(00:16):
Hello, everyone, greetings and salutations. Welcome back to another episode of the
Back of the Pack podcast. I'myour host, Kyle Walker. Thank you
so much for tuning in. Sofirst things first, we got a few
more days, just a few moredays, and the lottery is still open
for a few more days. Afew more days. A few more days.
Are we getting the drift here?A few more days? Anyway,
We've got three more days until thelottery closes for the twenty twenty four TCS
(00:39):
New York City Marathon. If youwanted to get your name in, you
better do it now. Don't hesitate, run, don't walk, and get
yourself registered. Were recording. Hopefullyyou hear this on Monday, the eighteenth
of March. Yes, if youcan believe it, we are already halfway
through March. And then on thetwenty first March twenty first is when the
window closes for the New York CityMarathon ballots to be released in a week
(01:02):
week from Thursday on the twenty eighthof March. So already we are so
very close to figuring out who isgoing to New York and who is not.
Fingers crossed for everyone who has puttheir name in for this race again,
huge wonderful, amazing experience. Ihope we all get to go enjoy
in November. Oh my gosh,November. We're already talking about November races.
(01:26):
It's absolutely insane. Anyway, herethis weekend in Kansas City, just
one piddly little five k if youcan believe that, just one race that
was run this weekend. That wasthe Saint Patrick's Day five K. I
am conflicted with this race, andyou guys have heard me talk about this
before. Unfortunately, according to theofficial time of the race, I ran
(01:49):
a five kPr woo twenty nine minutesin twenty six seconds. Now, to
be fair, I knew I washoofing at that race. I was going
as fast as my little legs wouldcarry me. Reason being and people are
waiting for this. I took oneof the back of the packets out for
that race, my fourteen year oldback of the packet, the little soccer
(02:13):
star, the little athletic wonder thatshe is. Although she has not run
a race we determined in about ayear and a half, but she will
be the first to tell you thatshe owns the household record for best five
K time. Her best five Kwas somewhere in the range of twenty seven
minutes barah seconds, So she hasthe household record for the five k.
(02:36):
That's great. She also has itrun in a while, and her soccer
season is just now starting to rampup as she made one of her high
school soccer teams super great. Butshe does talk a lot of trash for
a person who's not run in awhile, and her father runs fairly frequently.
(02:59):
When we went to the race onSaturday, I wanted to demolish her.
I wanted to crush her. Iwanted to grind her up into little
bity fourteen year old powder and thengo and blow it off into the air
for it to be spread everywhere, because I wanted to destroy that child for
all the crap that she talks abouther poor father and the did and that
(03:22):
did. See. Unfortunately, runninga five k is not like riding a
bike. You can forget and youcan kind of lose the skill levels that
you might have once previously had,and you can get demolished by eleven minutes
by your twice open heart surgery operatedon old man. So fourteen year old
back of the packet daughter of mine, I whooped you I demolished you,
(03:46):
and I ran a pr Now thereason it's a problem with this race.
This race always measures short. SoI'm having a really hard time acknowledging this
as a new pr because my watch, Okay, I've got the Apple Plus
and I used to Strava on mywatch. It came in at like two
point ninety four, not the threepoint one to oh you want for a
(04:08):
five K. I came in atlike two point ninety four, maybe two
point ninety six now that I'm throwingout numbers anyway, measured really short.
A lot of people of the racealso measured short. A few people measured
accurate, but I think it mighthave been a little short either which way,
I demolished my fourteen year old.I got a new pr ish I
will at least recognize it as Hey. I ran a really good race.
(04:30):
Great to see a lot of thepeople out there, A lot of the
back of the pack, podcast fanswere there, and just local running community
people I know and love. Goodto see everybody out there. Nice little
morning. Took the rest of theweekend to kind of just chill axe for
years, truly, reason being thispast weekend with the five k was a
break. Now we get into themeat of the matter of spring running season.
