B Side Breakdown.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
Hey everyone, welcome to the B Side Breakdown. My name
is Brett Johnson and I'm your host. This is episode
thirty three of a podcast where I talk with other artists,
musicians and songwriters about a song they've written that is
meaningful to them that they want to chat about and
hopefully we can get deep into the y behind it. First, though,
they need to give me permission to play the song
in its entirety for you, the listener, so you can
hear it in advance of our discussion, so you have
(00:29):
some idea of what we're talking about.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Today.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
I'm going to be talking with Seth Robinson from the
band Nowhere Fast about their song Buffalo, So let's get

All right, and that was the song Buffalo by the
band Nowhere Fast. We're gonna take a quick break and
come back and talk with Seth Robinson about the song.
So stay with us, all right, and we're back. Let's
bring in Seth to talk about the song Buffalo, the
band Nowhere Fast and everything else that they're up to. Seth,
thank you so much for taking some time today to
talk with me about the song.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Hey, no problem, no problem at all. Thank you for
having us.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
Absolutely. One of my favorite parts about doing this podcast
is is that I don't necessarily know all the artists
that I'm going to be listening to and talking with,
so it's super fun for me to hear your song
the one that you want to talk about for the
first time, just like I did with Buffalo and knowing
(06:28):
that the listeners are going to kind of have that
similar experience as a lot of them may or may
not have heard it, And I just got to say
it's I really love it.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
It's it hit me in.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
Such a cool way. There's so much texture and so
much depth going on in it, and I love the
production of it. Maybe start sort of furiously looking you
guys up to find out where are these guys from
and where what are they doing? And I know Louisville,
Kentucky and some other things. But I'll just kind of
leave it up to you to tell me about the
song Buffalo specifically, Why did you? Why did No Where
(07:01):
Fast want to talk about that today?
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Or you specifically?
Speaker 5 (07:06):
I would say that's more like, we do love this song.
It's one of our favorites to play live. It's off
our new record, Modern Archaic. But Peter mutual friend, he is,
he's the one that wanted this song. Thought he texted
me about this song. We checked out the record and
a few people did that with this song. So and
(07:29):
the funny thing is it's one of those songs that
I was just messing with textures and a couple of
chords in the studio one night, like just kind of
like a warm up thing, and we wrote it fairly quickly.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
I mean, when to write it in like five minutes,
it's not one of those things.
Speaker 5 (07:50):
But I don't I'm probably about a week we were
we were already like the structure was there and just
kind of of those songs. Feel like it just feeled
itself out, if that makes any sense. It took the grill,
it took the wheel, and we were just like, okay,
and that's what.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
No, that's that's cool. So yeah, I really like it.
And I see this in the line, it seems today
that people's dreams are dying from the rust in our
daily feast. Tell me about that?
Speaker 5 (08:24):
What is what is that?
Speaker 3 (08:26):
What's your interpretation of that? What does that mean?
Speaker 2 (08:30):
That's definitely from too much news and the pandemic.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
And I've learned to give myself a little break from
you know, making sure I'm getting the news I need
to get and all that. But we are seriously, I think,
between media and any kind of media, not just news, but.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
We're just fed a lot of crap.
Speaker 5 (09:00):
Yeah these days, and I think a lot of people
hang on too said stuff that.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
It just doesn't mean anything.
Speaker 5 (09:11):
Half the time, it's like, you know, you might be
worried about the serious topic, but you're worried about a
minute issue inside the serious topic instead of like figuring
out how to fix the.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Whole thing as a whole.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
Or you're worried about the most smallest thing in your
daily life that you should should never be a worry.
And I'm not saying that that's not me, Like we
all get caught up in that sometimes and it just
a lot of time to think and walk while the
world was shut down.
Speaker 6 (09:45):
Yeah, right, got it.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
No, I hear that.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
I hear that completely. That can very much resonates with
me in my current experience with right consuming news and things,
and it's just it's it's challenging, and I get overloaded
really quickly.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
Right right with the why why buffalo? Why is it
called buffalo?
