(00:06):
Wiva Madison in the morning and Askathe experts. Joining us this morning is
our computer expert from troll Bytes, mister John Rivers. John. Today is
a day for telecommuting, isn't it? Oh Man, what a difference from
a day or this is crazy? It is bonkers and it's uh. It's
important as we talk about talking aboutgetting out there. If you are on

(00:27):
the roadway, stay, do besuper super careful. We've had a lot
of accidents on the day. It'sjust one of those mornings. Best if
you can, if you can juststay home, stay. We're not getting
are out in the position to giveyou a pass. But wink wink,
nudge nudge. Sixteen year old wouldagree with you wholeheartedly. But too bad,
you got to go to school.I gotta get in. I was.
I was talking talking about telecommuting. And one of the really cool things

(00:51):
that we're able to do now isum talk with people, whether it's with
Zoom and Skype and all these technologies, we can talk with them over great
disc and says and oftentimes the soundquality has been great, and some radio
shows are even being done this way. And I snuck into a studio earlier
this morning where they had a coupleof a couple of folks that were out
in different parts of the different partsof the state. They were doing a

(01:15):
radio show together and they were ina commercial break and one of them was
saying, just real casually, justcomplete coincidence when I walked in took my
computer into troll bytes last week, and he said, they told me it
was on its last legs, butthey were able to clean it up to
keep me keep it running for alittle bit longer. And I thought,
what just a strange coincidence, Andliterally as the conversation was going, I

(01:41):
said, I had to talk tothe troll Bytes guys later today. First
off, that's a really cool thingthat you guys are able to do,
is even with some of these oldercomputers, if there's even a little bit
of life left in them, youguys are able at troll Bytes to really
maximize the lifespan of that computer byfine tuning it and really working on some
of the perform and stuff to keepit to keep it working even if it's

(02:02):
just you know, again near theend of life, but still get a
couple more years out of them.Yeah, we do that quite a bit.
And in in that situation. Wealways like to ask the question.
It's like, you know, it'san older computer, what do you use
this for? And how big ofa deal is it for you if the
thing you know suddenly decides to stopworking. So we kind of base,

(02:24):
you know, what we do onthat. And if the customer says,
you know, I just need toget like six more months out of this,
I'm planning on replacing it, thenyou know we can we can spend
some time on it and make sureit's at least as functional as prop possible.
Or if it's a very limited usecomputer, you know, I turn
it on every other day, Icheck, I check a few emails,

(02:44):
and the rest of it I don'tcare about. So it just kind of
depends, you know, based oncustomers answer what we would like to do
with the device, and at leastthat kind of gives us some footing as
far as to what the customer expectsand what they want to use the computer
for and how to proceed accordingly atthat point. Is there something too?

(03:05):
It's interesting when you mentioned, um, you know, talking with the owner
about kind of what they plan ondoing. That's that is a unfortunately,
but it is a unique approach thesedays is actually listening to listening to customers
and say, hey, what areyou going to do with this stuff?
I think for a lot of people, their expectation is although just automatically tell
me yea or nay, but actuallyasking about And obviously there's some cases where

(03:28):
the computer is just so old,Y're so gone that it's that it's a
reality that is simply time to moveon. But having that conversation and even
being able to wait six months ora year before replacing that can make a
huge difference for that for that ownerand actually taking the time to listen to
that computer owner. Um is areally good benefit of working with you guys
at troll Bytes. Yeah. Imean I understand that people are coming into

(03:53):
to the store or calling us andyou know, expecting a service. But
before we spend somebody's money, wewant to make sure everyone ones on the
same page and make sure that theirexpectations would be met. And sometimes sometimes
we can't meet the expectations, andthen it's like, well, I don't
think I would spend any money onthis computer. I would just be honest

