Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, coach is Shane. I appreciate you hanging in there
with us tonight. Exciting time of year, you know. I mean,
you get to this point in the year and no
matter how the regular season goes, you got tournament time
around the corner for you guys. Obviously the regular seasons
went quite well, you know, working on an outstanding record
and peeking ahead to the postseason. That's where I wanted
(00:21):
to start with you kind of give us an idea
of the outlook heading into the second season for the
Lady Huntsman.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
So, you know, last Saturday or last Sunday, so they
found out, you know, we're the sixth seed, so we
do get a home game kind of an all SCC bracket,
which you don't really like to see that. You'd rather
get some fresh blood, I think in the tournament. But
Jane Trace will come to our place next Thursday night
on the thirteenth, and then if we're you know, fortunate
(00:48):
enough to win that one, which we've had to really
really close games with them, one just this past week
where they let into the fourth quarter. So you know,
if we if we're fortunate enough to get by that one,
we would have the winner of Southeastern and Alexander two
good basketball teams as well. So you know a lot
of these see teams and the twenty two teams that
we have in our sectional district. So again just you'd
(01:13):
like to see some different different teams, but you know,
we have to play they who they assign us to play,
and we'll do our best to try to get ready
to do that this week.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
Well, no question, you know, you finish off SVC play
at ten and four, which is going to lock you
into that two spot and you got the new Boston
left Gland would I believe with a chance to get
to seventeen and five overall, So you know, we'll get
to the tournament talk here in just a second. I
wanted to highlight that that regular season, if you're able
to finish that off, and again I did see glenn
(01:44):
Wood once this year. They're an improved basketball team from
the past couple of years. But if you're able to
get that one and get seventeen and five, ten and four,
that's got to be another proud step, another good good
year for your program.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Yeah. Absolutely, We've tried to talk to the girls a
lot about that, and I think we've talked on this
show a lot about that throughout the year that our
girls the expectation is becoming where we just kind of
expect to win and which is which is what you want,
but also you want to be able to step back
when you when you do, you know, set some goals
and you start to reach those goals. You want to
make sure that the girls are getting to appreciate what
(02:17):
they're doing. And you know, we tried to talk about
that throughout the week and we really focused in ever
since the Uniodo loss that hey, we have you know,
seven games down the strets that we really feel like
we can be competitive in and win. And you know
we're going to have some tough ones you know at
River Valley and all of our league games are tough,
and you know, we we we kind of talked about
can we get all those and get the seventeen wins.
(02:38):
You know, that's kind of the goal when tomorrow night
they get a chance on Senior Night to cap that
off and go for seven in a row here and
try to finish the season at seventeen and five, which
would be a great year for us.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Well, there's no question about it. And you know, coach,
you know, with it being the Super Bowl weekend, and
so forth. You'll hear these guys talk about how the
regular season to the playoffs and then to the conference
championship and the Super everything rams up. You know, in sports,
I think that's true at all levels. I don't care
what sport you play or what level you play at.
When you when you go from the regular season to
the tournament, there there's there's a whole anxiety and anxiousness.
(03:14):
It's a one and done, all or nothing, no matter
what your record says, no matter whose favor who's not favored.
I think experience goes a long way in that. Do
you feel like some of your upper classmen are in
a good place to you know, when you go back
to the to the tough game against Alexander a year ago,
to kind of help the younger kids along and really
put your team in the right mindset as you enter
(03:36):
the second season.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Yeah, you know, we hope so. And I think our
our upper classmen are are ready for the challenge. And
I think you're exactly right, Shane. You know, when you
get the tournament time, every possession matters defense and offense.
You know, you feel like you're hanging on every shot
and Yeah, our first opponent is a tough matchup for us.
I mean it's been a tough matchup for us both
(04:00):
times we've trailed into the fourth quarter against the same
trace both times we've played them. Josh does a great
job out there. Their kids play really hard. I feel
like they've gotten better as the year's going on, and
I mean they're super athletic. They can stretch you out.
They kind of do some things that hurts our line
up a little bit, and I mean everybody that's seen
both of those games know that. So you know, our
kids know that we got to get in next week.
(04:22):
You know, right now we're focused on this one tomorrow.
