The count for Apollo nine.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
Coming up on the launch vehicle side here shortly will
be one of the program computer runs some final checks
of the launch vehicle digital computer.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
This is a test in which.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
We run the computer in the instrument unit of the
Saturn five.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
Through its flight paces.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
This is, we put it in a flight mode and
have it give us readouts on a flight performance to
make some final checks. That all is also go with
the guidance system aboard the Saturn five. Our countdown proceeding satisfactorily.
With these various events going on at the same time,
the close out crew now starting to break up the

(04:26):

Speaker 3 (04:34):
This is launch control.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
This is Apollo Saturn Launch control, a tamount fifty nine
minutes in counting team minus fifty nine on the Apollo
nine count. We are goal for the mission at this time.
Just a matter of some two or three minutes ago,
the Vice President of the United States, mister Agnew, arrived
here in the launch Control center. The Vice President, who
of course is also Chairman of the Space Council, here
to observe the final sixty minutes or so of the count.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
For Apollo nine.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
When the Vice President arrived, he did meet some of
the crews for the upcoming launches, the complete crew for
Apollo ten astronauts Tom Stafford, John Young, and Gene Cernin,
and two of the members of the Apollo eleven crew,
astonauts Neil Armstrong and Mike Collins. In the meantime, three
astronauts in the Apollo nine spacecraft, Jim McDivitt, Dave Scott,

(05:42):
Rusty Swickett, continuing to work on their final checks for
this flight. Mcdivott and Swichet at this time performing some
final checks of the stabilization and control system. In the meantime,
we're starting to bring up our radio frequency and telemetry
checks the launch vehicle. All still going well. At fifty

(06:03):
eight minutes and counting. Our countdown picked up following a
six hour built in and hold at two am Eastern
Standard time this morning and has run very smoothly since
that time. We've now been in progress a little more
than eight hours with the count The first five hours

(06:24):
or so of our final phases of the countdown was
devoted to the propellant loading of the three stages of
the Saturn five launch vehicle. During this period we brought
in close to three quarters of a million gallons of
liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen into the stages of.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
The Saturn five.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
We now have all our propellants aboard. We have a
vehicle on the pad that weighs some six point four
million pounds, the propellants all aboard at this time, and
the flight who are going through their final checks in
the spacecraft. During these eight hours or so that we've
been in the final count all aspects of the mission

(07:02):
have gone very well.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
We had one.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
Questionable item that was a regulator for helium pressure in
the third stage of the Saturn five. We ran several
verification tests and were able to determine that a pneumatic
control module in the third stage is capable of performing
its intended functions and.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
We are able to proceed.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
This module plays a part in preparations for the second burn,
particularly of the S four B the third.

Speaker 4 (07:31):
Stage of the Saturn five.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
Other than that one minor aspect, which was verified by
some tests during the count all other aspects of the
mission have.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
Gone very well.

Speaker 1 (07:42):
The prime crew for Apollo nine was alerted in their
countdown as planned at five forty five am Eastern Standard
Time this morning. They then went down the hall from
their crew quarders at the Kennedy Space Center and had
a final physical. They were declared in good physical condition
and flight ready by doctor Charles A. Berry and a

(08:02):
team of physicians giving the final examinations. Doctor Berry commented
that the throats of the astronauts really looked good this morning.
Astronaut Rusty Swipe at the Luna module pilot did request
to take a motion sickness pill, and he did take
that while he was suiting up a little later in
the morning, Following their medical examinations, the astronauts sat down.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
For breakfast in the crew quarters, the usual.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
Astronaut menu on launch day of scrambled eggs, steak, toast,
orange juice, and coffee. They had some seven guests with
them at breakfast. The crew then went to the suit
room where they done their space space suits and then
were called to the pad some ten minutes late, as

(08:47):
we were a little bit behind on bringing the propellants aboard.
The crew departed from the crew quarters at eight five
am Eastern Standard time this morning and started to board
the spacecraft at eight The first member of the crew
across the sill was the commander astronaut Jim mcdivott. He
came across at eight twenty nine am. He was followed