Speaker 1 (10:09):
Is there?
Speaker 5 (10:10):
Because I feel like a for want buffalo is one
of my favorite animals, and but they're outside of their
beauty to me. They've been nearly almost extinct and we've
kind of brought them back, and they're just a species
(10:31):
that seems to keep kind of pushing on.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
And it was kind of a turn on the human.
Speaker 5 (10:39):
Species weighed ourselves through not just the Earth's changes, but
the things we cause to it and the things that
human beings can't seem to get without getting too political
or too hippie. It's just like there's there's things that
humans could do to better our situations, and we just
(10:59):
we don't, right, And I feel like, you know, it's
on Buffalo. It's like it's like, yeah, we're we're a
lot of similarities there, you know.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
Yeah, Nope, that makes perfect sense too, And I like
the context of that a lot in that comparison.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
So where is.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
So, y'all?
Speaker 6 (11:24):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (11:24):
The band is from Louisville, Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
Correct, m Okay we are?
Speaker 3 (11:28):
And how long have you all been a band?
Speaker 1 (11:31):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (11:32):
Nowhere with its lineup changes has been a band for
oh man, uh, sixteen years? Got it?
Speaker 2 (11:42):
Seventeen years?
Speaker 5 (11:42):
Something like that, like a real band. I'd say, like
we put like our first like proper release in those
six Sure. Obviously we've all had side bands. And the
current lineup's been together for about almost five years.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
Okay. Keyboard player and I have been together since the
last album, so got it?
Speaker 3 (12:05):
And how many Okay? So the this current lineup has
put out one record together, but you and the keyboard
put out the previous record as well.
Speaker 5 (12:15):
Yes, okay, yes, with a different rhythm section. But yes,
this line up we put out an LP and we've
put out some covers and a B side, and you know,
we're we're just this line up kind of keeps We're
just we just keep trucking. Honestly, we like riding together,
we like playing together.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely, So where then did you when you
say you go to the studio, which studio is that?
Is that your studio in a practice space or some
other building that you guys manage and own and run
or is it What are you referring to when you're
talking about that, And do you just mean like your
rehearsal spot or do you also record there?
Speaker 2 (12:53):
We mean both.
Speaker 5 (12:55):
So our rehearsal spot is our is a studio for
us that we do demo and kind of do all
the grunt work I guess for songs, and then we
will go to actual studios.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
I don't I don't think I would survive.
Speaker 5 (13:11):
We'll put out our own stuff, like you know, some
of the covers we did ourselves, and then just set
off to a buddy to mix a master.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
But I don't think.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
Me nor the guys would survive trying to put out
our own l LP. I think it was just Chinese
democracy right come out sounded like a really bad Queen
record or something. But we just we we We did
(13:39):
record at home in Louisville with this time around, with
Dave Chale over at Dead Bird Studios pretty much just
one of the best in the city to record with.
And Chill likes to push, you know, if he takes
a project on and he's invested in it, like he's
(14:00):
he definitely pushed us, you know. Some He saw that
there was a few different moods, like with each of
our styles, Like I bring in the body of songs,
but everybody's got there, they're they're like icing on it,
you know, and which I think is the best way
(14:20):
to make a record, honestly. But y'all sees that, and
he can kind of break that down for us this
time around, and it really gave us a record that
we are proud of for sure. But it has a
lot of a lot of textures, a lot of textures
on this one. It's not a it's not a straightforward
power pop record. It's not a straight punk rock record either.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
Sure, no, that's great. And this record Modern Archaic came out.
When did it come out in November?
Speaker 4 (14:50):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Just this snow Member awesome, awesome to release. But yeah,
we were just we were just read this.
Speaker 5 (15:00):
This is the record that broke our brain, like you know,
like just you know, we hung on some things too
long and we did do shows and touring in between it,
but like we just yeah, every band has a record
or every you know, we all get a record that
we hang on to. Like it's like this is your lesson.
