Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, coach Ali is Shane. How are you sea? Evening?

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Fine? Sir?

Speaker 1 (00:03):
How you doing good? Good? A obviously tough stretch of
games here when when you when you start talking Unio
to Zane Trace here this week tonight with making the
trip over to Zane Trace. Uh, take take us through
that a little bit and tell us how the game
went well.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
The game didn't start out very well for us. In
the first quarter. They jumped on us twenty to ten,
and they hit four or three in that first quarter
on us. It was like we were running in quickstand,
like everything we were doing was wrong, and every shot

(00:42):
they took it seemed like they made it.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
You know, Coach I you know, I had it in
my notes, and I've asked a couple of coaches, maybe
not all of them, but but but I will ask
you there as you're as you're talking about getting off
the starts and things like that, And it's not even
really an excuse as much. It is just a basketball
topic that high school coaches go through. We've had this
stretch of weather, we've we've been in and out of
the gym, and you had some time off and you're

(01:07):
coming back and you're obviously playing two high level opponents
back to back. Here, take take us through the last
couple of weeks with the weather, do you feel like
a little bit of the lack of practice time, a
little time and lack of time in the gym maybe,
I know, I know it's nice to have the physical break,
but maybe out of rhythm just a little bit, and
trying to get kids back into the routine.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Yeah, I mean, I don't like to make excuses or anything,
but the kids haven't been in any type of a
routine that Sunday that we got that big snow. I
think we didn't have practice three of those five or
six days that week due to the weather. And then

(01:48):
we come back and we open up with the two
top teams in the league. So it wasn't easy on us.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
Well, I get that. Again, I'm not I respect that
as a coach, and I you know, I'm not trying
to even make an excuse as much as it is,
it's just part of it. It's part of what high
school coaches have to kind of deal with. And you know,
as an educator, I know how kids are even coming
back to the classroom they've been I think we counted
on our school schedule twenty three straight days off before
the kids had come back to school. So sure, I

(02:19):
think we're all doing with that. You know, as I
hear you talk about the first quarter tonight, I know
I had a called a game. Was they trace a
couple of weeks back there where they did the same
thing to Hunt And you feel like you come in
with a plan and some different things, and when that
team shoots the ball from the perimeter at that level,
just talk about the incredible challenge they put on your defense.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Oh, they put an incredible challenge because they have so
many good shooters. You know, they're really fundamentally found, but
they can all shoot the basketball from the three. So
I thought the first half we played pretty timid, worried
about them shooting at three or getting the ball into
Gunner in the post, and we missed several bocks out

(03:04):
on misshots and Gunner was able to put them back
in a hole. You know, they the same thing happened
the second quarter. They outscored a seventeen to four. We
missed some shots, but yet they shot the ball extremely well.
They hit three more threes in the second quarter on us,
and we just couldn't do anything right. Defensively or offensively

(03:29):
in the first half.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Well, you know, coach, now I believe it's nine and six.
I believe it is, and you kind of put those
to the side. You use the film to get better.
I'm sure you some practice time to get better. Still,
I know you've shared some goals with me in terms
of having winning season and so forth, and all those
things are right out there in front of us. Talk
to me about the mindset now as you move toward.
I think it's piked in the Dina coming up in

(03:53):
league play here in the next week, kind of talked
to me about moving forward in terms of the message
to the kids.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Well, you know, the game on Tuesday against you know
that we didn't play very well, and you know it
is another very talented team, but we didn't shoot very well.
I think we made eleven shots. And tonight, our first
half we didn't do a very good job of defending, rebounding,
and putting the ball in the hole. So the second half,

(04:22):
I challenge them at halftime, and we come out the
second half and outscored them twenty eight to twenty in
the second half, and we just challenge our kids to
get up and guard a little tighter, and box out.
So we did the three things that we didn't do
in the first half, we did those in the second half.

(04:43):
And I told a kid, I said, I don't like
moral victories, but the way we played this second half,
if we do this moving forward like we're capable of doing,
we'll be fine.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Well, I'm kind of hearing your voice. They're a little
bit more optimism in that second the sixteen minute segment.
Talk to us individually about who you thought played well,
maybe who kind of sparked you with some energy in
terms of their leadership tonight.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Well, you know, we were fortunate we were able to
hold Gunner. Mccallaugh had thirteen points and he had ten
of them in the first half, so we did a
really good job of keeping him off the boards. And
Grady Stewart another good shooter. They have had twelve points
all in the first half. We were able to keep
him from scoring in the second half. So defensively, all

(05:30):
of my kids did an outstanding job at rebounding and
doing their job assignments on who they were guarding. I
think Mike Smith had us turning them over eleven times
in the second half and only two times in the
first half. Wow, And that just comes from you know,
getting a little bit tighter defense, being a little more active,

(05:51):
and being a little more aggressive.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Yeah, that's outstanding defensive effort. Again, especially against that level
of opponent. Before I get you off here, certainly want
to give you a chance highlighting kids who led you tonight.
You hany stats in front of you?

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Yeah, I've got the scoring gates. Chele led US with thirteen,
Joey Piper came off the bench and had eleven for US,
and Carterfisher had seven.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
Got wild standing Well, coach, I listen, I appreciate you
always respect your one to highlight your kids win or lose,
and highlight your program. I think things are going in
a real positive direction. There two really good opponents this week.
I know you guys will bounce back and all those
goals still in front of you. Look forward to continuing
to talk to each and every Friday night.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
Thank you,
