Speaker 2 (00:31):
And now this.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
Week's this week an update on the Star Wars movie slate.
We have a droid who has to keep some secrets,
and an Ewoks movie character returns. Plus Kylo Ren is
gonna tell his story, so let's get to it. And
as if that's not enough, we are also joined by
our special guest for this week's ATG Live, mister Jim Fagan, comedian,
television writer and all around Star Wars fan, to give
(00:54):
us his comments and thoughts on the stories. First up,
there's a Star Wars movie update. According to reports from
Dayan you'l RpK via World of Real. Dawn of the Jedi,
the upcoming Star Wars film directed by James Mangold, is
scheduled to begin filming in late twenty twenty four. Mangold
is expected to start work on the project after completing
a complete unknown which is the Bob Dylan biopic biopic
(01:16):
biopic I Like biopic I'm Going with that set for
release in December twenty twenty four. If production proceeds as planned,
the film may release as early as twenty twenty seven.
There have been claims that another Star Wars project, Daisy
Ridley's New Jedi Order with director Charmine Obeyed Chenoi, has
experienced the delays. However, Ridley recently has stated that the
upcoming film should be expected soon or at least some
(01:38):
details on it, leaving the timeline for the release of
Dawn of the Jedi uncertain. Meanwhile, Mando and Grogu is
currently in production and is set for release on May
twenty second, twenty twenty six. Details about Dawn of the
Jedi remain extremely limited, though it is confirmed to be
set during the origins of the Jedi Order. The script
is being co written by Mangold and and Or writer
Bo Willemon. That's a nice combo. More updates on Dorn
(02:00):
of the Jedi could be revealed at Star Wars celebration
in Japan, perhaps even some announcements on some of the
story details. Guys, what do we think about this? I mean,
if he's finishing a complete unknown, it's got to be done, right.
I mean, it's coming out soon, So I think there's
a trailer.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
I mean I think it's yeah, you know, I feel
like that's already out there.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
I think for me this is good news. We've talked
a lot on this show about Star Wars. We're ready
to get Star Wars back in the theater. I'm thankful
for streaming, I'm thankful for TV, but we've kind of
gone too far in that direction. So the the fact
that there's movie things happening to me is good news,
exciting news, a step in the right direction. I'm gonna
(02:47):
throw out to Jim. Jim's a writer, Jim's a TV guy.
You know, where does this hit for you? Hearing that
you know there's movies, you know, seemingly in the pipeline.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Yeah, well, I do agree with you.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
I am excited to get back to move I hope
that they aren't about to overcorrect in the wrong direction.
I think that's something that we all probably love as
Star Wars fans. Is actually a little bit of scarcity
every once in a while. So hit me with the
movie a year please, by all means that sounds good,
(03:17):
But I don't necessarily need the Infinity saga. I'm I'm
so yeah, I'm excited. I'm excited by this stuff. And
I'm especially excited by this project because it is so
distanced from everything else that I feel like, if you
can't tell your new and original Star Wars story however
(03:37):
you want to in this sandbox, where can you do it?
Speaker 2 (03:41):
So that that is also exciting.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
Yeah, And I'm you know, I'm excited too because it
sounds like, you know, of all the movies that were
announced Mando and Grogu at all, this what was it?
Was it in London? I guess Mando Grogu is the
Daisy movie and this movie, this one, to me, felt
like the least likely to happen. If I had to
pick one that I felt was not going to actually
make it through, I thought would be this one. But
(04:05):
man and that Willhelmon and mangle together. Wow, I mean.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
That that feels like up there in the same level
as getting Ridley and you know Willeman, you know, getting
that and or kind of taking that writer's thing up
a notch, taking that director's thing up a not like,
you know, let's add some weight to.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
It now, did I hear though? That? I feel like
buried in all of that.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
Good news is that the Daisy movie's hitting a bit
of a snag because I'm a I want to know
what happens next guy, and so that I get nervous there.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
I think there's been some Yeah, there's been a little
bit of concern, a little bit back and forth on
on where you know, I think it was supposed to
be further along than it is right now. But I think,
you know, I think that's the problem that Star Wars
runs into. Lucasfilm runs into specifically, is they announced things
and people don't. I mean, you get it. We get
(05:01):
it because we have friends in the business like yourself.