(15:21):
You know, you want to learn this, You're going to
do it right before we say, before this this is
the song I talk is that the songs have like
their own voice, Like sure, before you put us out,
you're going to make sure it's done right.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
Yep, you know, like okay, that's fine. Cool, It's a
good learning process for sure.
Speaker 6 (15:41):
Got it. So then what.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
With this coming out this past November? Where do you
all tour? How often do you tour? Where do you
play or have you have you done touring to support
this record yet or is there something in the works
or what's happening there?
Speaker 5 (15:57):
No, we haven't done a lot of time to support this. Yeah,
because it just came out in November. Now, we did
have a lot of these songs out on the road
with us the last few years, like half the sets
been new songs, if not more just. I'm a firm
believer of just. I think once you take the songs
out on the road is where they really start to
(16:19):
get their feels, you know, or especially for the ones
that are going to stick around, some that might go
on the shelf for a little break and you bring
down when you're like.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
Oh, we haven't played that in a while, let's do
this one, you know. So yes, But we do have
plans to tour.
Speaker 5 (16:37):
I'm booking some shows and we just did get announced
at Midwest Friends Fest in May. There's some other festivals
and you know, we're about to announce like some Nashville, Chicago, Andy,
Saint louis working on Philly in the Northeast right now.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
So we're going to be releasing a lot of dates.
That's great, that's great. You know what we can for
a band our size.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
Oh, for sure, for sure, do you make it down
to Atlanta or Florida.
Speaker 5 (17:08):
We're yes, we're hoping to make it down to Florida
this year for sure. For a certain fun time hopefully
got it. Yeah, and then which you know is the
best time of year. And yeah, we do try to
make it down to Atlanta, like I've been. I'm working
on Atlanta right now. I got some contacts and stuff
(17:32):
from some mutual people that we kind of know, but
we know they know the way around Atlanta and we
always have a good time in Atlanta, but we we
haven't been able to get down there in the last
like a couple of years. That or Birmingham. Really we
were in Birmingham two years ago, I think, and then
(17:55):
we haven't been southeast like since then. We were working
on regional and Northeast and trying to figure out how
to get feasibly get out west.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
Sure haven't been out there in a while.
Speaker 5 (18:09):
Yep, but you know, getting out there like we have
to even if it's five shows, like four of those
five shows have to work exactly.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
No, I hear it.
Speaker 3 (18:20):
That's a stretching a challenge for sure.
Speaker 6 (18:23):
Cool.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Well, is there any more about the song or the
recording process or how it came together or anything that
you want to touch on with Buffalo specifically?
Speaker 5 (18:35):
No, I mean, like writing that song, I can just
say I did go a little effects, heavy on certain
things and just kind of layering palettes.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
And I'm old school, like I don't have like all
the MIDI stuff.
Speaker 5 (18:50):
And I'm not saying I'm not ever going to go
that way, sure, but it's just like, you know, sitting
in the studio like like nowhere's home headquarters or where
we're recording, and just my slew of pedals, Robs slew
of pedals, Dave's pedals, just you know, really just making
(19:10):
palettes and you know, but still making sure that it
can be played live. You know, I can like being
the We do have a second guitar player every now
and then, but it's mainly, uh ninety percent of the
time it's me just having a man both parts, and
I gotta make sure I can pull it off yes
(19:32):
while singing and right, which is fine. I mean that's
part of the that's part of the fun.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
But we did we just uh you know it. The
reverse delay in that song with the tape delay is what.
Speaker 5 (19:49):
Just really got not not the reverse delay, I'm sorry,
diming in the tape delay.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
I got it from a not a striman.
Speaker 5 (19:57):
But like the Dark Side Kiley Dark Side of the
Moon pedal, they made tape he had on it, Like
there's a certain setting on it that it just has
this cool cannon that it's it's almost like you're playing
an old Atari game or something, and that's that swell
that you hear, and it just I wrapped it around
(20:19):
a digital swell and a bunch of reverb and it
just came out cool. And we just we kind of
built the whole song around that, you know, you know
I got and that's just the verse and the chorus.
