Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, Matt. First of all, I just I guess I
want to start before we talk about tonight's game, just
for a lot of our listeners. I know I've talked
to a lot of people about it. I know longtime
Vitton County coach, and I know what that community means
to you. But at the same time, I know what
this Unioda community means to you. Just talk to us
a little bit about what it means to you to

(00:21):
kind of be home, so to speak, there at Unioda
and running the boys basketball program.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Well, I'm definitely thankful for the opportunity. It's been a
great program. Obviously, coach Hoops had, you know, seventeen years
or so of just great success in that program. And
so it's like I said when I first got hired,
you know, it's it's big shoes to fill, and it's
the programs. It's been really, really good and obviously we

(00:52):
want to continue that. So yeah, but it's it's been
enjoyable to be back in the gym, and I've had
a good group because of the world with h They're
good kids that work really hard or attitudes are good.
Really tonight get the well force. But I really have
no complaints in terms of the type of kids I

(01:12):
get to work with every day.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
Well, I guess before we get to the night's game,
let's just start with the with the roster a little bit.
It is a roster from what I've observed, that's that's
really deep in terms of some good players, uh, and
probably some things you got to sort out and finding
combinations and so forth. But how would you how would
you best summarize your roster here in the early going,
as you get to get to know the kids and

(01:35):
they get to know you.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Well, I mean, you know, we have some experience, uh
with three or four guys, but then we have a
lot of complete inexperience too. So it's just and the
you know, out of the eight or nine guys we're playing,
it's probably about half and half. Maybe you get some
experience with guys like Blake Hoops, Blake Fitch, KB Perkins,

(01:59):
Caden cut Right, a senior that got to play considerable
minutes last year, so he's got a little bit of
experience now too. But then but then after that, you know,
we get some guys that basically either played JV last
year or or pretty much played JV last year. We've
got one freshman on the roster, so you know, we

(02:21):
have some inexperience too that we're trying to bring along.
So it's been been kind of a mixture. Uh. You know,
getting KB back has helped us, will help with me.
He gives us an inside presence there with a lot
of experience. But we weren't sure, you know, all along,
whether we would have him. He's been he's been coming

(02:41):
along nicely, So that's a big look force for sure.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Well, Matt, I was on on the radio there on
the Chilicothee side the w b X with the Chilicothee
aDNA game. The nice I hadn't didn't get a chance
to follow your game much, and I haven't had a
chance to see the film yet. To kind of take
us through tonight, get off to a bad star?

Speaker 2 (02:57):
What was it?

Speaker 1 (02:58):
I know, I know on the road, do you you
Miami Trace is going to present quite a challenge.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Yeah, I mean, they're they're they're a challenging team to
play early in the season for sure, because you know,
they played they played all almost all zone and they
played three different zones tonight and that's hard to go
against early. And I told the guys, I told the
guys after the game, and I and I and I

(03:25):
meant it, but a lot of that losses on me tonight.
You know, I didn't have our guys well enough prepared
to go against those three zone offenses. And you know,
I mean early in the season. It's not easy, but
it's my job to do it. I didn't do it.
But uh, you got to give them credit. We didn't.

(03:47):
We didn't get off to the great start. It wasn't terrible.
So we actually had a pretty good offensive both quarter
We had seventeen, but we were down nineteen seventeen, so
we really struggled to guard the guts we did. We
had twenty four tonight, and you know, he caused us
all kinds of problems. KD had two thousand within the

(04:08):
first three or four minutes, so and that was due
to you know, obviously they got three kid getting the
ball inside on him and he's got great feet for
the kid that size, and we just didn't really have
an answer, and you know, it forced us, It kind
of forced us at halftime to try to turn it

(04:30):
into more of an up tempo, just up and down
type game, to try to neutralize him a little bit.
And it just didn't work. I mean, you know, they
they took advantage of some of our breakdowns and ended
up getting some way ups and transition, and we just
weren't able to make enough shot ourselves against their zone

