Speaker 1 (00:12):
Hello, everyone, greeting and salutations. Welcome back to another episode
of the Back of the Back Podcast, second one. I'm
your host, Kyle Walker. Thank you so much for tuning in.
We are wrapping up our series today and trust me,
I am not going to keep you along. I understand.
It's Friday, it's Labor Day weekend, the unofficial end of
summer is here, and so you've got bigger and better
things to do. Then listen to me ramble on for
(00:32):
twenty to thirty minutes about running. It's yeah, I get it,
I get it. Fine, fine, be like that. Look a
few things just to go over right quick. You might
be wondering why lately I've been wearing so many green shirts,
and I bet you actually didn't wonder that even like
a little bit. But I'm going to tell you we
have some exciting things coming down the pipe for the
Back of the Pack podcast. We are working on a
(00:53):
new studio in Casa day Walker that I think is
going to be really cool. And instead of stuff just
on the back here, which as much as I love
it and it is all running related, also has a
rather amateur look to it. We've got a green screen
that we're going to be using. But there's one color
shirt that you can't wear when you're using a green screen.
I'll let you go ahead and work out what color
(01:14):
that might be. Just take a guess, Yeah, who knows,
who knows. But anyway, we've got some exciting stuff coming again.
We are now two hundred and well this will be
two hundred and two episodes into this venture, and things
are going well, things are looking up, and so we
actually want to try and up the production value. Just
(01:34):
give you a little more bang for your buck, so
that maybe you'll give us a buck and then then
we'll all be happy, right, it'll be great. So last
week on this particular podcast on Second Wind, we did
our two hundredth episode. It was far greater than I
could have ever anticipated. And for this whole month, you know,
here on Second Wind, we've been doing a lot more series,
(01:55):
you know, just breaking off one big topic but handling
it week by week by week. In this whole month,
we've been leading up to the two hundredth episode, but
of course the last Friday of the month we've already
had it. So what are we gonna do. We're gonna
break down the two hundredth episode and I'm just I'm
gonna give the flowers where they're due to all those
people who contributed to the great success of that episode,
(02:17):
and I think it was successful. It is absolutely my
favorite episode that we've done because it was just so
much fun seeing all these faces of people that three
and a half years ago, I didn't really know any
of them, like none, like none of the people that
appeared on that episode were even remotely close to in
my life as the term goes when before we started.
(02:39):
So it was just it was pretty astounding to me,
just the love and the community that we've been building
over three and a half years that you thankfully are
a part of. You might have seen I put on Facebook.
I did a little poll to see kind of, you know,
how people enjoy the podcast, you know, if they're religious listeners,
or if they're occasional listeners, if they've never listened, or
(02:59):
if they're just kind of there for the online community.
And honestly, we had answers from every category, so it's great.
Not everyone is a religious podcast listener, and that's fine.
Some people only get the episodes every once in a while,
that's fine too. If you're only there because our Facebook
page is awesome, and it is then great, you know,
thank you for being a part of it. So really
(03:20):
I've been having a great time this whole month of August,
just trying to learn more about the listeners and the
viewers and what people like, and then bringing you guests
and special appearances. And it was a great time. But
I know I'm rambling right now. Let me go over
real quick, everyone who appeared. If you did not see
last week's episode, please go back and watch. You can
see the video on YouTube. Second Wind episodes are always
(03:42):
on YouTube, and then of course you can listen to
it everywhere that you get your your podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Apple, whatever, Podbean.
I didn't know podbean was a thing, but some people
listen to podbean. So anyway, last week's episode, it started
with me rambling. Okay, after that we got to Chelsea
and Pink Gorilla events and that is the representation of
(04:04):
the good life haves e. And did you guys see
the production value of that little snippet? How cool was
that that Chelsea took her She took her time, and
there was no way that was quick. Took her time
to make that video and bring you some snippets from
the Good Life haves E, which runs November ninth in Lincoln, Nebraska. Yes,
she even mentioned in the video that is still my
(04:26):
half marathon. Pr the only half marathon that I have
sub two and a half hours. And yeah it was
two twenty nine fifty, but that is sub two and
a half hours. So if you want a fast half marathon,
if you want okay, now I hope I'm not jinxing it.
