Il 13 luglio 1031 si consacra la nuova basilica che il patriarca Poppone ha eretto sullo stesso luogo delle precedenti grandi basiliche aquileiesi. L’affresco della nuova abside racconta un trionfo: santi, patriarchi e imperatori per una città potentissima. Ad Aquileia è riconosciuta la supremazia sulle chiese “di tutta la Venezia”. Grande curiosità susciterà nei pellegrini l’alto campanile costruito con pietre dell’antico anfiteatro romano, da cui anche i soldati del patriarca dominano a vista il nord est della penisola.
