(00:12):
Hello, everyone, greetings and salutations. Welcome back to another episode of the
Back of the Pack podcast. I'myour host, Kyle Walker. Thank you
so much for tuning in. Weare coming to you live from the very
bipolar Kansas City. We are aboutto hit every season in one week.
It's great. Right now it's abouteighty degrees humidity and thunderstorms are heading our

(00:33):
way. And then in the nexttwo days we have freeze advisories because we
are getting so called welcome to theMidwest in springtime. Good times, This
isn't it. But we are donewith another weekend of running. We did
the Easter Egg ten k this pastweekend, a fun little race in Overland
Park, Kansas, not a bigdeal. I did do something rather stupid,

(00:53):
though, And I know we've alldone this before, and I've certainly
done it several times, and Idid it again, so I'll tell you
about this. I actually talked myselfout of a race because of just the
stupidest thing. So we get tothe Easter Egg Race. It's not the
biggest race here in town. It'sone of our local ones. We do
it every year. No big deal. Five k and ten k, blah
blah, blah. We do itthrough the area they call South Creek Office

(01:17):
Park. A lot of us haverun South Creek Office Park before. Whenever
I do it, I've always doneit a certain way, like we have
a certain route that always happens throughSouth Creek. This year, when we
started the Easter Egg ten k,we did not start the way I'm used
to starting. Okay, we started, and we're going to go out the

(01:40):
starting line, do this little loopyloop thing through a parking lot, and
then I'm used to taking the leftinto another parking lot, going through that
parking lot in off to the streetwhere we go up and around to the
hospital and then down to the mainroad and then back around to the Yeah,
blah blah, blah blah, wedidn't do that. As we are
going down the very first hill andI look left where we're supposed to turn
left, we didn't turn left.We continued straight, thinking, oh no,

(02:05):
if we continue straight, We're goingto get to the course, the
end of the course that I'm usedto. So what Basically, this is
my long winded way of saying,we did it backwards. Doing this race
backwards means infinitely more uphill action.I love the South Creek Office Course because
it is all downhill, especially forlike the last mile of the race.

(02:27):
If you do it backwards, it'sall uphill, including the very first mile
of the race. So I talkedmyself out of having a good race right
from the go. Right from theopening bit where we make the left onto
it's a street called what is thatnall? It's either anall or row,
one of the two. I thinkit's nall. And we start going up
this long hill. Then I'm usedto coming down to finish the race,

(02:50):
so we're starting on an uphill.I'm doing the ten k. After the
first five k, I'm already outof it because like, this wasn't the
course I expected, and there weremore hills than I wanted. Just nothing
went right. So after having sucha great half marathon last week and in
Liberty, I laid an egg hahat the Easter Egg ten k, and

(03:12):
now I'm doing everything I can notto get in my own mind about Rock
the Parkway half marathon next weekend.Okay, I had a ten k.
I had a bad ten k hereon Saturday. It wasn't my worst time,
not even by far, but inmy mind it was not a good
race. In my mind, Idid not perform well, and now with
a half marathon on the horizon andhalf marathon that if you listened in last

(03:36):
week, I thought I wanted totry in PR. All right, I
did really well last week in Liberty. This was my little tune up run.
Then I was thinking maybe I'll tryfor a PR rock the Parkway,
And now a bad ten k isin my head, so I don't know
what I'm gonna do about Rock theParkway. We're gonna hope that this was
just a bad rehearsal before the reallygood performance coming up next weekend. So

(03:58):
that's what we're gonna go with.That's what I hope it's gonna happen.
But you know, we've all beenthere before, where when you start a
race and maybe something's different, oryou just get your mind in your own
mind that something isn't right or somethingthat is different, it can take you
out of your entire race. Andthat is sure as heck what happened to
me. Yes, this was racenumber two hundred and seventy six in my

(04:20):
lifetime, and I still can takemyself out of a race simply by not
making the left turn where I thoughtwe were gonna make the left turn and
by doing a course backwards that Ithought we were gonna do forwards, and
I just completely sucked at the easterEgg ten k So what are you gonna
do? What are you gonna do? But that leads us to our next