The two years I've run this race, wonderful weather and
I mean perfect weather. If you want that, look at
(04:49):
the Good Life haves E. So a huge thank you
to Chelsea, Pink Gorilla Events and The Good Life HAVESI
for submitting that video for our two hundredth episode. That
was awesome. She filmed from around the Good Life has
the course, which was really cool. She was there at
the start, she was there at the finish and spots
in between. It is a beautiful course, a beautiful morning,
a fast race in the end, I tell you, is
(05:11):
worth all of it. The huge party at the end
is wonderful. The downhill finish to the finish line. Let
me tell you, when you're coming up and you're in
that last mile and you're really struggling, and you look
and like, oh my goodness, I have to go up
this huge thing and around to get on this bridge
that kind of goes over the road. Once you make
it to the top of that, if you have any
(05:32):
juice left, you just fire all jets because it is
just straight downhill to the finish line, a very fast finish.
So The Good Life HAVESI is definitely still my favorite
half marathon. It's my pr it's my only sub two
and a half. So thank you very much Chelsea for
sending that video. That was awesome. The next one a
shout out to our buddy William will your video. If
(05:56):
you get the joke, then it's pretty stink and hilarious.
I'm not gonna explain the joke. If you get the joke,
it's pretty funny. If you think back to former partners
and production companies of the Back of the Back podcast,
the joke makes a little more sense. But will thank
you very much for submitting that. I know it was
(06:17):
only just a couple of seconds, but uh, well played, sir,
well played. That was pretty funny. Next after William was
our favorite guest host, our absolute favorite guest host, Karen
from The Just Grow Something podcast. Yes, she has been
the guest host of this podcast whenever I've been gone
at a race or something's come up. She has handled
more episodes than anyone else. And again, no disrespect to
(06:39):
the people who have who have substituted before, but Karen
is my absolute favorite. She brings an element to this
podcast that I cannot all right, And as she says,
she gives you the science facts and she does, and
she's good at it, and it explains why her podcast
is so successful and why her podcast, again Just Grow
Something podcasts. She is an award winning podcast host. I'm
(07:03):
not making that up. She has won awards for her
podcast because she is so good, because it is so good.
If you are into the gardening and farming world, that
Just Grows Something podcast is absolutely what you should be
listening to because Karen is absolutely top notch. Why she
gives this little piddly podcast the time of day, I
don't know, but she is our favorite guest host. She
(07:25):
brings all the knowledge and so Karen, thank you very
much for submitting it. She even brought podcast numbers with
her on the two hundredth episode, which was really cool
and yes, it did make me feel a little better that.
Even though I want this podcast to be bigger and
better and greater and more, we're still pretty darn good
in the podcasting world. We're consistent, we get episodes out
(07:47):
when we're supposed to. We do pretty well on downloads,
even though it's not like we're gonna keep up with
the New Heights podcast. Those rat bastards just had Taylor
Swift on, So I'm dead in the water now compared
to them. Good grief. That is not fair. That's not
fair that you can bring on the most popular person
in all the creation right now, what are the rest
(08:09):
of our podcasts supposed to do? We can't all get
tea swizzle? Ridiculous, ridiculous. But anyway, thank you, Karen. That
was super great and super awesome. Next up, we're Gretchen
and a Lane, our buddies from Saint Louis, Missouri and
the Happy Pace Podcast. Now, if you don't know the
Happy Pace podcast, and you should, but if you don't,
they're the only podcast that we know of. They record
(08:31):
their podcast while they're running, Yeah, while they're out doing
their thing. They'll bring on guests and they'll interview people
and it's all while they are out on their run,
so I couldn't do it. Remember I tried. I tried
one time. You can actually go back and listen to
their episode that I did, or I was on where
they miked me up for the Westport Saint Patrick's Day
(08:51):
four miler, and so just miked up and they didn't
hang out with me on that one. They ran their
own race, So it's basically me talking to myself and yeah,
I got some really strange looks out there and like
narrating as we did the Westport Saint Patrick's Day four mile. Now,
don't get me wrong, I had an absolute blast. I
had a ball doing that. It was it was so
much fun. But I now understand the difficulty of running
(09:16):
and podcasting at the same time, Like it's not easy.
It was hard to kind of keep talking and catch
my breath and not sound like I was completely gassed,
which I was. But we had a great time. And
I also want to thank them for coming up that weekend.
They came up to celebrate the podcast three year anniversary,
which is always the Westport Saint Patrick's Day four miler
where we always get together at Kelly's Westport End after
(09:38):
the race and raise a glass of whatever you choose
to the podcast. They stayed, they hung out with us.
