Speaker 1 (00:11):
Hello everyone, greetings and salutations. Welcome back to another episode
of the Back of the Back podcast Second Went. I'm
your host, Kyle Walker. Thank you so much for tuning in. Yes,
things look a little different, don't they a little odd?
I decided to use my newly installed metal rack as
a background just for this one episode as we are
changing things around here in Kasa day Walker to hopefully
(00:31):
have a better podcast studio by the time we're done.
So apologies if this is a little echoe. I'm in
a room I'm not used to being in for recording.
We're trying to work things out and hopefully by Monday
things are going to be a little different. Now. I
know that this week I promised you that we were
going to talk about night running and we were going
to continue on the run if you Dare series. However,
we had to make a pivot. We had to make
(00:53):
a little bit of a change because it occurred to me.
This is the last episode of season three of the
Back of the Pack podcast, whether it be Back of
the Pack Podcast original or Second Wind. We use the
Garmin Kansas City Marathon as kind of our our end
of season beginning of season just a great way to
learn to kind of move the calendar over. And this
(01:15):
is the last episode we're gonna do before the Garman
Kansas City Marathon coming up here tomorrow. And I'm recording
this a few days in advance because right now you're
probably seeing me down at the Garman Kansas City Marathon
expo where we'll have the table. So if you hear
this in the morning, come find me in the afternoon
when you're getting your packet, say hello. We're gonna be
when you go inside Union Station and you go inside
(01:37):
the expo, look to your right. We're gonna be along
the right side of the wall, kind of halfway down.
Make sure you find the back of the pack podcast booth.
I would love to see you there. So we're not
gonna talk about night running this week. We're gonna change
things up a little bit because this is our season
three finale, and so what we're gonna talk about are
just some of the races that we did over the
course of this last year, some of the people we've
(02:00):
had on some of the experiences that we've had. Because
after going back and looking at it, we have done
a lot of stuff in this past year. It was
a little crazy. So of course, we started the beginning
of season three with the Garman Kansas City Expo. Ran
it last year, and I remember that race very well.
I stuck with the two forty five pacers the entire time.
This new little flirty couple of Cody and Katie, who
(02:24):
of course are now are the Travis Kelcey and Taylor
Swift of the Kansas City running world as they're engaged,
and they just went and did Berlin together, and they
just ran the Chicago Marathon together. But I ran that
race with them and listened to them be flirty for
two hours and forty four minutes and like fifty five seconds.
Great job, Katie on your pacing. But we know you're
(02:44):
very good at this, and that is how we started
season three. Immediately after that, we went up to Lincoln,
Nebraska for the Good Life Havesie, So that race was
held in October. I've told you before it always cracks
me up that that race depends on the Nebraska Cornhusker
foot ball schedule on when they can run their race.
So it always cracks me up when you have to
do that race. So last year was at the very
(03:06):
end of October. Kind of yeah, towards the end of October,
we went up in Debt did that. It was our
first year having a booth at their expo as well.
And I will still say nothing but love to my
Garman Kansas City Marathon, nothing but love to Little Rock.
But the expo at the Good Life Haves the still
blows every other expo away, at least expos that I've
(03:27):
been to as a vendor that I've been to to
talk and meet with people. Good Life Haves the xpo woo.
It is wild. It is rocking from start to finish
because they have a very small window in which you
have to get your packet and so people are going
through there. This year, I will be back with another
booth and they are sold out, sold out with over
(03:50):
eight thousand runners I think I saw on social media.
So it is going to be another hoppin' crazy expo
and I am here for it. That expo is going
to be on November eight, So if you're going to
link Nebraska, make sure you find me at the Good
Life have Z Xpo. Next one, we went down to Rolla,
Missouri for the Honoring Our Heroes half marathon. Originally was
(04:10):
signed up for the full marathon, thought no, no, maybe
I need to not be so optimistic, backed it off
to the half and had a great time. That was
a race requested by super Patreon patroon Amy who again
without her support, this podcast is not still going. Without
the supporters of the people on Patreon, this podcast is
(04:32):
not still continued. Of course, we still desperately need help.