But when we start getting in next week and you
watching film and trying to get ready for that, you know,
we really got to prepare for some things that you
know that we've already seen, but probably some things that
we might not have seen. But again, you just you've
got to be able to fight when you get in
the tournament and crawl or call and scratch and make
sure you try to get to the next round. It's
(04:43):
all about surviving and advancing. And you know, I think
our kids have done a good job. At the end
of games and really really digging deep and finding ways
to win basketball games, and hopefully that'll help us when
we get the tournament going.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
You know, coaches, the landscape changes a little bit with
the seven divisions. You know, I I think that it
was a It's a great opportunity for our sport. Certainly
Division One needed it, But I've even argued that, you know,
going up and down in my coaching career, I know
what it's like to be the biggest school in the
state and a certain division. I know what it's like
to be the smallest school in a certain division, and
I'm telling you there's a difference. So I I you know,
(05:18):
I'm all for the change in the sport evolving. The
one thing I asked a couple of coaches earlier, I'd
love to get your opinion because I know you're you're
not just a basketball coach, but you're someone who loves
high school sports. You Okay, with the way they've eliminated
the sectional championship and they call it the district QUARTERFINALI
give me an opinion on that.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
No, I'm not not super excited about that. I think
it takes an opportunity away from the kids. You know,
we've we've had a lot of discussion our you know,
our admin team and you know, our A D and
all of us out our way, and I mean we
still really look at it as you know, we're getting
a chance to play in a sectional final in our minds,
you know, at our place against Dane Trace, and you know,
(05:57):
I know the state's telling you you can kind of
call it what you want, and you know they're they're
wanting you to more look at it as as district games.
But again, you know around here as well as I do,
people understand what's at stake when when you get in
the tournament. And yeah, I think it's just a good
experience for kids to be able to have that experience
and win a sectional title and and cutting that down
(06:18):
and it just means something, especially to the Southeast District.
I feel like they've done a great job of keeping
those things around and and really trying to protect what's good,
what's good for student athletes. And so if I'm I'm
being honest, you know, I don't really like that the
sectional is gone. Obviously, it's you know, it's the system
that we've been placed in, so we've got to move
(06:38):
forward with it. But but again, we'll we'll still make
sure our kids know, you know, what we're playing for,
uh and what Zane Trace will be playing for next week.
And you know, i'd say the Southeastern coaches and Alexander
coaches will be saying the same thing about that game
going to Alexander's. You know, this is this is an
old sectional final. It's that's getting us to the district
level and it's just as important. So yeah, hopefully, hopefully
(07:01):
we can find a way to bring those things back around.
I understand why they had to do it a little
bit with you know, some of these divisions don't have
enough teams to really have a sectional final, and you know,
most of the teams that get a buy would already
be past the sectional final. So that's what kind of
makes it tough. So I do understand that, but again,
I hate it for the kids.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
Well, I agree with you, and I guess at the
end of the day, you know, programs can treat it
however they want in terms of hanging a number or
cutting a net or whatever. But I agree with I
think you and I are on the same page there. Hey,
before I get you off here, I wanted to give
you an opportunity to maybe highlight a kid. You know,
we talk a lot of Baker, we talk a lot
of Houseworld. I obviously that's that's that's well, you know,
(07:42):
deserved by those young ladies. Maybe maybe give me a
player here late in the year. I know you've had
some role players have some outstanding games and some recent wins.
Let me give you a chance on the air here
to maybe highlight a kid that maybe doesn't get enough
credit in terms of the media sometimes.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Yeah, you know, I think Tory Smith and a Smith
I've really played for played really well for us. You know,
we talk a lot about, like you said, Ali and
Leah and Brayley, but those other two starters have done
a great job. And lately, you know, Ray had six
points and six rebounds the other night, hit some big
shots and some crucial times. She's really shooting the basketball
well for her size. You know, she's about five to
(08:19):
eleven and shoots basketball pretty well from the perimeter. I
don't think many people realize that right now. And she's
been able to take advantage of you know them not
gardener as much out there, and and you know, Tory's
just getting us in everything. You know, she's she's a
true point guard, doesn't care that she doesn't score points,
isn't worried about that. And of course she draws everybody's
you know, best off intive player every night on the
(08:41):
defensive end and does a great job. So you know,
those two are kind of unsung heroes for us. You know,
two other seniors, Savannah bush Ats and Kaylee Kendall that
has some great leader ship for us, and Savannah coming
off the bench has done done a really good job.
So you know, yeah, those would be the ones that
are some unsung heroes, and hopefully we can get some
more production from those people as we move forward and
(09:03):
we should be okay.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Well, coach, outstanding season. I hope you can finish it
off here with another regular season win and then you
have best of luck to you and all the SVC
teams and all the local teams here in the upcoming tournament.
But love to talk to you next Friday night, talk
a little tournament basketball with you.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Appreciate it.