(04:43):
point. Next weekend is Rock theParkway. Rock the Parkway one of the
biggest half marathons in the Kansas Cityarea. Super excited, always look forward
to Rock the Parkway. My veryfirst half marathon all the way back in
twenty and eleven. It was thefirst half marathon I ever did. I
had a no idea what I wasdoing that morning. I still normally don't
have an idea on what I'm doingany race morning, but at least I've

(05:05):
had a few in between now andthen, so looking forward to it.
I will see all of you thatmorning at Rock the Parkway. I will
also see all of you on Fridayat the Rock the Parkway Expo. The
back of the pack podcast will havea booth set up, so I will
be there manning the table talking toeveryone as you come in and you get
your packets for the Rock the Parkwayhalf Marathon. So please stop by the

(05:30):
table and say hello. And ifyou are new to the podcast, then
I want to absolutely meet you andsay hi, and yeah, it's always
a good time. We had agreat time at the expo up in Liberty.
Now we're going to be at Rockthe Parkway, so good times coming
up. Then remember the week afterthat, So less than two weeks now,
I'll be in South Carolina, SouthKakilaki. Here I come for the

(05:50):
two Slow for Boston Marathon. Thisguy here quick, this one jumped up
and surprised me. I know,we just did a full marathon and Little
Rock last month in March, becausewe're now in April, but I still
don't feel like I'm ready for theToo Slow for Boston Marathon. But again,
we talked about it before, cantalk about it again. A race

(06:11):
with no time limit that celebrates runnerrunners of every skill level, every single
skill level, they celebrate them all. And so very much looking forward to
the Too Slow for Boston Marathon inGreer, South Carolina. That's where we're
going to be heading now in abouttwelve days. Twelve days and I'm on
the road, hammered down. Socool. We're moving on through spring running

(06:33):
season. Hooray. So this week. I thought it would be fun and
it's definitely one of the crowd favorites. To go ahead and talk about other
races. As we know, trynot to get emotional here. As we
know most of us didn't make theNew York City Marathon. They didn't like

(06:55):
us, they didn't take us.It's not fair. It made me okay,
I can't do that anymore anyway.Yes, we all got our results
for the New York City Marathon.Very few of us made it. There
are a few people who did.And for those of you who did make
it, who made the New YorkCity Marathon coming up in November, I
want you to know that for meand all of us here at the Back

(07:15):
of the Pack podcast, if there'sanything that we can do to help you
to better experience the New York CityMarathon, you just reach out. Let
me know. Remember I did therace back in twenty twenty one. Love
the experience. If there's any questionsyou have for someone who has done it
before, please feel free to reachout to me. I am more than
happy to talk about it because,as we know, the New York City
Marathon is easily one of my topfavorite three races. Two races. Isn't

(07:40):
my favorite race. I'd have tosit down and really think about it,
but the experience was amazing. Soif you made it, please feel free
to reach out with any questions youmight have that you feel I could answer
to all of us who didn't,and that's most of us. We did
not make the New York City Marathon. Better luck next year. A few
people are trying to get in oncharity bibs again, let us know how
we can help. But I thoughtit might be fun. Let's talk about

(08:03):
some other races. So they finallyreleased kind of the top fifteen best half
marathons coming up in twenty twenty four. A lot of people like dream races
and looking for new places to go, new adventures to have, so let's
talk about this. I am surethis list is in no way, shape
or form going to try and breakour hearts right off of the bat,
so let's dive in. These arelet me see here the fifteen fun half

(08:28):
marathons to run in twenty twenty four, as brought to you by Runners World,
and the very first race after wedidn't make the New York City Marathon,
the very first race we're going totalk about is the New York City
Half Marathon. Thanks, thanks somuch. This doesn't hurt at all.
Now, to be fair, thisrace does not take place as the same

(08:48):
time as the Big New York CityMarathon. This is a different race done
at a different time. But yeah, when I saw that was first on
the list, I'm like, thanksto just stick the dagger in a little
more. Don't forget twist at theend, jerks. So the location for
this is New York City. DateSunday, March seventeenth, twenty twenty four.
So this article came out late,it's already over. A lot of

(09:09):
people did hear about this race, and I heard it was actually really fun.
I'm putting it on my list ofhalf marathons I'd like to do.
I think this is otherwise known asthe brook Brooklyn Half Marathon if memory serves,
but either which way, a funrace through New York. It's already
over for the year, but keepit on your calendar for twenty twenty five.
The next one this is road Race'sNewport Half Marathon, and so the