(04:53):
I just want to go through, and I know we've done the twenty
twenty four preview. I'm just gonnago through like the next two months of
race. This is really just todetermine that I am actually insane. And
it's the things that I do foryou all. It's the things I do
for all you wonderful podcast listeners. And I want to be able to do
all the races and see all yoursmiling faces and tell you all about it
(05:15):
on the podcast. And I'm noposer. If I'm gonna talk about running
races, I'm gonna be out runningraces. And then I look at my
calendar and realize I may not makeit to this particular finish line, because
boy howdy, I I'm not abitting off a little bit more than we
could chew. Anyway, next weekwe'll be in Liberty, Missouri for the
Liberty Half Marathon. We've talked aboutthat, We've had them on the show.
(05:35):
Can't wait for the race. Havea booth out there. I'll be
at the expell I want to seeyou Friday before the race so you can
get your packet you can get theLiberty stuff and then you can drop by
the back of the pack podcast table. We will see you Friday, the
twenty second of March, and we'llsee you there. Yes, see you
at the table. Then we're gonnarun Liberty half Saturday morning. After that,
(05:58):
I'm gonna take things down a littlebit in a ten k on Easter
weekend. Again, we only canrun on Saturday. No running races on
Easter Sunday, So the Easter Eggten k we will be at that.
After that, Rock the Parkway soeveryone here in Kansas City knows Rock the
Parkway is one of our biggest halfmarathons of the year. It has the
most people normally around five thousand andhalf marathon participants and then whatever shows up
(06:19):
for the five k, and itis it is kind of one of the
big ones here around town. Thatis the first race in the Heartland thirty
nine point three series, which isthree half marathons over the course of two
months. Okay, so one thatwe're mostly familiar with. So that is
where we're at now. We're athalf marathon, ten k, half marathon.
After Rock the Parkway, I'm onthe road, so hopefully we'll see
(06:44):
some of you good folks in SouthCarolina. So the podcast is heading to
South Carolina for the Too Slow forBoston Marathon. I can't wait. That
is going to be on Sunday,April fourteenth, the Too Slow for Boston
Half Marathon. I'm sorry, fullmarathon, full marathon in Greer, South
Carolina. So I am going tothere. I am super excited. Again.
(07:05):
This is the race where there isno time limit. They want runners
of any and all skill levels tocome complete a full marathon. Again,
no time limit. So if youthink it would take you more than eight
hours to walk a full marathon, this is your race. The winner of
the race is the last place finisher. That is who wins the prize money.
(07:26):
Now they have it. They haveit set up so that people cannot
abuse this system. I love thebeauty of this system. Someone who may
will never, may will never wordswords are awesome. Someone who may never
get a full marathon, even ifthey went to Little Rock with the tent,
with the eight hours and the twohour head start, even if that
is not achievable, They have thetwo Slow for Boston Marathon where they will
(07:48):
not shut it down until everybody isdone. I love it. I am
in for it, so I amgoing for the full marathon. I'm gonna
go, I'm gonna run in.This is where a lot of people are
like whoa, and even myself inmy head, I'm like, whoa,
this is nuts. It's only aone point three mile loop, and you
just do it over and over andover again until you get your the people
(08:13):
who are doing the half marathon, until you get your thirteen point one for
the fall the twenty six point two. They said it's about twenty laps.
You do about twenty laps of thisone point three equals out to the twenty
six point two roughly. They definitelytell you go buy what your watch is
saying, and you just around andaround you go. While I can see
(08:33):
this could end up being kind ofa boring thing, like you could get
bored. I'm excited though, becausethere's always there's always support, Like I'm
gonna go and set up a chairand a cooler and have like basically my
own little table right there. Youcan kind of have your own self support.
So on the next lap around,if I need something, I got
my stuff right there. Another laparound, got something right there. I
(08:54):
hope to find people to talk to. I hope to meet a lot of
folks. I'm in no hurry. This is not gonna be a pr because
who cares if I take seven hours? I don't care. Again, my
best marathon ever is five point fortyfive ish. I'll take seven. It
doesn't matter. We're out there forthe experience on this one. Yes we
will get a full marathon. Yeswe'll be credited with having South Carolina complete
(09:16):
it, and that's all super great. But I'm going just for the experience
of this. I've exchanged messages oversocial media with these folks a little bit.
They all seem like super great people. They're really they just they really
kind of get this. They getthe whole idea of a back of the
pack and just the people who wantto finish and say they've done something,
even though they may not beat themost elite level. I love it.
