En aquest context, Tàrraco té una ubicació privilegiada a Hispània: davant del mar, però prou connectada a l’interior. De fet, l’any 27 aC, l’emperador August va iniciar una reforma administrativa en la qual Tàrraco va passar a ser la capital de la província Hispania Citerior.
No és d’estranyar, doncs, que una de les grans vies tingués parada en aquesta ciutat: la Via Augusta. Es tracta de la carretera més llarga de la Hispània romana: aproximadament 1.500 km que anaven des dels Pirineus fins a Gades, l’actual Cadis.
Què en sabem d’aquesta via, una de les més transitades i estudiades de l’antiguitat? Què va suposar per a Tarragona?
