Speaker 1 (00:00):
Creativity is an addiction unplugged because we will always say
yes to creativity, totally uncut because we all make mistakes.
So let's turn it into a tool. This is arrow unplugged.
I am a poet, one that just happens to write
in a forest. My forest is the Rainbow Forest right
here in South Charlotte, North Carolina. When I enter this
forest or any other collection of trees, I never know

(00:21):
what I'm going to write about. These aren't my words.
These are the lyrics from Rainbow Forest, chapter number three
hundred ninety six. November fourth, twenty twenty three. We've just
experienced the first real cold week of the approaching winter.
The deer with their deep dark coats, the squirrels endlessly
racing to collect whatever they can to repair their homes

(00:42):
while gathering nuts and whatever else they eat. But this
is Carolina. We still see the tree jumpers, even in
the midst of all of that chilly weather between December
and February. I study them because of survival. It's always
been a huge interest due to my childhood fear of
face the world. My father did while battling in World
War Two. He always reminded us to think beyond what

(01:06):
we assume we know. I took him seriously in the
way of watching all the animals of this forested floor,
the hawks, to the waterfowl, even the spiders who tend
to disappear inside our homes when Mother Nature is sending
out a mighty, mighty cold winter wind. Surviving in an
age of constant change, knowing what's beyond what we think

(01:29):
we assume. Look at where we stand today. Don't just
stare at it. Study it. You can't predict what is
no longer in your control, But I will ask what
are you losing control of and could it have been halted?
Losing control of your present place of survival? What is

(01:52):
your plan? What is your next step? It's not about
running to the grocery store to get bread and milk.
The next time that we face a real survival, it's
going to take community. But is your community warm enough
during these winter months? I'm Eryl. These aren't my words,
these are the lyrics from Rainbow Forest