(09:09):
by the lunar Morginle pilot Rusty Schweikert, who sits in
the right hand seat, some five minutes later at eight
thirty four, and the final member, the command marginal pilot
Dave Scott, who sits in the center seat, came aboard
at eight forty am Eastern Standard time. The backup command
Margell pilot astronaut Richard Gordon, was in the spacecraft during

(09:30):
this period, aiding all three astronauts in coming aboard. Our
countdown continued at this time Team minus fifty four minutes
twenty seconds. The Vice President now being briefed here in
the control center by doctor Kurtivis, who is director of
the Kennedy Space Center. The Vice President accompanied by doctor
Thomas Paine, the Administrator, the acting Administrator of NASA, doctor

former Deputy Administrator of the Space Agency, and astronaut Frank Foreman,
who was the commander for the Apollo eight mission. Those
are some of the key people in the Vice President's party.
Our countdown proceeding at this time.

Speaker 4 (10:09):
All going well, whether.

Speaker 3 (10:11):
Is go for the mission.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
Also, we have a forecast of overcast in the Cape
Kennedy area, the Complex thirty nine area, but it is
acceptable for launch. The hatch was closed on the Apollo
nine spacecraft. It's about nine to twenty am this morning,

(10:35):
and our count has proceeded well since that time. We'll
go on an automatic sequence in the countdown. It's about
three minutes and six seconds, and from that point undown
all phases of the count will be automatic leading up
to ignition of the five engines in the first stage
of the Saturn five space vehicle. At the eight point

(10:55):
nine second mark in the count. This will be ignition
sequence start. It will take some eight seconds or so
to build up the proper thrust in those five engines
to give us our planned seven point seven million pounds
of thrust at lift off. All engines should be running
at the two second mark, and we should get commit
and lift off at zero in the count. Well now,

(11:17):
at T minus fifty two minutes forty seconds in counting,
this is launch control Sapolo SAT and launch control T

(11:56):

At this time.

Speaker 1 (12:03):
At this point, the Apollo Access Arms swing Arm number
nine just being removed from the spacecraft, being taken to
its stand by position some eight or ten feet away.
It will remain in this position until we get to
the five minute mark in the count. In the meantime,
we're arming the pyrotechnic devices aboard the spacecraft at this time,
particularly the launch escape tower, which could be used during

(12:25):
these final moments of the count. Once the swing arm
is taken away, all aspects of the mission still going

four hundred and fifty people here in the Launch Control Center,
another fifty or so back in the spacecraft operations here
at KSC continue to work the countdown at this time,

(13:27):
standing by in Houston, of course, and participating in the
count the various teams there at the Mission Control Center
under the Flight director our countdown now some are running
a little bit ahead, particularly on the spacecraft portion and
with the launch vehicle. We're coming up on one of
our final major checks, final checks of the destruct system
aboard the three stages of the Saturn five launch vehicle.

(13:49):
These are checks for the Air Force Eastern Test Range
to assure that the destruct system aboard the vehicle would
be operable if it were required in flight. Of course,
before taking the astronauts would go through an abort sequence
with their Apollo spacecraft to separate from the vehicle. Our
countdown proceeding satisfactorily T minus forty two minutes fifty seconds

The capsule communicator here in the launch control center at
Firing Room two. Jack Lausma, who's a member of Support crew,
the astronaut support crew for the Apollo nine mission, now
in some communication checks from his console with the pilots
on board the spacecraft. Coming up shortly spacecraft wise, in
about five minutes or so, will be pressurization of the

(15:02):
reaction control system for the service module of the space craft.
These are those quad thrusters one hundred pound thrusters in
four quadrants around the service module that are used for
maneuvers in space orbital maneuvers.