(09:35):
road is RhoD As in Rhode Island. So this is in Newport, Rhode
Island, Saturday, April thirteenth, twenty twenty four. They really were late
getting this article out. Now Ikind of feel like a chucklehead for even
reading it, but again look fortwenty twenty five. If this race sounds
good, if you're fascinated by architecturaldigest home tours or love the Great Gatsby

(09:56):
era mansions, then the new PortHalf is the one for you. This
race is ba basically a sped upwalking tour of Rhode Islands affluent shoreline,
with the course passing numerous gorgeous estatesas it weaves its way through the seaside
town. The race then ends witha pizza party on the beach, complete
with complimentary sam Adams beer. Therace also partners with race joy for its

(10:18):
tracking, which chirps out fun factsabout local attractions. You pass a feature
that isn't widely publicized but is entertainingand informational. I've actually seen that before
the year that you did the COVIDyear that you could do the London Marathon
virtually they wanted you to do itthrough their app and they use this very
same feature. Where As you gotto like mile three and a half,
I would say, well at milethree and a half on the London Marathon.

(10:41):
If you were to look left, you would see blobby blah blah blah.
It's kind of a cool feature.Definitely not one that a lot of
races offer, But anytime you coulduse an app and get kind of a
tour while you're doing a race,I think that's a pretty cool thing.
I think more races need to dothat. That would be fun. The
next one five hundred Fustible Mini Marathon. This is in Indianapolis, Indiana,

(11:03):
Saturday, May forth. So youhave a chance if you're quick, and
this says Broom Vroom, you maybe running a bit slower than an Indy
car, which can hit speeds overtwo hundred miles an hour, but you
can still compete on the same track. The prestigious Indy five hundred happens every
spring, and then the lead upto the car race, runners are able
to participate in a half marathon thatincludes a lap of the two and a

(11:26):
half mile long circuit. Then it'sback towards the finish line and the checkered
flag. So yes, this isthe half marathon that takes you on the
Indy five hundred track. Used tobe that it finished on the Indy five
hundred track at the finish line wherethe cars finish. That is not the
case anymore, but you still getto do part of the track. You
get to go over the bricks ofthe finish line. I'm sure a few
people might stop and take photos there. But a race that has been on

(11:50):
my short list for a while thatI would like to get to the next
one Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon. But you'll never guess where or what
this race is about. The SantaBarbara Wine Country Half Marathon in Solvang,
California, Saturday, May eleventh, twenty twenty four, while drinking wine.

(12:11):
Interesting English here while drinking wine whilerunning might be ill advised. Celebrating a
completed thirteen point one with a glassor two of wine sounds lovely. The
organizers of this race agree, asthe post race party doubles as a wine
tasting festival. After jogging through vineyardsin southern California, you can sample local
wines with a festival pass. Nobetter way to mark your accomplishments with a

(12:35):
toast of sam mignon blanc and cheers. There we go. The next one,
the Acadia Half Marathon. The picturethey show here is quite beautiful.
Looks like it's along the lake shore. The courtesy Acadia Half Marathon. The
location, Bar Harbor, Maine,Sunday, June second, twenty twenty four.
One of the best features of theUnited States is its national park system

(12:58):
that preserves spectacular natural landscapes across thecountry. Several of these parks now host
half marathons, and one of themost gorgeous is in Mainz Scenic Acadian National
Park, starting and finishing in BarHarbor near Mount Desert Island ice Cream which
is a must try. The coursethen loops through the wooded island with stints
along the shore. You also mightget splashed by a thunder hole. You

(13:24):
might get splashed by thunder hole.Moving on, Oh, we've talked about
this one before, and this oneI still want to do, and that,
you know what, maybe in twentytwenty five we get a group to
go do this because this one soundslike so much fun. The Hatfield McCoy
BlackBerry Mountain Half Marathon and River RoadHalf Marathon. This is in Williamson,

(13:48):
West Virginia, Saturday, June eighth, twenty twenty four. Unless you're an
elite runner, you probably aren't enteringa half marathon trying to compete with anyone
but yourself and the pair of hasthat a company. The Hatfield McCoy Marathon,
however, are run in the spiritof feuding. The race splits up
its participants in the Hatfields and McCoy'sin. Whichever team has the faster collective