(04:53):
and it just kind of snowballing on us. The whole
second half had just sort of hovered around twelve or
thirteen points. It seemed like we could have a really
good nuper ten and that was that.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
Well, obviously that's a special athlete, presents quite a challenge
on the one end, and as you say, seeing some
of the unique defenses, I'm sure that'll go a long
way and helping you improve here in the early going.
Individually night, some people stand out to you who led
you tonight.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Blake Hoops led us to night with excuse me with sixteen.
I believe I don't have the book in front of me.
He got a pretty good shooting night. I want to
say Blake maybe made four threes tonight, and you know,
probably shot a pretty pretty good percentage honestly before and

(05:38):
and Jackson Zigafous gave us fourteen, and I think, uh,
I think Blake Fitch had nine. So you know, we
we just we just you know, we we we just
went through stretches tonight where we just weren't able to
score against their zone and their zone once you once
they get a lead, that zone almost works a little

(05:59):
bit like a stall game too, because you can't just
come down and throw one pass and score against it.
With their links because beside the gu three kid, they
have a couple of kids that are like six or
four just rangey type athletes, and so they're they have
the right personnel to play a lot of his own
and they did a good job mixing their zones tonight
just kind of keeping us off balance. Honestly, Coach Colmbs,

(06:22):
do you have any players who are your go to
on defense? Yeah, We've got a couple of guys I
think that if really give us something pressure in the ball.
I mean Jackson being one of them. You know, we
we think he's one of the better on ball defenders
in the league. And Kate Tutwright being another one. Those

(06:45):
two guys we feel like do a great job. Now
we have some I mean, Blake Fitch is an excellent
defensive player too, but we obviously depend on him for
several things. But like you know, those two guys, Jackson
and Kate are guys that you know will consistently put
on a couple of the other team's guards, and I
thought they did a pretty job to Ni Jackson call

(07:06):
some turnovers early. You know, we just like I said,
we scored seventeen points in the first quarter, so we
were able to call some turnover to do a few things.
But we once the game got into a half court
we just we tried to speed it up. We just
couldn't get it. The tempo, you know, mixed with some

(07:28):
efficiency on our end, we just couldn't marry those two things.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
Tonight, two part question for you, Matt, and I'll get
you out of here. I guess as you go in
the next week, tell us who who you start SVC
play with, and then maybe give me one thing that
as you make that first game, the second game jump
with some film work and some practice for a time
that that you hope to see improve.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Well. We played Payne Valley and aDNA next week, Paint
Valley at home on Tuesday, and we go to a
Dean on Friday. You know, I think at this point
in the year, man, there's so much that you want
to get better at. But I you know, obviously we
want to we want to get better at just like

(08:16):
shuring up some of the things we do and just
executing it a little bit better. I mean, we you know,
we at time in our pressure tonight, we were really good.
At times we were out of position, we were not
rotating the right way, and we'd give them to an
easy one, you know, offensively, same thing. There were times
where we played with good pace, the ball was moving,

(08:37):
and then there was times where we were where the
ball was sticking, we weren't moving it. You know, just
some of those things you just got to sure up.
I mean, you know, obviously, you know Miami Trace presents
a little bit of a unique challenge because you haven't
seen that much done in the pre season and all
of a sudden you see all zone with their length.
It's not it's a challenge for sure, but you know,

(09:01):
Payne Valley and Diana is going to present challenges. And
then you know, so we I think we have to
worry obviously, we have to game plan and all that,
but we have to worry a lot about ourselves right now,
just trying to kind of to get better. I mean,
I think every basketball coach is in the same boat
that you don't have a lot of practices in the preseason,
so you end up starting to play games probably before

(09:22):
you're ready. But that's everybody, you know, and so every
practice in these first couple of weeks, she's just trying
to kind of clean things up.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
Well, no question and no doubt that you'll you'll, you'll
get them a little bounce back and get them ready
to go in league play. But I appreciate you taking
the time to cast coming back off the road tonight
and look forward to talking to each and every Friday night.
So make sure you call in and so we keep
up on the Shermans, all right, Thanks, appreciate it.
