Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Arts Blast on the Air. It's a podcast,
it's a radio show, and it's an Alexis Skill presented
by Ballet Vero Beach, Riverside Theater Arts supporting the arts
in Florida. I'm Willie Miller and every darn week I
get to talk to people in the arts about the
arts on the Treasure Coast and beyond. Arts Blast on

(00:24):
the Air is proud to be supported by Ballet Vero Beach.
Subscriptions for the exciting new season are available online now.
Single seats on sale November first. Remember this year you
add the Nutcracker on the Indian River earlier. It's December
eleventh through the thirteenth, and it's in a new venue,

(00:45):
Riverside Theater. Ask about the new VIP add on experience. Plus,
Nutcracker for All has some new options too. Learn about
everything at Ballet Verobeach dot org. And now on with
the show. My guests today Alist Mahovivich and Lynn Jackson.
At least, let's talk to you first. You are with

(01:06):
the Environmental Learning Center.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
I am.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
You've been around the arts in many forms for so
many years here in in Vero Beach. Are you an artist?

Speaker 2 (01:19):
I am an art appreciator. I I you're right. I
have been in the art community, and you know, carrying
through to ELC, we've got the two galleries. I love
what I see, I love what I hear.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
And you don't dabble. I do not dabble, not at all. Well,
not tempted. I am tempted.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
It's one of those things, you know, one of the
one of these things slowed down.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Yeah, don't win for that at least, but I really do.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
I this community is so creative in so many different ways,
that isn't it. I'm definitely fulfilled. We have been so
fortunate because I mean, you how long have you been
in the arts? How many years? Well, I've been here
in Vero Beach for over twenty years, and you know,
I was with the Cultural Council and you know, with

(02:13):
working with the art community in that for several years.
And like I said, up at ELC an unlikely place
to find gorgeous art, but we do have two art
galleries there, and so it just it spills over into
every little bit of life here in Vieo. So I
appreciate it. Well.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
The Environmental Learning Center is a great place, has always
been a great place for people who enjoy art to
just immerse themselves in nature, which is so much a
part of the art world in this area. I'm going
to say probably in all of Florida, but I think

(02:52):
we're pretty much known for the nature arts. Yeah, so
galleries come. Yes, yeah, really really thrilled.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
We had a quiet summer, but we just kicked it
off last Friday with the artists meet and greet. We
have a an unusual exhibit of fiber arts and it
is the Florida Gator Group. They are a group of
fiber artists and their their exhibit is not your mother's

(03:25):
rug hooking, maybe your grandmother's rug cooking. It is a
traditional form I would you know, look in it to
folk art, which is both utilitarian and artistic, so form
and function, gorgeous, gorgeous art in the form of rug hooking.
And it's been curated by as I said, it's the

(03:48):
Florida Gator Group, curated by Susan Lavender, Sheila Lockheed, and
Manny Lopez. And you just wouldn't believe what these artists
have done.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Well, No, I recognized those names, and I would definitely
believe that this is a fantastic show. It's really just
they were into fiber art.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
Yeah, I can't wait to see this.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
It's gorgeous.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
Interestingly, not to take away from this one at all
for people in the southern end of Arts blast Land,
there's also a fiber art exhibit at the IG Center
at Martin Arts, I think the Martin Arts Guild. I'll

(04:30):
find out more. I'll have it in Arts blast Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
It actually it is a pretty broad spectrum. There's textiles,
and I know we have a couple of fiber artists
here that work in textiles. But this is specifically rug hooking,
which was totally different. I mean I was familiar with it,
but once I saw it up on the walls.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
Wow, Well my mother was a I never thought of
her as a rug hooker, but she did rug hooking
with a frame and a punch needle.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
A this is different. This is pulling, pulling fabric through
and in. You know, traditionally everyone from sailors who were
board on ships to homesteaders would do this. And as
I said, form and function, it may be kept this
space warm or it was a hearth rug, so it
served a purpose, but no reason to not make it beautiful.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
Yeah, So who are these people. Are they all women?
I can't say that, okay.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
But there are you know, I would say at least
five or six artists. And there are some traditional patterns
that they use as well as uniquely created patterns, more
modern patterns.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
It's okay. And where is it again? Witch Galleries?

