Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, and welcome to a special taster of our new
premium only story. We hope you like it. Yo. Hello,
(00:23):
I'm Josephine and this is the Animal Tales podcast, home
to over four hundred stories written just for you. Our
Friday story is especially for our premium subscribers only. Sophie
and Mia are from Hong Kong. They would like a
story with a black kite, a Chinese white river dolphin,
(00:43):
and a wild boar. Don't forget to listen to the
animal facts after the story to learn more about these creatures.
For now, it's time to sit back and get comfy,
because it's time to begin the daughter's gift. Long ago,
near a fragrant harbor, there was a small house. It
(01:05):
was just large enough for the family that lived there,
and although they did not have much, they were very
happy in their home. There are many jobs to be
done every day, such as feeding the chickens, fetching the water,
and sweeping the floors. The two daughters that lived in
the house could see that their mother worked hard, and
(01:25):
they were both keen to help her whenever they could.
One morning, after the morning's chores were done, the mother
announced that she was going to market I shan't be
gone long, she told her daughters. Stay here and play
while I'm away. The two girls watched their mother upon
the path until she had disappeared amongst the trees. Our
(01:50):
mother works so hard, said Sophie, the eldest of the pair.
She does, agreed Mia, the youngest child. I wish we
could give her a gift to show how much we
appreciate her. But we have no money, sighed Sophie. And
even if we did, I do not know what we
(02:11):
could buy her or where from. There must be a
way we can bring her something, Mia said with a frown.
Let us take a walk and think about it. So
the girls followed a path behind their house that led
up towards a mountain peak. Although they were reluctant to
(02:31):
go that far, even so, after a while, they were
high enough to give them a view back towards the harbor,
over the tree tops, and where a large bird circled
above their heads. On seeing the bird, Sophie called out
to it, mistress black kite, She called, will you come
(02:53):
to our aid? The black kite looked down upon the
girls and judged them to be good, honest to children,
so she flew down and settled in the branches of
a tree. Tell me, asked the black kite. Why would
two girls need the help of some one such as me.
(03:14):
Our mother works so very hard, said Sophie, and so
my sister and I wish to bring her a gift.
Do you know of anything that we could give her?
Hum thought the black Kite for a moment. These mountains
are full of glorious treasures. I'm sure I could find
(03:34):
something for two thoughtful daughters such as you. Wait here,
and I shall bring you the best treasure that I
can find. How wonderful, danced Mia with delight, and how
lucky we have been to happen upon such a kind
and helpful creature. I cannot agree more, smiled Sophie. With
(03:57):
Mistress black Kite's help, we shall soon have one of
the treasures of the mountain to give to our mother.
I cannot wait to discover what it might be. Perhaps
it will be a nugget of gold, gasped Mia, or
a piece of silver that would be perfect, laughed Sophie
(04:18):
as she hugged her sister in joy. The black Kite
soon returned, swooping over the tree tops from the mountain's peak.
She perched again upon the branch, an object clutched in
her taloned foot. Did you find something, asked Sophie with excitement.
(04:40):
I did, nodded the black Kite and dropped the object
into Sophie's outstretched hands. But what is this, asked Sophie
with dismay. It's just a rock. This is not a treasure.
Oh but it is, said the black kite. Turn it over.
(05:02):