Speaker 3 (15:16):
In the case of this particular.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
Flight, on the launch vehicle side, we're gearing up for
some final checks of the power system aboard the three
stages and instrument unit of the Saturn five A power
transfer test where we check the flight batteries but then
return to internal power correction return to external power in
order to conserve those batteries down the final moments of

(15:38):
the count taounus thirty seven minutes fifty one seconds and
counting this as launch control. This is Apollo Saturn lines

(16:05):

thirty four still proceeding satisfactorily.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
With the count. At this time, we now have just.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
Completed our power transferred test. This is a check of
the flight batteries in the three stages of the Saturn
five and the instrument unit. Our early indications are that
the test went well. Will now remain on external power
till the fifty second mark of the count, when we
finally go internal for good. In the countdown, the astronauts
still preparing for the pressurization of their reaction control system.

(16:39):
Aboard the Apollo nine spacecraft, we have the access arm,
the swing arm that enables entry to the spacecraft, located
some twelve degrees from the spacecraft in a standby position.
For safety purposes, we have two high speed elevators locked
at the three twenty foot level. That swing arm could
be brought back in rapid fashion if require, it will

(17:01):
remain in this position and not go back to his
fully retracted position till a five minute mark in the count.
We've now passed a thirty three minute mark, where thirty
two minutes fifty four seconds in counting this is launch control.

(17:51):
This is Apollo sat on launch control the T minus
twenty nine minutes and counting T minus twenty nine, we'll
go for a plan lift on for the Pollo nine
at this time. The lunar module, which will be tested
for the first time with a crew aboard in orbit
on this flight, now has gone on internal power. It's
on the power of its own flight batteries at this

(18:11):
time and will remain in this mode through the remainder
of the contown The crew here in the control center
continuing to monitor the status of the propellants aboard the
Saturn five. We have now close to a million gallons
of propellants the vehicle weighing some six point four million
pounds on the launch pad. The astronauts aboard the spacecraft

(18:33):
now going through the pressure ra pressurization sequences consider their
reaction control system. Most are the thrusters on the service
module that will be used for maneuvers in orbit, participating

Speaker 8 (41:07):
Looking good, up and Roger cut down. Okay, Houston, We've
got one O three by eighty nine point five, Roger,
Pollo nine copy.

Speaker 7 (41:29):
That was Dave Scott giving the onboard orbital parameters one

later through tracking. Fido says, go on.

Speaker 8 (41:41):
Nine, you are go in the orbit. Roger and your
CMC is go. It is validus okay, and Apollo nine

We're going to want to uh track Apollo nine for
a while before we come up with a fine tuned
UH orbital parameter. That one O three by eighty nine
point five was the onboard on board readout from the
command module computer. Uh this Apollo Control at seventeen minutes

(47:04):
Pollow nine now coming into contact at the Canary Island station.

Do that.

Speaker 7 (53:47):
This is Apollo control at twenty three minutes. We've had
tracking through the Canaries now and we've refined the yorbral
parameters better. We're now showing in orbit one hundred and
three by one hundred and two point three nautical miles,
very close to what we were shooting for. We were

(54:08):
shooting for one or three circular. We've had a loss
of signal at Canaries. Now to naner Evil be the

Speaker 4 (01:11:55):
Four two curve.

Speaker 7 (01:12:50):
The Nanor Eve has loss of signal. Now the next
station to acquire will be Canarvon at fifty two minutes
eleven seconds. At Narvin is the go no go decision
point for six revolutions at forty three minutes eleven seconds.
This is mission control, Houston. This is Apollo Control at

(01:13:30):
fifty two minutes into the mission of Apollo nine. Apollo
nine coming up on Canarvon now will stand by life
through Canarvon and honeysuckle.

Speaker 4 (01:14:37):
Hey Houston, how you leading? Paul and nerves?

Speaker 5 (01:14:39):
Uh?

Speaker 8 (01:14:39):

Speaker 4 (01:14:44):
Okay, I'm presently in the backup cam. Check uh step

I'm on lion fire. I got the initial contact and

reading or however I'm reading you up on the other bend.

Speaker 8 (01:17:30):
Okay, and we confined with the site that we did
not get and that's been uh down link on that one.

