Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to Arts Blast on the Air. It's a podcast,
a radio show, and an Alexis skill. It's all presented
by Ballet Vero Beach and Riverside Theater. They are the
arts supporting the arts in Florida. I'm Willie Miller and
every week I get to talk to people in the
arts about the arts on the Treasure Coast and beyond.
(00:25):
Arts Blast on the Air is proud to be supported
by Ballet Vero Beach. Subscriptions and single seats for the
exciting new season are available online now for your holiday
stocking stuffers. And you can't go wrong with tickets for
the Nutcracker on the Indian River. It's earlier and in
a new venue this year December eleventh through the thirteenth
(00:46):
at Riverside Theater. Ask about the new vip ad on experience.
Learn about everything at ballet Verobeach dot org. And now
on my show, my guest today Elis Holich from the
Environmental Learning Center. We're going to talk the whole show
away about ELC and what's going on and winter Green
(01:12):
night Lights, night lights, Yeah, and I'm going to ask
you about camps too. Did you come prepared to talk
about winter camps. We have us mini camps, yes, we do.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
And let's see do I have the dates here?
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Okay, well you know what, let's get let's get back
to what's coming up for the holidays. Yeah, okay, and
that is Winter Green night Lights only December twelfth and thirteenth, right, correct.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Correct, just the two nights. It's a Friday and Saturday night.
We've had other you know, lengthier Winter Green night Lights,
but we like we've compressed it this year. It will
be first come, first serve basis, so we're not pre
selling any spaces on the canoes, and that's really to
assist everybody in case the weather turns.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
So we really excited.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
On the first night, Friday night, at five o'clock, the
Vera Beach Wreck Department is bringing in their aerial antics
performers five o'clock for that, so come early for that.
And then when the sun goes down, the campus lights up,
the Mangrove tunnels light up with twinkle lights, and we'll
be paddling canoeing people. We do all the work through
(02:26):
the Mangrove tunnels, and we'll of course have campfire with
s'mores and music.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Strolling the campus. We're excited about it. Talk about the
Environmental Learning Center a bit. It wasn't Maybe it seems
like not very long ago, but it was probably very
many years ago that the fire hit the campus and
the job at Barb slit and everybody, the board, everybody
(02:55):
involved came to bring it back and better than ever.
It's an amazing place. What do you focus on? Kids? Families?
Speaker 2 (03:06):
The primary the founders of it was really about bringing
kids into nature, you know, education appreciation, teaching kids how
to be good stewards of nature. So hands on feet
wet is the driving force and I like that.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Yeah, yeah, I like it too.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
And as in my position as outreach, I am out
in the community among adults, and so I always want
to give adults the opportunity to get hands on feet
wet also on our on our campus. But yeah, we
love having the kids. We have a standing contract with
(03:47):
the school district for third and fourth graders, which we're
trying to expand to even more more grades that every
kid gets to come up on a field day. And
and again while I'm out there talking to adults, I
hear from from you know, twenty thirty somethings I remember going.
I mean it is an indelible impression that we make.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
And I've said this before it and I even hate
to admit it. I can't tell you the last time
other than out of my front yard when I have
been out in nature. Maybe I need to get up there, maybe, Willie.
Maybe we're here for you.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
We like to say we're your backyard in the event
you don't live on a sixty four acre canvas in
the middle of the lagoon, surrounded by our beautiful lagoon habitats.
We are there for everybody, and members especially they free
admission for twelve months, but it's we try and make
it very affordable for families. For SNAP recipients, it's free
(04:54):
admission as well. We have library passes so you can
take out a book of the library. You can also
get a day pass from the library to come on.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
Up to ELC as well.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
So we like to make it as easy as possible
for people to come on up and just take a walk.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
It's a beautiful campus. I see you have added a
lot of things. One thing, okay, we are recording this
the day before Thanksgiving. A little disclosure, but we have
to mention first of all that you're closed Thanksgiving. Yes,
and then Family fishing Day, Yes, that's coming up very quickly. Yes,
(05:34):
tell me about that.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Well, it's just that once again, bringing families together, getting
kids out onto the lagoon, teaching them a skill one
of the other things that I enjoy watching, but we
do when we've got the kids up, getting them onto
the lagoon, into the lagoon, teaching them to paddle to
(05:56):
canoe is a skill and so but yeah, the family
fishing Day is going to be a lot of fun.
