This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast: Second Wind, we’re celebrating the voices that have helped our pack grow. Over the years, our guests have brought stories, energy, and whole new communities into the fold — each one leaving their own unique mark. Some inspired listeners to take on new races, others sparked donations or volunteer work, and many became ongoing friends of the show. We revisit some of the most memorable conversations, laugh about moments that still make us smile, and reflect on how these voices helped shape the Back of the Pack into what it is today. Whether they joined us to share training tips, talk about a cause close to their heart, or simply swap race-day stories, they’ve all played a part in growing this community. This episode is a love letter to everyone who’s run alongside us — on the mic, on the course, and in spirit — as we keep moving toward episode 200.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Hello, everyone, greetings and salutations. Welcome back to another episode
of the Back of the Back podcast Second Win. I'm
your host, Kywalker. Thank you so much for tuning in. Yes,
this episode is coming out ridiculously late. I do apologize,
had a lot of other things going on and so
I was not able to get to this when I
normally do, and so we're late coming out here on
this Friday. I do apologize. I hope your Friday has

(00:32):
gone okay without me speaking these wonderful tones into your ears.
We'll go with that. So anyway, we are on this series,
this episode, this podcast, whatever I'm trying to say, Second Went.
We are on our march to our two hundredth episode
of the Back of the Back podcast, whether it be
the original episode or the Second Wind episodes, all episodes combined,

(00:54):
we are almost a two hundred multual air on Friday,
August twenty second. So last week we kind of down
some of the history of the podcast and like how
we got started and just some fun little tidbits. This week,
I really wanted to take a chance, not a chance,
I want to take the opportunity to think so many
people you know, it's not this is not just a

(01:15):
me thing. It never has been and never will be,
and I don't want it to be because less of me,
more of you is always a good thing. So just
like when you're running a race and you had that
running buddy or you meet that person during the race
and you guys are running together, this podcast would not
be what it is without the people who have come
and run alongside with me. So this week, I want
to really think those those who have come on, those

(01:37):
who have contributed, those who have helped, who have been guests,
who have guest hosted, and really just say thank you
to all of them. So really, what I'm gonna do
is I want to go down to all the people
who have appeared on this show. And I went through
all the episodes and I think I found everyone who's appeared.
If I happen to miss someone, a let me know,
be I apologize profusely. I don't want to miss anyone

(01:58):
because we've had some amazing people and amazing organizations on
this podcast, and I just want to show them love
one more time because some of them even surprised me.
It's like, oh yeah, I remember when we had them on,
and so that's actually kind of cool. A little trip
down memory Lane is what I've been working on. One
of the reasons why the podcast is like coming out.

(02:19):
But yeah, when you have other people on the show man,
it brings a new energy. You know, you'd also get
you out to new audiences, and then it gives you
new perspective because I am definitely not right all the time.
So I want to start right now with the guests
who have let's just say inspired action and awareness, a
lot of awareness. And the first people I'm going to
bring up right now off the top, the two that

(02:40):
I love and the cause that I am so passionate about,
as you guys know, because I talk about this race
at nauseum. But we have Erica and Christina, you guys
get the first shout out. So they are from Baby
Jay's Legacy of Hope and they do Rexy Run. Rexy
Run is next week. So next week, in August sixteenth,
is Rexy Run in Lawrence, Kansas. If you have not
signed up yet, you still have time, get signed up.

(03:04):
I want to see you. This is their tenth year.
It's the tenth REXI Run, and I want everyone to
be there so they help with families whose kids are
going through cancer. Treatments, all right, and so they help
with food and just the things that are needed while
families have to up in their entire lives to help
their child and loved one. This dealing with cancer. So

(03:27):
I love Baby Jay's Legacy of Hope. Erica and Christina
are my absolute favorites. Ellen shout out to you as well,
and Rexy run coming up. So their number one right
after them is a very similar organization that came on
within our first year. So again, all the people who
kind of came on on that first year, they I
kind of give them the credit, you know, they took
a chance, like they didn't have to invest their time

