Speaker 1 (00:02):
Can you hear me, coach? There we go, Hey, coach,
is Shane appreciate you hanging in there with us? The
uh coming up here on the end of the year
tournament time. Uh, it's always an exciting time here. Just
kind of let's start there a little bit, give us
kind of an update on the Lady Warriors and and
the mindset. How you feel about where you're at and
(00:23):
about the upcoming matchup.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Yeah, so we play We played Northwest on Thursday. That'll
be at our place. You know, I feel like we're
probably playing our best basketball of the year right now.
We seem to be kind of firing on all cylinders
and uh, getting more contributions for more girls. And yeah,
(00:49):
it just feels like we've over the over the past
you know, two three weeks, we've been playing our best
basketball and that's what you want to be this time
of year. So we actually have two regular season games
left before that. We we have Philsborough tomorrow. They're a
really good team and I really actually like that matchup
(01:11):
this time of year for us because it's a I
feel like it's a good test as we get ready
to go in the tournament play. And then on Monday,
we uh, we finished art the league season with West
Ball at their place, and they gave us a really
good game at our place, so we know we're gonna
have to be ready and play good basketball to win
(01:33):
that one as well.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Yeah, no question, I wanted to come back to West
Fall in just the second. But first, as we as
we all adjust here to the new postseason format you
mentioned thursday, is that the what would be considered the
old sectional final round.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Is that the district it is quarterfinal now it's a
it's a district quarterfinal now, but yeah, that would have
been our sectional final.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Do you have an opinion on that? I mean, I know,
I know a lot of people look at it. Now
you're gonna chase district titles, which is awesome, But but
I feel like at the same time, I know, I
know programs always had taken a lot of pride and
what it meant to be a sectional champion and cut
down a net. Yet do you have an opinion on
that change of format?
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yeah, you know, I think we I think we do
miss something in not being able to, you know, give
our girls a chance to cut down a net for
that sectional championship. But I also kind of feel like
with the with the expanded divisions, I think winning a
district title is much more, you know, in the grasp
(02:36):
of a lot of teams. And you know, I think
anytime you cut down a net, you wanted to mean
something special, and so I get you know why they
they made the decision to go on in the districts.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Now, you know, coach you mentioned Wesville. I had my
notes to ask you about this because I think you'd
be an outstanding when to give good insight. You know,
you and I talked matchups last week, and you know
west Fall and you talk about tough matchup. They provide
a couple of elite scores there and then a couple
experienced role players to go with them. I had a
chance to watch them about three or four times this year,
(03:13):
and that men, they are knocking on the door of
getting you getting piked and getting hunted, and they just
haven't been able to get over the hump. Talk to
us a little bit about what makes them uh such
a such a tough matchup for for some of those
top teams in the league.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
Well, first of all, Adrian Male is just a tough
matchup for anybody because she's got great size, She can
step outside and shoot it. She can use your body
really well to get to the basket. She can just
kind of score from everywhere on the court, and because
of her size and strength, but just there's just not
(03:47):
a lot of girls that that you have that can
you match up with that one on one, So it
requires you to you know, pay extra attention to her,
which then you know, opens things up for for the
other players. The freshman cook has had a very good
freshman season. She does a lot of things for them.
(04:10):
And then like you mentioned, they have three seniors that
have that have that have all played a lot of
R City basketball, so well, they may not always fill
up the stat sheet, they do a great job of
knowing what winning the choirs and being in the right
spots and doing the right things. And so yeah, it's
(04:32):
a it's gonna be a tough game. You know, we're
going on the road. You know, we we want to
we want to piece the second place. We don't want
to fall back in that race. So we know we're
gonna have to go play well to give ourselves a
chance to win.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Yeah, no question about it. Then you know, if if
people aren't familiar with Hillsborough, as you said tomorrow that
that's that's a really talented basketball team on the road.