(09:37):
I'm here for it. I can'twait to go. So Okay, half
marathon, ten K, half marathon, full marathon. We come back for
race number two in the Heartland thirtynine point three series, which is the
garment Land of OZ half marathon. So even a lot of people, as
I found, who are not veryfamiliar with the Kansas City running area.
A lot of them have heard ofthis race. Because if you want all
(10:00):
fifty states, you have to doa marathon in Kansas. A lot of
people have chosen the garment Land ofOz Full Marathon as their Kansas Marathon.
Cool. I'll be doing the halfmarathon to continue on with the thirty nine
point three series. Always a funevent. A lot of Wizard of Oz
themed dress up in that because itis the Land of Oz Marathon. So
(10:20):
that's super fun. Second race inthe series, and that's going to be
six days after full marathon. We'llsee if my knees can make it.
Here's hoping after that. Okay, here we go. We're keeping track again.
Half marathon, ten k half fullhalf. Then we move on to
the Top City Half Marathon in toePeaka, Kansas. They've been on the
(10:41):
podcast before, good friends of theshow. Can't wait to go down into
Top City. Beautiful race. Lovethat race. Had such a wonderful time
with it last year. Can't waitto do it again this year. Their
medals are great, the weather wasgreat, the course was beautiful. It's
a really fun race. Not themost difficult half marathon you've ever done,
a lot of nice little death foryou. So we've got Top City.
(11:01):
The day after Top City is oneI've told you about before. This is
the get your rear in gear fivek. So yes, going back to
back half marathon five k. Doingthis for a friend who we lost to
colon cancer, and with all thetalk in the Kings City running community of
people who have had to fight cancer, no brainer for me to make it
out and do this race. Yeah. Will I be fast? Probably not.
(11:24):
It's a day after a half marathon, and it comes after all these
other races I've done. I imaginethe legs will be pretty tired, but
we're gonna go and we're gonna getthat race done anyway, on April twenty
eighth up by the airport here inKansas City, up in Zona, Rosa.
So that's a good one there. So all right, half marathon,
let's say, half marathon ten k, half marathon, full marathon, half
marathon, half marathon five k nextweekend, the first one in May,
(11:48):
the Lincoln Half Marathon up in Lincoln, Nebraska, is where the podcast will
be heading next. Doing this sothat we can do what they call the
Capital City Challenge. If you haven'theard of this. The Capital City Challenge
is two races. Is in Lincoln, Nebraska. It is the Lincoln Half
Marathon in May. It is theGood Life Havesy in the Fall, which
is October twenty seventh up in Lincoln, Nebraska. You do both of those,
(12:09):
you get a nice big Capital Citymedal. It actually is a really
cool looking metal. I ran theGood Life Havesa last year. I saw
a lot of people walking around withall these metals, and I only had
my one for the Good Life haveSa. I was saying, man,
how do I get these other medals? I want these other medals because I
like medals. This is how youdo it. You do both races.
Lincoln, Good Life done. Thatis your Capital City. After that,
(12:31):
then we have the Running with theCows half marathon. If you are outside
of the Kansas City area, youhave not experienced Running with the Cows.
Running with the Cows is a racethat takes place in Bucyrus, Kansas,
which even for us here in KansasCity, Bucyrus is getting close to the
middle of nowhere. Not a baddrive though. They have a half marathon
(12:52):
and they have a five k.The thing that always happens with the Cows
Every time. We always will havea cold snap like the week or two
leading up to it, but theweek of the Cows, we could have
a frost advisory Tuesday morning, andthen we're gonna hit ninety degree heat index
on the day of that race. That is the race where you've never had
(13:15):
a chance to train in the heatbefore the heat arrives. It's just always,
bam, there's the heat on theday of Running with the Cows,
and bam there's runners dropping like fliesbecause it is so hot and so humid.