Things like if you say a movie's gonna be done
for twenty twenty six, like, don't start banking on it yet,
wait till things get going. It takes for script's done, right,
I mean, how many times do they go through script
edits and things like that.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
You know.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Yeah, No, to take it back to sports ball, this
is everybody putting the Jets in the Super Bowl, you know,
during the off season.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Exactly. It is.
Speaker 4 (05:27):
There's a lot of excitement around these announcements, and I
don't want to, you know, put a damper on Comic
Con or you know, Star Wars celebration or any of
that stuff. But I work in development right now. I've
been in development for TV for the past three years,
and we call it development.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Hell you know, you you they.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
Take your babies out back and get rid of them,
you know, like regularly, so you just kind of have to,
you know, wait till you're sitting in the movie theater
eating the popcorn. That's when I believe when the trailer
comes out, I believe it. That's usually when my spikes well.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
And I just don't want them to tell me, like
if I boil it down to my everyday life level,
It's like, don't tell my kids we're gonna do something
until we're really going to do it. Because if I
say on Monday, hey, this weekend, we might go wherever,
and then that changes. I messed up because I told
them we were going and they're like, wait, we're not going,
and then they're mad and they're asking me fifty times
(06:23):
like don't say it until we're basically there or we're
walking out the door to go do it.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
That's on.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
We've gotten a lot of that over the years, you know.
And it's not just Disney and Star Wars, it's Marvel.
We've gotten that in a lot of different places. But
it's a lesson, like, let's get some things farther down
the line before we go. Hey, guess what we're working on.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Yep, for sure.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
At this summer's d twenty three XBO, it was confirmed
that Alan Tutic will reprice reprises role as k T.
S O in Indoor season two Yes, previously cut from
the first season. This marks the first official news of
the character's return since January twenty twenty one. Udick recently
discussed his return during New York Comic Con, revealing the
challenges of keeping his involvement secret. Tudic shared with Collider
(07:08):
that it has become increasingly difficult for actors to navigate
what they can and cannot say about their roles without
spoiling details. He hinted at secrecy surrounding K two's role
in season two, stating quote, I can't tell you how
much I still have secrets despite the mystery, Tudic praised
and Or showrunner Tony Gilroy, calling him a big brained
and skilled writer. Tudic teases that it will be interesting
(07:29):
for fans to see K two s so return to
the gritty and Or world, known for his sharp humor. Additionally,
it was revealed that Ben Mendelssohn will return as Or Syncronic,
despite previous comments that he had not been contacted. Speculation
has also arisen about the potential return of other Rogue
one characters, including Madge Mickelson's appearance at Star Wars celebration
in Japan twenty twenty five as and Or season two
(07:51):
prepares for his anticipated release in twenty twenty five. Guys,
the first thing i'lluthorw to you, guys, I want to
hear what your thoughts are there. There is a comic book,
a one shot that tells the story of and Or
and K two getting together. Are they throwing that out
the window or do you think they're gonna they're gonna
READO the comic book? Because the comic book, I think
takes place in two b by which would be the
(08:16):
third arc of this season. But I mean Star Wars
do are the gonna stick with the comic book stuff?
What are your thoughts?
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Isn't there a hierarchy that's like.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
It's all the printed word is real until screen. Yeah, lands,
and if it's on screen, whatever they say there goes.
So I feel I feel like they'll pull from it,
but if they want to deviate, they'll deviate without too
much kerfuffle.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
I think so too. And I think we've seen that
with animation. We've seen that. You know, there was some
stuff with Clone Wars or bad Batch and you know
young Canaan Jarris and there was a conflict between the
comic book that told the story of his master. So
we're gonna get that, but live on screen that's the
trump card. That's the one that wins. That's the one
(09:04):
that you know, supersedes everything else.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
And we saw how well it went when Kiati Monday's
birthday swift shifted, So you know, like threatens, there's.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
One thing I like to do.
Speaker 4 (09:15):
It's scream about something before I've seen where it's going
or how it ends.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
Yeah, I mean, you know, why why movies?
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Why watch movies? Coming back?
Speaker 3 (09:25):
Get preemptively mad about it.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
Yeah, I think when we go back to the movie
theater to watch Star Wars, we should all agree every
twenty minutes to go out into the lobby just to
scream about what's going on so far, you know, the
little breaks for us to that's a commanding experience, like.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
Yeah, it's like a new version of Rocky Horror. We're
not gonna get up on stage and reenact it. We're
gonna go out in the lobby, get pissed, and then
come back inside and go all right, what's next?
