Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, coach, I appreciate you calling in. I know it's
been a it's been a good start for the SVC
overall on the on the boys and girls. For the
most part, I've enjoyed watching a lot of basketball. I
know you're a basketball junkie beyond just your normal coaching
as well, so we've always shared that passion. Just kind
of talk to me about the the early feeling here

(00:20):
as you as you've been off to to start with
with some hoops.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
No, it's it's always a good time of year, you know,
Thanksgiving time. Obviously a lot to be thankful for. But
at the same time, the basketball has been good, getting
getting SBC play started. We didn't really want to have
to give over to Nyoda the other night, but that's uh,
you know, it's a tough place to go play and
a very good basketball team. But got off to a
good start at Philicasi and got a win and then

(00:46):
went over and kind of ran into a bus stall
the other night, uh at u Nyoda, and then I
got to bounce back and go to Adina tomorrow night.
So really really tough schedule out of the gate for us.
But again, we're we're a young basketball team that really
looking forward to see where we stack up.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
But it seems when I saw your team play against
Chili Cooffee, your team look like it has some real
nice hype.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Yeah. I mean we bring back a little bit of
size with the ray of Smith, a junior that's played
for US now for a couple of years, but moving
more into a starting role now and a little bit
more more being asked of her of course. And then
we got the freshman Brayley Houseworth. It starts for us
as well and has done a real good job. The
first two games Chilicothee, she had twelve point six rebounds
and I think the other night she had thirteen rebounds

(01:33):
against you and Yoda. So yeah, good good start to
her freshman campaign. And we do have some size. I
got a little bit of size we can we can
bring off the bench as well, So something we've not
really had the last few years. We've been very gold
to oriented, you know, since I took over the program.
And it is kind of nice this year to be
able to come down and run some things and throw

(01:54):
the ball inside a little bit. We've done a decent
job so far on the glass. So yeah, something we
hope to continue to expand on as we go out
or go through the season and hoping to get our
big kids involved as much as we can.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
You know, coach is as much as you're sprinkling in
some of the young talent, you certainly do have some
experience back. Have you found yourself a little bit ahead
of where you were this time last year? It seems
like you certainly have some names that have been showing
up on that hunting and scouting report for several years now.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Yeah, we you know, got a little bit of a
late start this year because of volleyball, which you know
is always a good thing. When we're winning in volleyball.
I've never been you know, that's never been a thing
that's bothered me at all. Usually, you know, we always
talk about winning, breeds winning and you know, had a
great volleyball season, made it to the district final there.
Kids came in on the following Wednesday, so they really

(02:46):
only got a couple of days break, which which you
know is tough on a high school kid. But we
were able to give them a few days but got
in a little late. But the great part is we've
had these girls, most of them for three and four
years now, so they know our system and they understand
what we want to do. So yeah again, Alie Baker,
a senior, was the first teamer last year, you know,

(03:06):
ar we'll mentioned a averaged about seventeen and a half
a game last year. She's had you know, two games
this year, twenty nine and twenty one, so averaging about
twenty five points a game for us right now, which is,
you know, if we're going to be successful, you know,
has to continue, maybe not at that rate, but at
least has got to continue where she's you know, a
big time scorer for us. Leam mccofsky, you know a
name you here in all three sports of course, was

(03:28):
an all stater in volleyball and is another kid that
has given us good minutes. And then we also get
good leadership out of Savannah Bushy Ats and Kaylee Kendall,
our other two seniors. And then we got a starting
point guard Tory Smith, that started for us for the
last two years, so this is her third year you know,
as a starter for us and really takes care of
the basketball and does a great job getting us in

(03:48):
some things. So we we do have a great mix
with some older kids with some younger kids. We have
three three freshmen that are on our varsity roster, and
you know, it's going to be interesting down the stretch
here to see what production we can get out of
these kids.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
What kind of goals does your team have for itself,
Like when you were in the preseason, what did they
what's the number one thing that they want to prove
this season?