The chorus was just it was just a riff I
had had for about a month and just never knew
what really to do with it, you know, just kind
(20:40):
of kept new with it. And then we started working
on the song and we're like, hey, that that goes
to E.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
That'll work.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
Oh wow, yeah, I know that's so great. I haven't Yeah,
that that just struck me. Sorry, that was really funny.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
That's so perfect.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
I don't know how many times, dude, it goes to eat.
Let's use that of the rip. It's like, all right,
let's try it, you know. Yeah, that's so funny.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
That's so perfect. Fun part of the songwriting. Cool, right,
You gotta love it when it's easy, right, Yeah, right,
you know, it's like, hey, I got this thing. Well
key is it in? Well it's d flat.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
Well actually so is this?
Speaker 6 (21:20):
Check it out.
Speaker 3 (21:20):
It's like right, okay, cool, let's write the chorus all right?
Speaker 2 (21:24):
You know, yeah, I'll give you a little.
Speaker 5 (21:26):
So we we are writing and recording like we want
to release something and not not another LP right away,
but we want to release some new songs and stuff
and on modern archae like we we Obviously it's a
very dramatic record and it's got a lot of changes
and a lot of you know, a lot of parts,
which is our bread and butter. But I on some
(21:49):
of the new ones, I brought in like this Americana
style styled one and uh.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
And then I brought in like this power pop one
and like this power pop one and it's just it's
all groove. I was like this, try the Heartbreakers effect
man and just same notes, different.
Speaker 5 (22:05):
Vibe, first chorus, first bridge, chorus, like bridge, and we're
all sitting here like in the first week, and this
is after doing songs like Buffalo for the last record,
and like two of the guys are like like Rafa
and Jim Bob are like I just feel like I
feel like it needs more, and I was just like, hey,
(22:27):
let's come back next week.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
Yeah, ye, and we'll just play it a bunch of times.
Let's not add anything.
Speaker 5 (22:34):
Now we didn't add anything to it, thank god, But like,
but like going to do a power pop are just
something greevy and friendly compared to like the record we've
been playing.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
It does sink in your mind, and like, we need
to make this more dramatic. There needs to be more
Floyd and less descendants. Keep combining the both. We'll be fine.
That's so funny.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
Yeah, shouldn't we had this other Wait, let's overcomplicate this thing.
It's like no, no, no, hold on. I love that
approach though that you had.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
That's so perfect.
Speaker 3 (23:12):
Yeah, how about let's just sit with it and come
back next week and see what happens, you know.
Speaker 5 (23:17):
Yeah, I mean I I love writing songs like Buffalo
and a lot of the ones on this record, and
we did that in two different veins on the last
like on the last record and this record. But this
record was just real awesome in that sense. And it's
just I think sometimes you have to like you have
(23:37):
to pull it back and not like we will get
back on that road.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
But I feel like.
Speaker 5 (23:43):
Giving yourself songwriting challenges and giving yourself like you don't
get stuck in a rut yep and outside my My
my rut is bpms because I like the feel good
bpms and sure it's it's always your drummer that will
remind you they want to go faster or slow right excite?
Speaker 3 (24:07):
So no, that's cool, that's awesome. Well let's do this.
Let's take a quick break, and then let's come back
and find out more. I don't know whatever you got
coming up next. If you want to talk about any
potential touring or anything you want to talk about, let's
just check into that in a minute. Sound good, cool man,
all right, cool, all right, hang out everybody, we'll be
right back. Thanks, all right, and we're back with Seth
(24:30):
from Nowhere Fast Seth. So what else do you got
coming up? Or what's the best way for people to
get in touch with you?