Speaker 1 (09:51):
Right, it will live stream it and we'll tweet about it,
and we'll just we'll just be so angry.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
Yeah, stream about what we're owed. But still the point
is K two s O want K two s O.
We want Alan Tu Dick, we want Michelson, we want Critic,
we want all of these characters back. And I think
we talked about this last week, Pete, because the Michelson
story was one of the new stories last week. Yeah,
it makes sense. It's not you know, it's not cramming in.
(10:17):
It's not fan service like this last third I mean
of this, you know, the way this second series is
going to go, those characters are all going to be
in play like it's literally leading up to Rogue one,
which is what we were told, So bring it on.
It just makes it better because we love that movie.
We love those characters. This is a win across the board, and.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
There's clearly a history in Andor that we see with
K two and Chanasy and that I gotta see kat
story we want, And what I'm hopeful for is that
just like Disney gave us this new three po head,
that I get a K two s so ahead because
he's my K two is my favorite character to come
out of the Him and Critic are my two favorite
(10:58):
characters to come out of the Disney era.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
So if you want to talk really quickly about fan service,
I feel like Cassian and Or and K two's relationship
is the best kind of fan service because it when
they come on screen, you get the feeling of Han
Solo and Chewbacca without the moment of like, here's Chewbacca
in a pit.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Oh let's go get him.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
You know, you get that feeling, you get that echo,
and it feels good.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
It feels like you're.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
In familiar Star Wars territory, right, And that's that's the
kind that I like in all.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
This and it's funny because the co pilot is the
funny one in this case, right is the humorous one.
And what I love too is with the and Or series,
we've seen why and Or are so serious and so
you know, like, you know, very just the character he became,
and so to see how.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
He's a humorless jerk we find.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
But it seems like he's had kind of a shitty
road to get there, so well, we might let it go.
We might let it exactly exactly. At the twenty twenty
three D twenty three expo, it was revealed that Star
Wars Skeleton Creue will bring back a species from I
don't think it was twenty twenty three. I think it
was the twenty four Yeah, D twenty three expo, it
(12:13):
was revealed that Star Wars Skeleton cru will bring back
a species from the Battle of Endoor. The television show
The Teak. Director David Lowry confirmed in an interview with
Empire that Teak, the super speedy natives of Endoor, will
appear in his episode using practical effects. Lowry shared his
excitement about working with hand puppets, describing the blend of
(12:33):
ancient and cutting edge technology as magical. Lowry emphasized the
importance of practical effects in his episode, teasing that puppets
will be a central element this work. This marks the
first time a character from the nineteen eighties e Wok
movies is returning to Star Wars Live action, though through films,
though what am I saying here? Returning to Star Wars
(12:54):
Live Action, though the films remain non canon. Star Wars
Skeleton Crew is set to premiere on Disney Plus on
December fourth, following a group of children who are swept
into an adventure across the galaxy. News stills have been
released by Star Wars dot Com showing the young cast,
including actors Robert Timothy Smith, Ravie Cabot, Kanyers, Carryana Crater,
and Rihanna Kiras Armstrong, navigating alien planets, space sports, et cetera.
(13:17):
The series remains strauted in mystery, but teases from Empire
magazine have fans buzzing. Fans can look forward to Skeleton
Crew premiering soon, continuing the exploration of the Star Wars universe.
Fans of the Ewok movie or not, like, just let's
be honest here, did you like him? Did you not?
Speaker 2 (13:33):
Like him.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
What are your thoughts.
Speaker 4 (13:36):
I have only seen scenes, including of this character this
week that it popped up, and it's I.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
Think that I got to give it a give it
a shot.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
It looks like a good time. It looks like I
kind of think my kids would enjoy. So I don't know,
you guys tell.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
Me it's I'm all for it. I'm one hundred percent
in favor of it. I think it is. It's the
right kind of fan service. It makes sense it's in
a movie or a show, it's you know, puppets. I
love that they're excited about bringing back practice flex. But
at the same time, like we've gotten other versions of this.
