El primer vuelo del Halifax tuvo lugar el 24 de septiembre de 1939, pocas semanas después de que el Reino Unido le declarase la guerra a Alemania.
El modelo más producido fue el B Mk III que contaba con cuatro motores Bristol Hércules en lugar de los Merlin. Este avión pesaba casi 30 toneladas al despegar. Siete toneladas de ese peso eran bombas de 250 a 1800 kilos. Lograba alcanzar una velocidad de 455kh y tenía un rango de acción de 3000km, con un techo máximo de 7300 metros.
Los Halifax participaron en más de 82 mil misiones durante toda la guerra y soltaron unas 224 mil toneladas de explosivos. La gran mayoría de las incursiones se dieron en Alemania en el marco de la estrategia aérea de desgaste practicada por ingleses y americanos.
