Un computer è una macchina universale

il concetto di "macchina universale" è strettamente legato al lavoro del matematico e informatico britannico Alan Turing. Nel 1936, Turing ha introdotto l'idea di una macchina teorica chiamata "macchina di Turing". Questa macchina era un modello astratto di un computer che poteva eseguire qualsiasi calcolo possibile seguendo una serie di istruzioni, definite tramite un programma.
La sua intuizione fondamentale era che esisteva un modello di calcolo universale, capace di eseguire qualsiasi procedura algoritmica. Questo concetto è diventato noto come la Tesi di Church-Turing, che suggerisce che tutto ciò che può essere calcolato seguendo un algoritmo può essere calcolato da una macchina di Turing, o da qualsiasi altro modello di calcolo universale equivalente.