Speaker 6 (24:38):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (24:38):
Yeah, I mean like with the we just we are
getting ready to release some dates, you can find anything
like we use the url just nowhere Fast Music even
though we're nowhere Fast. But I know it used to
confuse people, but now they don't have to sift through
(25:00):
Smith's songs and eminem songs and Incubus songs, and that's
a fire movie that I never saw that always popped
up when you were trying to search just snow fast.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
But and we do. We got some videos that were
coming out.
Speaker 5 (25:16):
We do have some things in the works. We do
want to We're gonna record the record video, record the
record live, the new one, and just kind of release
the songs over the year.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
You know, Oh, that's cool just to have like a visual.
We don't.
Speaker 5 (25:35):
We're trying to get better at our YouTube. We're a
very small band. We have some some some fans and
we're fortunate for that, but we're still it's it's it's
d I Y in our camp like Hope and Rage.
Speaker 2 (25:47):
We're really happy to be with them.
Speaker 5 (25:49):
Peter and Lindsey have been really great to us and
so far and helping us up with a lot of stuff.
Speaker 3 (25:56):
So, no, that's cool. So how are you going to
do that? The the video part of that that's super
interesting to me. Is it like on some cinematic in whatever.
Is it more live performance like you're filming a show
and a venue of you doing all of it, or
is it just in it's.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
Gonna be like, how are you doing it?
Speaker 5 (26:16):
I think we're gonna use a buddy studio. He's got
a really gorgeous live room and just set up some
props and circle us in and we're just gonna do
it live. And that way we can you know, get
the pedal still in for the song Birmingham, because none
(26:37):
of us played pedal still.
Speaker 2 (26:38):
We had a pedal still buddy come.
Speaker 5 (26:40):
In and play that, sure, and then you know, we'll
have a buddy on second guitar and just just get
the whole nine yards. And to do that, I think
one of the things for us is doing the elector
like doing it live and giving people a sense of like, hey,
we pride ourselves on being a live band, and it's
(27:02):
one of our favorite things to do.
Speaker 6 (27:04):
You know.
Speaker 5 (27:04):
We love making records, but there's still nothing like you know, yes,
loading all the ridiculous gear and on stage and having
fun with it.
Speaker 2 (27:16):
Definitely.
Speaker 3 (27:16):
So then specifically, now I'm just curious with the song Burmingham,
when you play that live, do you have or do
not play that live? I'm curious, like, do you have
a pedal steel that plays with you or do you
just kind of skip that.
Speaker 6 (27:29):
Part or no?
Speaker 5 (27:32):
It is very integral in that song. And like when
I do like some solo runs and stuff, I'll just
do it with just me and then if Jim Bob's
with me on a solo run or whatever, it'll.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
Just be acoustic and keys.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (27:47):
Yeah, when we film it, yeah, we're gonna we want
the pedal still there. And of course none of us
play pedal still.
Speaker 5 (27:55):
Like it's definitely I think it's one of my bucket
list instruments.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
I do want to sit down and actually learn. I've
always wanted to do this.
Speaker 5 (28:03):
Yeah, but it doesn't mean I'm gonna be able to
sing this song, dude, because they can play pedal still.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
I get that.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
I get that.
Speaker 5 (28:10):
And plus like Roady, the guy who played ped'les still
on there, like he's just guys, he's amazing. Like working
on working with him on that song was just it
was just fun. It was great watching somebody come in
and play on your song. And granted even if they
(28:30):
are getting paid for like he got into it and
he cared about the craft on it. Oh that's great
and that that makes a huge difference definitely. But yeah,
for the for the filming, yes, that'll still we'll be there.
Speaker 3 (28:42):
Oh yeah, okay, cool, awesome, And then, like you said,
your the goal is just to kind of get that
for every song on the record and then just release
those throughout twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (28:53):
Yeah, we're gonna do the record.
Speaker 5 (28:54):
We're gonna do maybe a couple of older ones, okay,
maybe an unreleased one, just debut new song that way.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
Cool.
Speaker 5 (29:02):
We're just kind of doing what a lot of people
are doing, just kind of feeling out the new times