(03:49):
and energy into my Rinky Dink lovel podcast, but they did,
and so I'm very thankful. So my guy William and
then Delease they came on for Braden's Hope for Childhood
Cancer again, another organization dealing with cancer in children. And
we've talked about before, but never forget four percent of
the funding out there, four percent of cancer research funding

(04:13):
goes towards children's cancer. Four percent ridiculous, ridiculous. But William
and Delie came on and they were one of the
first ones to come on and take a chance on
this podcast. So a big thanks to them and for
Braden's hope. They are doing great things. They don't do
a race anymore. They did have a race for quite
a few years. They don't race anymore, but they do
other fundraisers around town and you can always always find

(04:34):
ways to help them out, and I think that you should.
You might remember we worked with a lady in Crystal,
but that was for Saint Jude. Okay, so Saint Jude's
Children's Research Hospital. You guys are I'm sure picking up
on the theme here on the people that we really
try and work with and help because f cancer and
especially F cancer and children. But she came on. They

(04:54):
were the charity partner of our race. If you remember,
back in twenty twenty two, we did the Casey Hustle Run.
It was kind of under the old regime of this podcast.
The old production company was, you know, partnering, and well
we all did that race together. That was like the
beginning of the end doing that race together. But we
had the Casey Hustle Run and all the proceeds that
we were able to raise, and I know it wasn't much,

(05:15):
and you know, all three of us who were involved.
We did the best we could, and yeah, things being
what they are, everyone tried their best. We wanted to
raise millions and noodles of dollars for Saint Jud's but
we didn't, but we gave what we could. They were
the official charity partner the Casey Hustle Run. Yes, someday
I definitely want to do a race again. I want
like the back of the Back podcast five K ten K,

(05:38):
and I imagine that one of these charities that I
just talked about will be the beneficiary of that race.
So someday I'm hoping fingers crossed. And then of course
we have She was the first person that ever came
on the show. Our first guest ever was just on.
Very recently. Again we have Libby Davis from Keeping Clean
for Coop in the fighting fentanyl five K. Again A

(05:59):
it's not child poo cancer, like I get that, but
another hugely important cause because like kids are dying right
now from these fentanyl pills and these the just the
opiates and all that stuff. It's it's it's really scary
out there, y'all, Like it's real scary. So please talk
to your kids, go point them over to the keeping

(06:21):
clean for Coop and the Cooper Davis Memorial Foundation, the
Fighting Fannel five K. They will learn a ton and
it's I like their approach, Like it's not the browbeating,
not that dogs are bad, don't do this, It's like, no, man, look,
you gotta be smart, you gotta be careful. You can't
just assume anymore. And you know what happens when you
assume exactly. So those are just some of the charities

(06:43):
and you know, kind of the again, action and awareness
is how I had this this down, but some of
the really important causes and the people that we've had
on around that. So now let's talk about the people
we've had on for fun, you know, whether they had
a specialty that they wanted to share with us, or
they do something really fun and enjoy And of course
you can't talk fun and enjoyable without kicking off our

(07:04):
buddy Andrew, the Casey cosplay runner. Andrew's been on the
show twice. He raises money for charity by wearing different
costumes every race, and again, the times he's repeated costumes
is very small, and they're normally custom made or bought
or whatever, but he is always wearing some crazy costume
at all these races, and I swear I've seen that

(07:26):
guy about die out there from wearing a heavy costume
on a super hot day or something. But he is
dedicated to the cause. Always fun. Always. I smile whenever
I see someone walk up to him, like can I
take your picture? Because I know he loves that stuff
and it's great people love his outfits. So there we go.
I want to thank Andrew, the Casey costplayrunner, who has
come on the show twice a lot of fun every time.