I have done episodes about this before. I'm not gonna
harangu on it too much, but if you feel like
helping the podcast through your giving, please find us at
patreon dot com. Backslash Back of the Pack podcast five
dollars a month. Man, it goes so far. I cannot
tell you how helpful it is. But we did not
race because it was requested by our highest patron. So
(04:56):
you go to the highest level, you say, Kyle, run
this race and review it. Yes, sir, Yes, ma'am. I'm
one hundred percent in. After that, once we flipped the
calendar over, we went to Las Vegas. Hopefully you saw
the episodes surrounding the Rock and Roll Las Vegas five
K half Marathon in remixed challenge. I love Vegas. It
is my home away from home, so I will go
to Vegas whenever possible. I am super bummed that I'm
(05:18):
not gonna be able to go in twenty twenty six.
I really wish that I could, but I can't because
of a little race coming up at the end of
February in the beginning of March. So yeah, And then,
of course it wasn't all sunshine, rainbows and puppy dog kisses.
Last season. Season three brought around our first DNF, And
(05:38):
when I say hours, I mean mine. My very first
DNF happened in Mississippi at the Gulf Coast Marathon, where
at mile nineteen I was pulled for medical because my
blood sugar tanked and I was having a terrible time.
Hindsight always being what it is. I feel like such
a shmo for being pulled off that course. Why didn't
I power through? Why didn't I try and do better?
(06:00):
Why didn't I suck it up? Why didn't I goggins it?
Oh boy, that guy and just you know, fight through
all of it. Well, you know what, they didn't let
me for one and be it wouldn't have been a
good decision. Pulling me was the right decision. Now I'm
absolutely going back. That's going to be part of season
four as we get that started I'll be back in December.
I know I'm gonna meet some folks down there, but yeah,
(06:22):
that race, I'm coming for you, and there is not
gonna be a second DNF. I've already got things I'm
taking with me. I've already got plans in place, because
if you don't learn from your mistakes, you're doomed to
repeat them. But I guarantee I am not repeating that
mistake again. After that, we went to Alabama. We did
the Big Beach Half Marathon that was in Gulf Shores, Alabama,
(06:45):
right along the line of Alabama and Florida. Loved that race,
loved it. I can't recommend it enough. If you guys
want a fun January race that is not going to
be super cold and that's a good time, I recommend
the Big Beach half Marathon or full marathon. We did
the Safari Challenge, so I did the seven k the
day before the half marathon. The next day, had a
(07:05):
wonderful time. The weather warmed up, it was beautiful. I
like that town. I like goolf Shores. Went to that big, big,
famous bar of Florabama, which is right on the border
of Florida in Alabama. Super fun, there, traveled with some
friends who did the race as well, had a wonderful time.
So really, I can't recommend that race enough. When we
also went to Little Rock, Arkansas. Back to Little Rock,
(07:27):
this time only for the half marathon. Did the full
last year, half this year, did two days of the expo,
did the five k half marathon Challenge. If you haven't
done the Little Rock Race, I do recommend it, all right.
It might not be one that you decided to do
every year. You might not go back year at year
of year at year, but I do recommend you do
it once. And I recommend if you need a full
(07:49):
marathon you do their full because you've got to get
that metal at least once. I'm telling you you got
to get that metal at least once. Now, from what
you're seeing here on your screen, my rock metal is
down there, but you can't see it here. But trust me,
it is hanging proudly because I earn that big honkin medal.
And even the half marathon medals are gigantic, don't get
(08:10):
me wrong. They are bigger than most of the half
marathon medals that you're gonna come up with. So yeah,
don't feel like you're getting slided. If you do the half,
the half is wonderful. The half is a great time,
and you will still get a really big Honkin medal.
We also went to Louisville. We went and did the
Kentucky Derby five k half marathon Challenge. Very nice race.
I don't know why it didn't leave the big impression
(08:32):
in my life that a lot of these other races did.
It was a perfectly lovely time. I had a blast
going to the Louisville Slugger Museum. The race itself not difficult,
good weather, It just it didn't leave a lasting impression.