(04:14):
with you and just say, youknow, and if we don't have the
computer in the store that you're lookingfor and you need something, then you
know we're We've been more than happyto pull up a big box Marks website
and look at the specs of acomputer and say this one would work very
well for you. Unfortunately we don'thave it. We could order it or
you can just go pick it up. So we're like, like we just

(04:36):
talked about, you know, we'remore than willing to meet the customers needs,
whether it's with us or at leastpointing them in the direction that's going
to serve their purposes. And comingup this morning at eight thirty, we'll
talk about kind of that expuser experience, that customer experience. I get a
lot of feedback from folks that geta chance to stop on and say hi
to John, say hi to Samand the team Metrobyites. We'll talk about

(04:58):
that and take your calls a littlebit later this this morning. John,
until then you get some coffee andI'll do the same and we'll have some
fun coming up at eight thirty. My friend sounds good. In the meantime,
our friend Lisa breaks from from theBruce Company, comes your way next
right here on thirteen ten w IBAthirteen ten Wiba Madison in the morning and

(05:28):
ask the experts. I know thatsong means are gonna be joined by troll
bytes, and that means got Johnwith us. John, how you doing?
I am well? How are you? I'm doing great? And that
also means when we hear that tune, Sam is with us, Sam,
how you been my friend? ButI've been doing good. It's been a
bit of a crazy month and ahalf so far, but I'm I'm still

(05:49):
doing good. Hey, Dan's makingyou work too hard. You need you
need a little great damp, bothof you along. John and Sam of
course, come to us from trollbytes website troll bytes dot com. That's
troll bytes dot com. Their telephonenumber six O eight four three seven fifty
five ninety that's four and three sevenfive five nine zero. Even better,

(06:10):
stop on in say hello. They'dlove to see you right at eight ninety
five Springdale Street in beautiful Mount Horband the phone lines are open for you
all. So if you got aquestion for Sam and John love to get
you on the air. Six Oeight three two one thirteen ten. That's
three two one thirteen ten. Weget you on the air with our computer
experts from troll Bites. We startedour conversation earlier this morning. We were
talking about an experience that somebody inthe building had stopped in to see you

(06:35):
guys at troll Bytes and really howyou guys were able to help them keep
their computer running a little bit longerand also allow them a little bit of
time to make a selection on anew computer. And Sam, you see
this day in and day out.People bring you their desktops, they bring
you their laptops, they bring youtheir PC and say, Sam, I
don't know what's going on. It'srunning slow. My man, can you

(06:55):
help me? And you get tohelp people on a daily basis, don't
you. I certainly do. Um, that's really the most common thing that
I see when someone brings your computerinto the shop. Whereas it's not responding,
it's running slow. It's it's sloweddown quite a bit, and you
know, customers don't sure what's goingon running When a computer is running slow,

(07:16):
that can be That can be causedby a multitude of factors. It
could be a hardware like for example, it could be that the hard drive
in your computer is starting to giveout, or it could be that it's
starting to get it's gutten too fulland it can't process everything is fast.
Or it could just simply be ayou know, to borrow a phrase from
you. The computer could be gettingtoo long in the tooth and it just

(07:40):
can't keep up. Or it couldbe software related. It could be that
Windows is at a date and it'strying to chew through a bunch of updates
in the background, eating up yourprocessing power. Or it could be that
you have something lurking in the backgroundthat could be causing it to slowdown.
So there are a lot of reasonswhy your computer can run slow, and

(08:01):
it's I would be more than happyto take a look at your computer if
you want to bring it in andI'll figure out what's going on and we'll
tell you how much it will cost. Effect one of the great things to
SAM and getting your computer in andyou know, having that diagnosis and finding
out what kind of where the statusis. If you can get a little
extra time, it also gives youtime. I know, you have a
great assortment of recertified computers at theshop and if you get an extra six

(08:26):
months or an extra year, theycan work with you as well to keep
an eye out for a particular type, particular model, UM and kind of
work with them to try and getthat. When they do decide now is
the time to upgrade, now's thetime to get a replacement, you can
work with them to make sure thatthat the machine that they that they get
is absolutely perfect for their needs.Of course, UM, the computers that
we have here for sale, UM, they are rested, they are recertified