(07:46):
If you remember another one in our first year and
I can't give you any more information. He was booked
for lack of a better term, through our former production
company and was a friend of the former producer. But
you guys remember Pete. We had training tips with Pete
only ever came on the podcast twice, but a certified
personal trainer who now lives in Florida. I do believe

(08:06):
who game is just good personal training insights. I know
we talked an episode about kind of nutrition around the
holidays and what that does to your body, and then
I think we did one of more like a recovery
after long runs kind of thing. But Pete was a
great guy. I'm sure he still is a great guy.
Whatever he's doing in Florida, I hope he's doing well.
But wanted to shout out to Pete who's been on
the show before. He was on twice. We've had our buddy,

(08:29):
your friend and mine. Of course Cody, he gets a
shout out here as well. Cody has been on the podcast.
One of the goofiest episodes we ever did was Cody
and I writing back from Texas where we had just
done half marathon that morning. So we ran the half marathon,
got to the hotel, showered up, you know, got lunch,
and then we hit the road to drive back to
Kansas City from Midland, Texas. Long drive and so you

(08:52):
had two half goofy runners trying to record an episode
in the car. It was ridiculous and we were but
it was super fun. And Cody has been on before.
He came on. I think with Will and we talked.
I think we were talking to Hell on Gravel half
marathon last year. I believe they came on for that.
The Oh, that's right, we've had Cody on before. Cody

(09:13):
is a fan favorite show, we say both at the
races and on the podcast. So shout out to Cody.
We have Allison. Shout out to Allison, who came on
the episode and talked about her experiences after her very
first full marathon. We did the Saint Jude Memphis Marathon.
We both were there at the same time in twenty
twenty three, and so we had her on the podcast
so she could just kind of talk about what it's

(09:34):
like doing your first full marathon, because for me it
was way back in twenty eleven, her experience far more recent.
Now she's just gone crazy. She's doing foals left, right,
and center. Now one is nothing. Next we have, Oh,
we had had on several times, the Grand Poobah, the
Master of Ceremonies, the man the met, the legend, Brad
from the Kansas Kansas City Running Company. Kansas City Running

(09:57):
Company puts on most of the running events here in town,
at least most of the good ones, and so he
has been on before to talk about races coming up.
I remember we did a segment one time. I don't
remember how we got on it where we talked about
races that had gone by the wayside, you know, ones
that maybe ran a year or two and then you know,
just kind of folded up shop and it was funny
going down memory lane with Brad on that one, because

(10:19):
again I will never forget the boots and Daisy dukes
five K. It's ridiculous. No, I didn't wear Daisy Dukes,
but I thought about it, but I didn't do it.
And then we have again random. I know he's not
even in the area anymore, and he's not even an
associated with the race anymore, but I'm gonna give him
a shout out anyway. Chris Cornell from the Westport Santa
Dash talked to him a few times. He actually approached

(10:41):
me about coming on the podcast about two years ago.
Super nice guy. I had a blast talking to him.
I know that he's not with the race anymore because
he moved out out of the area, out of state
with his now wife. I think so good on him.
But Chris, shout out to you wherever you're at. That
was a fun conversation we had about Westport. All right.
So next we have kind of the let's just say,

(11:02):
more of the reach, more of the working with other organizations.
A lot of race directors are on this list, so
I want to give them all the shout out. My
man Mark Mark Price from the Top City Half Marathon
in Topeak of Kansas always runs at the end of
April or beginning of May, whenever it fits into the schedule.
We just did it this last year. I think we've

(11:22):
done it three years in row, two years in a row.
Three I think three. No, I think I missed it
in between because that little thing called the Boston Marathon. Anyway,
I've done it two out of the last three years.
I played on being back next year. And remember we
did the Flyover Challenge this year where we had Mark
from Top City on and then we had the race
director Ryan from the Lincoln Half Marathon and Full Marathon

(11:44):
and we talked about the Flyover Challenge. So Mark has
been on several times talking about Top City. We talked
about the Flyover Challenge, and then we had Ryan on
to talk about the Lincoln Half Marathon as well. So
super fun. Our old friend not old, she is not old,
old is in. We've worked together for a few year
years now. She still young. Julie from the Liberty Half.

(12:05):
My mind is blank. And Julie from Liberty Half. She
wasn't with us the last year because she was out
on maternity leave, so her family grew a little bit,
and I see on social media they're doing fantastic, so
that's great. But I bet we see Julie again this
year as we get ready for the new, revamped, rebranded,
repackaged Liberty Half coming up in March. I'm already registered

(12:26):
for it. I'll be there the Hills Man, the Hills
of Liberty. We just keep coming back for more, don't we.
But I'm sure Julie will be back as well. We
have Dave Dave from the Garmin Kinsidney Marathon, one of
our favorite guests. Everyone loves a Dave episode. I actually
need to email them probably when I get done recording
this episode. Got to get Dave back on for this year.

