Speaker 1 (00:14):
Hello everyone, and welcome back to another edition of another
Wildcat First Down Guess along with Chris Wood Chris Tough.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Loss last week to start the conference, Yeah, it certainly
wasn't the outcome we vote for. Of course, we always
know those kinds of things can happen. We lost against
Park Heritage thirty two to twelve. Yeah, I don't.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Think that everything went the way it was planned, but.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
That's why they played the game right. Absolutely. You know,
it's not the ideal situation. You want to start one
and two for the season and one in the conference.
That's never a good thing. But we have a chance
to redeem that this coming Friday night, as going through
a million, the Falcons will be coming to town at
Anderson Field at seven pm.

Speaker 4 (01:02):
Yes, and you know you always like that inner county rivalry.
That's always fun to bragging rights, dragging rights. Yeah, chance
to win the county so you know, I can't say
a lot riding on it, but you know it's it's
gonna be for a fun night.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Of course, North.

Speaker 4 (01:23):
Vermilion they're h and three and we're one and two
right now. Gonna meet coach Crabtree. We've seen him a
lot in the years past.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
You know, this is his twentieth year coaching.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Yeah, he had last year off, kind of took a
little rest from football, if you will.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Ben's back.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
So even though they're owing three, you never want to
count the Falcains out.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
I mean, Crabtree is a great coach.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
He's got a stay titled under his belt, so he
knows how to get the w's he does.

Speaker 4 (01:52):
But you know, I also like our chances for the
youth and exuberance of a young coach Miller his first year. Absolutely,
it's kind of the yin and yang, you know, the
twentieth year versus the first. And you know, I have
a lot of confidence in coach Miller and the boys.
And you know, we don't know until we see it
Friday night, but I have I have some good thoughts about.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
It, absolutely, you know.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
And what's also a chance is to get one on
one in the conference be five hundred in terms of that.
Things are going to start shaking out after a week
two of the conference play, and this would be a
good way to kind of get back on the right
side of the columns.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
It sure is.

Speaker 4 (02:31):
Let's go back to last week. Absolutely about that game
against Park Heritage started out in the first quarter, about
eight minutes nine seconds left, Park Heritage is Blake Lek
had thirty one yard run. Pat was good, put us
down seven to nothing. Second quarter, Legki had another one

(02:55):
yard run. Presley had the pat down fourteen to nothing.
Forty six seconds left in the second quarter, Mason Willcox
received a pass from Soyer Monic the pat failed, So, yeah,
twenty one nothing. That actually that math doesn't add up,

(03:18):
but that's what the stats say. Yeah. So going the
fourth quarter, Monic two yard run, v At fails, twenty
six nothing.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Then we see a little light.

Speaker 4 (03:32):
Colton Manette receives a six yard pass from Shryock, puts
US on the board twenty six to six. Vander Hayden
Front Park Heritage had a nice forty one yard run
puts US down thirty two to six, and then Shryock
just saw daylight. Thirty two yard scramble put us on

(03:53):
the board again thirty two to twelve. As you said,
not exactly the night we would have loved to have. However,
we got to see some light.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
You know, it's always great to be able to score
and not get shut out, especially with the conference game
and arrival of Park heritage in terms of that, and
then easily the kids could have gave up, the boys
could have gave up, and it could have been a
thirty two to ninheen shutout. But they hung tough and
was determined to score not once but twice during that
fourth quarter.

Speaker 4 (04:24):
Yeah, and Ben Tryock looked good running the ball. Quarterback
nineteen carries one hundred and forty four yards seven point
six yards per carry. Wow, anytime you get that. Takes
that all night, Take that all night. Also, Colton Robertson
nine carries twenty seven yards. That breaks out the exactly
three yards. Again, that's your goal, right, If you get

(04:45):
three yards to carry, that's a good night.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
I think most running backs that they want three or
four yards I carry. If you can average that, you're
probably gonna win the fourth down.

Speaker 4 (04:57):
And move those chains absolutely. Minette on the receiving side
of the ball, four receptions, seventy three yards, eighteen point
three yards per reception. That's that's a great night.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
You know.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
Braxton and idaway and only had one catch, but he
averaged seven yards. He got seven yards on it. Z
Royal three catches for twenty two seven point three yards
average Christian piece thirty four yards out of four catches.
That's eight point five. Those averages are pretty darn good.
We just got to put a few more things together,

(05:31):
and I think we're on the same board.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
Right Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Yeah, And like you said, those you know, eight eight
yards to carry seven is great, but you just need
more than four or.

