Speaker 1 (00:01):
Can you hear us coach, Yeah, I hear you.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Hey, appreciate it, coach. As I said all the coaches is,
you know, got a lot of different things going on
in studio here, and I appreciate the patience and and
uh yeah, the one thing I got two or three
things I want to get to with you tonight that
that I thinks are really intriguing basketball discussion. But first
let's start with tonight. Huntington been playing really really well. Uh,

(00:25):
talk talk to us about the win to night and
from your perspective, how it went.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Yeah, I mean we knew Huntington's been playing very very well.
They've played a lot of tight games and had some
good wins, but some also some really tough close losses.
And you know, I know that they've been playing a
lot more man and their kids have been really physical
and man and man defense. And they came out in
the first half and did that with us, and you know,

(00:52):
their kids just played extremely hard tonight, and uh, it
was a good challenge for us. It was a good battle.
And I thought that our kids hand you know, the
physicality pretty well, and we got some shots, but we
just weren't you know, shooting particularly well, but give credit
to hunting ten for you know, some of us pushing

(01:12):
us off our spots and doing some good things defensively.
But it was just kind of a back and forth game.
At halftime, I think we might have been up by two,
but we told our guys, you know, we knew it
was going to be kind of that kind of game.
We knew that Huntington had been playing better, and they
do some good things, and they got some really nice
pieces that I think are playing well together, and they're

(01:33):
going to be a scary team in the tournament. For
you know, I want to be surprised if they do
some good things.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
I agree with you completely. I think that's well said,
you know, you know, coach, before we get to some
of the other topics, why don't we go ahead and
stay on tonight's game. Talk to us here about who
led you, who played well for you tonight.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
I've gun and McCullough played really, really well. He had
twenty three and I think ten or eleven he had
a double double, and then Land and Robinson had a
double double as well with rebounds points. I'm not sure
how many points we had. I think it was around
eleven or twelve. And ten rebounds as well. But those two,
you know, we've just been making a point of emphasis

(02:11):
on rebounding. And you know, one of the things that
one of our assistant coaches, coach Nate Jerald, brought up was,
you know, when we run our stuff and we execute,
sometimes we don't necessarily make that first shot. But because
we put teams in situations where maybe they're overhelping or rotating,
it really gives us more rebounding opportunities. So, you know,

(02:36):
that does make sense, and I think that's the way
it kind of went tonight. We we would run some stuff,
some actions to get shots, and we didn't shoot it
particularly well, I think for only three of nineteen from
the three point line. But what we did do well
is we rebounded really well. And that's why Gunner had,
you know, the double double with twenty three points.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Well, it makes total sense. I think it just shows
off your versatility. I've seen yeah called games of here
is where you just shoot the lights out and you
can win that way. But that proves that even on
a poor shooting night, you can do it in other ways.
You'll coach at seventeen and three overall and twelve and two,
there in the SVC, still hanging on to a chance
to share a title. You know, kind of give me
a mindset going in the postseason. I mean, you guys

(03:17):
are locked and loaded for what could be a great
opportunity here.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Yeah, it looks like we're going to start off with
Nelsville York at our place with the way that the
RPI looks right now, and we scrimmaged them at the
beginning of the season, so we know their pieces and
you know a little bit about their team, and they
had a big win tonight against Danton County and look
like they're playing pretty well. And I think Huntington just
played them and took them into overtime. So it'll be,

(03:44):
you know, a similar battle for what we had tonight probably,
so that'll be a tough game. And then it looks
like we're going to be matching up with either Coal
Grove or Ironton and those two teams. Actually it's played
tonight if we're able to win that first round game
and Ironton was able to be cool Growth tonight, but
I think a twenty point margin or somewhere around there,

(04:05):
and you then kind of keeping an eye on who
we could possibly play and some of the matchups that
we would have, but you know, we just got to
continue getting better. I think it's good that the two
games that we had that we cancel, we put them,
you know to next weekend. We're giving the kids off
tomorrow and then we'll come in and have a you know,
good practice on Monday, get ready for Logan elm on Friday.

(04:27):
Then we got fifty County on Saturday. But in the meantime,
you know, there's a game Minford plays Miami Trase on Tuesday.
I believe over there and going to try to get
over and see that one. So you know, it's a
fun time of the year. Our coaches are getting out couting,
thinking about matchups and different game plans, so it'll be exciting.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Yeah, it really is. I noticed on your schedule the
Logan Elmen Vinton County. They're going to get a chance
to play against some really good guards. Logan ALM's got
an outstanding thousand point score and then obviously the eventon
County's point guard is outstanding as well. Well. Yeah, I
want to I want to backtrack to one of the
games of my notes was at Jackson that was on
the road, correct the Jackson game. Yeah, got jack Yeah,

(05:10):
the I was so intrigued by that matchup. I felt
like you guys were mirror at each other in certain areas.
You know, maybe I don't know, maybe Jackson a little
bit more physical than you, but you guys probably a
bit more verse to when your skill set. But nonetheless,
I thought it was just a great matchup. And as
you go into tournament to go and get a fifty
four to fifty win, that's that's one I really highlighted. Coaches, man,

(05:30):
that's got to give you a ton of confidence knowing
that in a one and done format you're capable going
toe to toe with anybody you're going to see. Is
that is that kind of what you guys take from
that Jackson win?

Speaker 1 (05:41):
Well, absolutely, And you know, going back to the weekend
before where you knowa just really put it on us
at our place, that was kind of a get checked
moment for us. The next morning, you know a lot
of guys were hurting and we talked about how, you know,
it's easy to say, you know, what you do is
moving forward, is going to read your character and those
sort of things that coaches day. But I mean for

(06:04):
our kids to truly be able to regroup in a
short time stand and you know, be able to just
dig down and play with a lot of toughness down
that Jackson just it truly does. I know it's a cliche,
but it does say a lot about the kind of
kids that we have and where their mindset was, and
you know, just really really proud of the effort that
they had. But to answer your question, like absolutely, you

(06:26):
know you're gonna have when we, you know, get in
the tournament, it seems like the games always get closer
and in the fourth quarter. You got to make plays
to be able to win. You got to make sure
that you're being strong with the ball, you got to
make free throws down the stretch. You're gonna have to
be able to guard and maybe whatever your coach is
asking to do, whether it's switch or anything, you know

(06:47):
like that at the end of the game, you got
to be able to execute it. One thing that I
felt like we didn't do well against Jackson is I
think they hit four threes down the stretch and really
tightened up the game. And we need to talk out,
you know, when you have a decent lead. I think
we're up by eleven or twelve going into the fourth, like,
and it's still up by ten with three minutes to go,

(07:08):
but they just hit back to back to back three
So we got to be able to get out on
people and you know, just do a better job of
challenging shots a little bit more.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Well, coach, I think that's good stuff. Like I said,
I've been real excited to follow your team. I really
like the makeup of your team. I think you fit
in a lot of different matchups and I think that's
going to play well in the postseason. Appreciate your calling
in all year long, and next week as we get
into ready for some postseason, give us a call and
we can talk a little bit more of the bracket.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
All right, sounds good. Appreciate you guys,
