Ecclesiastes ten to one. Dead flies cause the oint to
send forth a stinking savor. Ointments come from ancient times,
a valuable mixture of oils and perfumes. It was actually

used for healing or anointings. A single dead fly falling
into it spoils the entire batch, making it absolutely useless
because of the foul smell. Over time, a fly in
the ointment became a metaphor, a small defect that ruins
or spoils something once thought to be good, a minor flaw.

My mother used to warn us all the time as teenagers,
you better stay away from those kids. They carry the
scent of a fly in ointment. What what? Oh? Mom?
The funny thing is she was usually right. Even Shakespeare
used the phrase in the sixteen hundreds. There was even
a fly in the ointment, some little impinment that mars all. Now,

if you had never heard of the phrase before, how
do you expect to know that Shakespeare was actually saying something.
In the eighteen hundreds, it was Charles Dickens that put
up his words. It finally became universal in the twentieth
century thanks to being used on a lot of TV
