Speaker 1 (00:03):
Ash's Rugby League Podcast, Episode eight. My name is Lee
Addison and my name is John Davidson. How are you
join you with the parents over? Very well, mate, yeah,
very well. At the moment the sun is shining and
it stopped raining. So the English summer has been one
of the so far, one of the best summers in

(00:23):
the last decade. I would say, so your parents are
probably thinking they're in Tasmania right now. Well, yeah, I
mean if it's not to any degrees in clearing sunshine,
then is it mate? If you're not in the pool?
Each fortnight joined myself and John for analysis, news, interviews
with guest history lessons, We're good at that and wats

(00:44):
more every fortnight to help get your appetite for the
twenty twenty five series between England and Australia, which I
think is the biggest international series for decades. I've voted
something today the rugby league coach basically imploring the hammer
Tom I have asole fit out and paying heart to

(01:08):
Skips for one more year. I'm playing the Ashes because
it's one of the biggest things they'll play it. And
the comments that I've had underneath asking me if I'm
on some kind of crack. So you're in Australian, you've
lived in England for a long time as a journalist,
but where would you put the ashes in? Just just

(01:31):
before I answered that with those comments, so they were
saying that's a bad thing, that they should stick with Astraya,
or they should they should, it was more, it was more,
why do I think the Ashes is a big thing? Ah? Yeah,
I mean I only posted this two hours ago, so
it's still in his embryonic stages. I mean, some of
the people on Face on my stuff comments, I think.

(01:56):
I think part of it is a generational thing. I
think those who are like us in their forties and older.
The Ashes means a lot more because of the history
of it. But because it hasn't been played since two
thousand and three, and because which some people seem to
forget England Great Britain haven't won it since nineteen seventy,

(02:17):
it's probably lost some of it's cachet compared to origin,
compared to World Cups. I think that's part of it.
But it still has a lot of cachet, it still
has a lot of prestige and look just look at
the Lions, the Sorry, the rugby union lines. We won't
go much into a Brisbane who was coaching the Lions.

(02:39):
The British Rugbillygue captain of Many Well, one of the
greatest rugby league players that England's ever or great Britain's
ever produced, Andy Fool, who was playing for a fallback
for the Wallabies. I don't know soly No, Tom Wriot,
former Manly c in the Centers was. He was a

(03:05):
rugby league player formerly the Roosters. So look the cache
around the Ashes in any sport, Rugby union, rugby league
cricket is big, so rugby leagu' is no different than that,
and there is, you know, the history to back up
the fact that. Ticket wise, I think we're headed for

(03:27):
the biggest ever crowds in any ASHES series ever. So yeah, well,
I think obviously there's been a big PR push this
week in London for it, but Everton sold out, headingly
sold out. I think we're all going to be over
one hundred and fifty thousand in terms of total ticket sales.

(03:49):
I reckon we'll hit Wembley seventy thousand, which would make
it the biggest ASHES ever in the UK. At least
it's not you probably is the biggest ashes, so the
facts back it up. You use the word cache a
three times and I'd just like to applaud you. It's

(04:12):
the first time I've heard the word cash three times.
It's on my world the paper. Yeah, you must have
been somewhere. I'm an Englishman, has coached at and our
old clubs and lives in Australia a long time John is,
as we said, an Australian journalist. I'm a strange Aealist
who's lived and worked in the UK covering rugby league

(04:35):
since twenty twelve. You can get me a Rugby League
Coach dot coma tay you, email me at Rugby League
Coach dot com to tay you, or get me on
socials at Rugby League Coach or I will use this
as a segue to get your X in that by
excellent being a next girlfriend, I mean Twitter. My Twitter

(04:57):
is at our coat Dominette, and we sometimes and tweet
each other. Johnny, Yes, I'm at Johnny D Davidson on
x a Patreon at Rugby League dot com long Reads
also to buy the Balls podcast and across different newspapers
and websites, The Ipaper, The Guardian, League Express and so

(05:18):
on in the next fortnight when the next Touches podcast least,
it'd be a legend that you will love. As at
Manley Seagles fan Noel Kleil, I can admit, I'm proudly
admit when I was well seven six five it was

(05:39):
one of the players posters that I had up on
my wall. I had I had a crusher, I had
a faddy, I had a Cliffy. You had a crusher.
You had a cross on crusher. Eighty seven Grand Final
one of the high points of my childhood. Glorious Grand
Final victory over the Canberra Raiders. I wonder how often

(06:01):
Russian Fatty had been in the same sentence. Now, the
big news at the moment in Ash's context is Kevin
Walters like we eat Australian Test coach for the three
match series. The It's not been confirmed as of our
recording time, but I have no doubt Touches the way

(06:23):
these things go. As soon as we release that he
will be announced. Let's assume now he's been announced, how
do you feel, as our residents Australia. Well, it'd be
nice to have a coach and hopefully we've got some
hotels and fields, but too. But yeah, it's a little bit,