Speaker 3 (05:41):
Five of those you need, Yeah, you need to string
those together.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yeah, and you know, hey, we said all season they're
still young, and I think they're they're progressing nicely in
the process. I mean that offensive defensive line is very young. Youah,
they're taking some some hard licks, but I think they're
getting better every single week.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
I couldn't agree more. Colton Robertson on defense.

Speaker 4 (06:07):
Had eleven total tackles, Colton Manette ten tackles, Mason Larsen
nine tackles, Ben Tryout nine tackles, Z Royal six, Jacob
Staw six. I mean, you know, yeah, distributing the ball,
lots of the distributing the ball on offense and then

(06:28):
on defense.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
They're sharing a load, you know, wrapping up, and you know,
the key is for them not to get discouraged.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
I think everybody knew they were going to be young,
and you know, it was tough following the last three
or four years some good ballplayers and both offense and defense,
and then to be so young as we are. Uh,
they're only getting better each and every week and the
future is gonna look bright. It's not a crutch, right,

(06:59):
but there are some bright spots there.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
And we're you know, also on top of that, we're
also nursing some injuries. And let's harp on that. Don't
even call out names, but we know because we don't.

Speaker 4 (07:09):
Want to make an excuses, no excuses, but we're off
the running back. I saw another key player in the boot.
I don't want to release that kind of stuff. If
it's out there, that's cool. They could figure that out
on their own, that's right. Don't want to spread any
rumors or anything like that. But on the other hand,
key players with.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
Some injuries, absolutely, you know, you talk about the running
back being out, and that's your secret, that's that's probably knowledge.
But what's nice is when you had two good quarterbacks
to running backs that you could either put them back
both in the backfield, and now the defense has to
figure out who's going to get the ball.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
Ben's got the option to be able to do that.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
But the other thing is it's also nice to be
able to give you a running back a break and
know that you're probably going to lose very much in
the yardage.

Speaker 4 (08:02):
And Colton Robertson has done a great jobs Stephan, Yeah,
we talk about that next man up, and Colton's done
a great job in trying to fulfill that.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Ben is doing a good job.

Speaker 4 (08:14):
He retched the ball a lot, some of them through scrambles,
in fairness, some of them through scrambles. But he's done
a good job with his legs.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Yeah, yeah, in terms of that, So a lot of
positives there.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
We're probably not seeing the results that we've been used
to in the past on the scoreboard. But Russ is sure.
I think these kids are progressing nicely. Sure, you want
to win your first game in the conference. I get that,
But you know, let's talk about it for twenty four
hours and then we got a man up and be
ready because you know, as we've heard so many times,

(08:44):
most important game is the next game.

Speaker 4 (08:46):
Most important game is the next game, which is this
Friday night.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Talk a little bit about the coming up game. Yeah,
so we got Friday night.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
I think it's going to be a exciting because it's
a rival game. It's a county rival, bragging rights in
the county. North Romine versus Sounds per million. Falcon's is
going to be coming into town. Like you said, maybe
not the team that we have seen in the past. Right,
in all fairness, they're zero to three in terms of that.
But like I said, you can't count coach Crabtree out

(09:15):
and be expecting a little bit of anything from that.
But I think it's going to be a great night
for us to get a victory, go one on one
in the conference, get that bragging right for the county
and then really set that anchor in because we got
some pretty tough teams in the conference still coming up.

Speaker 3 (09:33):
We certainly do.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
And another important point to this coming week, it is
the Gold Game. For those not familiar with the Gold Game,
it is the battle for childhood cancers. Right, you've seen
the ps, we love you shirts and all those kind
of things. The cool thing is, yes, that is stage
a ground our former coach Greg Barrett and his son

(09:54):
Patrick Barrett, who lost a tough battle with cancer as
a young teenager. But it's not about coach Barrett, that's right.
This is about fighting childhood cancer. All The money raised
goes to the PS We Love You fund, which helps
fund the fight for childhood cancer at Riley Hospital and

(10:16):
the testing that goes around the particular strain of cancer.
I don't know if that's the right term that that
Patrick lost his battle with. So we had some fun
things the last couple of weeks helping to raise money
for that. Last Wednesday a week ago, they had a
flag football tournament. Not as not as many people signed

(10:42):
teams signed up as last.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Year, but it was still good night. It was fun
to watch and the most important part of that, Chris
is money was raised. We had some fun and it's
going to a great cause. Like we said, the true
tackle is tackling cancer.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
Absolutely.