It was a great time. And so we love the
Happy Pace podcast. I'm not wearing their hat, but I
got a hat made for them so that I can
wear it sometimes on the podcast. But they are doing
awesome things. And another thing and credit to them, So
someone told me, you know, as we're doing our okay,
(10:00):
as we're doing the Chasing Rabbits run club and we're
getting all that going, that we sometimes should oh what's
the word? It just escaped me. It was in my head.
Now it's gone. But we should all carry like a
bag and maybe a grabber and make a run where
we're picking up the trash along the way where everyone
needs to be picking up trash along the way. And
there's a term for it is a plotting plunking something.
(10:23):
But the Happy Pace does this. They do this on
the regular, right, it wouldn't just be a special thing
for them to do because they do it all the time.
They're very big on conservation, on picking up after other runners,
on keeping their parks that they're running clean, and so
a huge shout out to Happy Pace podcast for all
the work that they do in picking up the trash
keeping areas nice. They do some really good work. Again,
(10:46):
there was the time they did a whole event picking
up trash and there was something like twelve full trash
bags extending as far as the frame of the camera
would go. And that was just all the trash that
they had all collected along their runs. So huge shout
out to them. They're doing some really good stuff down
in Saint Louis and they're a very enjoyable podcast to
listen to. You just got to get over the fact
(11:06):
that they're running while they're doing it. I couldn't. I
the one time I tried. It didn't anyway, all right,
So next up. Okay, she knows this is coming. You
know your receipts coming. All right, here we go. Let's
let's be serious here. I gave you a year whole
time during the two hundredth episode. I didn't edit, I
didn't cut any of it. But Lisa from Behind the Bib,
(11:30):
all right, lady, listen here. So if you don't know,
Lisa is from the Behind the Bib podcast, pot Behind
the Bib podcast, Hello Words out of Huntsville, Alabama. She
took exception to when we did the series back in
June or July. I think it was July. The Run
the Nation series here on Second Wind when we did
(11:53):
the South. The list that was created, the list that
was in front of me of Southern races included the
Flying Pig. Flying Pig is done in Ohio. It's done
in Cincinnati, Ohio, which is a golf shot away from Kentucky. Now, Kentucky,
(12:16):
no one would argue as a Southern state. Now, I
have a lot of family who came from Kentucky. They
are a lot of family I don't particularly care for,
so I'll try not to completely run Kentucky in the ground.
It's definitely a Southern state because their IQs are no
bigger than their shoe size. And I kid, except for
my very distant, very separated family in Kentucky, y'allock idiots.
(12:38):
Other than that, Kentucky's You're just Fine. The favorite my
favorite podcast that I listened to is out of Louisville, Kentucky's,
and I just was in Louisville, So now I'm not
actually ragging on Kentucky, just like certain group of them anyway,
But Flying Pig is in Cincinnati. It is right across
the water from Kentucky, So I can see why this
(12:58):
list included is it right? No? Is Ohio a southern state? No?
Did you have to go and ask fifteen hundred people
if it was or wasn't? No? Anyway, so if you
didnt see it on the two hundredth episode at one
of the run clubs, and I hope I is it
the Oh jeez, it was one of the Huntsville run clubs?
(13:22):
Was it rocking? Is rocket in there? And like the
Huntsville Rocket Runners or something like that. There's been several
of them, but Lisa took the microphone around and asked
many of them if Ohio was a northern or southern state,
and of course everyone said northern, except for the guy
who said something like it shouldn't be a state at all,
or who cares whether it is? Or something? Someone had it.
There was a couple of snarky responses in there that
(13:43):
I thought were kind of funny. But yes, we know
Ohio is a northern state. We'll just we'll put this
to bed right now. It mentioned Flying Pig, which is
close to Kentucky, and I don't know, I think a
toe of that race might actually touch Kentucky. If memory
serves either which way. It's not a big deal either way.
And so we know that it's a northern state. I
(14:04):
didn't make the list. I simply regurgitated what was in
front of me Flying Pig, though I hear is a
very fun race. I haven't done it, but yes, it
is a Cincinnati, Ohio race, a stone's throwaway from Kentucky.
I A'm not claiming a southern It was the list
that was in front of me. And now, Ohio, you
may be laid to rest in this particular debate. How
(14:25):
about that? So anyway, but behind the BIB, they are
about thirty one thirty two episodes strong at this point,
so they have already surpassed all the records of you know,
between failed and successful podcasts. They are a successful podcast
continuing to grow. And I'll give Lisa all the credit
in the world. She is so much better at like
TikTok's and reels and the really short things, the really
(14:48):
you know, short video stuff than I am way better.