(06:46):
a little bit of flighting. I mean, I think out
of the candidates I would have been I would have
been happy to see Freddie Fitleer get a job. I
wouldn't happy to see Whan get the job. I think
someone with the surname of Addison was throwing out DESI
you know, I think that would look I don't think
Kevin Walters is the worst coach going around, but in
saying that, I don't think he's had a huge success

(07:10):
where he's been obviously the Grand Final twenty twenty three
with the Broncos. But yeah, I think he's a players coach.
He's not a tactician. He's a He's a main manager
and the players will be in control and maybe that'll
work well for a rep team for the Kangaroos after
a long season. Well this comes into my territory somewhat.
I've been very critical to Walters as I would certainly

(07:35):
prefer him to Brad Fit because at the end of
the day, he has got more club coaches under his belt,
judged a Broncos who's also the Catalan's coach. He's been
in as system for a long time too. At Storm
and the Broncos plenty of apprenticeship typele there I was

(07:59):
CHRISTI of Kevy as coach of Broncold was actually critical
of him his culture of Queensland, but their too tep.
He was inheriting the side Queensland was going to lose
some of its Big four name with kron First and Slatersmith,
so they gradually often that time mm hmm. He also

(08:25):
won the first two series of his tenure from memory,
and Queensland actually won. Everyone talks about the eighth straight.
Queensland actually won eleven and twelve over that time, which
is phenomenal, and that four I can't remember if Kevy

(08:46):
coached the fourth. I think I think the one you're
referring to was the COVID one and Wayne stepped in right, Yeah, maybe,
I think it was a dire Telegraph journalist whose name
being Richie. Yes. He famously said it was the worst
coins of all time, which I don't think it was,
and it went on and won the series. So I

(09:07):
mean we might be getting our dates slightly mixed up.
Is Kevin did okay in Origin? He did okay? Yeah,
he did okay. It's done better than Daily the start,
and he then went to the Broncos and if we
had to look at it from what actually happened, he
did oversee improvement. He took over from the Sea Bull

(09:29):
Wooden Spoon and two years later than in the Grand Final.
So and the Bees appended away from winning it as well.
So yeah, so as much as we're I think everyone
can be a little bit underwhelmed by Kevy's appointment. And
I certainly understand that that mode Number one, He's got

(09:50):
lots of good in there too. Number two, I've never
heard one player, never mind people in the game, says
an break Bok. Yes, you mentioned man management and I
think in three games at the end of the year,
what the NRL players want is a nice balance between

(10:13):
working hard, not overdoing it, enjoying the fruits of being
on tour, and that is something that mal had to perfection.
I remember being in Warrington for the twenty thirteen World
Cup with the USA and we were hearing stories about
the Australian Cap, how Tim Sheens was making players do

(10:34):
X Y Z all the time. When they beat us
in the quarter final, all the players that weren't playing
did a conditioning session at the end on re expect
up field and apparently Tim Sheen's got to stressed at
one point it just took himself off the two ka
I met with James Esko j Tivoievitch on the twenty

(10:54):
two woke up and Teddy was the captain and he
was talking about how relaxed things were and how how
how good the preparation was, how happy they were and
how confident they were at the same time and also
nervous enough to think that they could lose a World
Cup if they're not careful. Yeah, I think you know,

(11:16):
that's that's what you need to pull off with it
because the Australian Yeah, I think that is a big
part of it, because you're away for you know, five
six weeks, amnth whatever. It's cold, it's raining, it's miserable,
you're in a foreign country. The pressure is on to perform.
But at the same time, you've had a long season,
so you know, while your your club teammates are in

(11:38):
Bali or kencun or you know, Italy, you're you're slogging
it out in Saint Helen's or Castleford or some other
god forsaken Yorkshire hell whole which you know all about.
Thee So yeah, it's a big it's a big part
of not pushing them to how they don't need a
Bellamy or or a Manage to flog them. They need
someone who will get them together, get them connected, get

(12:01):
them happy, because as we've said, they've just been bashing
the shit out of each other in Origin, so then
they demand any wounds that are and get them and
so I think heavy from that point of view, he
will do that because, as you said, all the players
like him. I think the bron goes he gave the
players too much leeway and that was perhaps an issue

(12:21):
for the drop off. Well that's that's over time. I
mean on four week tour at the end of the year.
I mean, even if he's the coach for the next
three years, he won't necessarily have to improve the Australian players.
I think he's a skill set. I don't think reached
Pol necessarily were bored under Kevy, or if they did,
they certainly regressed the year after. So oh yeah, I

(12:41):
applaud the appointment. To me, it's a common sense. Now again,
you segued into it their Origin game three. You and
I are predictions on the line. You were you wanted
to delay the pot because you didn't have my dehernas.
I said no, let's put them on the line, and
we were both hideously wrong. I sniff Queensland ambush. It's

(13:04):
just the way Origin goes. I mean, you know, bringing
back Papali, picking at debutante in center, and then obviously
the sad news of what happened with Cameron Monster's father.
It was just the emotion for Queensland. They seem to
thrive on that. Yeah, and it was I mean, I

(13:24):
can't remember exactly was that something like sixty sixty five minutes.
They didn't make a mistake. I mean in terms of
they were almost perfect in terms of their completions and
the way they played it was pretty You know, as
a new stat Welshman, you've got to applaud Billy Slater,
applaud to Queensland players because they were amazing. And I
think if you're picking a Kangaroo's team right now, you
wouldn't be picking a huge amount of New so Weals players.