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Yeah, I think we've been asked that a lot here lately,
and I think we've kind of a as a as
a team and as a staff, we've kind of come
in and talked a lot about it. As young as
we are, in some spots, we are big goal is.
I know this is very cliche, but as we come
in and get better every day, I mean, our our
our goals to get in there, get in the gym,
get better every day, and continue to respond during games

(04:33):
and continue to get better. You know, we we got
our bell rung a little bit the other night. We'll
see how we bounce back tomorrow. I got to play
another not only good team, but you know, Adina and
Niota girls basketball has kind of been the standard over
the last you know, three, four or five years, and
we're trying to get to that point. And I think.
You know, tomorrow night's a really big game for us,
going over to Frankfurt. You know, those guys do a

(04:56):
great job over there, their kids will be well prepared.
Got a really good basketball team again year. So just
kind of taking it day by day, trying to win
as many games she can. Obviously, you know, with the
expanded divisions in basketball, you know you're looking at eventually
the tournament draw and what does that look like with
everything expanding. But again, just just very hopeful that we

(05:17):
can continue to get better and win as many basketball
games as we can this season.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
Yeah, coach, I want to go back a second. It
is interesting the combination of older and younger. I know
the volleyball program went through that a little bit and
had some success, and it sounds like the chemistry for
you working as well. And at the head of that
chemistry you mentioned Baker and her ability to really score.
I'm fascinated by her improvement throughout her career. You know,
as a young player, she was always a great shooter,

(05:42):
but she's really turned into a great score And I
know in talking to some people the other night that
the word I use was easy. I mean, she's getting
it so easy at times, even against the caliber of Uniota,
just the ability to score it from the perimeter, scored
at the free throw line, scored, and transition. Talk about
her her improvements and some things that she's added to

(06:02):
her game over the last couple of years.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yeah, her maturation over the last you know, three years
has been really really good. You know, she started out
as a freshman with you know, playing with some really
good players at that time in Alison Basey, and she
could just kind of stand out there, catch it and
shoot it, knock down shots for us as a freshman.
And then you know, as a sophomore, she you know,
started to get a little bit better with the basketball
in her hands. And over the last two years she's

(06:26):
really turned into a score at all three levels. She
she's getting to the free throw line. She shot thirteen
three throws against Chili COOFEE the other night was twelve
to thirteen from the line. You know, got it to
the whole several times. Has turned into a pretty solid
defender and gets her hands on a lot of stuff.
So she gets out and transition and can make some
points that way. But again, obviously she shoots the basketball
really well, but putting the ball on the floor better.

(06:48):
She's got stronger, you know, over the last three years,
and you know, we we worried about coming into the
season and even a little bit last season where we're
going to be able to get shots when teams really
kind of us on defense a little bit, could we
could we penetrate and create shots. And I will say
that's one thing this season, even in the scrimmages in
early seasons, she's been able to do for us is

(07:09):
you know, put the ball on the floor and really
get shots and when we need a shot. So you know,
order is you can draw anything up that you want,
but eventually you got to have some players that can
put the ball on the floor and take it at you.
And she's been able to do that for us this year,
and hopefully she she can continue that. We know we're smart,
we know she's gonna you know, she's going to get
a lot of different defenses and things throwing her way

(07:31):
this year, and we kind of decided to prepare a
lot for that to make sure that, you know, when
that stuff happens, that we can still not only create
her shots, but also used her to create shots for
other people. She's very unselfish kid, she'll screen for us
when we need her to, and she does a lot
of things without the basketball in her hands too, so
and I think we're improving in that area as well.
She's understanding the game much better that you know, when

(07:53):
they're they're coming up and they're going to you know,
faceguard her, double her. There's things that she can do
and with her screening that that can hit our teammates open.
So we're working really hard on those things and hopefully
as we go through the season, we'll see some improvements
in that area.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
Wait, Coach, can't thank you enough for calling in. Look
forward to talking to each and every Friday night. I
think this is going to be an outstanding year for Huntington,
coming off of ten and four sixteen and seven overall
season a year ago, and I certainly think all of
those things you're talking about are certainly achievable. Best of
luck throughout the year. Make sure you call in and

(08:29):
talk to us each Friday night.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
I appreciate all you guys do, and we will talk