And that course is out in theprairie, out in the farm lands,
not a lot of shade, actuallyknows shade for about the last half
of that race. It gets usevery year. So if you ever want
(13:39):
to know when the heat is goingto officially hit Kansas City, look up
Running with the Cows half marathon andjust know that it's going to be that
week. All right, So herewere going in half marathon, ten k,
half marathon, full marathon, halfmarathon, half marathon, five K
half marathon, half marathon. ThenI'm gonna take a week off, so
the midweek in May, I actuallyhave a weekend off kat out of the
(14:01):
bag. I am going to geta running coach certification that weekend, so
I am in class all that weekend. I just thought it would be something
that could help. Maybe we'll findsome stuff to talk about on the podcast.
With it, I can give youguys a little more guided inputs if
anyone has any questions. I'm doingthis for me because I think it will
be cool, and that's why I'mgoing to do it. So mid May,
(14:22):
I'm unavailable that weekend because I willbe getting a running coach certification that
weekend. So after the weekend off, then it is Memorial Day weekend.
We go to Manhattan, Kansas fora second year in the row of doing
the Bill Snyder Memorial Highway Half Marathonor no, just Bill Snyder Highway Half
Marathon. Sorry, not Memorial.Bill's fine, He's fine. That's my
fault. I misspoke Bill's School. So that is a fun race in Manhattan,
(14:48):
Kansas. Great half marathon. Itis still my pr for a half
marathon. I got it last year. It's a there's definitely some hill aspect
to it, but I think therewas a lot more downhill than uphill.
And then you actually run through thecampus of k State University. So if
you're a KSE State fan at all, that was really cool. And then
you will finish inside the gigantor footballstadium that k State plays their football games
(15:11):
in. So it was a reallycool experience. Glad I did it.
And even though like an idiot lastyear, I'm jogging along and there's this
big statue of Bill Snyder in frontof the stadium, and again the finish
line is just right around the corner. I wanted to stop and get a
picture taken with the statue, notrealizing how close I was to a PR.
So once I looked down and realizedthat after the picture, man,
(15:31):
I just dead sprinted to the finishline and I was able to make a
PR. It was closer than itshould have been, but that's my fault
because I've stopped to take a picture. Stop to smell the roses, if
you will. After Bill Snyder wego up to Fargo, Fargo, North
Dakota for the Fargo Full Marathon. There's a whole group of Kansas Citians that
are heading up there. I hopewe can meet a lot of you listeners
(15:54):
in Fargo. Yeah, Fargo,North Dakota. It is going to be
a really fun trip. I'm lookingforward to it. I've heard the course
is pretty beautiful, very flat.I'm good with that. So we're gonna
get a full marathon taking care ofup in Fargo, and it should be
a really fun time. Excited forthat, just road tripping up and road
tripping back. It doesn't sound likeit's too bad of a drive either,
(16:15):
so that's always good. Any chanceI can save some money. After that,
we come back and we are instill the early stages of June.
Another weekend off. Missus Back ofthe Pack podcast told me that like the
second weekend in June, I can'trun a race. She already has plans
for us for something or another,so okay. Then after that we had
the Clinton Historic Half Marathon in Clinton, Missouri. And after that, which
(16:38):
is June fifteenth, that kind ofwraps up the spring running season, and
one last time half marathon, tenK half marathon, marathon, half marathon,
half marathon, five K half marathon, half marathon, half marathon,
full marathon, half marathon. I'mridiculous the things I do. Things I
(17:00):
do, So I wanted to usethis as just a way to kind of
bring this up because I'm not theonly person affected by this. I wanted
to look and see really how muchrunning is too much running? And I
found this article. This is doneby marathonhandbook dot com and it was interesting
and there's a lot of aspects toit. But the one that I really
(17:21):
wanted to hit on as my pagereset, which it always did, they
gave you these fourteen warning signs thatyou're running too much. I actually found
them kind of interesting. I wasnot aware of some of these. So
these are fourteen signs that you wererunning too much? And again, I
think this can really count for everything, whether it be your overtraining, you're
(17:42):
over racing, which certainly sounds likethat could be an issue coming up for
me pretty soon. So I've wantedto kind of see what these signs were.
But if you experience any of these, and again, everyone's different,
every situation is different. This isnot gospel. This is simply what someone
wrote and I found interesting. I'mgonna share with you, but things to
keep an eye on. Just keepan eye on them, just in case
(18:03):
you're overrunning. So how much yourrunning is too running? Here are fourteen
signs. Number one, you aren'thungry. Okay, I guess if you're
running too much, you can affectyour system, it affects your hunger.
