
might scare me. Instead, my aunt told me not to worry.
Everything would be fine if I kept God in my prayers.

(06:27):
Later that night, after coming home from a long but
fun day at an amusement park, I was dreading going
to bed. I was already expecting something else to happen,
and I was paranoid about every little thing. As I
was laying in bed texting my sister about everything that
had happened, I overheard my aunt and uncle talking in

(06:47):
the room next door. I remember hearing my uncle say
there's something here that's bothering here, something that isn't good.
I'm starting to have bad feelings about this place, to
which my aunt added, I think it's an evil spirit.
My mind went completely blank after that, and I remember

(07:08):
having the horrible urge to commit suicide, but I forced
myself to stay strong. It wasn't going to last forever.
Barely a minute after that, the lamp beside me began
to switch on and off without reason. Terrified, I ran
out of the room to get my aunt. When we
came back five minutes later, the lamp had turned out completely. Surprisingly,

(07:33):
when my aunt tapped it, it turned back on, so
she left me to it and I tried to get
some sleep. A few hours later, in the middle of
the night, I woke up suddenly to a loud bang
in my room. I immediately jumped up and switched on
the light. My room was in complete disarray. My iron

(07:53):
and hair products were all over the floor, the bottles
open and spilling liquid. Everywhere. As I looked at them,
I got a distinct feeling that someone or something was
watching me from the corner of my room. That's when
I heard and felt something breathe right against my ear.

(08:15):
My heart immediately began to pound and my head began
to spin as panic took over, but I forced myself
to stay calm as I got up and went to
sleep on the couch downstairs. Before I knew it, it
was morning again. As soon as I woke up, I
ran to the mirror to check for any new scratches

(08:35):
and found a huge cut running about four inches down
the middle of my stomach. This was deeper than the rest,
and I immediately started crying. I didn't know what to
do at this point. I just wanted to leave this
place and go home. When my aunt saw the new cut,

(08:55):
she felt the same, so we ended up packing everything
up and leaving the vacation early. As I walked out
of the house, relieved to be leaving it behind, I
turned back to look at it one last time, the
house that would always haunt my dreams, and screamed out
to it, I hate you, I swear. As I was

(09:20):
walking away, I heard a deep voice growl back, I
hate you too. As soon as we arrived back home
in New York, everything went back to normal again. I
went about my life as usual and nothing bothered me again.
Even today, I still wonder what really happened at that

(09:42):
house and the entity that haunted it, and why it
seemed to have such a grudge against me. I was
the only one it ever tried to harm, even when
there were five others there with me. I often think
back to that vacation and remember how lucky am I
that things didn't end even worse than they did. Maybe

(10:02):
I'm lucky to even be here. Whenever I tell people
the story, I still get chills just thinking back to it.
It's definitely opened my mind to things that exist beyond
this life. I guess it's true when people say, once
the door to the unknown is open, it can never

(10:23):
be closed.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