(13:49):
We'll get to the team soon and we'll keep winking
it back to Origin as we record today on one day,
the twenty first of July, all like it could have
been nearly the twenty second of June in Australia, the

(14:09):
paying Haas Tino Fas Malue and hawmicel hamicl Taboi Fi.
Have I got that right? I think, I think so. Yeah.
I think Tina, you might have been off a bit,
but you were right in the other one that wasn't
too bad. Though I didn't you know, I didn't butcher it.
They're not going to be happy in the streets of

(14:31):
happy it that way, no, but they would appreciate me trying,
you know, like I think, I don't think my accent
frankly with some of these exp with some of these names,
any who strong males that they're thinking about going over
to Tamo discuss. Yeah, I think I think the it's

(14:54):
been in the works for years. I think every year
som you know, it was the same last year with
them with Roger two have asked to check and Nan
and I. Every year they're kind of pool of talent grows.
So I think there's there's a strong pool to the
heritage of their parents, of their grandparents and what that brings.

(15:14):
So it would not surprise me if all three of
those players elect for for Toea Samoa and not the
Kangaroos and we can link our conversation. They probably don't
know how big the ashes is, what can be So
that takes us to the team. Okay, pick a team,

(15:35):
And I wonder is this is the racy theorist in me.
Do you think when they realized Kevin was link that
story out again to the media, I don't, Yeah, I don't.
I don't think it's that it's that sinistermate. I think
I would have convinced them, Yeah, I mean I think

(15:58):
I think now there would have been diferent conversations. I
think those sort of things go on throughout the year.
I think if we're looking at what uh Tino would
have been coached by Kevy, the Hammer probably would have
been coached by Kevy. Obviously Paint Half Now, whether relationship

(16:18):
or not, I don't know, because you always get these
things about paint ass leaving or not being Yeah, you
don't know how these these things are. In terms of
I think tinail and pain, if they go with some
that is a blow for Australia. I think the Hammer
in terms of the back line, I think the Kangaroos

(16:38):
have the depth. I don't I think that you know,
he's a freakish player. Don't get me wrong, but I
think the depth in the back line is pretty strong.
I think it's the front row where Australia potentially has got.
Let's have a look the mall the journalist. Do you
know them all? I do know Tony Adams, I do.

(16:59):
He puts a team on the eleventh of July, which
I think days after the final Origin and mal Meninger
the form the Mole had Bill and Edwards at full back.
I'll have who does Johnny Davis. That's a tough one.

(17:21):
I mean, if you're looking at form, you're looking at cladform.
Tedaska has been a better phone than Bill Edwards this year.
I'm going to throw a curveball in no warm up
game Queensland at coach mm hmmm. One of the smartest
things to do might be to pick Queensland Spine the

(17:43):
game one well, I think fall back and then Monster six,
Dard and seven Harry gregnine. If you're picking on form,
you definitely have Manster, Dinner and Grain and I think
even complained than you. So well as hookers, I think
Grant is the best hooker available to Australia without a doubt.

(18:05):
I think Form here's another question. Do you think Origin
form matters in November. Yeah, it's a tough one because,
for example, we talk about Nathan Cleary and he's been
hammered for Games three and for the series, and obviously
Penrith's terrible start of the season. They've come good. Now
Penrith's go on and win the comp. Nathan Cleary will

(18:27):
be a massive part of that. If he does what
he did in the twenty twenty three Grand Final against
the Broncos and engineers three tries to win it, You're
not you know, how are you gonna leave him out?
And also he won a World Cup in twenty twenty
two with Munster in the halves, so you know that
combination does work. It's it's a difficult one. You're so

(18:49):
hard to You're so hard to holte On. You've taken
it out to New South Wales wins. The male had
a hammer and Xavier Coats on the wing. Mal I
don't think i've listed it. Oh sorry, he had low

(19:11):
Max on the wing with Davit. Yeah. I mean obviously
Ty will play for Samara as he always has. I
think Coats is a master unless he goes back to
P and G. Because he's a freaking lomax. He was
very poor in Game three, so yeah, he's having some

(19:31):
defensive issues. Yeah, I think when he's on last year
in Origin he was phenomenal. But yeah, there will be
some other wingers whill put their hands out. But I
don't don't say Hammer on the wing personally, I see
him either. He's terrible on the wing defensive. Yeah, yeah,
I think I think there are other wingers who come again,

(19:52):
I mean at Okar did the business for Australia in
twenty twenty two. Carraz is a is an option. Who's
you know he's and he's played very well for the Doggies.
So yeah, surely because as he's playing for Bankstown in
the World Cup, in the World Cup Republic, isn't that

(20:13):
it's a I like Bankstown. I love going back on
the food, the coffee fantastic and Mole has got Latrell
and Valve Holmes, malmon Inger has Latrell and the hammer
in the centers. Well, the Troll has been injured for

(20:35):
what you know, he was injured again now basically yeah, yeah,
so that's a big that's a big question. And obviously
Stephen Brighton Samoa I wouldn't rule out Tommy Turbo. He
played for Australian last year Obviouslyaki, Yeah, I mean Roberta.