Far surpasses anything the Back of the Back podcast does.
So they're doing great work down at hunts Ball Alabama,
got the whole southeast kind of on lockdown there, and
then I will meet her and all of them in
person in Mississippi in December at the Gulf Coast Marathon.
So I'm very much looking forward to that. That's going
to be a lot of fun. Next up, we had Amy.
(15:10):
So Amy is not a public figure. She is not
someone you're going to see out in much of the
running world. Amy is someone that I met in Little
Rock when I was running the booth at the Little
Rock Marathon. Now she resides in Saint Louis. She is
our longest tenured and I'm gonna say highest paying patron
(15:31):
that the podcast has. She has been the full marathon
tier for quite a while now, so she is one
of the people helping to keep this podcast afloat, one
of few people helping to keep this podcast afloat. So
I was thrilled when she submitted a video I met her,
and because she is a full marathon tier patron, when
(15:53):
she sent me a message and said, hey, can you
cover this race for the podcast? Well, if you're a
full marathon on tier patron, my answer is yes. And
so we went to Rolla, Missouri last year to do
the honoring our heroes. I was gonna do the full
I dropped down to the half. It was just made
more sense to me. But I did the Honoring Our
Heroes race in Rolla, Missouri last year, and it was
(16:15):
at her request. It is because she asked me to
cover that race for the podcast, and I will gladly
do it. Full marathon tier. Patrons, you get to call
the shots. If you want me to do a race,
I'm doing that race just as soon as I possibly can,
because you are the reasons this podcast has continued to grow, y'all.
Podcasting is not free. I'm just letting you know, straight
(16:37):
up and down, this costs money, and I pay that
money out of the Walker family household funds when it
can't be covered by what we bring in through Patreon
and through the podcast platform monetizations, which I think I
got an email from Facebook, and y'all, I'm about done
with putting videos on Facebook. I think I made thirty
(16:59):
four cents from Facebook. Thirty four cents, babe, look at
it now. So if you're wondering what kind of monetization
the podcast people get, yeah, I got thirty four cents
from Facebook. Hooray. Now, Really, it is the patrons that
keep us alive. It is everyone who's who is on Patreon,
and again I give you everything I can. She mentioned
(17:20):
the after action reports. You get the after action reports,
all of them. Any tier, whether you're five K, ten K,
half or full tier, you get the after action Reports,
which is just the written up review of all the races.
I will give you a discount code for our merchandise store,
and I get it. You don't want to buy like
a whole home decor at back of the pack podcast stuff,
that's fine, but you can get a couple T shirts maybe,
and you get them discounted because you're a Patreon level member.
(17:43):
And so without her, we would be struggling mightily, may
not even still be going at this point. So to
all the Patreon members, Amy and Clint are two full marathons.
We have many half marathon as well. Many's a strong word,
but all you half marathon tier, even the fives. To
everyone who gives through Patreon, thank you all so very much. Honestly,
(18:05):
I can't thank you enough for all that you do
for this podcast. You really are the reason that's still going.
After that, we had Cody and Katie who just submitted
a little blurb. They are the Travis Kelsey and Taylor
Swift of the Kansas City Running World now just got engaged,
so they're gonna be doing their married thing, silly people
that they are. But thank you very much for seeing Hello.
(18:26):
Cody battling injury right now, which sucks. Hopefully he's well
on the road to recovery. And then Katie, you're going
to see her later. She is actually going to be
a guest coming up in September, so you're going to
get to meet her learn more about her story. She
is one of the most consistent pacers you'll see here
in town. We have our super pacers. We have Melissa
(18:46):
who left the area. We've got Ambassador Amy, and we
got Katie. All three of them are pacers of the
highest caliber. There are many more, but those are the
three that I'm going to throw out that right now.
So Cody and Katie, thank you very much. Next, we
have Hillary running up. That Hillary from deep in the
heart of Texas, our big time running influencer and now
podcast hosts. She has her podcast This Day in Running History,
(19:10):
which is going and man, I can't imagine how much
work she does. She has to be doing amazing amounts
of work because that podcast is coming out daily, daily, daily, daily,
and she's killing it. And I'm looking and I'm seeing
on YouTube she's a you know, five hundred something in views.
She's bringing on Olympic athletes, She's bringing on running legends
(19:32):
and doing interviews with them. She brought on some chump
from the Back of the Back podcast for an episode
and we talked about Carl Lewis. So, Hillary, thank you
very much for submitting your video. I enjoyed it. Again,
we met in Vegas just I knew of her on
Instagram and reached out. It's like, hey, let's record an episode.