A nice race. If you need Louisville or if you
need Kentucky, go right ahead. I recommend it. It's not
a bad course. You're just not gonna lead there being like,
(08:55):
oh my gosh, the crowd support was amazing. Eh, it was,
oh my gosh. The co was so beautiful. Eh. It
was man like. It was just a very middle of
the road race. And I'm not ragging on him. I
hope you're not taking an offense if anyone from Louisville
is watching, which they're not. But no, I really enjoyed
the race. It just was okay. I did it don't
need to do it again. Got a half marathon in Kentucky.
(09:18):
Go Team, Go braw Brah Brah. We also did the
Flyover Challenge. Now I hope that you did the Flyover
Challenge as well. The reason I say that, and Mark,
if you're listening, talk to me. It might be the
only time it ever happened. So that was doing the
Top City Half Marathon into Peaka, Kansas on Saturday, and
(09:38):
then doing the Lincoln Nebraska the Marathon half marathon on Sunday.
Doing those races same weekend, back to back, and I
did that Top City Half Marathon Lincoln Half Marathon to Peaka, Kansas, Lincoln, Nebraska,
and it was a good time. We had an episode
last year we had both race directors on. We talked
about the fly Over Challenge. Had a great time. You
guys know, I love Mark and tops good times there.
(10:02):
I saw last week that Lincoln put out their email
for twenty twenty six. They didn't they didn't mention it.
They didn't mention the Flyover Challenge. That part of the
page is gone, so it may not be happening again,
which us means I'll probably just be doing Top City. Actually, well,
thanks being what it is, I might still be recovering
from knee surgery at that point. We're gonna see, We're
(10:23):
gonna see. But I do have the one Flyover Challenge
medal that was available. If it's the only one that
ever happens, well then I feel I have quite the
collector's item that would of course be covered in season
three of the podcast. Next, the one I keep trying
to put out of my head, the group Run from Hell,
because it is not a sanctioned race. It is something
(10:46):
that only I'm gonna say it because I'm one of them,
something only we idiots do, and only more idiots do
it multiple times looking at you, Michael Argo, first time
ever doing Summer Rgo. You can go back and listen
to that episode. It was over the summertime Go figure.
It was in July because it was really hot. The
(11:08):
most difficult half marathon I have ever done. There is
no question, there is no comparison, there is no debate,
There's no oh, what about this race or what about
this rice? Ha ha. No, Argo is the most difficult
half marathon I have ever done, will ever do. And
(11:29):
I feel like an absolute moron for saying it, but
I'm not one ruling out going back for Winter Argo.
I feel I gotta try them both. Now it's the
same course. They aim for what is statistically the hottest
day of the year, and then they aim for what
is statistically the coldest day of the year. You have
summer Argo, you have a winter Argo. I did summer.
(11:50):
They tell me summer is more difficult. Well, now I
almost want to see what winter is like. Almost we'll see.
And then of course we had the first ever running
of the Ottawa Half Marathon, of course put on by
Casey Running Company, brand new event this year. I enjoyed
it very much. It was a very nice half marathon
with a great start, a very beautiful start in front
(12:11):
of the Old Courthouse in Ottawa, running along Main Street,
and then nice nature trail out and back. But it
was the first time ever. I hope that race continues on.
I plan on doing it again. It was a very
enjoyable race. Last, but not least because I don't think
that I had mentioned this before I went and did
the El Dorado Half Marathon. If you remember that episode,
(12:34):
the weather was the biggest factor. The weather was awful
that day. We started with howling gustine winds. Four miles
in we picked up driving rain in this wind. The
temperature plummeted during the race, and I ended it in
my car in snow. That race was insane. But what's
(12:58):
more crazy about that race just announced maybe a month ago,
if even that, the race company Aws Events announced they're
no longer doing races. So the El Daredo Half Marathon
is now dead unless someone else takes it over, and
I haven't heard word of that happening, so I caught
it on its very last run. This also means if
you go back another year, hell on gravel, Hell on gravel.
