Speaker 1 (00:11):
It happened around midnight the first time I saw something.
The night started out like any other. Nothing was out
of the ordinary, and I had fallen asleep with my
TV on. When I woke during the night, the room
was dark except for the faint light from the empty screen.
I looked around the room with tired eyes when something

(00:33):
caught my attention. Something next to my bed. Featureless, A
figure stood there. Its slim, white body had no curves,
the arms straight lines at its side. My tired, heavy
mind tried to comprehend what was happening, but my thoughts
were blurred and neesthetized. Almost desperately, I focused my eyes

(00:56):
on the figure, getting a closer look. A hood covered
its head, but whenever I would focus my gaze on it,
the body would blur away like an old TV losing
its signal. The figure before me would go fuzzy, forbidding
me to see it clearly. I understood then that it
did not want me to know what it was. I
became aware of a mumbling sound emitting from the figure,

(01:19):
as if it were trying to talk. A black object
held in its right hand was being offered to me,
pushed closer and closer to my face as the figure
continued mumbling at me. It was begging me to take
the object from it. I glanced to my left and
saw my body lying on the floor of my bedroom.

(01:40):
Yet when I looked down, I was still lying in bed.
Something looked different with my hands, though, like they were
tinted white distraught. I looked closer and noticed that while
the color of my skin had actually changed, it was
as if it had a glowed to it. Glancing up
at where the figure had stood, I was met with

(02:01):
an empty room. Darkness encroached on my vision as I
fought the overwhelming sense of physical heaviness and lost. When
I awoke, I was lying on the bedroom floor in
the same position as I had seen my body when
I saw it from the bed earlier. That was the
first experience I had. The second happened rather recently. It

(02:25):
was night again and I had just gotten in bed
to go to sleep. As I lay there, somewhere in
the depths of my near sleep subconscious, I could feel
people watching me. I opened my eyes and sat up
to see a group of dark shadows standing at the
foot of my bed. Their forms gave the impression that
they were people, though they were featureless and had no

(02:47):
real solid shape. I got out of bed and was
immediately stricken with intense emotional pain. Overwhelming sorrow, like that
of death, enveloped me and nearly brought me to my knees.
Emotional darkness, unlike anything I had ever experienced in my life,
flooded my mind. I yelled at the shadows, screamed at

(03:09):
them to leave me alone and go away, but they
just laughed at me. Standing up, I walked to the
one nearest me and started to fight it. My mind
went blank as I neared it, except for one thought.
Its name imprinted in my mind, suicide. The fight didn't

(03:30):
last more than three seconds before I felt myself lying
in bed again. I was asleep. This I knew, though
I couldn't move my body. A face was lying next
to mine. I could feel the weight of it on
the pillow next to me as it whispered unintelligibly into
my ear. Its cold breath rushed over my face. I

(03:54):
tried desperately to move my body to roll away, but
I was glued in to the bed. My body refused
to respond to my pleas so there I stayed unmoving.
Ever since that first encounter, with the white figure in
my room. I have heard and seen things. I have

(04:16):
never tried to call on any spirits, nor have I
ever been suicidal in my life. The thing is, my
house was brand new when I moved in, and even
now it's only a few years old. I was the
first person, and still am the only person who has
ever lived in it. I have no loved ones on
the other side, No close relatives or friends have ever

(04:40):
passed away. So whatever is trying to communicate with me
from the other side, I don't know what or who
it is.

Stuff You Should Know
Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