(14:09):
We've gotten the Mando rifle from the animated from the
holiday special that shows up in book are in Mandalorian,
we get you know, the other salacious be crumb aliens,
you know, being roasted over a spit and in cages.
Like there's stuff that they have done along the way
for fans of our age and of some of those
(14:29):
older you know Star Wars generations. Because it is fun
and it is silly, and it's you know R five
D four showing up in Mandalorian. It's it's fun why not, Like,
let's do it. And if somebody else sees it and
it's like, holy crap, that thing's cute. I don't know
what that is, but I like it. Good for them too,
Like this is just plugging in things that make us
or help us remember why we enjoy Star Wars. I
(14:52):
think is important because sometimes we get caught up in
what is this new thing? I don't know? Oh wait,
I remember that it draws us back in. Yeah for sure.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
No, And I'm also super excited about there being so
many puppet in the show. I mean it's, uh, that
feels to me like we're gonna go back to old
school Star Wars, and I think that's gonna be really
important for the whole saga at this point.
Speaker 4 (15:17):
It's also if I could just talk to people making
new Star Wars projects, because I know you're all listening.
This is winning the press tour one oh one. We're
gonna do practical puppets. We're gonna go back like talk
about this stuff and people get excited and you're setting
yourself up for success like that. To me is this
is just a very as we all know, volatile, uh
(15:41):
jacked up fan base for all sorts of good and
bad reasons. If you're like, hey, don't we all miss puppets,
You're gonna win every time you do that.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
It's true.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
And I think, you know, something like the Teak and
just something I mean, let's face it, Neil the little
blue elephant boy.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
Yeah, is.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
It's ridiculous, and it's so Star Wars that people need
to remember that Star Wars is not as serious as
some people who've grown up now remember. And it's okay
to have a goofy little elephant dude which is not
a max Rebo species apparently, which is cool. That's great,
give us more species. Another one. He's got a you know,
(16:24):
cute little side haircut and a sweater. Bring that and
then throw Teak in there running around right and.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
It does two other things just real quick. I think
also that when we got Mandalorian and we got the volume,
like the earliest versions of the volume, we're like, holy crap,
this is amazing and look what it can do. But
then we started using the volume right away for everything,
and so then as we watch shows, it became spot
in the volume, so it became this new So bring
(16:54):
the practical back in helps draw some of that focus away.
Helps us go, oh, there's a balance here, and and
certainly in Star Wars balance is important. It also creates
the opportunity to do things like when Force Awakens was
coming out and they were doing all the press stuff
before the movie came out. What was one of the
big key moments. They rolled BB eight out on the stage.
(17:15):
They had a robot that was at a comic con
across the stage. So let's have a press tour for
Skeleton Crew where you have a teak puppet, or you
have a you know, a Selacious be crume alien or
something else that can pop up. And it adds that
element of fun and whimsy and play. It's not just oh,
we created all this on a computer screen.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
Yeah, I agree.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
All right, Perry got one more? What we got yet?
Speaker 1 (17:40):
One last story? And Marvel Comics has announced a new
series titled Star Wars Legacy Evaders, set after the Last Jedi.
Written by Charles Sewell and illustrated by Luke Ross, the
comic will follow Kylo Ren as he seeks to fulfill
Darth Feeder's legacy. The series will begin with Wren in
his role as Supreme Leader of the First Order, exploring
(18:02):
his dark obsession with the Sith Lord, which means takes
place between number eight and number nine. The first issue,
releasing on February fifth, twenty twenty five, will take Kylo
Ren to Mustafar, the site of Darth Vader's infamous fortress.
The storyline tees' secrets hidden within the fortress and the
reappearance of a mystery figure from Kylo's past to guide
him on his quest. The series also promises to revisit
(18:24):
Kylo's connection to his family history on Tatooine in future issues.
Charles Sewell, who previously wrote the Rise of Kylo Ren
in twenty seventeen and the Darth Vader Run, explained that
Kylo is at a deeply unstable point in his life,
having recently killed his father, fought his uncle, and nearly
killed his mother.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
It's a rough week.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
Struggling with anger and confusion, Kylo turns to his grandfather's
dark legacy for guidance. Interior art for the series has
been shared on star Wars dot Com, offering fans a
first look at Kylo Wren's journey. I want to hear
Jim's thoughts before I talk about my thoughts.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
On I'm Yeah.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
Charles Stool's last Kylo Ren thing. Jame, what are your
thoughts on comics and hearing this story.