Are there is there an age recommended range? No? Okay, no,
no age restrictions. Just families come on up and we
provide the bait and the tackle. I guess that's what
(06:19):
it's called. I'm not a fisher person. How about fish
removal from the hook? I can't promise anything about that,
but it will be a catch and release. I can
tell you that always always catch and release.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Okay. And it is Saturday? Is Saturday, November twenty nine, Yes, okay, yes,
I should remember that. It's my birthday. Yeah, oh, happy birthday,
thank you. I thought it was. I thought my birthday
was Sunday. Okay, well a whole weekend of birthday anyway.
It's eight thirty to ten thirty at the Environmental Learning Center.
(06:55):
You said there's no preregistration. I would certainly register for that. Okay.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
They can go to the website discover ELC dot org
so we can be prepared.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
People walk in. Okay.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
I have to get the worms right. Yeah, like you're
digging them right again. Not a fisher person. I don't
think they'll be tug up. I think.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Okay, let's let's get back to Winter Green night Lights. Yes,
what's the history. You know, I don't remember when it started.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
I want to say it's at least five years now.
And you know, we used to have it over six nights,
four nights. Now we're down to two, which is good.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
It's it is.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
Very intense for the staff to cover it from the paddlers,
and I can tell you they do a whole lot
of work that night, backing back and forth to all
the staff.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
We have the campfire, as I said, s'mores. Uh.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
The aquarium is open with the touch tank, and we
just welcome people to come on up and walk around.
The campus is lit. We don't get to enjoy the
campus at night very often, but it is lit up
and it's beautiful.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
I know it is. Yeah, everything about that place is
very special. Yeah, okay, let's go back to the special
performance of the aerial Antics folks. Yeah, that's pretty where
where have you ever seen?
Speaker 3 (08:34):
No?
Speaker 1 (08:35):
Yeah, I've seen it online. I haven't seen it in person,
have you? I have, I have.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
It's pretty amazing it. They're young gymnasts here with the
ver Beach Recreation Department, and just as it is aerial Antics,
they construct platforms and things and the ribbons that they
swing on just like I think of circus as they
come down in ribbons and they're doing acrobatics mid air
(09:06):
and also on the ground on you know, some matt acrobatics.
It's it's really spectacular and for these young gymnasts, it's
it's really exciting for them to be out performing like that.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
I'm quickly looking down my notes to see if I
have a date for the uh Are Atlantics show that
not not for you, but for they perform for the city,
the county for residents. But I don't hmm, I don't
have the date here and I don't have uh hmmm,
(09:39):
I don't have a website to look either. I think
maybe google it.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
I would say the Vera Beach Recreation Department, Vera Beach
dot gov or don't quote.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
Me on that one. I'm making that up. It's what
I do. But certainly the Recreation Department can port you
in the right direction. Yeah, because that'll that will be
a great show. I know it is. Okay, let's let's
go back. Now.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
That's at five o'clock on Friday the twelfth, not on Saturday.
So if anybody wants to come out and see that
one day only for the Winter Green night Lights, right,
they're coming up to perform and enter only the one night.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Just the Friday night, not the Saturday night. Okay, that's
pretty noteworthy, it is. It is. Okay, where is the
pavilion stage? Where is it?
Speaker 2 (10:28):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (10:28):
I bet it's in the pavilion, it will be Yeah,
where is the pavilion? And now you get to it.
It's on campus.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
It's right as you as you come into uh, you know,
the campus of of ELC. It's right on the right
kind of can't miss it, but it is. It's a
little tucked away. It's gorgeous though once you walk in.
It is also the area where we have some unstructured play.
We have things for kids to climb on, things to
swing from, things to dig into and just to iagine
(11:00):
one of the two imagination stations, so around the pavilion.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
Okay, we'll take a break in just a second, but
will you come back? Can you address the nature nook? Sure?
Love time that gift shop love too, It's that time, yes, Okay.
In the meantime, I'm going to take a break now
and talk about Riverside Theater. Is that okay with you?