Speaker 4 (01:17:35):
U resting, oh h jo hope you're spending voice for suggestion.
Let me just give you my configuration here if you
wanna copy that. So okay. I'm on the primary transponder
and uh I'm reading you. Okay, so that's okay. Uh,
everything else is a normal. We're going to call the

(01:17:57):
got the arranging which are I've got the spad oracle
tape in down voice back up, I've got the power
PMP back up to normal, and everything else to uh vanilla.

Speaker 8 (01:18:14):
Uh Roger, Uh I copy that a Pollo nine.

Speaker 6 (01:18:18):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (01:18:19):
Let us all that over. We're gonna have you here
for about another minute uh at Canarvin and then we're
gonna pick you up over Honeysuckle at about uh fifty,
all be just about on the hour, so I have
your span volumes up at that time, o.

Speaker 4 (01:18:34):
Lder and uh be as rised. We're a mushing up
to UH checklist here and uh we got almost everything done.
If you'll go first checks checked out.

Speaker 8 (01:18:42):
Okay, all right, sounds great, and H poller nine you
are go for.

Speaker 4 (01:18:46):
Six daggs four ought to go for sixtysh four and
uh Houston be advised.

Speaker 7 (01:19:06):
I'm gonna uh go out.

Speaker 4 (01:19:08):
Of this uh backup com check configuration here and go
back to.

Speaker 8 (01:19:11):
Normal, uh Roger. Let's meet you over a honeysuckle and
normal configuration just about.

Speaker 4 (01:19:18):
On the hour, Roger.

Speaker 7 (01:19:36):
Canarvon's had a loss of signal. Now we've got about
a minute or a minute and a half gap between
Canarvon and Honeysuckle. We'll come back up at uh acquisition
at Honeysuckle, this Apollo control Honeysuckle has acquired a Follow

(01:20:27):
nine will stand by for conversation through that station.

Speaker 8 (01:20:48):
Follow nine Uh s Houston. Uh so you can i
uh Honeysuckle.

Speaker 7 (01:21:19):
This Apollo control. We're showing cabin temperature seventy degrees fahrenheit,
cabin pressure five point five pounds per square inch.

Speaker 4 (01:21:32):
Uh you're five square uh on s vandaball are you?

Speaker 8 (01:21:35):
Oh right here? That's uh really great. Let's see you're
coming in and uh if if you want to try
this back up, come check again. We can support it.
It's uh dealer's choice. And just as uh we were
leaving Canarvin, Uh the down link compared to be coming
through on the back up.

Speaker 4 (01:21:56):
Okay, Uh, why don't we forgo it right now?

Speaker 8 (01:21:58):
We'll try to check out something quiet dread all right, Yeah,
we can curtains and Apollo nine is this Houston. Uh,

(01:25:40):
We're gonna lose you here A honeysuckle in about forty
seconds and UH, we'll see your hunt's stay in about
three minutes.

Speaker 7 (01:25:49):
Roger US Apollo Control one hour five minutes, we've had

(01:26:36):
loss of signal of honeysuckle. Summarize briefly, Apollo nine was
inserted into an orbit very near what we were shooting at.
We were shooting at one oh three circular.

Speaker 4 (01:26:48):
UH.

Speaker 7 (01:26:49):
Tracking UH through the Canaries showed the insertion orbit to
be one oh three point nine by one O two
point three. That's changing UH a little bit due to
venting from the S four to B, but that was expected.
We're well within where we want to be to continue
this mission. Paulo nine has been given a go for

(01:27:12):
six revolutions. We're now showing cabin pressure five point four
pounds per square inch, temperature sixty seven degrees fahrenheit and
at one hour six minutes. This is Mission Control, Houston.

(01:28:04):
This is Apollo Control. At two hours two minutes into
the mission, Apollo nine is in its second revolution over
the continent of Africa. Its status is go. We have
not yet identified whether there is a problem in the
command module computer. Computer was about four tenths of a
second late on liftoff over Bermuda. In this first state

(01:28:29):
side pass, we did successfully update a state vector. It
is the ground told the command module computer the spacecraft's
position and velocity in reference to the Earth at that
particular time. So we do have a good state vector
aboard the spacecraft. Guidance officers continuing to watch the computer

(01:28:57):
and well for some time yet for he's able to
say whether there is a problem or whether it's or not.
To date we have not identified a problem. Just at
the end of the Canaries pass a few minutes ago,
Dave Scott extended the docking probe for the first time.
His comments, where we've got a good one. It's just

(01:29:19):
like in the chamber, he reported, they could the crew
could hear the docking probe extend. We're still reading good
uh H two tank. Good pressures on the ground in
that uh uh tank that was reading zero.