Speaker 4 (10:57):
This past Wednesday night was maybe my favorite night of
the year so far for South Romillion football. It was
fun to watch the I don't know the name of it,
the opportunity for moms, little sisters, cousins, nephews, aunts, grandma's

(11:18):
to tackle their kid. They paid twenty dollars in order
to mombs put on the helmets and the shoulder pads
and got a chance to tackle their son or nephew,
their football player rather and it was super fun.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
The moms, I can't say moms.

Speaker 4 (11:38):
All the all the females, all the participants wrote a
really fun bio that I read off, and it kind
of focused around common core of Yeah, you're my baby,
but I'm tired of picking up your socks, I'm tired
of fixing your dinner. Uh, this is my chance for
a little revenge. And it was all done in a

(11:59):
lot of good fun.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
It was. It was a great night.

Speaker 1 (12:03):
Well, christ some of these boys needed to be paying
attention because mom's purtting on the old shoulder pads now
and they're not gonna take it easier on you.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
Maybe maybe your opponent will, but not your mom. Well
that's right. And you know, it spanned the ages.

Speaker 4 (12:19):
We had a couple that were little bitty girls, little sisters.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
Sure, I'm not sure.

Speaker 4 (12:26):
I think we're in the four or five year old range,
all the way up to grandma's.

Speaker 3 (12:31):
We had several.

Speaker 4 (12:32):
Grandma's and it was it was super fun and as
you said, more importantly, it raised money for childhood cancer.
And but we're not done this gold game. This Friday night,
there's going to be a carnival for the cure, all
kinds of all kinds of activities. I don't know all
the details about the carnival. However, here's something fun that

(12:54):
I learned. He so Familian Youth Football League raise the
money and they've done a great.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
Job of.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
Collecting money and doing fun things for the kids. The
Sophamlian Youth Football League has agreed to pay for all
the youth football players to be a part of the carnival.
So they're making that donation two ps, we love you
in order for the kids to have a good time.

Speaker 3 (13:23):
You know.

Speaker 1 (13:23):
And Chris, not only is it happening here at South
Vermilion this weekend, but all through the state of Indiana,
primarily West central Indiana. Maybe not this weekend, but throughout
the football season, a lot of these schools are stepping
up raising money for a great cause to tackle childhood cancer.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
And that's the most important thing.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
And you know, Doug, as you mentioned, it's high schools,
it's also middle schools, it's colleges. I know that Indiana State,
Rose Holman, Yes, I think Saint Mary the Woods. They
all do those kind of things, sell T shirts and
all the money goes back to fighting childhood cancer, to
tackle cancer.

Speaker 3 (14:05):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
And if I'm not mistaken, and if I'm wrong, I apologize,
But I think of that money goes, it's not administrative
fees or anything like that is going so that that's
also a good thing. One other thing I wanted to
talk about, Chris over this. What two weeks ago, we
had Labor Day weekend and so we had a great
fundraiser with.

Speaker 3 (14:26):
The Ducks the Duck Race. Yeah, a lot of money
was raised.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
I don't know exactly how much in terms of that,
but a lot of money. And as you know, it
takes a lot of money to run not only a program,
but a successful program because you're feeding these kids, you're
buying them different things, and really making them feel special
to be a part of something.

Speaker 4 (14:50):
Sure, and that Duck Race has been such an integral
part of our community and the festival for such a
long time. Optimist Clubs did a great job of running
that in the past.

Speaker 3 (15:01):
Unfortunately they just ran out of empire. They weren't able
to do that.

Speaker 4 (15:04):
It was absent for a year or two or three,
I don't know exactly four years it was absent. The
Sophamori Touchdown Club stepped up and took that by the
reins and they're bringing back you know, not only is
it a great fundraiser, they're bringing something back to the community.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
Then, in my opinion, was missing at the festival. Oh absolutely,
And this has been a great festival this past year.
The weather help. That was gorgeous. I think that help.
And you know, a couple of times I was down there.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
With the booth and I would you could just see
people with their smile taking their five or.

Speaker 3 (15:37):
The twenty and going, oh, it's back.

Speaker 1 (15:39):
And you know, really, I think a lot of people
have more fun naming their dog than they really do care.
And if they win, I'm sure they do care if
they win, but they had taken a lot of pride
in naming their dug.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
You know, it's funny. I don't remember the naming of
the duck. That was lost on me since it's been gone. Sure.