We are back with Artsplast on the air. I'm Willie Miller.
Elise Mahovlich is my guest from Environmental Learning Center. We
have so much to talk about. During the break, you
handed me three big pieces of paper. We haven't even
hit on these things. Would you want to talk about?
Lagoon Palooza?
Speaker 2 (14:15):
First, Laguna Palooza as much fun to say as it
is to be that. It is an extension of what
we used to do for Lagoon celebrating the lagoon. So
it used to be Lagoon Fest. Last year we expanded
it to include four bands throughout the day, our eco partners,
We'll have some artwork and it's just going to be
(14:39):
a day of fun, of exploring. We would do some
mini trips on the lagoon, mini pontoon trips, mini canoe trips,
as well as just wandering around the campus and or
hanging out and listening to really great music local bands
as well. Laguna Palooza Nature and Music Festival. That's January
(14:59):
twenty first, for one day only, right, one day only, hmm.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
Okay, discover ELC dot org will have all the information.
It certainly will free. Right, Yes, A quick parking with
all these people coming to all these wonderful events, what
do you have for parking?
Speaker 2 (15:17):
Well, first, I encourage carpooling. Okay, good for the planet,
but no, we have plenty of parking. We too. We
have not just off campus, but we have plenty of
campus parking.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
Okay. That's lagun and Pelooza again, January twenty fourth, ten
to five. Now you have besides nature nook the wonderful
gift shop. There's an art gallery as well. We have
two art galleries.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
The lower gallery is in the title and the title
gallery was just right behind the welcome center.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
Currently Roger Hammer.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
We are exhibiting Roger Hammer gorgeous, gorgeous artwork of macro
photography of wildflowers. And in the upper gallery. Our Lagoon
gallery is a special exhibition six artists from Miami. It's
called a Cuban Season and it is so vibrant, so colorful,
(16:11):
and it's multimedia, so it's a mix of textile art
as well as traditional paint and other things. This is
a great, great show, Yeah, it is, but it ends December,
December nineteenth, I believe that's coming down. Yeah, it's a
quick show, but you know, through the holidays, but coming
(16:34):
right on the heels of that, going through February. Will
be in the upper gallery, Mark and Sherry Schuman will
be exhibiting their wildlife photography. They've been traveling the world
for the last few years and they've got some really
really special special things to show us. In the lower gallery,
Derek Gore, who is a celebrated artist here in the area,
(17:00):
and so he'll have his own exhibit, and and you
have the paper you can tell me say. We always
have artists meet and greets when we open and exhibit
and so, and those are always fun. We have music,
we have food and special cocktails and and just what
it says, meet the artists and stroll around, enjoy the
(17:23):
exhibit and enjoy.
Speaker 1 (17:25):
Okay, So for the Cuban season, we have passed that
reception already, yeah, But for the Derek Gores and the
Mark and Cherry Schumann meeting Greek January night, yes, yes,
that's four to six pm.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
Ye, And that is free, okay, No need to register,
just show up. We do like registration because we know
we do have we do have, and so it's nice.
We want to make sure we have enough. We're not
serving dinner, but it's nice to have a little And
as I said, we always have signature cocktail.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
And so come on up. And that is January ninth,
four to six pm. Mark Schumann's he was well known
in Beroe Beach. They were. He's part of the Schumann
family who founded the newspaper many many many years ago,
his father. Yes, and he's been very active as a photographer,
(18:29):
I believe ever since I'm not sure if he did
any other art, but that's that's been his big theme.
This This should be good.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
He is very talented photographer, has a great eye.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Also, while he's exhibiting, he and Sherry, his wife, Mark
has written a written a book and documented homelessness in
America and it's called Homeless in the Land of Plenty.
And on February eighteenth, he'll be giving a talk presenting
his book. For five years, he traveled the country Miami
(19:02):
to Maine, California to DC documenting homelessness in America. You know,
not a not a happy subject, but it's an important one.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
And need a light shine shine on it for sure.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
And he's talented writer, talented photographer, and I'm really looking
forward to hearing him present his book and talk about
what he found.