(20:56):
How good was he? But I mean, is that names
play for tong Well, I think I think, I think
he's got a Pollenesian background. I don't know exactly what
on it is, but yeah, I'm sure it'll be eligible.
But he's a young guy. I mean, he's just well,
I'll just go to I'll just go to the research

(21:16):
lab to find out which. There's also Catainy Stag so
when I was also played for Tonga. There's Brad and Best.
Brad and Best has not had I guess, the greatest season.
But there's there's quite a few options there in the
in the centers's tonguean Yeah, born in New Zealand, so

(21:38):
surely qualifies for Australia. Monster and Daden are the moles
six and seven Malhas Cleary. Now this is interesting because
you know who's the incumbent and Australian half dead in
his Mitchell molds? Is it was? It? Was it not

(22:00):
Moses and died in in the sixty seven In that yeah,
did and was six and Moses was seven. Yeah, I
mean they play. It's not a traditional six and seven.
The play left and right. So yeah, Moses, I mean
I think Moses, if he was fit, he's a fantastic player,
would be in contention. But his injuries this year not

(22:24):
he's not playing footy, has he no? So who you picking?
I think if we're picking today, you pick, you picked
it in a monthster, But I mean i'd still have
I probably have Cleary on the on the bench. If not,
he'd definitely been a squad. I mean, I think he's
the best player in the world when he's when he's firing,
I think the thing was Cleary. I don't turn it

(22:44):
into a technical you know, not what this podcast is about,
my loose carry podcast if want that kind of analysis.
But in appendis shirts part of the system mm hmm,
in an Australian shirt and in a Queensland shirt, sorry,
in his South Wales shirt, he isn't necessarily part of

(23:07):
a system with people plaid with day and day out,
week in week and work with week week in week out.
I've not seen any evidence yet Cleary can flourish outside
of that penste Did you did you not watch the
twenty twenty two woke up? Yes? And he was terrible
until the final against the our team. That was wow, terrible.

(23:32):
Do you remember his kicking? I don't remember his kicking.
Suggest you go back and watch some old tapers, John,
I wouldn't. I wouldn't say he was terrible. I think
that's a bit. I don't think he was great. He
certainly didn't put his mark on the game. And when
you compare, you know, you've got everything we're saying about
everything I'm saying about Clearies in the context and painting

(23:54):
out so you know he's the next Peter Sterling, Joey John's, etcetera.
Right now nowhere near in the New South Wales or
Australian Jersey clubland. Great record, what's more tapes? When he
said props, they've both got pay hass and Tino fat Assay,

(24:17):
so they might lose both of them. So, I mean,
I think we both agree they're probably the best two
front rowers available. So let's say those two go to
Samoa or to play for sam in Western Sydney or
wherever it is, who do we put there? Yeah, that's
that's the real issue with which Barnett obviously out with

(24:38):
an A C L. You're looking at you're looking at
Lindsay Collins, you're looking at Max King. Who else have
we got in contention? But you've got Harrgan might have
to play prop played from I suppose yeah, Patty Carrigan,

(24:59):
I mean the third and will definitely be Isao. Yeah,
that's an option. You're looking at the the guy from
Melbourne who was on the bench and whose name yes Stefano,
yes Stefano, but his name Suggesse might go to one
of the islands. So well. The other one who's obviously

(25:21):
had a great club season is his mate. He's been
ripping up. He's eligible for His brothers have played for
some old Yeah. I think you know, if he if
he got offered selection, I don't think necessarily particularly he
was overlooked for himself, well wasn't he? So yeah. Yeah,

(25:43):
in the second row they both have Angus Crichton. In
the other Sex side of the of the the field,
they've got Ruben Cotter or the Moles. Mal's got you. Yeah,
I have your Ruben Cottery. He's played for Australia for
he's a worker. Obviously, Lay and Martin not being available

(26:06):
is a loss, but yeah, I think I think it
would be quite well. It didn't seem to matter to
the Mold that the Martin's got him on the bench.
On the fourteen, I would probably have on the bench
and start with Hudson for impact and your your okay,
the benches the Mold and I think I think earlier

(26:33):
in I think malt somebody down there and have not
anyway bench was Martin, But we've just said Mold bench
and no good for for the series is a baby Hudson,
young and Colin. Who else would come into contention. I