(12:46):
We got to talk everything Garmen Kansas Citney Marathon coming
up in October, and then Dave also part of the
Casey Sports Commission. We'll talk to us about what's going
on with the FIFA World Cup that's coming to town,
and then just any other Kansas City sports stuff because
Dave is in no and big shout out to Dave.
I saw in the Kans City Comments Celebrity game Dave

(13:07):
scored a goal, So nice man. Little indoor soccer action
for you. I love it. It was a great kick too, man.
That was beautiful. That was beautiful. Love it, So shout
out to Dave. Then we have our running Influencer extraordinaire
running up that Hillary. So, Hillary from Deep in the
Heart of Texas has been on several times. We met
in Las Vegas, recorded an episode in a busy hotel

(13:29):
bar in Las Vegas. That was the first time we
talked to Hillary. She's been on to talk about other
things on the podcast, and I'll just get it out
there right now. I have now made an appearance on
her podcast. So This Day in Running History with Hillary,
you guys can find it. We've shared it before. But yeah,
I hope I'm saying that name right. If not, she's
gonna kick my button. I don't blame her. But yeah,

(13:50):
This Day in Running History with Hillary, the August eleventh
episode will feature Ama. So we are talking the nineteen
eighty four Olympics with Carl Lewis and his four gold medals.
So it was fun. I had another freaking audio problem
I'm fearful of. After we got done recording, I saw
that my one of my jacks had broken, like oh no,
so I'd probably sound my crap again and I'm so

(14:11):
sorry to her for that, but I love working with
Hillary Hillary again the big Instagram running influencer, celebrity, Brooks
athletes extraordinaire. So thank you to Hillary for all her appearances.
And I'm sure they're not done yet unless I tick
her off and then they might be done. But my
microphone did that to me. Anyway. We have Michael Russell,
another guy, Michael from the Liberty Half. He came on

(14:33):
while Julie was on maternity leave. Had so much fun
talking to him everything Liberty. I am sure I will
see him again this year as we will work the
expo and run the race again. But a shout out
to him. And then we also have can't forget Wait
a minute, did they You did not skip this little
Oh no, I'm not gonna let you get away with that.
Don't forget that. We have Lisa from the Behind the

(14:54):
Big podcast who has come on and co host I'm sorry,
special guest hosted for us before. We have Lisa from
Behind the BIB. We have Gretchen and a Lane from
the Happy Pace podcast. All other podcasts again that, in
no world do I consider them competitors. They are my
partners in this running podcast world. Hillary as well now
that hers is launch. But we're all podcast running partners,

(15:17):
and I love having them on. I love it when
they take over one of my episodes because again, it
just brings that new perspective, those new thoughts. Lisa talked
to everything about a lot of Southeast running, as she's
based out of Huntsville, Alabama. And then of course Happy
paces over in Saint Louis, so they're talking Saint Louis stuff,
and they were talking to a guy about Grandma's marathon
into luth Minnesota. So you get all these great new

(15:38):
things when you get guest hosts to take over your show.
I love it, So don't worry. I plan on having
all of them back to guest host again at some
point in time, so don't even sweat that. Some more
guests that I want to thank. Remember we did the
women's safety roundtable. I wasn't in that episode because I
can't speak intelligently about women's running safety. All right. Brought

(16:00):
in the people who could. Our favorite guest host, most
frequent and favorite, Karen Valez from the Just Grow Something podcast.
She came on and she hosted Having Karen. She's I
in another Karen Ian, and then we had Amy, and
then we had Jamie and the four of them all
talked about women's running safety. I thought it was a
great episode. The only way it would have been better

(16:22):
is if I could have gotten the all in the
same place at the same time. It zoom is great,
but I think it would have been more impactful with
them altogether. And I think we're gonna reapproach this idea
at some point in time because the women's safety, it
never goes away, like there's never a season. You women
always have to be vigilant. You always have to be
as safet as you possibly can. And men, if you

