Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello and welcome to a special taster of our new
premium only story. We hope you like it. Yo. Hello everyone,
(00:23):
I'm Josephine and this is the Animal Tales podcast, home
to over four hundred stories written just for you. Our
Friday story is especially for our Premium subscribers only. Olly
is a Premium member from Glasgow in Scotland and he
would like a story with an octopus and a badger.
(00:43):
Don't forget to listen to the animal facts after the
story to learn more about these creatures. For now, it's
time to sit back and get comfy, because it's time
to begin My best friend. Animal were used to see
in creatures of all shapes and sizes. In Rainforest City.
(01:05):
It wasn't unusual to see a towering giraffe striding along
the same pavement as a scurrying vole, or see a
grizzly bear munching a slice of pizza alongside a humming
bird sipping a slushy. They were all manner of scaly,
furry and feathery faces, and everyone for the most part,
(01:26):
was fine with that. Take Ollie, for example, he was
a giant octopus with horny lumps above his eyes and
with skin of orange and red. He lived in Mangrove Keys,
a pretty part of the city on the river side,
where many of the aquatic animals chose to live. There
(01:48):
was something about living near and often in the water
that drew them to the place. Olli had a small
apartment in Mangrove Keys, below the water line, but he
didn't spend all his time there. That's because Olly's best
friend lived elsewhere in the neighboring district called the Burrows.
(02:11):
To visit his friend, Olly had to pull himself out
of the water and walk on his eight legs through
the streets, which was exactly what he had planned for
this very day off out. Olly asked mister blue Crab,
one of his neighbors. Lovely day for it, sure is,
(02:34):
smiled Olly, as he finished climbing up the steps from
the water. Got anything planned, asked mister blue Crab. Oh, yes,
said Olly, I'm off to meet my friend Toby. Ah
nodded mister blue Crab. Is he a nice octopus like you? No,
(02:57):
chuckled Olly. He's not an octor but he is at
least an aquatic creature like you and me, stated mister
blue Crab. As if that part was obvious. Oh no,
replied Olli, correcting him, Toby's not aquatic at all. Mister
(03:19):
blue Crab had never heard of anything so absurd. Why
in all the oceans would an octopus want to be
friends with an animal that wasn't aquatic? But Olli, why
would you be friends with someone who is so different
to us, asked the crab, shaking his head in disbelief.
(03:40):
Toby's not different, said the giant octopus. Toby is my
best friend. Mister blue Crab didn't know what else to say.
As he watched Ollie walk away. Olly didn't give mister
blue Crab's comments another thought. He was more concerned earned
with what he and Toby might get up to to day.
(04:04):
Entering the burrows, Olly was soon underneath a part of
the city with towering trees. Roads wound their way around
and under thick roots, while buildings filled in the gaps.
It was in one of these buildings that Toby lived,
and as Ollie approached, he saw a vulture giving the
entrance door a new coat of paint. Hello, there, said
(04:29):
the vulture, helpfully moving a pot of paint out of
the way. Don't mind me, she said with a smile,
Olly slipped by, giving his thanks to the thoughtfulness of
the vulture as he did so. Toby's apartment was down
a short flight of stairs, and Olly was soon rapping
(04:49):
upon the door with the tip of one of his arms.
The door was opened by a badger. Olly cheered the
badger happily, clearly please to see his friend. Hi. Toby
grinned the octopus as the badger stepped outside, pulling the
door to behind him. I thought we could get a milkshake.
(05:12):
