The Front Porch Genealogist

In this episode, genealogist and legacy coach Terri Ward, known as The Front Porch Genealogist, provides a heart-centered conversation about the many ways people show up to do the work of family history. Drawing from her work in Coastal Georgia, and her unique framework of four genealogy archetypes: Porch Sitters, Torch Tenders, Root Tenders, and Lineage Liberators, Terri explores how identity, curiosity, and courage shape the path we take through legacy and discovery. Whether you’re quietly listening to family stories or reclaiming erased narratives, Terri invites you to reflect on your place in the journey, grow at your own pace, and recognize the healing power of your family history work.

Terri Ward, The Front Porch Genealogist, is a modern-day griot. Passionate about history, and genealogy research, she’s focused her background and expertise to recover the history of Coastal Georgia’s African American families, and the facts regarding this region. Originating her research in McIntosh County, making numerous treks to the state’s archives and repositories, she’s woven detailed documentation, oral history, family lore, and personal stories into the vast tapestry of U.S. history, emphasizing Georgia’s Low Country and Gullah-Geechee culture.

Terri has presented at notable national and state focused events such as Charleston’s Commemorative Roots & Branches Genealogy Conference, the Afro American Historical and Genealogical Society, the Burning of Darien Museum, as well as numerous reunions and virtual events. Beyond speaking, she focuses upon crowd-sourced and community driven projects. She is the founder and creative director of front porch genealogist.com, a co-founder of UJIMA Genealogy of Coastal Georgia and the Low Country Georgia DNA Project. She’s a member of the Afro American Historical and Genealogical Society, the Coastal Georgia Genealogical Society, and the Georgia Genealogical Society, where she serves as the Publicity Director.  Terri Ward, is on a mission to certify her genealogical expertise and publish her first book.