(13:21):
Now that kept put because that race company is no
longer doing races. So I found that to be very fascinating.
If hell on gravel is something you had ever hoped
to achieve, you missed your opportunity. If you're thinking, well,
El Daredo sounded like such a fun race, I'm want
to go try it and see if I can go
out into the middle of the most miserable rain, wind hailstorm. Ever, Nope,
that opportunity has now gone as well as they have
(13:42):
folded up shop. So just something to keep in mind.
I thought it was very fascinating, interesting, thing, but that's
kind of where it's at. That was kind of it.
For the memorable races, we did eighty three episodes between
last year's Garment Kinsas City Marathon and this year's And
I'm not the only one who accomplished a milestone. The
one that I really want to shout out is Dan's
two hundredth half marathon that he hit in late spring.
(14:06):
I think it was still considered late spring early summer
at Hospital Hill when he crossed his two hundredth half
marathon finish line. Also our guy Jason, who got his
two hundredth race post heart surgery heart attack. I'm sorry,
I'm the heart surgery. He's the heart attack. Two hundred
races after a heart attack that almost sent him to
(14:27):
the afterlife, he has now got two hundred finish lines
under his belt as well. So Dan, Jason, it is
my pleasure to know you guys. You are inspirational runners.
I love every race I run into you, I love
every race that we do together. And I'm one hundred
percent going to call you out on this. Dan the Man.
A couple of weeks ago, when you posted that meme
and you said that at every race you're in a competition,
(14:51):
you're in a race with someone and they don't know it.
I know you're talking about me once or twice. Bubbah.
I know it because they're times you catch me right
at the end and I know in your mind you're like, oh,
there's Kyle. I got to make sure I beat him,
and you are becoming faster than me, my man. But
I know it, and you cannot lie that. There is
(15:12):
a time where you absolutely saw me, put me in
your crosshairs and said, I making sure I beat that
chump on my way to that finish line. Don't lie.
I know you have. I know you have. I saw that, man.
I was smiling ear to ear because I knew somewhere
in your running adventures, I was a part of that
man other accomplishments that we had, and there were a
(15:33):
ton you see I'm wearing the shirt. We launched a
second podcast here in this season. In this season three,
we launched a second wind episodes, which is how we
got up to eighty three episodes with only fifty one
weeks in a year. But now we're doing two a
week and we're having a blast. You know. We're doing
the series. We did the mental health series we did
Run the Nation, we did the March to two hundred,
(15:55):
we did Stress, and now we're in the middle of run.
If you dare, our Friday episodes are kind of becoming
series and I'm enjoying the heck out of it. I
hope you are too. If you're enjoying the series, please
let me know. But I think they're great. Other accomplishments,
all right, So we launched second win. We made the
Tokyo Marathon. That's one of the biggest things. Ever, how
I made it, I don't know. But our fifth World
(16:17):
Marathon Major is now within sight as we're about one
hundred and forty days away from it, and I'm doing
everything I can to get ready for it, everything except
running regularly. I'm still having a hard time getting back
out there. We've already been over that as well in
an earlier episode. When you get that kind of goal paralysis,
I one hundred percent will tell you right now I
am suffering from goal paralysis. It is very difficult. I
(16:41):
am hoping to record this, upload it, edit it, get
it ready to drop Friday, and then I plan on
going for a run, even if it's just two miles
two and a half Miles, I've got to do something.
But that goal paralysis is real. Go back and find
that episode if that's something that pertains to you when
you get that goal in front of you and you
just you freeze and you just can't start. I just
(17:02):
need to start. I mean I should have already been started.
I meant to start last week, but I just need
to start. So I'm telling myself that I just gotta start.
What else we got, We're going back to Mississippi. As
I said earlier, we are going to rectify the DNF
that is on my record where you're gonna take care
of that. We're gonna wipe that then clean. We're also
gonna meet Behind the Bib down there. There's gonna be
(17:23):
a joint podcast between the Run Your Story Podcast, Behind
the Bib in the Back of the Pack podcast. We're
gonna have this whole roundtable thing going. I'm super excited
for that. Look out for that here coming up in
season four of the Back of the Pack podcast. And then,
last but not least, you see the hat, we launched
our own run club, the Chasing Rabbits Run Club, that
we're doing every other Thursday from Discourse Brewery. We've done
(17:46):
it four times right now. We got one coming up
tomorrow night from when I'm recording this giveaway, when I'm
recording Woo. But I love it. I'm having so much fun.