And then, like you said, Westfall, so it's going to
be more than battle tested going in the tournament here
in the coming week. You know, Coach I, you and
I obviously love talking basketball off the air as well,
you know, known each other for twenty plus years now,
(05:08):
and well a lot of times we'll just break into
basketball conversations. I was listening to a podcast I listened
to all the time, and it was talking about where
culture and leadership meets x's and o's, and it made
me think of your basketball team a little bit, because,
as you and I have talked about before, you know
that there is there is something to be said at
(05:30):
the end of the day that you've got to have
some talented kids to run some plays and score some
points and so forth, but there's also something to be
said for culture pieces. And you know, you and I've
talked about the ability to run the offense and to
the x's and o's have been very consistent in your
program through the junior high end of the high school,
and your kids execute really well. What's your take when
(05:51):
you hear me say that, you know, when when a
culture and leadership kind of meets exis and those I
think those two linked together in your program. So where
maybe you do lack a little bit of the talent
you've had in the last two or three years in
terms of you know, points becoming more you know, on
an on an easy type of of level, you've made
up for some of those culture and leadership pieces. Is
(06:11):
that fair?
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Yeah, Yeah, I hope that's true. You know, I think
we've just been really blessed with kids that are willing
to do whatever it takes to win. And I don't
know that that's as common as it used to be,
but we just we just have kids that they want
(06:34):
to come in and do it the right way, and
and they work hard, and you know, they're kids that
that that show up and and just give it everything
they've got. And and so you know, even in a
season like this one where we may not have the
depth of talent that we've had in the past, you know,
(06:59):
a kid like Aaron Sowers, who's a three year starter
for us, just does so many little things that contribute
to winning that maybe the casual fan doesn't understand. But
you know, she's just a kid that has seen and
grown and learned what it takes to be successful at
this level and she contributes to that and in so
(07:23):
many real ways. You know, Ava Ferrell and Live Ferrell,
who are sophomores this year for us. Both of them
just play so hard defensively, and you know, they did
the little things. They boxed out, they dissected screams. So
you know, as much as I would love to take
(07:47):
the credit for that, we we've we've just been really
blessed with girls that are willing to do whatever it takes.
And uh, and that just goes a long way when
you're talking about building the program, your courage.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
Last question I had down on my notes here and
did I see the other night that I that I
read the report correctly? JC Jones had sixteen. I know
we were just the uh, but but again that was
coach Andrew Day of the of the Deana Lady Warriors.
They're they're they're enjoying an outstanding season. Again when you
consider what they've graduated over the last couple of years,
(08:21):
really really impressive. They're they're sitting at nine and four,
fourteen and six, and again they have two really tough games.
The Hillsborough team's really really talented. I believe they're seventeen
and three. They've been fighting McLean there at the top
of the fac So Diana has to go there tomorrow
on the road then Monday night. The west Fall team
(08:42):
right around five hundred, just really really talented. They that'll
be a challenge. So so a Diana getting the opportunity
to go on the road to Hillsborough in West Fall,
that's gonna just do wonders for them as they come
up on the opportunity to get ready for tournament play
next Thursday. Do we have him back?
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Yes? From here?
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Okay, sorry about that, coach. I was asking on the
report there. I had one more question for you, because
I know you and I had talked about some of
your young players here recently when we were talking some basketball.
Did I see a report then the night where j C.
Jones had a real nice game.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Yeah, she had sixteen for us. You know, we we
know going into most games that that teams are going
to do whatever they can to take Marley out of,
you know, the regular offense. And then Karin came out
and hit three threes in the first quarter, so then
they started to kind of take her away. Well, you know,
(09:37):
when you take when you go that far to take
away two girls of an offense, it's going to create space.
And j C came into the game and took advantage
of that. Uh just had some open looks and those
went down and then kind of started to get more aggressive,
and you know, I think she had those six ten
(10:00):
points at seventh field goal or six six field goals
on maybe eight attempts. Just played really well. And man,
going into tournament time, to have that another player that
we really trust, it just goes a long way. And
(10:20):
she's just grown so much throughout the course of the year.
So it's been exciting to see that happen.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
Yeah, no question about it. You know, we talked about
depth are and there in the year, and slowly but surely,
it seems like you're getting more comfortable that sixth person,
then a little bit more comfortable to the seventh person,
and then that leaves you some options there on the
defensive end as well. So well, coach, I can't thank
you enough for hanging in there with us. I really
like the set up of your schedule. I think those
are two tough road tests. When we get your battle
(10:47):
tested ready go in tournament. Best of luck. Love to
talk to you next Friday night so we can catch
up on how the tournament Charl's going for you.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Okay, so I'm good. Thanks guys,