(14:11):
finished time gets bragging rights. Therace starts in a grocery store parking lot
where Hatfield McCoy reenactors fire off anold timey rifle. So the race is
really one of the kind. Yes, I've heard of this one before.
You can follow them on social media. They also put out their medals.
They're active, but it looks likea lot of fun and yes, the
bragging rights part of it would absolutelybe a blast. The next one,

(14:33):
this is a new one, theet Full Moon Half Marathon. Okay,
this is in Rachel, Nevada,Sunday, August seventeenth and eighteen, twenty
twenty four. Hold the phone. You want me to run a race in
the desert in August, Boy,you bet you better have some blame like

(14:56):
I have never seen before. Ifyou think I am running in the desert
in August, let us continue.Due to road closures and visibility most half
marathon runners our Most half marathons arerun on a weekend morning, but this
alien themed race is a full nighttime affair. Starting at midnight, runners
will be completing the thirteen point onecompletely in the dark and with a course

(15:20):
that nears the mysterious Area fifty one. You're liable to be sucked up by
a UFO mid race and never seenagain. All runners are required to wear
reflective vest and headlamps, with manyaccessorizing with glow sticks. Fingers crossed that
there are that any extraterrestrials you crosspaths with are more et and less alien.

(15:41):
Okay, so it's a nighttime racethat helps a little. That's still
the desert in August. I don'tknow. Next the Kowhai half Marathon.
Yeah, this won't be beautiful atall. This is in Poipoo, Hawaii,
saying that right Sunday, September one, twenty twenty four. Kawai has

(16:03):
been nicknamed the Garden Ale by Hawaiians, and even among the state's breathtaking collection
of islands, it stands out forits diverse flora and fauna. This half
not only provides views of Kawai's beachesand volcanic peaks, but also takes runners
through the tunnel of trees within theisland's lush tropical rainforest. The race starts
with island natives blowing conch shells, and roadside entertainment includes hula dancers, so

(16:30):
the race delivers the Hawaiian experience fromstart to finish. I'd run any race
in Hawaii just to be real, honest, I don't really care how beautiful
you tell me it is. It'sHawaii. I'm in next the Arches Half
Marathon. This is in Moab,Utah, Saturday, October fifth, twenty
twenty four. Perhaps describing the ArchesHalf Marathon as fun might be deceptive,

(16:55):
especially for unders looking for an easyrace with a full gamut of amenities.
Rather, this trail half marathon throughUtah's wilderness is a sun drenched affair that
is largely unsupported and requires runners tocarry their own water. What the race
lacks in ease, however, itmakes up for in natural splendor as it
winds its way between the Canyonlands andArches National Park. The race may be

(17:19):
difficult, but it will be rewarding. Take that however you want. I
won't see you there. Next isthe Detroit International Half Marathon. I'm pretty
sure we've talked about this before.Detroit, Michigan, Sunday, October twentieth,
twenty twenty four. Why have funrunning in one country when you can
have fun running in two. Detroit'sInternational Half Marathon not to begin, not

(17:42):
to be confused with a version thatremains solely in Michigan for those with visa
issues. Starts in the motor city'sdowntown before crossing the Ambassador Bridge into Windsor,
Canada. Runners then run along theriverfront past a Tim Hortons. You
may even get to may even getten bites on his donuts. I don't

(18:03):
know what Tim Horton's is. Iguess it don'tut place. Sorry, I
didn't mean to butcher that, butI was curious on what that is.
Let's see and through the tunnel backto Detroit in just thirteen point one miles.
You're an international world traveler, surethat would be one I would consider
doing. And let's see here.So next up we have the Disney Wine

(18:26):
and Dine Half Marathon. And Iknow we have a lot of fans of
the Disney races out there. Iwould love to do some myself. So
this is in Orlando, Florida,October thirty first through November third, is
what they list run. Disney hostsa number of themed halves every year,
but the race, celebrating Epcot's Foodand Wine Festival every fall, is a
highlight. The course itself is linedwith characters, photo ops, and entertainment.