I certainly do not have that issue. I can guarantee you that is not
a problem right now. I feellike I'm eating constantly right now, also
been doing a lot of running,So I think right now for me,
fair balance, y'all. If you'relosing appetite, check and see if you
(18:26):
maybe are overrunning. Number two.Never would have thought of this low sex
drive. Okay, makes sense. If you're overrunning, you just may not
have the energy, like honestly, you may not just have that drive you
know, to perform in that manner, shall we say, because you're spending
all your energy somewhere else. Numberthree, your performance is declining or plateauing
(18:52):
despite training hard. Now, Ithink we've all done this before. We've
all plateaued somewhere, and so ifyou're plateauing or even declining even while upping,
maybe you're you're running, but yetyour times are going down or your
distances decreasing, you might be overdoingit. So it's definitely worth looking at
again. If you have a runningcoach, consult your running coach. If
you have a running plan, consultyour plan. Maybe you're just getting a
(19:15):
little too gung home with your milesand you need to dial it back a
little bit. We've all been guiltyof this. We've all thought, oh,
man, I you know, I'vegot this race coming up, and
I was late starting my training,so I'm gonna overcram for it. Now,
that doesn't always work. We're allguilty of it, but it doesn't
always work. So you just keepthat in mind. You're unusually fatigued,
(19:36):
is number four. That's kind ofa no brainer. Yeah, that's definitely
can be a problem. Number five, you feel sluggish in workouts. Again,
this can be overtraining. This alsocould be a lot of factors.
I think feeling kind of sluggish couldbe your diet. Your diet could be
a little off. It could bethe weather. You could be affected by
seasonal allergies. You could be affectedby a change in barometer. You could
(19:56):
be affected by really changing season. If you're feeling sluggish and you've been training
in cooler weather and now suddenly it'shot, Okay, well clearly that's not
overtraining. That can be weather.Man Like, it's hot outside, So
cut yourself a break there. Justkind of know yourself, know your body.
Next one, number six, you'rehaving a tough time sleeping. Okay,
(20:18):
I can't speak to this because I'mnot a good sleeper. Never happened
even before I took up running.I'm not a good sleeper. I'm lucky
for six hours a night. That'skind of what I live off of.
Six hours of sleep and a wholebunch of coffee. That's my world.
But if you're a big time sleeperand then you're exercising on the regular and
maybe you're overrunning and you're not sleeping, and that's abnormal for you, take
a look right next up, numberseven. You aren't feeling recovered before your
(20:42):
next run. This one, sorry, I sniffed into my microphone here,
this one do we ever? Andthis one? I don't know this one.
You're really gonna have to kind oflook at yourself on this one.
But you aren't feeling recovered before yournext run. My dear friend who wrote
this article been felt recovered in years. You know, we as runners pride
(21:03):
ourselves in our stubbornness and our abilityof just get out there and get it
done. Yeah, we're not alwaysgoing to feel like a million bucks while
we do it, but we doit because it's what we do. Take
that one for what it's worth.Next one, let's see you're irritable.
Why do you think I'm irritable.I'm not irritable. Why would you say?
Okay? Now if you're irritable again, this goes along with it.
(21:26):
This also can associate with the restproblems. So take a look at your
rest take a look at your overtraining, and see where you're at. Number
nine, This one is interesting.Your resting heart rate is elevated by three
to five beats more than usual. So resting heart rate is not something I
feel comfortable enough really diving into.I even despite all my heart issues in
(21:48):
life, and I'm not qualified.I'm not qualified to talk about resting heart
rate. Runners have a lower restingheart rate than is normal for the rest
of the people. That much Ido know. So take a look.
If you are wearing a wearable devicekind of a thing that tracks your heart
rate, if you suddenly see thatpatterns are changing, then it's worth looking
into. We'll leave it at that, leave it to your discretion. But
(22:12):
that was something they list here.I find that kind of interesting. My
resting heart rate is consistent when I'mresting isn't that much? Next one,
you're getting sick frequently. Okay, this is a sign that your body is
just being overused and can't fight thingsthe way it's supposed to be fought because
you're putting a lot of stress andstrain on the body. This one not
new, not different. We're awareof this. But if you're getting sick
(22:33):
more often, it could be overtraining. Next one, you're getting injured frequently.