I hope those who come out are enjoying it as
much as I am. I want everyone to come out
every other Thursday to Discourse Brewery and join us for
the Chasing Rabbits here on club. Why Like I've said,
(18:07):
and other run clubs say this, but they don't always
back it up. We've backed it up every time. You
will never be the last runner on the course ever.
Why Because I am I am the sweeper. I am
the last person who will come across every time. We're
never gonna do more than three miles. You're never gonna
be out there more than an hour. You're going to
(18:28):
get your run in, get your walk in. If you
want to turn off, we have a mile and a
half loop as well. Turn off, get a mile and
a half. But you're never the last one out there.
You're never left alone, You're never left in the dust.
We will always have someone out there. So Thursday this week,
when I'm at the Expo and I won't be there
for the start of the chasing rabbits. You're on club.
We already have a designated turtle. That is our designated sweeper.
(18:50):
So Bill shout out, Bud. He is going to make
sure that there is no runner left behind. You will
never ever be left behind. Guarantee it. Guarantee it. That
is our mission. That is the whole mission of this thing.
So I want to give some shout outs to people
who have helped make this season be what it be,
which I think has been a very successful one because
(19:11):
we've had all these victories that I'm telling you about.
And I'm not doing this just by myself, all right,
because you know, if it's all me, then nothing's getting done.
But of course Discourse Brewery, big shout out to them
for having this idea, for reaching out for us, talking
and agreeing and coming up with the way to do this.
So big shout out to Discourse Brewery for the run Club.
(19:31):
A shout out to running up that Hillary down in Texas.
She doesn't share every episode, she doesn't come in on everything,
but when she does, she always brings people to our door.
And there are times because she's a big time running influencer.
Don't ever say micro influencer. You're full of it. But
she brings people to us just by her mentions, because
she's got that kind of stroke and she's definitely done it.
(19:52):
She has been on the show before several times. I
want to thank her very much. Anytime she shows us love,
it brings people in and I think it's great. Of course,
the two ladies down in Saint Louis the Happy Pace podcast,
Gretchen and Elane love you guys. Love it that you
came up here for our anniversary episode back in March.
That was so much fun for the podcast three year anniversary.
(20:17):
I hope you guys can come up for the four
year anniversary. Same race, same bar, same all of it.
But again, just the fact you made the trip, you
made the effort, spoke volumes and it was so much
fun hanging out with you guys, and you're awesome. Next
behind the bib, Lisa, much love, Thank you very much
for your guest host spot this year. You bailed me
out when I needed a little help. I plan on
(20:37):
returning the favor. But she gives a shout out, so
she interacts on social media. She does all the things
that help keep this podcast going and making this successful.
And I try and return the favor with hers as well.
So remember behind the bib that is basically the back
of the Back podcast Southeast, So it is very much
this is very similar format. It just comes from a
(20:57):
woman's perspective and it's in the southeast Huntsville, Alabama, so
she can tell you all the races have gone down there.
And if you didn't see it, oh man, she blew
me out of the water this fall summer, late summer,
early fall, whatever did you guys? See? She got to
meet Laz Yeah, yeah, yeah, the psycho from the Barkley Marathon,
(21:18):
the one that we covered, you know, the guy who
his the way he starts the races by lighting his
cigarette and it's the most difficult ultra if you can
even call it an ultra. Ever, she got to meet
him this year, as her picture with him right there, like,
oh jelly, oh mad jealous on that one. So you
blew me out of the water this year, Lisa, Well done,
because that was huge that you hosted the night with
(21:40):
Laz and the guy who wrote his book with him.
That would have been super fun. If I had more
notice and maybe a little more vacation days left to work,
I'd have made that roadie just to go see that.