Speaker 4 (15:56):
I bought ducks actually from your wife, and she said,
what do you want to name your ducks? By the way,
your ducks are numbered, and I said, I would love
to name them one, two, three, four, five. I guess
I was not.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
Creative enough to have any forethought to name my ducks,
but I know a lot of people did fun with that.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
Yeah, And saw the little kids come up and I
want to see the duck, and it was if you
had a chance to be at the river on Monday
at two o'clock when we were dumping those out and watching,
we had a great group of people on the shoreline
watching that. So I know they're looking at bringing that
back next week year as well.

Speaker 3 (16:37):
How do they collect those? I know boats go out
in the river, so we have yeah, absolutely, and we.

Speaker 1 (16:45):
Have our numbers and basically I was told that the
farthest one was about two miles down the river from
where the finish line was.

Speaker 3 (16:58):
So it was a long day collecting those.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
But like I said, going to a great cause, and
that cause is a healthy South Ameria football program.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
Fantastic.

Speaker 4 (17:09):
Hey, we want to to encourage everybody to show up
to the game on Friday. We have the best fans
in the land. Our twelfth man is second to none
in this area.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
That's right. We need you, the boys need you.

Speaker 4 (17:26):
We have a great environment and uh this Friday night's
environment with the festival going on, there's going to be
a check presentation to a representative from Riley Hospital that
will receive money from the South amyon football. I guess
South Ameria High School community as a whole. And it's

(17:50):
also a little lead night, so the little league is
going to lead the lead the team out of the helmet,
so that's always fun to watch. We have the future
sure of the Wildcats leading out the current Wildcats, which
I absolutely love.

Speaker 3 (18:04):
Oh, I think that's great.

Speaker 1 (18:05):
And the other thing I just want to remind everything
everybody is kickoffs at seven, but don't come at seven.
Come early for that festival and the carnival as Christmas
talking about.

Speaker 4 (18:15):
Yes, And also we're going to celebrate cross country seniors
that night, so the opportunity to congratulate the seniors and
those kids deserve a lot of.

Speaker 3 (18:29):
Applause and adulation as well.

Speaker 4 (18:32):
On those cross country courses, fans are pretty sparse, so
it's a good opportunity to get them in front of
an entire stadium of people and get the recognition they deserve.
They deserve that too. They work hard, so I can't
wait to see them. I just want to run over
a quick some season stats that I thought were interesting.

(18:54):
Ben Shryock so far two hundred and fifty eight yards passing,
but he's ran two hundred and fifty nine yards so
in three nights, three games, rather he's almost averaging one
hundred yards a night. Colton Minette one hundred and thirteen

(19:15):
yards receiving, Christian Peace, seventy nine yards receiving. We've said that,
you know, the boys are hard on themselves. I'm sure
they want those numbers to be higher. However, you know,
I think they're doing a heck of a good job.

(19:35):
I'm proud of them. You're proud of him, The community's
proud of them. Their parents are proud of him, and
those little kids that are going to lead them out
of the helmet are proud of them, and they look
up to them.

Speaker 3 (19:47):
And I think that's something that maybe not all he's overlooked. Yeah,
not all.

Speaker 4 (19:51):
Those those high school guys recognize that and realize that
they are They are heroes of those little guys.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
Well, and we can talk from testimony.

Speaker 1 (20:02):
Are our boys that's already graduated two years ago. I
can remember little kids coming up to them and sometimes
when they're back in the stands watching their brother or friends,
guess what, they come up and recognize those guys, So
the real models, and I think that's awesome. The other
thing I wanted to just remind everybody on Friday night,
come bring your seats if you need a back rest.

(20:27):
More importantly, bring your wallet for the tackle Charter cancer.

Speaker 3 (20:32):
That's right.

Speaker 4 (20:33):
One thing that we didn't mention that we should. There's
a miracle minute between the first and second quarter, and
that is super important. Everything revolves around that, and we
love your participation.

Speaker 3 (20:48):
We love your We recognize the fact that you're paying
an entry feet.

Speaker 4 (20:52):
You're gonna buy a gatorade, and you're gonna have to
buy the kids a popcorn at the stands, but throw
a five or ten, yeah, whatever you whatever you can afford.
If you can afford three dollars, that bucket deserves it.
And if you can afford one hundred, that bucket deserves
it because it all goes to a great, great cause
to tackle childhood cancer.

Speaker 3 (21:11):
So we need you. The boys need you, and the
PS we Love You Foundation needs you as well. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
Well, Chris, looking forward to Friday night and I know
we'll be in the booth.

Speaker 3 (21:23):
We'll be in the booth and look so looking forward
to Friday night. That's right. Wildcats on three, one two three,
Wildcats