(18:48):
This is not a race to prin and you run through several of
the Disney World parks and resorts.More importantly, though, entry comes with
a pass into the after party heldin Epcot that evening after the park closes.
Join fellow runners to sample the internationalfood and drinks and the best bonus
try out some of the most popularattractions without the long lines. The weekend

(19:11):
also includes a five K and tenK. Well that's cool, thanks,
just sounds kind of fun. Next, the Tulsa Roots sixty six half Marathon.
Now, I've done the full marathonin Tulsa, I've never done the
half, so let's see what theysay about that. This, of course
in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sunday,November twenty third, twenty twenty four.
Unless you've got a flat tire orran out of gas, chances Are you

(19:32):
haven't gone for a jog in onthe famed Root sixty six, Well,
yes, yes, I have.Tulsa's half marathon, however, gives you
that opportunity, and on the bridgeover the Arkansas River. No less.
The whole weekend is a zany communityaffair, with race organizers sending out block
party kits to those who live alongthe course, a separate race dedicated solely

(19:53):
to people dressed in mascot costumes, and even an optional zero point three mile
extension to the marathon to make itthe world's shortest ultra marathon. Tulsa is
putting on a party and you're justrunning through it. So yes, I've
talked about that before. If youdo the full for the Route sixty six,
make sure you do the Center ofthe Universe detour. That is that

(20:15):
zero point three mile dtour that makesit the shortest ultra ever and you get
to run through this really cool architecturalthing called the Center of the Universe.
You also get a challenge coin whenyou go through, so make sure you've
got a pocket you can zip orsomething, because they hand it to you
while you're doing it. You stillhave to finish the rest of your marathon
with that coin on you, sojust be ready for that. But yeah,

(20:36):
that's always fun and worth it.Next is the Thanksgiving Day half marathon,
located in Atlanta, Georgia, Thursday, November twenty eight, twenty twenty
four. The Turkey chron has becomea time honored Thanksgiving Morning tradition across the
United States in the past few decades, with many towns throwing tiny five case
for families who wish to get someexercise before eating forty eight pounds of candy

(20:59):
dam The Atlanta Track Club, however, has up the annie for their Turkey
Trot, providing a full half marathonfor runners to enjoy. People will be
dressed as pilgrims and turkeys, andyou might have to miss part of the
Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, but you'llbe so hungry for pie by the end.
I actually would be down for that. So here in our area in
Kansas City, a lot of fivek's one ten K that I know of,

(21:23):
but nothing more than that. Theten k is the most that we've
got. I would actually be downfor a Thanksgiving Morning half marathon. So
if any of our local race directorsare listening, and if you're not.
You should be. How about aThanksgiving Day half marathon. I'm in.
I'd be in for that. That'sjust me. Next is the Spartan beast
Ay. This is various, andthey put it on here because it is

(21:44):
in the running world. Here's thething, I don't know if I've talked
about it before. I don't likethe obstacle courses. I don't like the
obstacle runs. Not my jam.I tried it before, so way back
when there was a company out thereand some of you have heard of them
called Warrior Dash. I did twoWarrior Dashes. I did it the first
two years they came to my area. I thought they were terrible. They

(22:07):
were horribly organized, woefully conducted, and I didn't have any fun whatsoever.
Now I know that there are biggerand better ones. Now there's you know,
Spartan races, tough mutters, there'sother stuff. It is not my
jam. I did two of them. I didn't enjoy it. I was
out there the year that two peoplefreaking died at Warrior Dash because of the
heat and their lack of any kindof medical preparedness. That company's gone out

(22:33):
of business, So I don't careif them, but I don't dig on
it. So if you like it, by all means, have a great
time. And I'm sure they're fun. Is a novelty every now and again,
but that's not something you're ever goingto get a whole lot of coverage
on here on this podcast. Sorry, Ish, but that's not my jam.
So you know they say there's one, and I know Spartan races various
locations. Find one when it comesto your area. If it's your jam,

(22:55):
okay, cool. Moving on thenext one, the Space Coast Half
Marathon one. This is in Cocoa, Florida, December one, twenty twenty
four. This is the last onelisting on here. This waterfront race is
centered around a space theme as it'sin the vicinity of the Kennedy Space Center.
The half marathon is unique as thereare two different half marathon courses North