(26:56):
think someone who's been overlooked and who's obviously played for
Australia for and I think who knew so well has
missed is Jake Travovich. And I know he's a he's
a he's a confident of yours, but he's a gats.
He's a character and he's a team people. I think
that he needs to run the pass it and I

(27:21):
don't in terms of injuries, but cant murray. Is he
going to be back in time? That's a good question.
I'm not sure what where he is. And then I
think you're looking at utilities. Are you're looking at who
can provide some spark off the benches at the Robson.
Is it a Watson? Is it a Ben Hunt? Yeah? Yeah, interesting,

(27:47):
isn't it. I'm coming on tal to England. John, You're
in October. We should close the borders. I don't think.
Don't you reveal whom the kangaroo would coming because I'm
keeping secret for a few weeks to increase the intro.
So I'm doing an ashes to a rugby lea coach
dot com to tay you please have a look if

(28:07):
you're listening to this in England or in Europe, if
you want to come to the hotels in London or
maybe Liverpool, you want a week away from up to
the Everton game, and please get in touch and I
will maybe have some tickets. Let's stop the English stuff.
Jack Wellesby fullback who's coming back onto the field soon
thing for ye says England will with three now? Is

(28:33):
he a medium fastball for Australia as well? Yeah? I
mean you can look at it two ways. And I'd
love to get your take on this league because I
posted on my feed, no no comment anything about it,
just put it out there. This is what Jack was
a straight newspaper, obviously I did. It's not my story.

(28:54):
It was in the sun. Yeah, you would know. When
when is the last time that Great Britain or England
an actually series three nil they ever have? Yeah? Okay,
so you don't think they ever have because I think
the nineteen eighty two tours for such whitewash. It might

(29:15):
have been wrong. They might have been won in nineteen
for now they certainly haven't been through a tour on
defeat it that way. Yeah, So you put that on
one side. You put the fact that Great Britain England
haven't won an actually series at all nineteen seventy, They
haven't won a World Cup since nineteen seventy two, they
haven't beaten Australia in any game since two thousand and six.

(29:39):
The fact that they would win three in a row.
I mean, I'm not a book maker, but what odds
would you have that thirty thirty dollars Australia? Yeah, yeah,
thirty to one. Look on the other side, confidence, you
know why not? You know, you don't want to you
don't want to be defeated before you step on the park,

(30:01):
talk yourself up, believe you can do it. You know,
as the coach whisperer, says Dan Dan Dan don't mention
the opposition name then exactly the demon's Land. Yeah, Kevin
Walters will be all over it. He loves the coach whisper.
So look, yeah, you know you gotta you've gotta talk

(30:22):
it up. Yeah I don't. I don't think England's going
to win three nil. Look, if England wins three nil,
that will be one of the greatest achievements in sporting history,
in any sport. Ever. If if if England wins three nil,
I will do a nudie run very public. I think
you should do a nudy swim through the Thames. Wow,

(30:43):
I want me. I want the tentacles to still be
there when I get to the other side. England will
win a Test. The Specials win the first. I think
everything we've heard from Australia, who's the coach? Still don't
have a coach? If we were called right now, they
don't have coach. No hole tell YadA, YadA, YadA. Now,

(31:04):
on top of that, there's a complacency in this country,
as evidenced by everything that's happened in the last two years,
but also comments some socials. So there's a complacency, and
complacency is a disease and at some point that will
catch up. Now. Historically in the three match series, England

(31:29):
or brick Burn have put on the game of their lives.
In the first game nineteen ninety five, World Cup, two
thousand and one, they won the first Test I think
ninety seven they won second in the Super League series

(31:50):
ninety four, won the first Test, nineteen ninety one first Test.
So this isn't England's first barbecue either or great first.
This is a big thing to English, so I think
the specials to win that first. It will be in
the Football League's interest for this series. The levels of

(32:11):
going into the third game too, in particular, and I
think they were clearly worried about that because the stadium
that houses more people fit into your house. I think
so the they were nervous about the that I don't
and potential in Whitewash, But I think if they had,

(32:33):
if they were picking the stadium now, I think they
make a decision because there's who are Australia guns. There's
going to be players injured as well. For all the
players we've discussed, is going to be some players. I
think this Australia team is there for the taking now.
What concerns me from an English point is the standard

(32:58):
of the Super League competition, the knowledge that the NRL
com have English ear Yeah. Well, thirdly, when we went
through the team, how many English players can you tell
me are better than some of those players? Well, that's
that's the key, that's the key point, isn't it. I
think if you if you put the two seventeen's side

(33:20):
by side, how many of those English players would you
pick over their Australian counterpounds counterparts? I don't think, Well
my opinion. Obviously everyone's got a different opinion, but I
don't think there would be a lot. If you can
you think of any of me. Jack Wellsby is somebody
that would I wouldn't. I wouldn't pick Jack Wellesby over

