Dopo la riconciliazione col papa a Canossa, l’imperatore Enrico IV concede al patriarca Sigeardo l’investitura feudale: ora il patriarca di Aquileia è anche principe di un grande territorio detto “Patria del Friuli”. Saranno 350 anni di storia dominati da vescovi-principi, per lo più tedeschi. Aquileia è più un simbolo che una capitale, mentre i centri politici della Patria sono Cividale e Udine. Il medioevo tramonta tra conflitti feudali e glorie imperiali, ma con l’età moderna il patriarca deve abbandonare il potere politico. Altre potenze dominano oramai in Europa.