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Both of our galleries. We have a small gallery right
off the main welcome center area, the Tidal Gallery, and
then up the up the ramp we've got the Lagoon
Gallery as well. Just gorgeous space, lots of natural lighting. Great,
great to observe art with that natural light coming in.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
And they're doing this hooking demo on what date exactly?

Speaker 2 (06:10):
A demonstration. It's free to everyone. October the nineteenth, I
think that's a Saturday, from two o'clock to three thirty.
So everyone is welcome to come on out and just
observe and learn about this art form.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Is that free or is it free with the admission?

Speaker 2 (06:27):
It is free.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
It is free, okay, No reservations required, Nope, nope, Just
come on out. October the nineteenth, two o'clock. Hey, where
is the Environmental Learning Center.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
We're at the foot.

Speaker 1 (06:40):
Of the Wabaso Bridge.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
So, as I tell people, if you're heading up US one,
don't go over the big bridge. We're just off off
to the right, big sign Nature Center, which I know people. Oh,
I've seen that sign all the time. Please pull off
and come and visit us at ELC.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Yeah. Remember long time ago there wasn't a great big sign. No,
it was a little easier not to find it. But
once you're there, yes, you're You're glad, you.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Are, you really are. We're on Wabaso Islands, so in
the middle of the lagoon. We've got the kayak launching,
the canoes pontoons in addition to about two miles of
walking trails. It's a day trip. You can bring a lunch.
We've got some really nice picnic areas and an aquarium
and a touch tank, the only touch tank, I'm told

(07:29):
in Indian River County.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
So I haven't thought about that. Yeah, I'm aware of
them a little farther down south, but I hadn't even
thought about it. Here, well, that's right here, Willie at
the Environmental Learning Center. Yeah, November December. Exhibit November December.
That is a mix of Cuban artists called the Cuban

(07:54):
Season and again curated by Manny Lopez and really excited
about this. It's gonna be something a little bit different
typically are we ask our artists groups whoever's coming in
to make it a you know, a nature theme or
something inspired by nature. So I really want to really
looking forward to seeing what goes up on the walls.

(08:16):
November December, Okay, when does that open?

Speaker 2 (08:20):
November seventh is our artists meet and greet, So come
on out for that great mix mingle with the artists,
ask questions, get to know them, little cocktail, little nache
thrown in there is mixed for a really nice, nice
afternoon November the seventh, four o'clock.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
Okay, yeah, I did not have the time. Thank you now,
twenty twenty six. Exhibits twenty twenty six.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
So excited. Mark and Cherry Schuman, oh right. Wildlife Photography
will be their exhibit. They're going. They're also planning some
really special events, so stay tuned for that. We don't
have everything locked in place, but they will be creating
some workshops around that in addition to their Of course,
we always do it a meet and greet to open

(09:07):
any exhibit, and so looking for that in January and
also in January, Derek Gores. We'll be exhibiting and we're
thrilled to have Derek there with his mixed media collage arts.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
Yep, he's been at Gallery fourteen quite often, very popular.
He has his own gallery up in I think.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
Melbourne, Melbourne somewhere. Yeah, okay, and that is we don't
have a date. That's also in January, okay, ye ye.
Is there a website where people can get details?

Speaker 1 (09:41):
Thank you for asking, Willie.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
I'm happy to share that that is discover ELC dot org.

Speaker 1 (09:49):
Okay. And can people make reservations for things like canoe
trips or pontoon rides or can they make reservations in
general online?

Speaker 2 (10:00):
Absolutely, and reservations are necessary, especially for the pontoon trips,
which we go out twice a day. Our sunset pontoon
excursion on the Wild Lagoon is very popular, really beautiful,
and people are welcome to bring food and beverage on
board as long as they take it off with them,
you know, make it special. It's seas up to sixteen people,

(10:23):
so it's a really really nice We've got a nature
guide on board. Usually the captain has some some things
to add about his or her experience on the lagoon.
As well, so it makes it makes it for a good,
good interesting trip.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
Okay, two hours. You've got a bunch of boat tours
Pelican Island, Sebastian Inlet, and others. I want to note
that there are age and safety requirements, so you need
people need to check in to find out, yes, kid,
is there a lower six.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
Years six years and up? And that really has to
do with the size of the life fest and safety.
As long as you can navigate the stairs okay into
the pontoon. Okay, that's an old ridge. I can tell
you about that. All right.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
We don't have time to talk about the Disney Movie
Nights and the Low lagoona poalooza.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
With You'll be hearing about it, okay, online, online, everywhere.
We'll be talking about it for sure.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Okay, once again. The Fiber Arts Show is on through
October through October and the rug Hooking demo is October nineteenth.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
October nineteen, two o'clock.