(33:42):
Tedesco or I mean Dylan Edwards maybe, but I wouldn't
pick him over Latrell or Turbo No. I think. I
think maybe in the forwards, look, you know England's England's
got some some great forwards. But the thing is weep.
We can look at individual players, but is a team game,
isn't it? And it's about working for each other. And

(34:05):
you know the Shan Wayne style is grinding out a win,
working in your guts off tackling, which will suit forwards exactly,
but it also suits English condition conditions in October November,
you know about between about five and eleven degrees cold, wet.
You know, it's not going to be expensive footy. It's

(34:26):
not going to be you know, it's not going to
be fifty two to thirty two, is it? I don't
think now, you know, you look at the last the
last five tests that England have played in this window
against samar and Tonga was usually rain, you know, usually
not the most expensive footy. So yeah, you've you've just
got You've got to get a team that's working together

(34:47):
and that is very united. And I think that's what
Wayne's trying to do too. Okay, History History lessons Historical
nineteen ninety two Great Britain Lions Tour. First of all,
you remember any I do remember some of it? Yes?

(35:09):
I do. They toured Papua New Guinea, Australia and New
Zealand between May and July nineteen ninety two, and it
was the last ever Great Briton Lions tour to this
country in depth. Apart from tri Nations and Phone Nation.
They literally played for the Ashes in Australia and then

(35:31):
the Basketball Shield in New Zealand. Which is which? Which is? Yeah,
it's quite significant, wretch. Let's get some major major bits
out now. This was the first tour that Sky Sports
covered every game live. It was huge because back in

(35:54):
those days, all like TV was a huge thing. So
Eddie and Steve O were the commentators. It was different.
It was different. I mean the nineteen eighty eight tour
we had some Boddie Studio the BBC and Ray French
flying touch line commentator at the Sydney Football Stadium and
we've got Jack Gibson and Darryl Eastlake were the commentators,

(36:18):
so we've got the Australian one whereas we had our
own and Steve Oh and Eddie Hemmings were massively passionate
the touring squad. Guess how many players don't look at it?
Forty thirty two? How many players from Wigan? How many
players from Wigan are I'd say fifteen thirteen. There was

(36:43):
one test and from memory, I think it was the
second test. The whole pack was wiggan too. Some of
the names on their mark aston I mean it was
more famous names, but we've mentioned them a few times
podcast Let's Holiday was on tour. That's not a name

(37:03):
that many people find familiar, Lea, can you tell me
who who Michael Jackson was? And I'm not talking about
the dead American singer All Player, right, Okay? I never
heard of him? Well player from Oh no it does
he awake Till Trinity play for Home? No he didn't.

(37:24):
I think that's the only team that didn't played for.
But yeah, he was a he was a back roller.
I think I'm trying to think of some other names
that people might not know. Well. Remember Billy McGuinty was
at Wigan. He play came on the tour. Lliam Steedman
made that tull They went to Papa New Guinea and

(37:47):
played Highland Zone and one twenty four fifteen played the
Island Zone, so Highland Zone an Island Zone and one
thirty eight twenty two. The Test match against Batan, New
Guinea was twenty fourteen and then they came over to
Australia and the three tests were played at the Sydney

(38:08):
Football Stadium, Prince's Park in Melbourne and lang Park out
Up Stadium. It's been on the second of year. The
Queensland Residents scored ten and Great Britain scored fourteen. Some
of the Queensland residents Neil Rechless Super League legend, Jason Heatherington,

(38:32):
he played at the Broncos in for a little bit
in London, Queensland and Queensland. Yeah, yeah, and plays for
the Broncos. Now that's right. On the sixth of June
they went to Canberra and beat Canberra or twelve and
called the Bruce Stadium playing for that day Brett Mullins
at full back, RICKI seven, Craig Bellamy Locke yes, and

(39:00):
Tim Sheens was the coach of Canberra, coach of Great
Britain on the store Now, don't want to know right.
I think that's the first quick question I've ever got right.
Or the eight it's only going to get worse for you.
The next one was nineteen ninety. The next time we
did ninety four. Last time, so this is yeah. One

(39:23):
day the eighth of June, el Ware Steelers ten, Great
Britain eleven snuck home there some of these names here.
Look look at that Senate Partnership for War and McGregor
and girdl Or are you looking looking at the things Now?
There was no old rod wich Art to keep the bolts,

(39:44):
so maybe they would have beaten them. And then it
was a future leads coaching there in Graham Murray correct
the late Great Graham Murray ear Handley out injured for
the first Test, so Garry Scoldfield was bridg Captain. Australian
stuck with most of those who had won the nineteen

(40:04):
ninety one series against New Zealand, with Michael Hancock in
instead of an injured Really Cahn and Glenn Lazarus was
in for Craig cell Worry Australia want this game twenty
two six, but that's a really good game. But if
you go back and watch them, fantastic games. What was
big in this game was worried about Martin Hear and

(40:26):
he made two breakaways and Andrew Hettinghouse knocked him into
touch twice and one of them was literally his appendage
on the line, kind of size, just a little bit
whine And that was that Man of the Mats that
day was Bradley Clyde. You're looking at the answers, How

(40:48):
can of quiz you? If you're looking at the answers,
I can tell by your eyes you're looking at the answers. Oh,
Michael Jackson was on the bench that day too. I'm
just looking at this Australian side. Almoninger captain Laurie Daly
is the other center. I think you look at that

(41:10):
Australian side. The word is stacked. Yes, Radley Clyde Locke,
what Billspie on the bench? Yeah, Kevin Walters on the
bench being fantastic. Brad Fitler on the bench, yeah, coach
New South Wales Country were defeated twenty four to six.