Speaker 10 (01:29:41):
On board.

Speaker 7 (01:29:43):
Ground telemetry shows the pressures are good. There we had
a UH caution warning light on and the number one
H two tank briefly, however, just w in a second
the heater came on and a light went out.

Speaker 6 (01:30:03):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (01:30:03):
It's been determined that the limits are probably set a
little too high on that caution and warning light in
that parameter and that there is no problem. We have
the tape of all the air ground starting at the
tracking ship Huntsville, through the States and ending at Canary.
We'll play that for you now.

Speaker 8 (01:30:25):
Follow nine, Uh Houston through can Honeysuckle. Uh follow nine
if you Houston through Honeysuckle.

Speaker 4 (01:30:49):
Uh your five square on sb Naball right.

Speaker 8 (01:30:52):
Oh, Rod here, that's a really great but I see
you're coming in and uh, if if you want to
try this back up com check again, we can supported
its uh dealer's choice. And just as uh we were
leaving to Narvin. Uh, the down link appeared to be
coming through on the back up.

Speaker 4 (01:31:13):
Okay, Uh, why don't we forgo it right now? We'll
try to check out some quiet period, all right. Uh
we concur.

Speaker 8 (01:31:51):
And Apollo nine is a Houston. Uh we're gonna lose
you here at Honeysuckle in about forty seconds and uh
we'll see y'll Rodsville in about three minutes. Roger and

(01:32:45):
a Paly nine at the Houston and the clan fel.

Speaker 4 (01:32:54):
Dal cannot maintain.

Speaker 8 (01:32:55):
The violence you wear ring no way a lot.

Speaker 5 (01:32:58):
They was burying in the neigha shouldn't.

Speaker 8 (01:33:02):
Oho. Uh pollow nine, this is uh Houston. Uh you
read through the hontpal.

Speaker 5 (01:33:08):
Are never talent at away far.

Speaker 8 (01:33:13):
And uh poll nine this is Houston through the hot
feal Okay, ulright, alright, alright, coming okay, Paul nine, this
is Houston. You're breaking up pretty badly. Uh we don't
have much to uh it's to pass you here. We're

(01:33:34):
only gonna have you for about another minute and a
half and uh we'll talk to you. Uh yeah, come
across the states and uh pass the day to tea then.

Speaker 4 (01:33:45):
Alright, you.

Speaker 8 (01:33:50):
And Apollo nine is is Houston. If you uh can
read me, we'll see you over the red Stone at about.

Speaker 4 (01:33:55):
Two four.

Speaker 8 (01:33:58):
Are ya, what's the level with plow nine? This is

(01:34:41):
Houston through the red Stone standing by uh follow nine
is is Houston through the red Stone? Uh Roger, Oh yeah,
there's a bell. Uh follow nine is Houston, Roger and
the follow nine would like to confirm that you are

(01:35:02):
in Omni Baker and primary U S band transponder. Uh
Paul nine, Houston, h Roger. It may be a coincidence,
but we lost data just about the time I gave

(01:35:22):
you that transmission to uh verify that Omni Baker. Uh
did you change configuration there?

Speaker 4 (01:35:31):
That's affirmative. We were we were all in Delta and uh,
I just.

Speaker 7 (01:35:35):
Switched it to Omney for you.

Speaker 8 (01:35:39):
I understand you did go from Delta to Baker and
the primary transponder was on. You didn't need to change that,
did you.

Speaker 4 (01:35:47):
That's a negative. The primary was for I went gon
out there, Spoky.

