Speaker 1 (00:00):
Appreciate you your calling in. Uh, just kind of give
us a just kind of give us an update on
the state of the Warriors right now heading into the postseason.
I know you had your win earlier this this week.
Talk about that a little bit and how you feel
like you're starting to come together here for the second season.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Well, I mean, you know it. You know, the scoreboard
hasn't really always been in our favor this season, but
you know it's offered us a lot of opportunities still
to you know, not only play the game, but you know,
to to try to instill skills and young lives and
these young athletes, you know, and how to coach. Tell

(00:38):
me earlier today, you know that, you know in essence
of you know, we're molding character and building young men
of integrity to Dimon and I couldn't be proud of that.
You know, we have a two seniors this year, which
is a small graduating class for us. We're relatively young,
and and I just I really think that talk about

(01:01):
them a little bit tonight. And you know it's Christian Heath.
Uh start with him and he and he's he's the
first kid that that I've coached for four years and
and just a hard nosed kid and and really to
see him kind of come into as in the last
couple of weeks, we're really super proud of him and
watching him, you know, grow into a young man that

(01:23):
you know, as soon as he graduates high school, you know,
he's already enlisted in the military. And and just just
seeing him, you know, leave this program, you know, in
better shape than when he found it. And then you know,
Aidan Lucas is another kid that a senior for us
that hasn't had a lot of opportunity to play, and

(01:44):
we we were able to get him into the game
at r c c A or or our senior night game.
And you know, a kid that, like I said, hasn't
been given a lot of opportunity, but when he was
given opportunity against r c c A comes in and
makes a you know, makes a big with about a
minute left in the game. You know, it just brings
the house down. So just really for us is is

(02:08):
just looking back on this season and and you know,
as I said, the scoreboard wasn't the best at all times,
but these kids are continuing to grind and you know,
we left practice tonight and and we brought in an
older group of kids to really push us, to get
us prepared for Ripley. And you know, we kind of
took it on the chin tonight in practice, and when

(02:29):
we went in to the locker room, you just thought
we had just lost the state championship game. So I
can see that that that these kids are. They're still hungry,
but at the end of the day, they're all so humble,
so I can be prouder of the effort.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
Coach talked to me about Ripley a little bit. That's
a home game for you on Monday, Is that correct?

Speaker 2 (02:47):
Yeah? It is.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
Yeah, talk to us a little bit about that opponent
a little bit. What what kind of challenges are they
going to present you?

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Uh, they like to place fast. They're they they crashed
the glass. I've watched the loads of film on them.
They they they're a little deeper than we are. They'll
go about eight deep. I mean, they've struggled this year,
as as have have we. No common opponents, I believe,

(03:13):
except for maybe Huntington, and they struggle to shoot it
a little bit outside. They'll run a primarily dribble drive offense.
But they're hungry, you know, they they remind me a
lot of a team that beat us earlier in the year,
and Trimble, someone that just continues to come out and
grind day in and day out, hard nos drastic glass.

(03:39):
You know, if we if we try to overlook these
guys coming to Frankfurt, you know it'll be ready to play.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
You know, coaches, as we go through the years, there's
just different things. I look forward to see the progression
and so and I see a lot of those things
that that pop out on film to me and to
pop out a little bit in box scores and so forth.
And and one of those is more and more Warriors
being able to score the basketball. You know, early in
the year, I had you on opening night and then

(04:07):
fairness to you guys, it was against Chili Cooffee's athleticism.
But has in watching you two or three times in
the first two weeks, you know there was there was
two three kids on the floor at all times that
maybe not even comfortable looking at the rim or attacking
or taking the shot or creating their own shot. Now,
when I watched you two or three times here in
the last two weeks, I see four or five sometimes

(04:29):
a six guy off the bench starting to really understand
role identification and so forth. Talk to me about that
that that's got to be encouraging to see that type
of growth in your young men.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
No, it is, and I think that just comes with maturation,
you know, being comfortable. We've got a really good core
young nucleus, if you will. You know, we've got a
really good sophomore, really good freshman, you know, Gavin Harrow
for example, and he's playing middle school basketball this year.
You want to talk about speed change, you know, leave

(05:03):
an H grade basketball game and get tossed into a
varsity game against HS. I mean, it's it's just it's
just a different speed. And you know that it they've
they've just done a they they've embraced it, if you will.
Our biggest issue was just trying to get them to
slow down, you know, try to take away space defensively, offensively,

(05:27):
try to create that same space. They're they're they're students,
they're they you know, we've spent more time in the
last couple of weeks in film room than we have
one to jimpore, and they've become really good students of
the game. You know, Joey Francis that we're all the
time looking at little quarts of you know, how can

(05:48):
we compete in this game? Or what goals do we
need to to hit to be in this game? And
and Joey's heard me say a million times, you know,
if we could make more free throws than the other
team attempts, we're gonna win. I guess west Fall played
r CCA the other day and r CCA made more
free throws than west Fall att or missed or vice versa.

(06:08):
He comes in and gives me a hard time about it.
So I know they're paying attention to those little details
and that I couldn't be happy about that. They just
they've become real students of the game. And then for me,
you know, you know, I consider myself still a young
coach and ever still learning, and you know, early on,

(06:29):
I think that maybe I was trying to maybe instill
the system that I want to run versus what those
kids were capable of. So it was a big growing
moment for me, you know, just being able to step
back and say, you know, we need to slow this
down a little bit and and really get put these
kids in the situation to be a little more successful.

(06:51):
And I think since we've done that, I've watched Colton
Garrison just s flourished in his position and he's becoming
more vocal now. And then when you have it, as
I said, the seniors constantly given words of encouragement of
practice to those younger kids. And then Luke Preston and

(07:11):
you know Langston Metzger. You know, beginning the season, Lenggston
turning the ball over seventy two percent of the time
when he touched it. You know now he's down to
twenty three percent. So those are huge strides. And when
you have those huge strides at the end of the
season going into the term of time and then you're

(07:31):
you know, thinking about summer already and things that we
can do to improve the program m s couldn't be
happier where we at, the kids that we have.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
At what point in the season were you able to
really see that shift in you know, maturity for your players,
because I know you brought up Garrison and I know
earlier in the season you were talking about how he
was kind of more of a quiet and reserved player.

(07:59):
Is he's still quiet and reserved.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Yeah, he's still quiet, but he is he allows his
physicality to do the speaking for him. If you will
maybe early on he was he would catch the ball
in the low post and he would allow kids to
push him around a little bit. And nowadays, I mean
I said it in that piking game, I really thought
he took it to Henry and I felt like he

(08:25):
was the biggest kid on the floor. And then he
comes back and drops twenty eight on west Ball and
really they had zero answer for him. And I think
for us just being able to, you know, tell him, hey, Colden,
you're a sophomore and our offense is going to flow
through you, and that paint you give kids confidence. Then

(08:49):
everything else just kind of unfold. And it's been really
nice to watch that.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
Well. Coach. I think it's a great matchup for you
Monday night at home and get you a tournament win
there and to take a shot of a good Eastern
team and and a lot to build on into the
years to come. But I can't thank you enough for
calling in each and every Friday night. Best to luck
to you here in the second season.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
No, we appreciate it. Thank you