(41:35):
Alex Corvo would look for New South Wales Country. People
in Tolford don't know who he is. Steve Leanane, people
in Rochdale will know what he is. He's on the bench.
The first club side to beat Great Britain on the tour.
Who was it? Paramouna, I don't know. I'm not looking

(41:59):
at it, param Para matter Eels. You did look at it.
That was on Friday, the night of June twenty two sixteen.
Paramatta playing for Cap Paramatta that day. Brett Kenny was
at six, Michael Butner at center. The other names I
just do not recognize recognized it. Proney was the coach

(42:21):
in that game. They also had a race to see
what the fastest man in rugby league was and it
was won by the Paramatta fell at Lee, Odin Ryan,
Oden Ryan. I remember it's been a yeah, it's been
a well well reversed well reran on TV and YouTube

(42:43):
and Denny Elias started some rumors apparently because I was
the odd one favourite a few of the British players
back the Eels. Feller to win a fire tank so
it could go in would not surprise me in the
rightst Passle Knights were dismissed in the Hunter of twenty

(43:03):
two nil. Some interesting names in the night side Robbie
Old Davis. When I think when I think of Robbie
Old Davis, I would think of ray horror. Look that's
a it's a pretty handy Knights team. Johnny Schuster, Michael
Hagen who obviously went on Heights as coach, Matthew Rodwell
whose whose father used to work at a school with

(43:25):
my mother, a big mark Sergeant Sammy Stewart who I
played touch footy with in the two well it was
forty odd then and he's with his son and they
were both bloody handy players. Mark Glanville, Leeds Leagues player Leeds. Yes,
Robbie McCormack another one. Yeah, coach England coach Catlin's coach.

(43:52):
You would have been probably at this game, wouldn't you.
I can't remember it, but it was played down the
road from where I grew up and I would have
been eleven ten eleven at that starts. Yeah. Well. The
second test was the all Wigan forward pat and Written
flogged early thirty three ten on the Friday, the twenty

(44:15):
sixth of June. Tries from Phil Clark, Paul new Love,
Gary Scholfield, Rahm Tedmond and Martin Uffia. Paulice kicked six
from seven goals and a drop goal or a field
goal from Gary Scholfield. Really hit back with one goal
from Malcolm Maninga and tries to bobbl In Christ John's
thirty one thousand watched it in Melbourne. Player of the Match,

(44:39):
Gary Scholfield. Any memories of that game? I don't have
memories of the game, but I have seen the highlights
and probably whenever I see Scowy he he reminds me
he did the famous chip and chip over the top
and scored. There was also probably the worst forward pass
from the Ponds that didn't get called it seen, but

(45:00):
that was I think it's a pretty memorable gang because
absolutely routed the kangaroos and that doesn't happen very often.
Thirty three to ten, I mean even in the modern era.
But thirty three to ten back then was was hiding
and as the conditions the second test player on cold
and went night at Melbourne's Princess Park, so I would
have suited the British down to the ground. It was great.

(45:24):
It was great at the time. I've got to be
honest looking at it in the cold light days I
did a few weeks ago, and helpful think referee gave
him a few things as well. I mean, no, that
would never happen. Says there's any interesting names we're not
mentioned back I said a whole Wigham Park for the record,

(45:46):
Melvin Skaret and I was Martin them at the hooker.
I could tell you from Martin, I'll tell you what
and hopefully it doesn't Apparently he used to say he
skided up and he's done this Saturday morning. You know
the old days when you train Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday morning
and his kids up in his unders over somebody on

(46:08):
Saturday morning in the changing apparently is the biggest bet ever,
like the absolute second roles, Dennis Betts, Bill McGinn, Tip
Till Clark on the bench, so Joe Lyden's on the
bench and other wiganer Gary Connolly may have been at
Wigan by then, if not play, I think he was. Yeah,

(46:29):
Martin the Fire was at Wigan. He started John Edwards,
so yeah, it's a massive, massive Wigan contingent in that game.
And of course during this time Wigan and Brisbane were
trading World Cup challenges. Yeah, Wigan with the World Chapters
in eighty seven against Man. They then I can't remember