Yeah, overuse, got it.After that, you have aches and
pains. Okay, come on now, I'm forty four years old, y'all.
I couldn't tell you the last timesomething didn't hurt. I'm of the
age things hurt. So again, you're gonna have to process this one yourself.
(22:56):
Know yourself, know where you're atin your journey. I'm sure there
are runners who run pain free, and after they're done with the run,
nothing ever hurts. Ever, Idon't have a right knee anymore. In
my hips hurt, and every timeI stand up, I look like an
old man. But I'll still beat the start line this weekend. So
again, another one, know thyself. Next one to only two more left.
(23:21):
You feel unmotivated or burnt out ontraining. Okay, that's a big
one, and this is one we'vedefinitely touched on before. You can get
burned out on running. Okay, not everyone is the insane people that listen
to this podcast who kind of live, breathe and die running. That's that's
not everyone. So a lot ofpeople do get burnout while they're running.
(23:44):
And again, if you are startingto feel burned out, if you are
dreading your training run or dreading arace, again, we all live for
race day. If you're like, ugh, I really don't want to go
to that race. You know thishurts, or I'm tired or I'm not
sleeping, well, okay, we'llsee this kind of connects with all the
things they're talking talking about, Sobe really careful. And we've done episodes
before on burnout, so I'm notgonna regurgitate all that. But burnout is
(24:06):
a real thing. It absolutely happensif you're starting to feel burnt out on
running or maybe you don't want tolisten to this podcast anymore, And really,
who could think that. You know, I don't want to talk about
running. I don't want to hearabout the cool races. I don't want
to talk about metals. I don'twant to do training rounds. I don't
want to drive to the start line. If any of that is in your
head, you're burned out, takesome time off you just listen to the
(24:29):
podcast, don't do all the otherstuff. I mean no, just get
away from the sport entirely for aminute, whatever you need, until you're
feeling like, Okay, I'm rested, I'm rejuvenated, I'm excited to go
to the race again. So yeah, burn out real thing. Take it
seriously if you're starting to get it, like, no, no jokes there,
all joking aside. Burnout's real.Watch yourself there, last one.
If you're having a hard time focusingagain, that goes along with everything else.
(24:55):
Focus it's a sign of burnout. It's a sign of overusing your body,
over use in your mind. Runningis also mentally taxing. We know
this, Okay, running is mentallytaxing. What do we say about full
marathons? Yes, there is abig physical aspect of it. There is
also, I would argue a biggermental aspect to a full marathon. Then
(25:15):
there is physical. You have toknow you're going to be out there for
hours and hours and hours. Youhave to know there's going to be parts
of that race, especially after halfmarathon, are split off where you are
all by your damn self and theremay not be people cheering you on,
and the crowd support may have dwindled, and you may be on a boring
road, or the sun might begoing down, or any number of things.
(25:38):
The mental toll running can take isjust as important as the physical toll.
And again it goes along with everythingthat we talked about, the burnout,
the fatigue, the overuse, allthat good stuff. You got to
keep your mind right and do it. However, you need to listening to
podcasts, talking to friends, researchingraces, coming up with your dream list,
(25:59):
do the fun mental parts of thiswhole sport so that you can make
it through the not so fun parts, the parts where you're running by yourself,
or you're doing a training run earlyin the morning and there's nobody up
and you have to be out thereby yourself. The rest of your family's
still in bed sleeping. It's gettinghot outside, and so you know you're
gonna have to be on the heatI hate the heat, or it's gonna
(26:19):
be so cold, whatever it is. Really be mindful of the mental aspect
of running in the mental part ofoveruse, because every time you go off
a run, you got to useyour head as much as you got to
use your legs. So just beaware it all is part and parcel.
It's all one and the same.Okay. So that's the that's the tips
for overuse. The article was reallygood. There was a lot of long
(26:41):
there's longer parts to it. Ididn't want to go through all of it,
but it was a very interesting articleon overuse. So look it up
if you feel that you might besuffering from it. If you ever want