Speaker 1 (11:37):

Com and we are back with ourts blast on the
air and now we're going to talk about Welcome to Boards.
We have Lynn Jackson with buro Beach Theater Guild. Lynn,
I heard a rumor that there's a great show at
the theater Guild. Is that true?

Speaker 6 (14:35):
Well, the reviews are in from the first weekend and
that is very true. We're getting ready for our next
two weekends. We close on the twenty first already. Hey, yes,
we run three weekends in September and the show is
such a fun, laugh out loud farce. The actors are splendid,
ten of them, and I was very fortunate to cast

(14:59):
some of the best. We have actors who you have
seen in many shows. For example William Steele, who just
starred in a chorus line. He is in it. And
then you have an actor Kirsten Peterson who has not
acted since she was in seventh grade. And if you

(15:20):
are just coming for the first time to see these performers,
you would not know which one was the more season.
They are excellent. The teaming in this show is phenomenal.
I feel like they're so bonded. The timing of this
show is very tricky. It's similar to the timing that

(15:42):
if you remember seeing the show lend me a tenor so.
There's a lot of doors. People are running in and
out of doors, and their snappy repartee is just so
conocomical and their aunt. We have some character actors that

(16:03):
will absolutely blow your mind on stage, and I won't
give that away. We are so thrilled to have d Rose,
who I'm sure that many many people in this community know,
as she retired a few years ago, drama leader of
that department at the Vera Beach High School thirty years. Yes,

(16:26):
and now she is our board president. Under her direction,
we have so many people coming in because they want
to work under her leadership. I am thrilled to have
her as my board liaison for this show. Every director
has a board liaison. I just happen to be fortunate
enough to have the president is mine. So yes, it's
been wonderful. We have many things coming up at the

(16:50):
Guild as well. Next week we have our auditions already,
believe it or not, for a Christmas Carol that da is.

Speaker 1 (16:58):
Can I go back just a second, did you actually
say that the name of the show is it is Rumors?

Speaker 6 (17:06):
Yes, it is a Neil Simon comedy.

Speaker 1 (17:09):
Okay, all right, now we can progress to the are
these the dingle guys at Christmas?

Speaker 6 (17:15):
We are going to have our auditions next week for
a Christmas Carols directed by d Rose. Dancing on the
Dingle is a two day event. It is running Thanksgiving weekend.

Speaker 1 (17:30):
Ah.

Speaker 6 (17:30):
It was written by Larry Strauss. Now Larry Strauss, as
you may remember, was with the Guild for years and
years and was quite instrumental in helping us keep our
doors open. D Rose actually is in that show, and
I understand they put it on last year at another

(17:52):
venue and this year we're fortunate enough to have it
come into our venue.

Speaker 1 (17:57):
Okay, so this is Jacob Craig going to be involved.
My understanding at the time when it was at McAfee
Hall at First Presbyterian Church that Larry and Jacob with
the music. Rab Volski was there.

Speaker 6 (18:14):
Yes, I believe it's all the original acting group from
last year.

Speaker 1 (18:20):
Oh boy, don't miss it. I got to tell you
and everybody, don't miss it.

Speaker 6 (18:24):
I have my tickets. I'm thrilled. The other thing that's
coming up that is very interesting. So the first time
we've ever done it, So Robin Volsky, it was a
great makeup artist. He is doing a show actually on
the twenty fifth of October, just in time for Halloween,
where he takes a live model and transforms it into

(18:46):
a monster. So it's a very inexpensive show, and there's
music involved in it. I know that it's supposed to
be very exciting to watch his art come to live
before you.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
He does incredible makeup stuff, yes, and he does do
workshops and other educational things as well. Yes.

Speaker 6 (19:08):
So that's the first time we've had.

Speaker 1 (19:09):
That, Okay, And when when is that going to be?

Speaker 6 (19:12):
That is October the twenty fifth.

Speaker 1 (19:14):
Okay, And that's right kind of it in mid stream
with mel Brooks Young Frankenstein.