And we sat in a bar in Vegas and recording
(19:52):
an episode. And then we've done a couple episodes just here,
and then I was on hers and so she has
been wonderful in really building up the whole running community
because she she builds it up. Like if you are
on her Instagram and you should be running up that
Hillary two else, then you will see everything she's doing
(20:13):
for the running world, and it is it is impressive.
And she certainly bites off way more than I could
ever chew. But yeah, she's good stuff. So Hillary, thank
you very much. Everyone go get her a follow on
Instagram again. She is thousands upon thousands upon thousands of followers.
So she is a big deal. She's our big time
running influencer, our celebrity if you will. I'm just trying
to think of all the buzzwords now that I know
(20:33):
drive her nuts. But yeah, I'm gonna just throw them
out there whenever I think of him. So big celebrity you.
And then we finished up with Andrew, that KC cosplay runner.
I don't know what his costume was. I'm thinking he
looked a lot like it was a mix of Albert
Einstein and the old guy from Up. But he closed
out our episode in one of his crazy costumes. Again
(20:56):
the case cosplay Runner runs every race for charity, dresses
up in a different costume for every race. Poses will
take pictures with the kids, We'll take pictures with you.
Loves the interaction of the people. He does social distancing runs,
which started, of course during the Rona, where he would
(21:17):
just go out when all the races were canceled and
run and people could run with him, and he was
still in costume, and he still does those today. So
you'll either see him on the social distance race or
you'll see him at one of the races around town.
But either each way, ohways, some kind of elabit crazy costume,
and again he is raising money for charities. He has
social media presence, so find him on Facebook and Instagram,
(21:40):
give him a like, give him a follow. But he
is always so fun the rest of us in the
Running family, and as it were, we always wonder. It's like, Okay,
we know Andrew's going to be here, do you guys
know have you figured out what his costume is this week? No?
I didn't get the clues because he'll put clues out
there and then he'll get there, and a lot of
times we have to ask him like I don't get it, oh,
wait on, and then he'll tell and we should have
(22:00):
gotten it. But you know, just sometimes the anticipations too much,
we can't think clearly. But thank you to him for
closing this out. So that is. That was our two
hundredth episode, so cool. I hope to continue this on
for one hundred, two hundred, three hundred more. A lot
of that depends on the all go to the Patreon
page since we talked about it since it came up,
(22:23):
and help us out there if you will. But yeah,
pretty soon we're gonna have a nice new background, pretty soon,
we're gonna hopefully upgrade the audio, make it a little
less echoey. We've got things that we want to do.
It's all, you know, kind of in due time. Though
it can't happen overnight. Wish it could, but it can't.
So that is it. That is two hundred episodes. Tomorrow,
I'm gonna be running the Ottawa Half Marathon, so we've
(22:44):
got that coming up, just lessened. Well, in twenty four
hours from one numb recording, I'm going to be on
the course a few miles deep in a brand new
race here in the area. Well in the area is
a strong word, an hour away from where I'm at
in Ottawa, Kansas for the Autawa Half Marathon two five
k after that busy holiday weekend, and then we'll be
back on Monday, even though it's Labor Day, probably with
(23:05):
another shortened episode, but we'll get something out there, just
kind of recapping our weekend events. So that'll be our
next one, and then next week week from today on
Second Wind, we're gonna be starting a new series. I've
got a few in the works. I'm not sure which
one we're going with yet, but we've got a few
series in the works that we're gonna do that I
think are gonna enjoy. Okay, so remember second win episodes
are on YouTube. Please please please please go subscribe to
(23:28):
the YouTube channel, the Back of the Pack Podcast. Okay,
find us on YouTube. The V is very important. If
you don't use the V you might go to our
old page. If you see an old page with only
like forty subscribers, that is not our current page anymore.
That's the one we lost in our divorce with the
other production company, and so we don't care about that page.
You're not gonna find new episodes on that I can
get roll and tee. You need to go to the
(23:49):
Back of the Pack Podcast on YouTube. Find us subscribe.
We're almost a three hundred, which is kind of cool.
I'd rather be like three thousand, but we're getting there.
We're working on it. So that's gonna do it for
this week's episode of the Back of the Pack Podcast. Second,
I'm your host, Kyle Walker. Thank you so much for
tuning in. Everyone, have a safe week of training. Thank
you so much for all your support over two hundred
and two episodes now and we will see you next week.
