Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, coach is Shane. I had a chance to get
out and see you guys the other day and watching
you from down at floor level, the first thing that
jumps right out at me is just the year of
growth and improvement. I know that particular game didn't go
the way you wanted in the end, but we'll get
to that more in just the second But I guess
my initial response in terms of looking at hunting was

(00:21):
just the year's growth. Is that fair from from from
your take on it in terms of have you have
you seen some things from last year to this year
that that leave you a little bit more optimistic?

Speaker 2 (00:31):
You know, you're absolutely right. I think we, uh we
played the other night with the intensity that we were
looking for and for the most part of the confidence
we were lacking last year. And you know, other than
not finishing, I thought our kids came out for the
first game the season and played pretty well.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
Yeah, I think that's really fair. I thought I thought
you did. You got off to a great start and
you're able to establish you know, uh manson inside and
then Hinneberger got going. I thought you had some nice
balance in the first half and played really really well.
Just just talk to me about the growth of Manson
and Henneberger and then where you're getting some of the
rest of the offense to kind of catch up and

(01:13):
grow a little bit this year.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
But you know, those two had fifteen a piece, gave Beardsley,
I gave had twelve or thirteen, Eli Airy had ten.
So you know, that's the first time in a long
time we put four guys in double figures. And you
know we had two or three other guys that scored some.
So you know, we've got some balance scoring. We've we've
got an inside attack, we've got you know, some outside capabilities.

(01:38):
And you know, last year we struggled offensively. We ended
up the year last year averaging giving up fifty points
a game and still won six games because we couldn't
generate any offense. This year, it's a little bit more
struggled defensively, but we are trying to put some changes
in our defense, you know, keeping our core defense that
we're just trying to mix that up a little bit

(02:00):
and we're going through some growing pains with that right now.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Well, coach, I guess that's the one thing I had
down with with one major question to ask you. I
thought in many cases the other day, the initial defense
was pretty good, and you had quite a struggle keeping
Amanda off the offensive glass. I know you could tell that.
You even talked about that at half, and when it
happened early in the third quarter, I could kind of
sense your frustration a little bit. So I thought, initially

(02:26):
the defense not too bad, just had trouble wrapping some
possessions up. Is that fair?

Speaker 2 (02:31):
That that's more than fair. If if our report card
had an app on it, it was it was our
ability to keep them off the offensive glass. They got
so many second third attempts. Well, the epitom me of
the whole thing was the final shot to Buzzer was
a putback, and you know we've got We've definitely got
to clean that up. We cleaned that up and get

(02:53):
our share of those rebounds in. We probably keep control
of that game till the end.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Yeah, you know, I know, losing so frustrating, But at
the same time, as a coach with a young group,
I'm sure the final two minutes of film could be very,
very valuable in terms of where the season goes from here.
I don't know the exact time. I think it was
two oh something when when Carson had filed out, so
you were forced to play a little bit there without
your your floor general. And I thought, I thought hers

(03:20):
and some other guys really stepped up and take me
through that last two minutes there on some on situations
that maybe you wish you could have back a little bit.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
If you know, we were up six with I don't know,
two o four two o six to go when all
that took play. You know, it's it's tough. Three three
of the guys we had on the floor playing at
about eighty percent, which is not bad, but you know
it's not one hundred percent. When you're not a great team.
You need people there. And you know, we just had

(03:49):
a lot of mental lapses. And and I'll be the
first one to tell you it wasn't only the kids,
but it was me. I've second guessed several of these
decisions in the last couple of days. But we just
didn't take care of the ball. Last two minutes. We
had three what I would consider unforced turnovers. We allowed
a couple of footback scores, and you know, we put

(04:09):
ourselves in position to give them a chance to win
it at the end.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
Yeah, and to their credit, you know, they obviously come
up with the play. But again, I know that's something
you guys will really learn from. I want to switch
gears a little bit as the program continues to make
some strides. I've been asking some coaches about some of
the younger levels. I know last year and following junior
high basketball, you had a really nice eighth grade group.
So your incoming freshman class is one that I'm sure

(04:34):
you're pretty high on. Talk to us about your younger levels.
Are you happy with the numbers the overall participation down
to the JV level? Yea.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
As everybody knows, we had eleven total kids in the
high school last year playing basketball, and to their credit,
we have I believe it's twelve freshmen this year. And
that's that goes from the best most ability freshmen to
the least ability freshmen. And I promised those guys at
the end of the year, if they would stick with it,

(05:04):
we would play freshman games. So everybody got to play
some basketball this year and those kids did. You know,
it's hard to get freshman kids in the gym and
the summer, but those kids came, and right now we're
in the low twenties number wise, and you know, right now,
we're setting to play JV and freshman basketball.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
That's outstanding. That's really good. So coach, take us through
your schedule. Here what we got coming up?

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Well, we were supposed to play New Boston tonight and
somehow three weeks ago they decided they weren't gonna get
a bus becomes the Thanksgiving holiday, so the New Boston
gave been rescheduled for February eight. With that being said,
we jump right into SBC Twesday, we travel to Adena,

(05:48):
and then we travel to Southeastern next weekend, and finally
the tenth we get our first home game of the
season with West Fall.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Well, I had a chance to see a Dean of
the night, a young group, but a group played really
really hard and and and I'm sure in the in
the league opener, uh that that'll be a good matchup.
What do you know about Adena? What have you had
to take a look at so far?

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Yeah, I watched the same game you did. I was.
I was impressed with them, especially early, and I just
think that the physicality of the games that went on
just just really callsome. I mean, you know, they they
were jumping out of their comfort zone playing that game,
and you know, my hat's off to them for that.
You know, they battled the best they could and you know,

(06:35):
a Deena's got some hard news kids. They're going to
play basketball. I they looked pretty well understanding of what
they're trying to do. I mean they didn't. They just
didn't look lost out there. They've got a couple of
kids that can score, they play some nice defense. They
may not be what they were last year, because you know,

(06:57):
last year they were a pretty nice team, but I
still think they're going to be a competitive, solid team
and we're going to have to play as well as
we did Windy and be able to finish to have
a chance to win that game.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
Well, they have plenty of players who can score. You
do as well. You had four players and double figures
the other night, senior Carson Hennenberger and junior Calvin Manson.
They had fifteen points, Gabe Beardsley, a senior, had eleven,
and your junior is that eli Ari had ten Arry. Okay, Yeah,
so that was that was great. It seems like they

(07:32):
you know, they all have confidence in the offensive arena.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
You know they do, and as a coach, you would
much prefer to see four guys in double figures and
one guy with thirty and the next guy with nine,
and that's what we've got to keep striving for. I
know Brian had talked about he's had two games with
two different leading scorers, and I can see that as
a real possibility with us throughout the season. There there

(07:57):
might be five different guys we've got that can actually
be our leadings doors in a game this year.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
I definitely could see that. And watching you play the
other day, but Coach, listen, I always enjoy talking basketball
with you. I hope to get to every Friday night.
I know it'll be a key SVC opener for you Tuesday.
Best of luck, and I look forward to talking to
you next week.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
Okay, I appreciate it.