(46:51):
what happened after a few years, know that Brisbane Broncos
came over and played them in ninety two with shaved
heads after they won the pump in ninety two and
beat them in Wigan. And then in ninety four, a
couple of years later Wigan went to Brisbane and won
the title back. This Wigan tide was special. They then

(47:11):
went to rugby league hotbed of the Seagulls Tuesday thirtieth,
the Seagulls Stadium in Tweet's head, tweetheads, because that still exists.
I'm not sure. I think well, I think it's the
Tweed head Seagulls, isn't it. But I mean and it's
great gold Coast played in New South Wales because Tweed
Heeads is on the on the side, well it says

(47:34):
he a seagulls. Stadium was a rugby league stadium as
on Wikipedia. So all you need to know the gold
coat side Madrian Vowels and the centers called Terry Cook,
I'm sure, Scott Sadler on the bench, Jamie Goddard on
the bench, Kevin Campion. Yeah, there's three Queensland origin future

(47:58):
players and Kevin Way for Ireland too. There's another name,
Wayne Bartram. What the future, Oh, Georgie. It was a
great player. Willie Lewis was the coach on the sideline anyway,
he was not a great coach. The third and final

(48:19):
Test was allocated points for the World Cup and this
probably helped secure Britain's place in the World Cup in
two points differentially thing particularly when they went to New
Zealand and one because played a bit mater than the
nineteen ninety two World Cup. Finally, Embley, which was a
great game. We shall cover That third Test was at

(48:40):
lang Park in Brisbane, Australia won sixteen ten try from
Lorrie Daly and Malmaninger Malkin goold Icen straight to Pope
or Leedswood got three goals for Great Britain. Wild Martin
a fire scored the solitary try. Looking at this team,
Brad Fitland made his way into the does, Willie Calm

(49:01):
was back on the wing, John cart right on the bench.
Hun I'd no major change really, I think they were
quite with what They have a mother Wigan pack again
two so they tried that be again. But just or

(49:25):
don't want who got Player of the Series and what
was a medal call? I believe I'm going to take
a guess it was Bradley Clyde and the medal is
because I think it was the Super League Made of
the Match till recently it was the Harry Sanderlin Medal, correct,

(49:48):
but it is it is good that we have changed
that because he was a noted racist, so we're probably right. Okay,
you know, people who listened to regularly will realize that
it's his equivalent match fix. You've got one question right
in all previous seven episodes, and now all of a

(50:08):
sudden you get every question the Laura of Averages. Who
who televised a series in Australia or in the UK.
I don't it was Skuy, I don't. I don't actually know.
I'm going to guess Channel seven correct. Yeah, that is

(50:29):
an actual guest because it was only because you said
Darryl least Lake, which work for nine. Channel nine didn't
have a stranglehold on the rugby lad right now. Commentary
from Graham Hughes, Pat Welsh and Willie Lewis after the
first time the entire store was televised back into Britain
from Sky Sports like I said, and Jonathan Davis did

(50:52):
a lot iadline reporting too. The heartbreaking series lost for Yeah,
well it was tempered by us beating New Zealand in
the series I think, or a drawing it used to
getting into the World Cup. Britain beat Auckland fourteen to eight.

(51:15):
When they got to New Zealand, it was a whole
days after playing the Test, the first Test on the twelfth,
so the five days fly over to New Zealand after
a test man five days gown play to be fair,
England would do that now because there's still no closing

(51:37):
and so New Zealand beat Great Britain fifteen four in
the first Test in Palmerston, North Britain then went on
to beat Canterbridge. So they're still playing clubs and regions
here as well, seventeen to six. And then in the
second Test in Auckland. This is when to do their

(52:02):
place in the World Cup and will buy a beach
in New Zealand nineteen sixteen, and then they were allowed
to go home. And now there are opa wins in
about three games. Well there we go. That's a trip
down memory lane. No other audiod o. We have lots
to get in actaid. I think in two weeks time
people will hear from no kleil Oh depend on how

(52:26):
long that interview go. For all, they may or may
not hear from you don't otherwise it could be a
very long one. But all people now on the news
won't what's going on? We will? I know you're going
to ask Crusher about his infamous toastacking incident on the
Footy Show in the nineteen nineties. I don't know anything
about that. Oh, check out YouTube. It's I can remember.

(52:50):
It's it's to my memory watching it as a as
a teenager. Hard thing. Yes, it's on YouTube. Well it
probably is. I mean to the Fuddy Shows highlights. It's
not often you say an old bearded man getting his
getting whip Craam licked off his toes on so he
got his Yes, okay, hmm, well I'll have to ask him.

(53:15):
What a great way to end this ASHES podcast. They
don't make them like that anymore. Where can they get
you again? They can get me on exit Johnny D. Davidson.
They can get me on Patreon at Rugby League Club,
Rugby League, that place yeare dot com and I'm and
I'm Rugby league coach bombay you what rugby league coaching totals?

(53:39):
But bye from minutes, goodbye from him. Take care, let
me and the recording. That would be a good idea,
wasn't it