Speaker 6 (19:23):
Yes, so Melbrooks Young Frankenstein will be running in October,
and that is on our main stage, okay.

Speaker 1 (19:31):
And then the Christmas Carol now a Christmas Carol the musical. Yes,
that is not the same as Dancing on the Dingle, correct, Okay.

Speaker 6 (19:39):
Christmas our main stage and that runs three weekends, and
Dancing on the Dingle is just a two day event
Thanksgiving weekend November twenty ninth and thirtieth. Tickets are available
on our website for everything, so visit our website at
Vera Beachtheaterguild dot com.

Speaker 1 (19:55):
Okay, can we go back once again to rumors? That
ends on September twenty first, correct? Correct?

Speaker 2 (20:03):
All right?

Speaker 1 (20:03):
And where should we go from there?

Speaker 6 (20:07):
Where should we go from there? To talk more about rumors?

Speaker 1 (20:10):
Okay, what are the rumors about? So or you can't
tell me?

Speaker 6 (20:16):
Well, you know, you can read it online the intro
basically the overview, if you will.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
So.

Speaker 6 (20:24):
So, this farcet takes place at the Deputy Mayor of
New York's home for his tenth anniversary party. Couples arrive
to find that the hostess is gone and the host
has been shot. They don't see him, and they're trying
to figure out what the heck happened. So that's about

(20:46):
all I will tell you about that.

Speaker 1 (20:50):
I'm going to have to go see this right Oh please?

Speaker 6 (20:53):
Yes, our show is doing very well, I tell you.
Many people talk about how fabulous it is for us
to have so many musicals. That is true. I come
from a very musical background. Myself was in musicals in
my younger days. Musicals have the luxury of stringing together

(21:14):
the dialogue with songs. A straight play does not have
that luxury, and in many respects it's as difficult or
more difficult because of that. So the actors have to
really have that chemistry. They have to bring together this

(21:36):
magical storytelling. And these ten actors are all magical storytellers.

Speaker 1 (21:43):
I will say that I understand that Vero Beach Theater
Guild has become such a apprized I would say role
that people come. Actors come from all over. People who
are working back said, everybody wants to be at the
Vera Beach Theater guilt. Would you say that's kind of true. Yes.

Speaker 6 (22:07):
I had a hard time casting for one of the roles.
So I reached out to one of my fellow directors
who directs in South Florida, Joe Russo, and I said, hey,
I need this character of Glenn. He gave me a
few choices. One I contacted he was on the high
seas and I asked him to do an audition tape,

(22:32):
which he did on the cruise ship in the middle
of the dining room and sent it to me. And
he is the character of Glenn. So I tell you
he is about an hour away, so he has to
make that trip back and forth four nights a week,

(22:53):
and that goes on for the better part of two months.

Speaker 2 (22:56):
Wow.

Speaker 6 (22:57):
I always tell people this is like a part time job.
You're really involved in a show for a quarter of
your year.

Speaker 1 (23:06):
Wow, that is a major commitment.

Speaker 6 (23:09):
It is two months of rehearsals and one month basically
you're in the run. Add on a little thinking time.

Speaker 1 (23:17):
Okay, we're going to have to quickly dash through. We'll
go to the website Viureobach Theater Guild dot com for
the schedule. But your black Box after dark for mature audiences,
you have the last five years starting November sixth through
the fifteenth, correct, correct?

Speaker 6 (23:35):
Okay, and that is Ben Erman's show, right ranks.

Speaker 1 (23:40):
He's done the whole series, I think hasany.

Speaker 6 (23:42):
Ben is in charge of our black Box. He does
a marvelous job. He's also on our board of directors.

Speaker 1 (23:46):
Okay, we don't have time to talk about the Theatrical
Learning Center, but we'll do that another day. In the meantime,
we'll just talk about those rumors once again. The dates.
It's December. Here're September twenty first.

Speaker 6 (24:01):
Correct, We end the twenty first. We have tickets still
available for this Thursday night and it runs the last
two weekends of September.

Speaker 1 (24:09):
Okay, great, we are out of time. That's Vero Beachtheater
Guild dot com, Lynn Jackson and Elise Mahovlich from the
Environmental Learning Center. Thanks ladies, great to talk to.

Speaker 6 (24:21):
Thank you so much, will you.

Speaker 1 (24:22):