That would have been really cool. And then last but
not least, that Just Grow Something podcast. Karen, thank you
for all the times that you guest host for me.
You bring an l to this podcast that I cannot,
(22:02):
or that I could, but it wouldn't be it wouldn't
be genuine, Like I could read things off a screen
and I could regurgitate what I find. But you know
this stuff. You are the science person. You do it
so much better than I do. When you're talking sciencey
stuff and when you send me an episode and say here,
just use this one, it's beautiful. It's a beautiful thing.
And so I can't thank you enough for that. So
(22:23):
real quick, let's just go over the guests that we've
had here in this third season. See Will, I'm gonna
give you a hard time because you're like, oh, you
need to have this person on, that person on. You
act like no one ever comes on this show. I
said down and did this list. We had a ton
of people come on in this last year, which I
thought was great, so huge. Shout out to Mark from
Top City who came on to the race director from
(22:46):
the Lincoln Half Marathon. Let's see we had Michael Russell
from the Liberty Half Liberty is coming up. We had
Mark at Rendezvous Climbing Gym. Again. I feel sorry. I
suck at editing, so his episode wasn't great. That's my fault,
not his. Go to Rendezvous Climbing Jim. It is on
state line. You're gonna have a great time. And every
time I see them post something, it makes me smile
(23:06):
because I know they're doing well. So Rodney bout Climbing Jim,
make sure you go check them out. The Casey Cosplay
Runner came back. We love having Andrew Ron. He is
super fun. You've seen him at a race, So thank
you Andrew for coming on. Johnson County Parks and Reck
so JCPRD. They came on to talk about their kids
triathlon and their overall triathlon, so thank you to them
for coming on. Village Shalome came on and talked about
(23:27):
their building and their history and their event and their
five k ten k, which was a great time. I
ran the ten k, super fun, very well done. They
were very nice, lovely people, So thank youd Village Shalome.
Libby Davis from Keeping Clean for Coop for the fighting
fentanyl five k who again in year one, within the
first ten episodes we ever did. She was our very
(23:48):
first guest that ever came on the back of the
back podcast. So thank you Libby for coming back even
all these years later. Then of course Christina from Rexy Run.
We love our Rexy Run. Thank you to Christina. Thank
you to Rex Run. Still an event that we will
always promote and we will always try and get every
listener we can. Listeners the third August weekend, the third
(24:09):
Saturday in August. Let's put it in real terms, make
sure you're in Lawrence, Kansas for REXI Run. Trust me,
you're gonna hear all about it about the time we
flip over the calendar and we start aiming towards August,
so make sure you're there. Let's see Katie A Katie
our pacer buddy who mentioned earlier are Taylor Swift to
Cody's Travis Kelcey. She came on the podcast very recently,
(24:30):
told you about being an ambassador, told you about being
a pacer. We're gonna have her and Cody back as
they both did Berlin and Chicago. We're all gonna sit
down and do an episode together kind of talking about
world marathon majors, and just the experiences of Berlin and Chicago,
because now Cody's been in Berlin twice, so it was
better first time, second time, just learn things. Was it
(24:53):
easier to get around? We're gonna ask him all these
questions and then what Katie thinks about. Well, by the
time we sit down and talk to her, it might
be Berlin Chicago Marine Corps. So the key is we're
going to sit down because I don't know how much
standing she's going to want to do. After all of that, then,
of course we had the folks from Pink Gorilla and
that is the Good Life Havesie, So Pink Gorilla Events,
(25:15):
Good Life Hasnie, Chelsea, all of y'all. Thank you very
much for coming on again. Still my half marathon PR
will be back. Sadly, the team competition is over in
the Back of the Back podcast after last year's third
place finish, finished sixth place this year was slightly sad,
but that's okay. Still, thank you to everyone who joined
(25:38):
our team. I can't wait to see you all in
less than a month in Lincoln, Nebraska for Good Life Havesie.
It is a fun event. Then of course we've got
Dave Borcherd from the Kansa City Sports Commission. He has
come on. He is our longest tenured guest, He's made