(23:17):
and South to choose from, butdon't worry, they're both mostly flat.
It is Florida, after all.If you're a NASA nerd, head for
the North courses as you'll catch someviews of the NASA Vehicle Assembly area.
You'll also get a spacy metal uponfinishing, plus a beach towel and moisture
wicking shirt and who knows, maybesee a rocket blast off. From my

(23:37):
understanding of the current US space program, their chances of seeing a rocket blasting
off or slim, if not none, but I suppose the chances aren't zero.
I wish they would say what thegood part of the South Loop is.
But anyway, so there are somehalf marathons for you to mull over
this year. I know a lotof us right now are already full up

(23:59):
on our running scale. It isinsane how much we've been booking out races,
both myself and other members of therunning community. One that we have
added, and I don't think I'vetalked about on the show before, but
we're going to Gulf Coast, Mississippiin December for the Gulf Coast Marathon.
I'm going to be doing the full, A lot of people are going to
do the half. It is alongthe Golf Shore down there in Mississippi and

(24:22):
the Gulf Mexico. So I amreally looking forward to that race. I
think that's going to be beautiful,if nothing else, and I'm hoping because
it is along the Gulf shore,it's going to be mostly flat. I
really don't see how you can throwa whole lot of hills at us when
we're at sea level. That's justme. I've been wrong before, But
I would take a nice, flat, little course along the ocean side.

(24:44):
I think it should beautiful and inDecember, hopefully it will not be too
terribly hot and humid. But younever know what the universe is gonna throw
at us when it comes to runningweather, because as I said at the
start of the show, the Kansasweather right now has gone crazy, and
it's going to be crazy throughout therest of this week. So goodness only
knows, So what's gonna happen. So that's kind of what we've got coming
up. We've got stuff coming up. These are some races that you might

(25:06):
want to add to your calendar ifany of them sounded great, And of
course I'm sure they all have socialmedia presences you can follow. They all
have websites if you want to lookinto it further. There are some that
are connecting together and you can formkind of your own running series, like
the Gulf Coast one in Mississippi ishooked up with a Louisiana race in January.
They're offering a challenge if you dothe both of those together. So

(25:26):
again things to look into the races. Really understand that the challenges, the
shirts, the bling, that iswhat is bringing people to these races.
That is what's getting people like meto travel around. We like doing challenges,
We like cool medals, So themore races that go to it,

(25:47):
the better chance you got. Soagain, race directors whoever aren't listening to
me, up your metal game. You're gonna get more people. That's just
the truth of it. When wedid our race back in the fall last
year, the race for the Backof the Pack podcast that we called the
Casey Hustle Run, we knew ourmedals had to be money, and I
still think they were, but wewanted people. You got to have the

(26:07):
medals. So that's just kind ofhow I look at it. Other races
look at it that way. LittleRocks certainly looked at it that way.
Again, still loving the medals, but that's big and something we will always
be talking about here on the podcastRaces with Cool Metals, and always look
for our post on Metal Monday socialmedia wise Instagram, Facebook, Metal Monday,
we do a post we talk aboutthe medal that we got for the

(26:29):
weekend and then we definitely want youto please share your picture with your medal
from whatever you earned that weekend,or if you need to, if you
didn't run that weekend, go onthe way back machine and show us cool
metal that you learned previously. Soagain we've got metal Mondays. We are
still kicking around the Tuesday idea.We had two awesome ideas for Tuesdays.
We might alternate between the two.So we're gonna get to that one traveling

(26:52):
Tuesday where you post a picture ofa race you did kind of outside of
your local area and training tip Tuesday. I think we're gonna all once we
get that going Wednesdays. We're stilllooking for a social media theme. Thursday's
a race shirt Thursday for wear arace shirt that you like and post that
FLA Fridays or flashback Fridays an oldpicture from a previous racer ran from however

(27:12):
long ago you feel like going. So that's it. One thing I would
like to challenge us to do.The YouTube channel is woeful. Can we
up our YouTube numbers if you wouldbe so kind, Even if you don't
really watch this podcast or listen toit on YouTube, but you have a
YouTube account, will you go findthe Back of the Pack podcast and just
give us a like, and makesure it's our new logo, you know,

(27:34):
kind of like the one on myhat, not the old one,
not the old tealing white one.Because I know that old channel was still
up. I have no control overthat channel. I can't delete that channel,
