Speaker 3 (02:16):
I am a doctor on a small thirty bed unit
in a hospital in Washington State. It is just a
hallway of rooms that end with a stairway going up
and down the building, and other than that, there isn't
much down that way, and so it is a little
eerie when you are by yourself. Room twenty seven is

(02:39):
near the end of the hall, near the stairwell. I
have heard a variety of stories from both the nurses
and patients of odds, sounds, and feelings at that end
of the floor, but most of them seem to center
around Room twenty seven. People have said that they have
heard the sound children playing in the room, to sounds

(03:02):
of people talking in the middle of the night when
everyone is quiet and all the staff are back at
the nurses station. When we hear stories of people saying
they are hearing children playing, it is a red flag
to us, since there are no children on the entire floor.
The pediatric unit in our hospital handles all the cases

(03:24):
involving young children, so there would be no reason to
hear these noises. This particular experience comes from an aid
that told me what he had experienced when he was
alone in the hallway near Room twenty seven late at night.
We were talking about some of the weird things people

(03:45):
had experienced while working in the hospital, and so he
told me his own story. He said that he was
helping a woman go to the bathroom late one evening.
He was just getting her settled into for the night,
and she asked him if he was going to assist
the woman standing in the doorway. She told him that

(04:08):
she had been there for a while and suspected that
she needed help, and that is why she was waiting
for him, he said. He turned around and there was
no one there. Most of our patients on the floor
can't go to the bathroom on their own, so a
staff member is always present to make sure they don't fall.

(04:28):
He told me. He quickly settled the woman into her
bed and got out of there as quickly as possible.
This aide told me he was terrified by the experience
and hadn't shared his experience with anyone before. Personally. I
have even had an experience in Room twenty seven myself.

(04:49):
There was one evening when I was on duty and
most of the rooms were empty. We call this having
a low census unit. I am assigned certain pays on
the floor that I am responsible for, and other than
in emergency situations, I don't really pay attention to the others.
The bathroom on the floor is down the hallway and

(05:12):
I have to pass by Room twenty seven every time
I need to go. One evening, every time I would
walk by the room, it was like I felt something
off about the room. I couldn't explain why I felt
that way, but it would unsettle me. Nonetheless, the room
was especially dark that evening, but I just assumed the

(05:35):
patient had wanted it that way to help him or
her go to sleep. The door was propped halfway open,
so I could see inside the room. Even as dark
as it was, I could see the outlines of the room.
I even saw what looked like a person lying on
the bed on their side all night. When I passed by,

(05:58):
I would have sworn there was a patient in there,
but to my surprise, one of the aides went into
the room to set it up for an incoming patient.
I asked her where the person in the room had gone,
and she gave me a funny look and told me
that there hadn't been anyone in the room all day.

(06:18):
I argued with her that I had seen someone there,
but when she showed me the logs of all the patients,
it showed no one there. I was baffled. I had
definitely seen and felt a presence in that room all night,
which made me think someone was in there. The events

(06:38):
definitely creeped me out. I have also had patients described
to me that they had heard sounds like someone was
walking on the walls and the ceiling in that room.
If they had just told me they had heard footsteps,
I would have just thought it was one of the staff,
since we constantly walked around. However, they would swear that

(07:02):
the sounds were coming from inside the room. There are
just too many stories of odd things happening in that
particular room for something not to be happening. One story
is excusable, but the number continues to mount even to
this day. If I were staying in that room, I

(07:24):
would be demanding to move

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