(08:48):
machines, so they do have acouple of years on them, so they're
not necessarily brand new. However,UM, we don't sell computers that you
know, look like they've been ora war zone or like ran over on
a construction on a construction site.UM. The computers that we sell have
our use for office environment. Sobasically, these are machines that are designed

(09:09):
for UM processing data, doing serverwork, UM, spending and receiving emails,
doing document work basically like UM everylike day to day busy work,
that sort of thing. And what'snice about these machines is that with the
hardware that they have in them, they expel at doing that sort of work.
So if you just need like aneveryday machine to like, you know,

(09:31):
just do basic day to day work, these machines will run great.
Um, if you need something witha little more juice and power behind it,
you know, for like accounting,or for like maybe some programming,
or you know, just processing otherthings, these machines are good for that
as well. Talking this morning withour computer experts from soul by troll Bytes,
Sam and John. Of course theycome to us from troll bytes online,

(09:52):
troll bytes dot com that stroll byteesdot com or tell number six or
eight four three seven fifty five ninetythat's four three seven five five nine zero
best thing to do. Stop onin. They'd love to see you right
at eight ninety five Springdale Street inBeautiful Mound. Horrible and John, I
know you and Sam worked together whenit comes to purchasing those computers. And

(10:15):
Sam had mentioned these haven't been nowyou know, they're not on the job
site. You're not driving over them. The funny thing about these computers though,
is if you buy one like thisis not a guarantee here. But
the reality is when it comes todurability, these are if you're going to
drive over a computer, these arethe type you guys, you who you
want, the ones you guys carryare These are solid machines aren't they that

(10:37):
They are very good quality computers, and typically the ones that get driven over,
those are the ones we don't sell. Those are the ones we replace.
Yeah, but that's the understatement ofthe year. But yeah, we
do sell very good quality laptops. As Sam had mentioned, they come off
of corporate lease, so they're alreadya business class computer. And the difference

(10:58):
between business class and consumer class isquite draft art very very stunning sometimes and
just to look in the field ofthe computer and how it's built and the
material that is used to build it. So if you buy something at you
know, big Boxmartum, sometimes youget some really good quality computers there.

(11:18):
Sometimes on the lower end of thethe cost scale, you're going to get
something that feels cheap and probably won'tlast very long. So it really does
matter when you make a little bitof an extra investment in a computer.
It is going to run better,it is going to perform better, it
is going to have some extra longevitybuilt into it, just because a business

(11:43):
is not going to stand for computersthat are failing every couple of years or
you know, six months into thecomputer. If if stuff like that is
happening. So so these larger companieslike DAL and HP and Lenovo know that
they have to have a good buildquality when they're selling thousands of computers to
some of these larger businesses, becauseit's very easy for the purchaser to look

(12:07):
at this and go, yeah, these aren't lasting as long. So Lenovo,
we're not buying from you anymore.And you know that's that's that's kind
of a big deal when you're sellinglaptops and the thousands and thousands at a
time, so good build quality. We make sure they're all working well.
The supplier that we use actually testthem very extensively too, before we even
get them, and then we setthem up brand new, and uh,

(12:31):
you know, at that point wehave a great computer to offer to our
customers. And I want to Sam, I want to talk to you about
as as your dad points out,you set those up brand new. I
mean, when when you get thosecomputers and when somebody comes in to take
a look at them and buy them, attrol Bytes, m you've really done
a lot of work on the softwareside to make sure that that computer is
going to run phenomenally and have justwhat the what the customer needs. Did

(12:58):
we lose, Sam, But Sam, Oh we have have some phone I
think we have. I hear,Oh what's that? I wonder if you
had to step away for a customer, Well, then I'll ask you John
about that is. I know youguys set up the software for for for
really use for everybody, don't you. Absolutely. Um, we set the