(16:43):
ever see someone harassing one of your fellow female runners,
if you do not go in swinging, then I am
gonna kick y'all ass myself. We look out for our
women runners. Got it, Got it. But that was a
great round table. We had a lot of fun with that.
Definitely want to do another future. Yeah, we talked about Karen.
We also tried tried to go out into the world

(17:05):
for the second Wind episodes. Is that we're doing. I
feel so bad, like I want a big shout out
to Mark, my guy Mark that I play indoor soccer
with who owns Rendezvous Climbing Gym. I tried to go there.
I had all these ideas in my head on how
it's going to make this just a great episode, and
I thought I thought it sucked. Not his fault, not
the place of fault, my fault. I'm just I'm not

(17:27):
good with the whole walking camera talking interviewing thing. I
think I'm better leaning against this wall personally. But you
know what, we gave it a shot. We were able
to show off his gym. I hope you gone make
sure you go to Rendezvous Climbing Gym. It is in Kansaiti, Missouri.
It is right off State Line though. You make the
right turn off of State Line and there you are,

(17:48):
So make sure you check that out. Do I do
really like that, like Mark and like that place, and
still don't feel like I did his episode justice. And
then we also had Josh and Katie on from Johnson
County Parks and Wreck talk about the triathlon, the Kid's Triathlon,
Sehanny Mission Triathlon, kill Creak and all the things coming up.
So I want to thank them big thanks to them.

(18:09):
Hopefully they liked their episode. Sure try And then I
think I think that's it. Nope, sorry, there were two
that why didn't they go on my list? And if
they did, I missed it. We did, if you remember,
under previous regime have ambassadors, people that we thought kind

(18:29):
of liked the show, that would like maybe want to
go out and tell other people about the show. And
we had Ambassador Sarah and she came on the podcast.
She's kind of stepped away from the running world for
a bit at least I don't see her many of
the races anymore, but I hope wherever she's at she's
doing wonderfully. And then I think we have the person
who has single handedly brought the most people to this

(18:51):
podcast because she tells everyone about it and she gets
them to take a gander or you know, at least
check it out. And as a pacer, you know, if
you're pacing with her, she's going to tell you about it.
And she is one of the best pacers around. So
I know they're not ambassadors anymore, but I'm always gonna
call her ambassador. Amy. Thank you so much. You are
definitely a number one recruiter that this podcast has, you know,

(19:15):
behind me who it's just a selfless promotion whrror, So
that's just me. You actually bring him in, and so
I think Amy has more to do with people listening
and checking out this podcast than anyone else. And I'm
gonna I'm gonna stand by that statement. So that's it.
Those are the people that I wanted to think. If
I missed anyone, I apologize, please let me know. I
am more than happy to amend and correct. And then

(19:38):
next week will be kind of our last setup episode
before we get to two hundred on August twenty second,
which I don't know what we're gonna do with it again.
I'm hoping y'all will help me out. If you want
to submit a video that comes on the two hundredth
episode again, tell us your favorite episode, tell us race
that you and I ran together that was super fun,
or tell me I'm a complete jack wag and whatever. Like,

(20:00):
I'm good with all of it. We'll spicemll together and
make an episode out of it. Sounds like fun to me.
So you do have a chance to make an appearance
on the back of the back podcast on our two
hundredth episode. So how cool is that? Like, come on,
that's super cool. So all right, we'll be back on
Monday with a brand new episode. We are going to
run race this weekend. What do we have here? We
have run to bless five k this weekend. We're gonna

(20:20):
take care of that. We're gonna handle this heat wave
that we're in the middle of. And then I'm hoping
we're gonna get it arranged. We're gonna have a last
minute quick conversation with Christina from REXI run and remember
it's in one week August sixteenth. Get yourself out there
and get registered. I want to see you in Lawrence, Kansas.
Don't let me down, got it? Got it? All right? Everyone?

(20:41):
This has been the Back of the Back podcast. I'm
gonna Skyle Walker my pleasure as alas. Everyone, have a
safe week of training. We'll see you next week. Could
not be r