Speaker 1 (19:25):
Okay, But in the meantime, January ninth, four to six,
opening reception for Mark and Sherry Stuman and the Derek
Derek Yeah. Wow. Now, Derek has been at Gallery fourteen
many times and he has his own studio and gallery
I believe in somewhere in Brevard County. I'm not sure
(19:47):
if it's Melbourne or Titusville. I think he's in Melbourne
probably yea, yeah, okay, so that's going to be exciting, yeah, yeah,
very much. But in the meantime sort of through the
month of December, a Cuban season that's going to be wonderful.
Yes to the nineteenth okay again, Please go to the
(20:07):
website discover ELC dot org to get all the details
on dates and times. Yeah, okay, Oh you know, let's
finish the season March and April. John's Island Club. Tell
me about that.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
John's Island Art Club. We did have them last year.
And this community, this art community, as you well know
Willie is so talented. There is just a treasure trove
of artists here. I don't know, maybe it's the water,
don't know what it is. But John's Island has an
(20:44):
art club, as do many other communities. But we'll be
exhibiting their works in March and April.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
Okay again, details on the website and the opening reception.
Write this down March twenty six, yeah or thirty p
come on out. Okay, what have we not hit on?
Speaker 2 (21:03):
Well? I did get a date for our holiday break
camps and that is December twenty second and December twenty
ninth for kids. Out of school parents maybe had a
loss for things for the kids to do. I will
say our summer camps were we were at capacity by
the second week. We have the most amazing educators, the
(21:27):
most engaging, the most enthusiastic, and the most knowledgeable educators.
They bring the kids around the campus. They get them
onto the water, could include an a pontoon trip. We
get them in the water literally, we have a pond.
They do same, knitting, netting rather and just some really
(21:47):
cool cool things, you know, scientific. I guess we get
a little sciency looking at in univer lagoon water under
a microscope.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
It's it's a revelation, grooming, grooming the good citizens, sure
of the future. Yeah, it's a great, great idea. There's
no better way to do something like that to make
aware adults than by starting when their kids and making
(22:17):
it fun, hands.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
On, agreed, agreed. What we understand, we care about, what
we care about, we protect and starting early or at
any age is always.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
A good thing. Okay, I'll say again, I think a
lot of people assume that because we are here on
the river, on the ocean, wonderful weather most of the time,
that we all take our kids to do these things
and do them ourselves. But that's not the case. We
(22:48):
all get busy with our lives just like everywhere.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
Yeah, but we also do need to take that break.
Nature heals. I can attest to that, and it's good.
It's relieve stress, relieving stress in our lives. If you
don't have any tool for that, we are here for you.
It's come up for an hour, come up for the day,
bring pack lunch. We have picnic tables, places to sit
(23:13):
and just appreciate this gorgeous, gorgeous land that we are.
Speaker 1 (23:17):
There are there annual memberships.
Speaker 2 (23:19):
Annual memberships, they're twelvemonth memberships that would be free admission.
Family membership is just sixty dollars. That's two adults and
children under eighteen are free. Free admission to certain events
as well, and discounts on others. Discounts on the camps
for instance, discounts on pontoon and the paddling the kayak
(23:44):
or canoe as well, and discount in the Nature Nook.
Speaker 1 (23:47):
I have to say, I hear stocking stuffer in those
words you're saying.
Speaker 2 (23:53):
I'm calling it the Nature Noook Eco Boutique. That's what
I have to get that whole thing in.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
Yeah, we have about run out of times, so we'll
mention again the Winter Green night Lights, December twelfth and thirteenth,
five to eight thirty pm at the Environmental Learning Center. Elise,
thanks so much for coming up, Willie. Thank you my pleasure,
of my pleas always. Okay, now let's see I was
(24:21):
going to thank another guest, but my other guests didn't.
Speaker 2 (24:23):
Come, so I'll just say happy holidays to you and
thanks you.
Speaker 1 (24:27):
Thanks to YouTube. Okay, and as always, thank you listeners
for joining us again this week for Arts Blast on
the Air podcast radio show and Alexis Skill, all presented
by Riverside Theater and Ballet. Vero Beach covering the arts
online and an Arts Blast, the free emailed weekly Florida
Arts news magazine. Join us again next week. I'm Willie Miller.
(24:51):
Thanks for listening.