(13:20):
computers up. Um, when weset them on the showroom floor, they're
all set up the same and thenum, you know they have Windows,
everything is up to date, theirsecurity software on it. And then we
put on just a very basic amountof extra software, just some very very
common productivity software and then nothing else. We don't load them down with all

(13:41):
of these apps that are going tobe popping up and asking you a bunch
of questions and stuff like that.So what we call them is grab and
go. So you can literally walkin the store, grab a computer.
Um, hopefully you pay for itbefore you leave, but Sam's a fest
runner, so yeah, but youcan literally take it home, turn it

(14:01):
on and it is ready to go. You can start using it as soon
as you get home or back toyour office or wherever you need to be.
So um, there's there's very littlesetup for you to do. And
if if you do need specialized software, or if you had an old device
that you're bringing in and you needyour data move from one to the other.
We can handle that. Two Usuallytakes a day or so for us

(14:22):
to just get it on the workbenchand get things scheduled and make sure everything
is set up that the way youwant it. And then at that point
you've got a new computer with allyour important information on it, and again
it's ready to go and ready touse. And John you mentioned, you
know, bring it home or bringit back to the office. You obviously
work a lot with businesses with managedservices. Do you get a lot of

(14:43):
businesses that come on and say, maybe they've got like three or five employees,
just they say, we want laptops. We want to get all our
employees lap tops, whether it's towork in the office, work from home,
be a little more mobile. Doyou get a request to acquire,
you know, maybe the same typeof machine for the staff, and of
course roll those out as well. Some do. Some prefer to buy their

(15:03):
own, and then we just kindof look at the specs and then look
at you know, as this amodel that's going to be in production for
a little bit yet. So ifyou want to buy another one or two
in six months, you're going toget the same one for consistency's sake.
But yeah, I mean, wecan certainly work with any of our customers.
Some of them just call and sayI need a computer, and then

(15:26):
we bring it on site and hookit up and get everything set up.
And like I said, some ofthem order their own and then they drop
ship them to our store and weset them up and then bring them back
when they're ready to go, orsome of them, some of them just
do the initial unboxing and get iton the network and then we remote into
it and do the set up thatway, so it's truly is whatever the

(15:48):
customer needs at that point. Thatis absolutely amazing what you guys are able
to do at troll bytes. Talkingthis morning with John and Sam, our
father and son duo are computer expertsfrom troll bytes Online, troll bytes dot

And that's really your passion is workingwith people working with their computers and getting
their their computer up and up andrunning, and day in and day out.
You're really working with folks when itcomes to bring a computer. And
I know sometimes people have to say, like, it is it really?

(17:41):
You know, is it really? There's a benefit to having it on site.
Um, just bring in and sometimesjust having it take a look at
it. You can oftentimes diagnose thingsright there on the bench, right at
the front desk of of troll Bytes, and people can be on their way,
can't they, Well, they certainlycan. Um I'd have to say
it happened. I would say ithappens probably four times out of ten that

(18:03):
I'm able to properly diagnose a problemwith a computer right at the front desk.
Information here at roll Lights is free. So if you have a question
about your computer, or like ifyou've got some sort of weird pop up

(18:23):
pressing buttons and clicking the mouse. It's not doing what it's supposed to do.
You can just bring it here andask me what's going on, and
I'll be happy to just take aquick look. I mean, especially if
it's a laptop. Um oh yeah. Also speaking of helping customers, um
I wanted to to let everyone know. That's if you lost and if a

(18:44):
customer lost an AirPod outside of mystore early last week, I have it.
A customer found it for me,so but and no one has come

(20:38):
what's that first conversation like the typicallypeople calling in or stopping it or
both, and what generally kind ofengages people to say, you know what,
we need to bring troll Bytes onboard. It actually is both.
Sometimes it'll be, you know, someone will stop in from the company and