Speaker 4 (19:08):
Well, I'm a little worried from what you just said
that I'm walking over on a catwalk over a pit
to meet Kylo Ren, and I think it's gonna go well.
But I will say I love Charles Steele's Vader comics.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
I've read all of these.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
Vader comics are excellent, Yes.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
And I personally so it's combining this idea combined. I
haven't seen I haven't read the first Kyla Rent series,
but this idea combines the two things that I love
in Star Wars Marvel comics, which is Chuck Suwele's Vader,
and I like the the comics series that fill in
between films. I like all of those different attempts. I'm
(19:45):
especially eager for more of those in the sequel era,
where I just think it's gonna I like those movies,
but you know, you're out on an island sometimes when
you like those movies. So I just think it's gonna
bolster them more and more and more the more of
that stuff that we get, So I'm excited.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
That's good.
Speaker 3 (20:03):
You're absolutely allowed to be.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
Pete.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
I'm glad to jump in because I want to give
you kind of the final spotlight on this. I am
famously not that much of a comic book reader all,
you know, deference to our friend Chris Ryans, who is
a huge comics guy. I'm want a friend of the show.
I've read bits and pieces of the Vader Down comics.
I've read you know, I've seen some of the screens
(20:28):
from some of the original Kylo series. It's just not
for me. But guess what Star Wars isn't just for me.
So the people that are excited about this, I'm excited
for you. I will also say this, Charles Soul's record
is unimpeachable. He's a fantastic writer. He tells great stories.
He's been on I mean he was on with us
for Potathon a couple of years in a row. Like,
(20:50):
go for it. That's awesome. I'm so excited. I probably
won't read it unless it creates such a buzz that
it reaches that like tipping point where I have to
and then great, I'll be in for it. But I'm
excited for my comic book friends that are going to
dig deep into this story.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
Yeah, and I'm with you, Nick, and that I don't
read a lot of comics.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
A lot of you know that.
Speaker 1 (21:11):
However, I did read one comic series and it was
the Kylo Wren series, and I have to say no offense.
And again all the praise to Charles Swell. I mean,
he knocked out of the park with the first High
Republic book, which is the only High Republic book I've read.
But and the Vader stuff is excellent. I love the
(21:31):
Vader series, but the Kylo Wren comic book is Honestly,
it has turned.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
Me away from comics.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
And I'm sorry to say that, Charles, but my goodness,
and it's just the writing is so weird to me.
It's like but again to the point that Nick made,
and this is the biggest challenge, I think being a
Star Wars fan today is like I don't like something,
and I'm spending more time talking about why it's okay
that I don't like something, versus like, actually, yeah, exactly,
(21:59):
but I really did not. I would have to say
the Kylo Rene comic book is to me unreadable, Like
that's as far as I would go.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Oh, I love it, but I.
Speaker 1 (22:09):
Also know but I know other people there are a
lot of people that are like, that's the best comic
series I've ever read. So that being said, I'm a
little nervous about him continuing the Kylo Ren story, especially
if he brings back the Wren and the Knights are
Wren based on the way he wrote them in those.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
Those those stories.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
But you know what to next point. If it reaches
a tipping point and we all get into it, then
you know, I'll check it out. I'll definitely read the
Wikipedia entries on it for sure.
Speaker 4 (22:39):
You know, it may that's I love that. It may
be not to not to beat his head horse, but
I'd be curious if this is a heavier, harder lift
because the Knights of Wren is a much more largely
unwritten bit of lore, which is where I try to
avoid using on Yubna. But but uh, you know, know
(23:01):
so everything he does is a timothy's On level of invention. Yeah, right,
so in the Vader comics, it's more like, can't really
break Darth Vader as long as you stick to a
few rules.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
Uh So it's interesting. Now I got to go read
it and come back on.
Speaker 1 (23:19):
Yeah, you you should definitely read it, because to me,
it's not Kylo it's not Luke, it's Snooke and it's Wren.
So those are the characters that are just I mean, yeah,
it read it, and we'll have a conversation because it's
I would love to have a conversation, you know. In fact,
maybe maybe we get we get Chris Ryan's our comic
(23:40):
book expert, we get Jim on and and let's talk