Speaker 8 (01:35:54):
Oh, we're pressing along, Jim and uh, we're you can
anticipate we'll probably have a state vector. We'll wanna uplink
uh over Bermuda vanguard on five ten minutes and uh,
for Rectly's benefit, the backup com check over Carnarvon was
by a square. It came in. We had a momentary
drop out there, but we got it real good.

Speaker 4 (01:36:16):
Oh good you we'll write that one often. We had
all the checkers found except uh the glaphol you tag
that we're gonna do right now and we never let
a pickle down and check you to you right this, you.

Speaker 8 (01:36:29):
Guys will do that, Uh, Roger, we'll right. We have
no data right uh right now nine and the Pollo
nine is the Houston for your info. We do have
our data coming in now solid and Jim for the
bias check. We really we'll get a good one on

(01:36:52):
you after T D and e U. It's not gonna
do as much good on the booster here, Okay, in Houston,
Apollo nine, go uh polla nine, don't you. Uh we
just got a master alarm uh.

Speaker 4 (01:37:11):
Cryo press here on the number one H two tank
Uh to just drop the lower limit here. You might
wanna take a look at that.

Speaker 8 (01:37:20):
Uh rog uh Pollo nine, we copy, Uh see what
we can do for you.

Speaker 4 (01:37:26):
Okay, and the heer uh just came on and it
uh gone back up again, and it looks like it
to just uh take on the master alarmed there before
it decided to heat it.

Speaker 8 (01:37:35):
Uh rog uh Dolla nine copy and follow nine east
and that's probably Sam Soup.

Speaker 4 (01:37:42):
Gets playing with the talents a little bit. Yeah, I
could the.

Speaker 8 (01:38:06):
Allow nine. That's the Houston through Bermuda.

Speaker 4 (01:38:10):
Roger and Houston from Bermusic. Go ahead, Uh.

Speaker 8 (01:38:12):
Roger, we'd like to uh appoint you uh the state
vector there follow nine. Uh we uh there is a
discrepancy between your vectors and ours. We don't have a
real good story for you at this time. It was
uh sort of a slow divergent trend that we would
like to flip it in. There are some funnies about
the lift off time and everything that we're working on,
but at this time, we'd like to give you a

(01:38:33):
new vector.

Speaker 4 (01:38:34):
Okay, everything you want to give us a new vector
on the Uh let me see you sam I or

Speaker 8 (01:39:06):
Uh uh Roger. Uh, you're gonna be checking eh two
purge and uh Paul nine. I have a NAV check
to go along with this state vector. When you're ready

effect on you. And it's this we're trying to trouble

Speaker 7 (02:40:29):
Right At the start of this long pass over the
United States, the command and service modules docked to the
lunar module. Crew UH reported they were hard docked at
three hours, two minutes, eight seconds. Da've Scott UH in

(02:40:54):
recapping UH the events, said that the commanded service modules
came off of the s furb stage with no problem.
During the turnaround, they discovered they had no left translation
from the Service Module Reaction Control System. In troubleshooting that

(02:41:16):
they found some isolation valves closed to one of the
RCS quads. They corrected that came on d docked he
reported the docking was smooth without oscillations. The capture latches
worked as advertised, so we now have the Command of

(02:41:41):
Service modules docked to the lunar module, which is still
within the slaw attached to the third stage of the
launch vehicle. The crew's extremely busy now preparing for the
ejection of the entire spacecraft from the third stage. They're
checking UH tunnel integrity between the two spacecraft, checking the

(02:42:05):
docking latches, connecting some umbilicals, some power umbilicals to provide
power into the limb from the command module. Ejection of
the UH combined Command, Service and Lunar modules is scheduled
at sunrise just past los at Canarvon. We we may

(02:42:29):

Speaker 8 (02:42:41):
The crew was.

Speaker 7 (02:42:44):
Somewhat concerned about the temperature of one of the service
module RCS quads reported that at two hundred degrees. We
confirmed it on the ground, but during this pass over
the States, the temperature has started down and the controllers
here in the Mission Control Center do not believe we'll

(02:43:05):
have a problem with that quad. Next station, the choir

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist
